Arguably, no single artist has changed the face of modern music so profoundly, and so many times, as Miles Davis. As Charlie "Yardbird" Parker was busy revolutionizing the jazz world with his stripped-down, freewheeling style called Bop, he invited the young Davis to join him in the mid-1940s. Miles played with Bird for three years before going on to wage his own Cool Jazz revolution, fronting a nine-piece ensemble and creating lush, orchestral arrangements for Birth of the Cool. Due to drug addiction, a fallow period ensued in the early '50s, but Davis returned to the fore with renewed vigor and a new quintet in 1954. The Miles Davis Quintet, including John Coltrane on tenor sax, set new standards for what jazz could represent, achieving a popularity previously thought unattainable in the eclectic realm of jazz. Further milestones lay ahead for Davis -- his groundbreaking orchestral work with his musical soul mate Gil Evans, the recording of the most popular jazz album ever (Kind of Blue), further endeavors with another pivotal quintet in the '60s and finally, the fathering of the Free Improvisation and Funk-tinged riffs and grooves of the Fusion age with Bitches Brew. Through it all, Davis was the consummate professional and master innovator, never pausing to look back while constantly building upon his notoriously irrepressible momentum.

Alto saxophone giant Charlie Parker can rightfully be considered the father of modern jazz. Originally from Kansas City, Charlie Parker moved to New York permanently in 1940, playing with Jay McShann's big band, then with Earl Hines and Billy Eckstine. During this period, however, something else was brewing. Parker began playing in the small clubs on 52nd Street, where a handful of musicians led by trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie were breaking new ground. Rather than dealing primarily with compositions and arrangements, the beboppers focused on improvisation. Playing in small groups at blistering tempos, Parker and his cohorts began relentlessly innovating jazz harmony and rhythm. But Parker's playing doesn't sound experimental; instead, it sounds graceful, exuberant, warm, and melodic. Though many traditionalists denounced it, Parker's music captivated the jazz world. After Bebop, jazz came to be played primarily in small groups, and the Bebop innovations have become the fundamental techniques of modern jazz improvisation.

Everything about Dizzy Gillespie was original -- his bullfrog cheeks, his bent trumpet, his music, his soul. Along with Charlie "Yardbird" Parker, John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie spearheaded the revolutionary Bop movement of the '40s. Both played with intense sophistication, but while Bird sax soundalikes started coming out of the woodwork, Dizzy trumpet clones were few and far between. Both giants became a Bop University of sorts, teaching others and spreading the word of the new jazz. Gillespie's unique combination of musical ideas, range, curiosity and, best of all, his joy of life could not be duplicated. Indeed, much like his forebear Louis Armstrong, Diz was a showman and an entertainer who captivated a wide audience. Gillespie's big bands and small groups brought Bop, Bossa Nova, and Afro-Cuban rhythms to the world. Gillespie's influence looms long and large over the course of Jazz history.

When George Shearing came to New York from London in the late '40s, he had a problem: how to stand out from hordes of great jazz pianists. His answer was to create the GS Quintet. Shearing's distinctive mix of vibes, guitar, and piano became hugely popular and much imitated (even today, listen to the Frasier TV show theme). His lyrical piano combined bop, Latin and classical touches with swing. Likewise, Shearing brought jazz chops to his highly successful series of "mood music" albums on Capitol. His shimmering keyboard work conjures up images of New York penthouses and the club he celebrated in his standard "Lullaby of Birdland."

A widely reproduced photograph of Dexter Gordon sums up jazz in a single image -- the great saxophonist is lost in the music, with his instrument at rest and a stream of smoke rising from his cigarette. Gordon's own music always created the same state of reverie, mixing Lester Young's cool lyricism with Charlie Parker's bop innovations; forming his own unique sound in the process. Like Paul Desmond, Gordon quoted different songs -- as well as bits of other artists' solos -- at strategic spots during both his frenzied swingers and devastating ballads. He spent most of the '50s in jail on narcotics charges before releasing a series of stunning albums on Blue Note in the '60s. Gordon caught the acting bug in prison and later received an Academy Award nomination for his leading role in Round Midnight. Consumed with illness at the time, his playing was in serious decline but still held flashes of its former brilliance.

Clifford Brown was the Golden Boy of jazz, bursting onto the national scene with such fanfare that despite his tragically brief career, he soon became the one of the most influential trumpeters and bandleaders in all of Bop. Brown began touring internationally in 1953. The following year, he started a band with pioneering Bop drummer Max Roach. In the mere two years of his band's existence, they released eight recordings and became Jazz gurus of sorts, penning several standards and developing a sprightly, rhythmically dense style that retained a warmth and sincerity that became the template for countless imitators. Brown's trumpet style was particularly influential -- his crisp, melodic phrasing and bright, burnished-gold tone attracted the admiration of musicians and jazz theorists worldwide. His tragic death in a car accident in 1956 dealt an enormous blow to the Jazz world. Many have imitated him, but none have replaced him.

J.J. Johnson became a star by being the first slide trombonist to bring Bop innovations to his unwieldy instrument. He played with the Benny Carter and Count Basie bands during the 1940s, but developed a lightning-quick style while working with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. He led many of his own groups, the most successful of which was a unique partnership with Kai Winding, his fellow trombonist and annual competitor for the top spot in year-end jazz polls. Johnson still records prolifically and is such a skilled arranger -- doing charts for many albums and films on which he does not play -- that even if he never mastered the trombone, he would still be a major figure in jazz history.

Bud Powell virtually invented Bop piano. A native New Yorker, he began hanging out around the local jazz scene during his teenage years, witnessing the birth of Bop in the small clubs in Harlem and later, on 52nd Street. Powell landed a coveted spot as a regular member of Charlie Parker's band in the mid-‘40s, where his innovations formed the piano's equivalent of Parker's groundbreaking saxophone work. He introduced the same harmonic extensions, but phrased them in descending arpeggios and darting runs that changed direction at a breakneck rate, usually accompanied by sparse left-hand stabs. Such elements would become the stylistic bread and butter of many Bop pianists to follow. Powell's brilliant career was marred by numerous mental and physical health problems; he was committed to a mental hospital in 1951, fell ill with tuberculosis in 1962, and passed away four years later.

Tal Farlow was a brilliant Bop guitarist who became a jazz sensation in 1949 when he joined the same forward-looking Red Norvo Trio that brought Charles Mingus back into the music business. His own solo albums were wonderful, with Farlow equally comfortable with Bop and Cool musicians. However, much like West Coast guitarist Laurindo Almeida, he hated life on the road and retired from the limelight for a fifteen-year stretch. In 1975, he began releasing a string of winning albums on the Concord label that were just as hot as the ones he made for Verve in the '50s. If Tal Farlow ever played a mediocre solo, it seems to have never been recorded.

Sonny Stitt was one of the great Bop innovators; a tenor and alto saxophonist whose accomplishments were often overshadowed by the player to which he bore an uncanny similarity: Charlie Parker. His involvement in the Bop scene occurred simultaneously to that of Parker, playing with trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie in 1945. Drug addiction caused him to leave the scene in the late '40s, and he returned on the tenor horn in 1950. By then, he was leading his own bands and playing sharper than ever. Stitt's playing combined the robustness of Dexter Gordon with the lyricism of Lester Young, and he often dueled with other horn players, allowing him to show off his prodigious technique. In the '60s, Stitt began playing with more Funk-influenced combos, often featuring electric guitar and organ. However, he remained primarily a Bop player until his death in 1982.

James Moody was in his early twenties (but looked fresh out of knee pants) when he joined Dizzy Gillespie as a sax player in 1943. Moody consumed the bop idiom whole without ever sounding like a Charlie Parker clone. His tune, “Moody's Mood for Love,” became a Bop anthem and King Pleasure turned it into a vocal hit in 1952. Besides playing with Dizzy during the '40s and '60s, Moody led a string of groups to great acclaim. He has the ability to keep his Bop chops sharp whether in a Big Band, soul-jazz or pop setting. Adept at all the woodwinds (including a sweet flute), Moody is more popular than ever in the '90s and has hit the jazz charts celebrating the Sinatra and Mancini songbooks. He can be an intense soloist but his easygoing, gracious stage presence brings Tony Bennett, rather than Miles Davis, to mind.

Herb Ellis is certainly one of the best Bop guitarists to ever race through a set of changes, leaving many guitarists scratching their heads and contemplating the price of a good bass. His playing has a bright, hollow-body edge to it, with a touch of country and a hard-swinging sense of rhythm that's evident in his seemingly easy comping. His unaffected single-note riffs are interspersed with juicy chordal playing and blistering Bebop runs that will have you wondering how it's possible to pick so fast. He certainly doesn't overplay, but Ellis has had to keep his chops up to full speed -- he spent much of the beginning of his career with lightning-fingered pianist Oscar Peterson. Along with bassist Ray Brown, the three formed one of the best jazz trios that ever recorded, spurring each other on with playful zest. In addition, he's worked with most of the great jazz artists, including many unforgettable sessions with Stan Getz and Ella Fitzgerald.

Bop was not created from nothing; it was an extension of existing developments in Swing. And trumpet virtuoso Roy Eldridge was a key player in the transition. Eldridge began his career in Chicago in the 1920s, playing in carnival, circus and dance bands. In 1931, he moved to New York City and joined the big band circuit. Four years later, he started his own big band, which toured and recorded for the next ten years. Eldridge's dazzlingly bright tone and enormous range made him an exceptional soloist, and his phrasing possessed a dramatic flair that secured his position as a trumpet star. His pyrotechnic playing pointed the way towards Bop, inspiring a young trumpeter named Dizzy Gillespie. In the late 1940s, Eldridge began touring and recording with small groups as well, collaborating with Gillespie in 1954. He retired in 1981.

Illinois Jacquet's "take no prisoners" tenor saxophone style brings together Swing, Bop and blues. In the 1940s, he was a star soloist with Lionel Hampton's band, where his lean but tough sound helped define what came to be known as R&B. Jacquet wasn't afraid to add Bop to his bag of tricks, and he went on to a rewarding solo career, recording prolifically.

Drummer Max Roach has been a vital force in shaping jazz music, for he alone bridges the Swing, Bop, and Avant Garde eras. In 1942, at the age of eighteen, he was already playing with the Duke Ellington orchestra; soon afterward, he met trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and went on to forge some of the first Bebop rhythms. Roach pioneered the use of polyrhythms, or multiple interlocking rhythms with different meters that share the same pulse and thus may be played simultaneously. In 1954, Roach formed his own quintet with trumpet virtuoso Clifford Brown which thrived until Brown and pianist Richie Powell were killed in a car accident. Roach has since led countless bands and worked with dozens of Post Bop and avant-garde players. He's tackled political themes in his music, led an all-percussion ensemble, and worked in multimedia with dancers and video artists. His latest combo often plays alongside a string quartet.

Phil Woods was a Juilliard graduate who, along with his entire generation of saxophone players, fell in love with Charlie Parker's music. Woods caught the attention of his peers when he joined the big bands of Oliver Nelson and Quincy Jones, and since Woods has always had the ability to fit his Bop-fueled sax into any musical occasion, each of these ace arrangers gave him ample room in which to solo. Woods even managed to survive the dark years of jazz (read: the ‘70s) by moving to London, where seemingly every visiting musician or vocalist wanted his saxophone for club or recording dates. Today there is no stopping Woods, as he tours incessantly and records regularly on his own.

Best known for his work with the legendary pianist Thelonious Monk, tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse is one of the most versatile players in all of jazz. He cut his teeth playing Bop, but in 1949, Duke Ellington hired him, and Rouse became a rarity in jazz: a saxophonist who could play Swing and Bop with equal skill. Rouse enjoyed a solo career from 1957 until 1959, when he joined Monk’s group. During his stint with Monk, he occasionally made his own records, but his focus was Monk’s band. More laconic than verbose, Rouse made every note count through clever and unexpected phrasing. And like Monk, he preferred improvising on the melody of a song rather than its chord changes. Rouse went solo in 1970, and when Monk stopped playing in 1976, Rouse formed a tribute band, Sphere, that played Monk’s music. Sphere has also played standards, originals, and Charlie Parker tunes.

The forgotten man of the Bebop movement, pianist Duke Jordan appeared on some of Charlie Parker’s most celebrated recordings in the late ‘40s before slowly (and mysteriously) falling into obscurity. Nevertheless, he has built up an impressive collection of solo recordings over his lengthy career. His unorthodox rhythmic figures, as well as his sprightly, almost staccato attack, separate him from the hordes of Bud Powell imitators. In 1955, he released a pair of records that remain among his best work, featuring such popular standards as “A Night in Tunisia,” “Summertime,” and “Yesterdays.” Jordan resurfaced in 1973, from which point he recorded no less than nineteen albums for the Danish record label Steeplechase (many of them live recordings) up through 1985. Despite his erratic career, Jordan remains a pioneer of Bop.

Few may know him by name, but everyone has heard him. Plas Johnson's cunning saxophone took the lead on Henry Mancini's "Pink Panther Theme" and is featured on such rock classics as the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds. It's easy to hear why he was such a studio maven; Johnson can say a lot efficiently, and his understanding of Bop never interferes with his deep and emotional sense of swing. Only a handful of his solo dates remain in print, but they are worth seeking out. An amazingly consistent player, Evening Delight (1999) finds Johnson playing at the same high level he's been at for decades now.

If they handed out MVP awards for jazz musicians, Frank Wess would have a trophy-lined fireplace. A great Cool-toned sax player, Wess actually earned a name for himself playing flute for the "atomic" period of the 1950s Basie band. Between band duties and a busy session schedule, he also found the time to record dozens of swingin' solo records over the latter half of the twentieth century. Unlike Bud Shank, an equally fine woodwind master, Wess doesn't seem to have a chip on his shoulder about giving equal time to the flute and tenor sax. Lend a listen to his current work on the ever classy Concord label -- Wess' sound is as delightful as ever.

Armed with a lineup of five saxophones plus rhythm section and a repertoire consisting largely of harmonized versions of Charlie Parker tunes (solos and all), this outfit could legitimately stake claim to the title of World's Greatest Super Sax Tribute Band. Nonetheless, they play with a sense of excitement that belies their third-hand repertoire band status.
