Just out of knee-pants, Hancock hit the jazz world after performing Mozart with the Chicago Symphony at age eleven. Hancock's piano became a fixture of the New York club and studio scene after he graduated with degrees in music and electrical engineering. His first solo albums at age twenty-one embraced Soul, gospel-infused Hard Bop, and cerebral Post Bop (Hancock is the kind of artist who can pen the groovy club hit "Watermelon Man" and turn around and record the sweeping album Maiden Voyage without seeming to break a sweat). He joined Eric Dolphy and Miles Davis, released groundbreaking soundtrack work like Blow Up, established the Electro-Funk template with Head Hunters, and won an Academy Award for his work on Round Midnight. Today, Hancock continues to look to the future while celebrating music from several centuries and cultures.

The ultimate crossover artists, Medeski, Martin and Wood bridge the gap between the New York downtown jazz scene, which features the avant-garde guru John Zorn, and the New England jam-band touring circuit, led by the popular improv-rock group Phish. And it's not hard to figure out why. Their brand of organ-trio Jazz-Funk has something in it for just about everybody. They manage to create a wide range of sounds with minimal instrumentation: chunky, Meters-esque riff-based funk; angular, Thelonious Monk-influenced jazz; sizzling Jimmy Smith-inspired organ jams; spaced-out Free Jazz musings; a dash of Acid Jazz ambience. Bassist Chris Wood and drummer Billy Martin consistently strike loose-limbed, flexible grooves, while organist John Medeski comes up with catchy riff after catchy riff, holding the particularly juicy chords for effect. Though they sometimes display their impressive chops, they're primarily groove-based improvisers, focusing on crafting a swirling, group-oriented sound.

Bay Area funksters who, after several well-received performances at San Francisco's Fillmore in the late 1960s, tore through the '70s with their intricate first-rate Funk. Their complex arrangements drew traces of Jazz, but the music was all Funk. Bottomed out by a baritone sax, horn soaked hits like "What is Hip" and "You're Still a Young Man" had many a rump shaking. So tight and talented was this collection of longhairs called a horn section, that they basically sustained their career by loaning it out to other artists from Public Image Ltd. to Sammy (the Red Rocker) Hagar. Now content to run the Country Fair and Resort circuit and hobnob with Paul Schaffer.

George Duke is a jazz pianist who played with everyone from Cannonball Adderley to Frank Zappa before finding success as a smooth jazz keyboardist and session producer. In an interesting twist, many of the numbers Duke cuts with vocalists have stronger jazz charts and keyboard solos than his instrumental cuts. While Duke's pop recordings often find him on electric keyboards, he's featured extensively on the acoustic piano on Muir Woods Suite. This lovely classical-meets-acoustic-jazz suite is a nice change of pace -- even for a man who constantly changes pace.

Ndegoecello's Plantation Lullabies came out like a breath of musical fresh air in the early 1990s, combining the crisp danceable production of modern hip-hop with funky, old-time Soul. Ndegeocello is a major talent in many areas, from her nimble finger-funk on the bass to her breathy, robust vocals and her continually developing, passionate songwriting. Though she's worked in a mellow acoustic format recently, Ndegeocello has excelled as a bandleader, drawing on the talent of jazz musicians such as pianist Geri Allen and saxophonist Joshua Redman for guest spots. She's founded her music around solid session work of ex-Herbie Hancock cohorts Bill Summers (percussion) and Wah-wah Watson (guitar). In fact, the song "Nocturnal Sunshine" -- a collaboration with Hancock on the Stolen Moments: Red Hot & Cool album -- is one of her best, wrapping her predilection for sensuality and social consciousness into one song. Ndegeocello frequently ends up with guest spots on albums by artists including the Rolling Stones, John Mellencamp, and Rahzel of the Roots, but her excellent work as a musician never detracts from the direct, polished quality of her solo albums, which continue to evolve and improve.

By the 1960s most jazz performers were elevated -- or demoted, depending on your point of view -- into the rarified air of highbrow culture. Only a few artists managed to get onto the pop charts the way Ramsey Lewis did during the height of Beatlemania. His earthy and funky piano sounded great in a posh nightclub or in a hot discotheque: the hepcats dug how Lewis vamped off of his beefy grooves on the hit version of "The In Crowd," while the kids just knew a hot dance tune when they heard one. While his late '50s and '60s albums are a tasty combination of Vince Guaraldi and Ray Charles, much of Lewis' later recording were closer to Earth, Wind and Fire (his hit album Sun Goddess was recorded with the band and it still sounds great). He went through a bland, faceless fusion period but things are looking up once again and Appassionata (1999) finds him performing mellow but beautiful mainstream jazz. Lewis' funky piano style has been embraced by a young generation of Acid Jazz fans. Many of these youngsters try to ape his groove, but few (if any) can reach his level of funkified artistry. He's recorded a lot of crap, but the choice stuff stands out -- and will kickstart any party outside of the Utah state lines as quickly as the cast of Baywatch suggesting a game of Twister.

This superb vibraphonist crafted a winning mix of soul, world music and jazz that rode high on the jazz and R&B charts throughout the 1970s and '80s. Roy Ayers started out as a solid hard bop musician, but he quickly upped the soul and disco elements of his sound, and his sophisticated music became an uptown pop staple of disco-era black America. Even while Ayers was gaining attention for such R&B hits as "Running Away," "Hot" and "In the Dark," his overall reputation kept growing, particularly in the U.K., and he's now considered a pioneer of Britain's acid jazz movement. His work is also widely sampled by American hip-hop producers, and his juicy crossover albums are now as widely available as his soul jazz efforts should be. Ayers has earned his place in pop history as one of the few modern jazz musicians who blueprinted a pop sound with his band, not with his instrument.

Live instruments may not have seemed like the cutting edge of Acid Jazz at the time, but the Brand New Heavies' combination of 1970s-style Funk grooves and catchy urban melodies had a huge influence on the London scene of the late 1980s and beyond. Soulful singing from N'Dea Davenport led the band's organic sound for their first few albums, earning the band major success on both sides of the Atlantic. On their second album Heavy Rhyme Experience, the band took a different approach by backing a selection of hip-hop's finest emcees (including Pharcyde, Guru and Main Source), foreshadowing the sparkling live rap of bands such as the Roots who would arrive later in the decade. More recently, the band has tightened their sound considerably with crisper dance tracks and poppier melodies led by singer Seidah Garrett.

Throughout his days as a guitarist with Jazz-Funk pioneer Billy Cobham, his 1980s Fusion classics with Miles Davis, and his later solo career, John Scofield has developed an extremely individual sound, bolstered by many top-notch sidemen. He's simplified his style over the years, opting for a bluesy, funkier vibe compared to his earlier, more complex songwriting. While many guitarists express themselves with endless streams of eighth notes, Scofield makes his mark by expertly finding the notes that carry over from chord to chord -- though to be fair, Scofield can blaze a fast Bebop run with unbelievable ease. His distinct, behind-the-beat rhythmic phrasing, trademark chorus, and semi-hollowbody sound have influenced thousands of guitarists.

Though never quite a member of jazz's vanguard, trumpeter Donald Byrd has always changed with the times. In the 1950s, his star rose when he gained a prestigious spot in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, after which he began recording his own albums. But Byrd was not to remain true to the conventions of Hard Bop. Throughout the ‘60s, soul, Gospel, and contemporary pop began to influence his music: his album A New Perspective made use of a Gospel choir; he would later enlist a pair of Afro-Brazilian percussionists for his 1970 album, Kofi. By 1974, he was right in the center of the Fusion pack, releasing the highly influential Jazz-Funk album Blackbyrd. This slick, studio-produced album sold over a million copies, and was influential in forming the genre known today as Acid Jazz. Finally, when jazz and hip-hop began to intermingle, Byrd was there as well, contributing solo work to Guru's initial Jazzmatazz project.

Of all the young Acid Jazz groups out there, Galactic may be the only one you could unashamedly mention in the same sentence as the Meters, Maceo Parker and Jimmy McGriff. This New Orleans band owes everything to 1970s Jazz-Funk -- a fact they embrace rather than run from. Masters of laying down solid grooves and working them over, these instrumentals and vocal tracks will get your whole body moving faster than a swarm of radioactive bees. Galactic are good enough to be put alongside Jimmy Smith and Joey DeFrancesco on the homage to the Hammond B-3 called Organ-ized.

If you could take John Scofield and stuff him in the back of a Hammond B3 console you might get something like the sounds Charlie Hunter coaxes from his guitar. (Actually, you'd probably end up with a broken organ and an injured musician, but you get the point.) Hunter is so good he can make other guitar players cry with envy, throw down their axes and switch to some lesser instrument, such as the bass. But he's got that covered, too! Originally transcribing the fancy-footwork basslines of organists like Jack McDuff, Hunter applied them to his custom 8-string guitar, and after what must have been years of practice came up with a way to play bass, rhythm and lead guitar lines all at once. His basslines may not be the most complex, but they're an entirely tasteful backing for his Leslie-effected, organ-like rhythm guitar and his stellar chromatic solos. The band performs groove-oriented jazz, with hints of funk, spicy Latin, and even reggae (Hunter's best work may have been his cover of Bob Marley's album, Natty Dread). A must-see live, Hunter's style keeps getting more and more diverse, while his albums get better and better.

Jazz and R&B-infused street poet Gil Scott-Heron is considered to be one of the godfathers of rap but while his impressive baritone adds weight to his often politically charged poems, he's also able to kick in with a robust, Lou Rawls-style singing voice. Heron's early albums with Brian Jackson were Jazz-Funk affairs that had a greater connection to the radical FM rock of the early 1970s than to most R&B of the day. But by the middle of that decade, Heron's voice and material were strong enough to get airtime on urban airwaves, and he scored hits with "The Bottle" and "Johannesburg." Heron has only recorded once during the '90s, but his original, multigenre mix of songs and spoken word has been embraced by the British Acid Jazz generation but serious personal demons have waylaid his career.

Groove Collective have become a signature sound of both Acid-Jazz and New York City with their funky instrumental tracks and hip hop inspired grooves. Their multi-faceted sound benefits from a wide variety of instruments, including horns, vibes and percussion. The amazing thing about this sprawling 14-piece ensemble is that each member is good enough to lead a group of their own, but somehow they find a way to lay back and chip in the perfect rhythmic part to fit the song. From Latin madness to Drum 'n' Bass, Groove Collective have found a new way to play danceable music, thick with intense jazz improvisation.

Jazz has had a few notable eccentrics, to say the least, and tenor saxophonist Eddie Harris is up there with the quirkiest. His innovations paved the way for huge developments in contemporary jazz. In the '60s, while most jazzers remained deaf to the burgeoning rock 'n' roll scene, Harris embraced it by experimenting with electric saxophones and down-home Jazz-Funk tunes (such as the unforgettable "Cold Duck Time") that pointed toward the Fusion explosion to come. During those years, Harris was also highly successful commercially, landing the hit single "Theme from Exodus" in 1961. As the '60s wore on, Harris changed his format and style so many times that his fans simply could not keep up, rapidly switching between Post Bop, Funk, and Big Band. Later in his career, he began fronting more conventional jazz quartets, but his playing retained its trademark mixture of avant-garde innovations with roots firmly planted in Bop and Blues.

Combining the romantic stylings of Barry White and the psychedelic tendancies of Jimi Hendrix, Lonnie Liston Smith's lush keyboard playing is ideal for an evening of hash-fuelled sexual discovery. He started his career in the 1960s, playing jazz piano alongside such luminaries as Pharoah Sanders and Rashaan Roland Kirk before going solo in the early 1970s. Supported by his exceptional backing band the Cosmic Echos, his distinct style consists of trippy, multi-dimensional fusion overflowing with exotic percussion, breezy flutes, and blissful melodies. The group played songs mostly about love, peace, and space traveling, though they also had many lengthy instrumental jams. Lonnie and company recorded a dozen LPs during the seventies, some of them on boutique labels such as Doctor Jazz and Flying Dutchman. He continued to record as a solo artist throughout the '80s and '90s, and found new fans who discovered him through rap samples. Popular amongst hip-hop producers thanks to his use of extended instrumental grooves, he was also featured on Guru's 1993 fusion project Jazzmatazz Vol. 1. Hugely influential, Lonnie Liston Smith is a master musician with devoted fans around the world. His most recent album Transformation was released in 1998.

The Acid Jazz scene is trying to reproduce what Maceo has been doing for decades now.

Feeling burned out by the Jazz scene in the early '1970s, Donald Byrd took to teaching music. It was through his classroom that he recruited The Blackbyrds. Named after Byrd's fusion record, The Blackbyrds were an uptempo Soul, Jazz and Pop band who achieved moderate success but were extremely influential to the more recent Acid Jazz revivalists. Versatile players, they made their mark with the track “Walking in Rhythm” and continued to record although they began to play it safe, relying on their own pre-established forms for success.

Karl Denson has proven his skills as a jazz-based saxophone player, on critically acclaimed Hard Bop sessions, as a crucial member of the Greyboy Allstars, and as an in-demand session player (with fantastic guest solos on Lenny Kravitz's first few albums). With his Tiny Universe band, he makes laying into a funky, James Brown-style groove the first order of business, while singing a bit and adding touches of Acid Jazz amidst unconventional guest appearances such as that by turntablist DJ Logic. Though he'll turn up a solo with his Bebop-based lines (he's extremely capable of playing straight-ahead music), Denson usually opts for more atmospheric effects and funky repeated notes in a similar vein to Maceo Parker. His style can get any crowd into the groove, and the crowds are consistently growing for Denson's often sold-out shows.

Each song here holds its share of surprises. Dancehall rhymes clash with sultry female vocals, Turkish melodies and rapid Drum 'n' Bass meet in a dreamlike union, the ghost of James Brown past rises, or maybe just the gentle lapping of a vintage keyboard over a funky percussive beat -- often all in the same song. This band's membership is wide and varied, as many members have split to form new groups (such as Yuka Honda, who departed for Cibo Matto). The core of the group, however, can encompass as many as twenty-three members spewing out funky horn breaks or crisp guitar, or laying back to hold down a tight New York groove. From their first success -- a version of Pharoah Sanders' "The Creator Has a Master Plan" -- it has been apparent that the Brooklyn Funk Essentials are a creative force filled with original ideas and excellent musicians.

Seminal Fusion drummer Billy Cobham has built his career battering through jagged, off-kilter Jazz Rock beats interspersed with mind-blowing fills. His work on classic albums -- such as Miles Davis' Bitches Brew, Mahavishnu Orchestra's Birds of Fire, and his own Spectrum -- helped define the new style of drumming that was to dominate Fusion from the 1970s onward. On his solo albums, he brought together astounding, fresh talent (the Brecker brothers and a young John Scofield, for example) to work their way through complex odd-time signatures and furious improvisations laced with dizzying keyboards and crisply executed ensemble work. Cobham has recently returned from playing pared-down Jazz-Funk with his own groups and on projects such as Jazz is Dead. In addition to the numerous drummers slaving to figure out his mind-numbingly fast fills, Cobham's playing has had a strong influence on modern artists who have sampled his beats, including trip-hoppers Massive Attack and countless hip-hop artists.

Pianist Les McCann was one of the West Coast's few Soul Jazz stars during the funkified 1960s. His catchy, rhythmic style captures a solid groove and his work is always joyous and soulful yet McCann also excells at slow, impressionist ballads that build in intensity. A bluesy singer himself, he also excels at backing up other vocalists and musicians. He has recently bounced back with an even more economical style after a serious stroke. Good timing too, since McCann has become one of the darlings of the Acid Jazz movement and one of the most sampled jazz artists around.

Philly producer/DJ King Britt is a hard one to pin down. One minute he's touring with coffee-shop rap pioneers Digable Planets, the next he's spinning beside Josh Wink at some of the biggest house clubs in the world. Along with Wink, he's responsible for seminal house track "Tribal Confusion," released under the E-Culture moniker, and also founded the important Ovum Recordings label. But it quickly became apparent in 1998 that Britt wasn't willing to stay in his lane. His solo debut, 1998's When the Funk Hit the Fan, was a tribute to Philly funk legends. The producer pivoted again with the 2003 album Adventures in Lo-Fi, which was a full-on indie hip-hop album. But despite what genre he dabbled in, all of his work is marked by a smooth, jazz-informed undercurrent that summons a credible vision of modern urban cool.

When you're the backing band for the Godfather of Soul, you might expect to be overshadowed by the oh-so-funky one. But the JB's play it so tight, they're an entity unto themselves, as releases such as Bring the Funk On Down and Doing It To Death will attest. Because the line-up has something of a revolving door, the J.B.'s have included some of the most revered names in the world of funk and jazz, including Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley, Bootsy Collins and "Pee Wee" Ellis. Even beginners will recognize the JB's riffs that have been sampled endlessly by hip-hop artists. True classics.

Richard "Groove" Holmes, along with such soul-infused boppers as Jimmy Smith and Jimmy McGriff, helped maintain a jazz presence in dance halls and jukeboxes during the '60s and '70s. Whether working in a Big Band or small group setting, Holmes knew that jazz could still be good-time music and not just intellectual fodder for theorists. Holmes' accessible, swinging sound contained more than a touch of his homegrown Philly Soul, spinning out delicate ballads and even scoring a 1965 hit with his version of "Misty." Unfortunately, he died in 1991 just as the British Acid Jazz-sters were embracing him with open arms and shaking hips.

In recent years, Reuben Wilson has finally received the respect he deserves, mostly from rare groove record bin scavengers and acid jazzers looking for the greasy roots of funky dance music. While his early works delved into exploratory jazz and fiery Hard Bop -- with legends Grant Green and Lee Morgan offering their assistance -- Wilson's 1970s albums for Blue Note were often considered too overtly commercial. Enter modern hip-hop artists such as Tribe Called Quest, Nas and Guru, who procured finely hued loops from these "sell-out" albums and enlightened many to the inherent catchiness, grooviness and undeniable soul of this master's playing. After a brief retirement, Wilson returned to the stage to let the Hammond B-3's keys flow over smoking beats.

Sounds like DJs have had serious influence on this groove-oriented band -- the drums may be played live, but they're so crisp and tight they often sound like a machine. Add tasty guitar, thick bass funk, horns, vocals and a bit of exotic ambiance and you have original sounding hip-hop influenced jazz.

This all-star Funk-Jazz quartet includes Alan Hertz, Eric Levy and Kai Eckhardt and guitar virtuoso Fareed Haque. All the members have a background in improvisational groove-oriented styles and have worked with artists including John McLaughlin and Bobby McFerrin. Chilean/Pakistani guitarist Haque's wide knowledge of rock, classical and jazz theory has led him to collaborate with many influential players such as Ron Carter, Sting, Casandra Williams and Dizzy Gillespie. For Haque, Garaj Mahal is a chance to break out from his classical days and into the more casual and funky-psychedelic world of jamming. Like other many dance-friendly instrumental bands, the group is often found among other jazz-based jam bands such as Karl Denson's Tiny Universe and the Slip.

Some would call him a drummer's drummer, but Dave Weckl is probably more appropriately a drummer's drummer's drummer -- capable of mind-blowing beats and fills that have to be captured on video to be believed. Weckl often does exactly that, and peddles theses videos to the type of people who hang around music stores spending their parent's money rather than going home and practicing, as Weckl obviously did for many years. He's played with all kinds of people, including pop stars such as Madonna, but most notably he spent years as a seminal member of Chick Corea's Elektric Band, dusting Berklee grads around the country with his upper-tier Fusion licks. Weckl often performs with guitarist Mike Stern, delivering performances that have been likened to a rainstorm of drumsticks falling on a land made of drums. His solo releases find him searching around the Jazz-Funk and Fusion territories of the '70s, surrounding himself with a bevy of chop-shop musicians who duke it out over slick (but not overly slick), funky grooves.

Though his early albums are the kind of Smooth Jazz that allow for extreme chill-out, Lincoln Adler has only gotten better over the years. His music has grown to include the live instrumentation and soulful melodies lacking in most radio-ready contemporary jazz -- and it doesn't hurt that he can rip out a tasty solo.
