The 1996 film Swingers brought the West Coast swing revival to the rest of the country. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy were the house band for the Brown Derby club in the film, and they were quickly signed to a major label as a result. Like other retro bands -- Cherry Poppin' Daddies, for instance -- their sound seems to owe as much to old cartoons, rock 'n 'roll, and Oingo Boingo as to '40s (or even '50s) swing music.

Since they starting performing in the Pacific Northwest during Nirvana's early '90s heyday, the Cherry Poppin' Daddies can't be accused of jumping on the Retro-Swing bandwagon. Like most of their peers, the Daddies mix Jump Blues, Rockabilly, and a dash of Ska with a big beat sound that complements the modern dance floor. Like the Stray Cats in the '80s, CPD create a new sound based on vintage ideas. Their compilation album Zoot Suit Riot stormed up the charts in 1998.

Paris Combo manage to hit the bull's-eye with both classic French Pop and American Swing. Fronted by Belle du Berry, whose sexy vocals replace continental cool with sophisticated heat, the band's tight musicianship is much brighter then what usually passes muster on American Swing Revival recordings. If you want to experience La Dolce Vita in Paris instead of Rome, they'll deliver the sweet life directly to you.

Ditch the zoot suit for a straw hat and suspenders. These duds match the classic Big Easy sounds of this North Carolina "hot jazz" outfit. Has there ever been a less likely MTV breakout band than the Squirrel Nut Zippers and their hit "Hell?" Unlike other popular retro acts, however, SNZ don't incorporate rock hooks into their sound to entice the youngsters. "Suits are Picking Up the Bill" is missing vocalist Katherine Whalen's Billie Holiday-like stylings, but the rest of SNZ's smoking New Orleans sound is on full rollicking display. While they aren't the greatest soloists in the world, Ol' Satchmo surely smiles from above.

Swing Revival given a campy B-movie upgrade. This ten-piece outfit (horns aplenty) hammers out hard Swing while Lee Press-on lets loose with the zaniness of an only slightly more refined Screamin' Jay Hawkins. Crowds will cut the rug to ribbons when they hear these songs. Perhaps the most amazing thing about these recordings is their production: the acoustics are arranged to sound like a genuine Classic Swing recording. You'll think you're listening to a 78.

Squirrel Nut Zipper James Mathus put together the Knockdown Society as a benefit for Rosetta Patton Brown, daughter of delta Bluesman Charlie Patton, and a longtime friend of Mathus' family. (Rosetta is an octogenarian in failing health, so all proceeds from the album go directly to her and her family.) The group takes a jug-band approach to American roots music, and the result is a stunning, exuberant collection of tunes. Mathus' originals stand proudly next to interpretations from greats such as Lead Belly and Patton himself. The feel is relaxed, rather than reverent, and that suits the lazy nature of the tunes.

The irrepressible Jools Holland is well-known to Americans for his stint as Squeeze's keyboardist, as well as for his charismatic co-hosting of the TV series Night Music with David Sanborn in the late 1980s. He's the musically talented answer to David Letterman in Great Britain, where Later With Jools Holland places him in a wonderfully intimate "chat and play" format with such guests as Paul Weller and the Beautiful South. His own solo albums are a frothy, pub-friendly mix of classic R&B, Jump Blues and Ska -- think of a Swing Revival version of Madness or Ian Dury.

The Jet Set Six throw a solid rock beat behind spunky Retro/Swing originals like "The Perpetual Bachelor" and "The Dame that Knotted My Rope." They sound more like the ideal of the Rat Pack than anyone involved in the actual pack.

Although their strength is definitely in their excellent horn charts, this ten-piece band from Boston has versatility on their side as well. From Big Band/Swing to traditional Ska and Rock Steady, Skavoovie and the Epitones show heaping potential.

The Lucky Strikes sidestep the 1940s and instead revive streamlined '50s Swing. Led by crooning guitarist Craig Marshall, this Austin, Tex., band features a fine set of musicians and solid charts. Marshall's songs are well-written and his vocals are assured, even if they lack the distinction of a Bobby Darin or Vic Damone.

One of the founders of the San Francisco Swing Revival scene, the New Morty Show throw some serious jazz muscle into their cartoonish Vegas tomfoolery. They live in the meaty part of the Swing curve, where Lavay Smith won't force Cherry Poppin' Daddies to say that they are a straight rock act.
