John Coltrane's recording career took off with his work with Miles Davis' Quintet in 1955 and in '56, he began recording his first solo material. He began a serious investigation of harmony, which culminated in his seminal '59 LP Giant Steps. Coltrane's warp-speed sonic attack on this album was called by the critics but his playing kept evolving. In '61, he solidified the lineup of a new quartet with pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison, and drummer Elvin Jones. Their playing was largely modal, based on the approach Coltrane had learned with Miles Davis. In the years that followed, the group began pushing towards total freedom. At the same time, Coltrane began to tackle more spiritual themes, which one can hear on the two suites A Love Supreme and Meditations. By his untimely death in 1967, Coltrane had moved entirely into free-form improvisation; yet even in his most chaotic playing one senses a higher purpose. John Coltrane was both a deeply spiritual person and a relentless stylistic innovator, who demolished the boundaries of jazz in search of transcendence.

Charlie Haden, a key jazz musician of the modern age, was on the ground floor of the free jazz and avant-garde movement before gaining a wider audience as a keeper of the bop flame. He was born into a musical family and started yodeling as a toddler. After a bout with polio weakened Haden's vocal chords, he switched over to the bass.
Haden was already into jazz when he moved to Los Angeles in 1957 and started playing with such West Coast stars as Art Pepper before he became the bassist in Ornette Coleman's revolutionary free jazz band. Haden continued paving the way for avant-garde jazz, playing long stints with Keith Jarrett, Dewey Redman and drummer Paul Motian. He also trailblazed with his Liberation Music Orchestra. By the late '80s he had formed Quartet West with Kiwi pianist and arranger Alan Broadbent, Ernie Watts (sax) and Lawrence Marable (drums). The group's second Verve album, 1991's Haunted Heart, was Haden's first mainstream hit and reintroduced him as a master of ballads and romantic material. He kept recording with Quartet West while cutting solo sets. In 2008, he recorded Friends & Family: Rambling Boy, a pitch-perfect look back at the folk music of his youth.

Ornette Coleman was a jazz renegade, a misfit who defiantly created his own approach to improvisation that demolished the rules of Bebop harmony. For Coleman, music was like talking; and a band was like a conversation. Each member of his piano-less quartet made spontaneous musical statements, directly responding to the other musicians. This complete freedom struck the jazz establishment as pure chaos, but Coleman's music was beautiful. His horn gave out poignant, lyrical shouts as well as lines that sounded like bebop refracted through a kaleidoscope. His compositions expressed delight, anguish and puckish humor, often within the same tune. In addition to brilliant quartet recordings, Coleman was known for experimenting. The revolutionary 1960 recording Free Jazz consisted of two quartets (each with two horns, bass and drums) improvising together all at once! In 1975, Coleman applied his musical revolution, called harmolodics,to a rock band, founding the group Prime Time.

That Shepp was one of the most controversial jazzmen of the 1960s had as much to do with his outspoken Afro-American politics as it did his music -- at least to the extent that the two can be separated. As a poet and playwright (as well as a tenor saxophonist and composer), he clearly articulated feelings of frustration and anger; but he could also be lyrical and, even by his own admission, sentimental. Despite his alignment with the "New Thing" (another term for the radical Free Jazz movement, as referenced on a split 1965 LP with mentor John Coltrane), his roots lay firmly in the jazz tradition. His gruff, woozy tone in particular recalled the big tenors of the pre-Bop era, and when coupled with the brassy trombone of frequent frontline partner Roswell Rudd, the results could suggest a parallel universe circa 1937. By the mid-1970s, and especially the 1980s, he'd taken a more overtly traditional path, playing Bebop and standards with more frequency. While his later music isn't what he's best known for, there are still some fine moments to be found -- for instance, Goin' Home (1977), an album of reverent spiritual interpretations with pianist Horace Parlan.

A classically trained saxophonist, clarinetist, and flautist, Eric Dolphy expanded the boundaries of improvised music in a way no one has yet been able to match. He was exploding Bebop harmony from within -- though his music sounds atonal, he considered everything he played to fit within the chords of the piece. This approach, combined with his unusually sensitive ear and keen, angular tone, led to a wholly distinctive style unlike anything before or since. Dolphy's brilliance led many top-notch bandleaders to seek him out as a sideman; his credits include Ornette Coleman, Andrew Hill, and Oliver Nelson. He toured and recorded extensively with John Coltrane and Charles Mingus as well. In 1964, he recorded as a bandleader with the Blue Note label, releasing the Out to Lunch! album. That same year, his sudden death from diabetes shocked the jazz community. Dolphy's unique voice continues to inspire the contemporary avant-garde.

Tim Berne has been a major presence on the New York Avant Garde Jazz scene since the mid-1980s, leading several bands, running his own record labels and collaborating with folks such as John Zorn, Bill Frisell, and Joey Baron. As an alto saxophonist, he plays in a bluesy, dissonant style that descends from Ornette Coleman and, more directly, mentor Julius Hemphill. His passionate, almost painful tone is instantly recognizable, and while he's certainly a free player (i.e., he doesn't rely on existing chord changes), his solos ultimately emphasize melody above pure sound or noise. As a composer, he excels at writing angular, tongue-twisting melodic themes that manage to be both elusive and catchy. His lengthy pieces wind their way through sections of dense, cloudy chamber-improv, odd-metered funkiness, and sheer go-for-broke physicality, out-rocking plenty of rock bands in the process. In terms of covering all these bases, his quartet Bloodcount (Chris Speed, tenor sax/ clarinet; Michael Formanek, bass; Jim Black, percussion) has arguably been his best vehicle. Other Berne outfits worth checking out include the larger Bloodcount precursor Caos Totale, the free improv trio Paraphrase and the guitar/drums/saxophone trio Big Satan.

A star on the rise, J.D. Allen has a massive, powerful sound that borrows from Coltrane's legacy without sounding like an imitation. Allen received his training working with artists such as Bob Belden, Betty Carter, Frank Foster and Winard Harper, and is now recording as a leader to further develop his style. Lightning fast runs stun your ears as they sequence into new tonal areas, but the attack is softened by a graceful vibrato; it's evident that Allen has done his homework, learning what he can from the greats. His compositional skills are refined, with one foot in the '60s and one in the '90s, but check out his haunting rendition of Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman" as well.

Dressing in flowing, priestly robes and solemnly claiming to originate from the planet Saturn, pianist/composer/bandleader/all-around jazz guru Sun Ra made music of enigmatic, magisterial beauty for half a century. Beginning his career in Chicago in the 1940s, Ra soon assembled the Arkestra, a tightly-knit group of musicians that would stay together in one form or another for the next fifty years. With adventurous ease, they handled his unorthodox, exploratory compositions that combined elements of Swing, Bop, and avant-garde music. His delicate, cosmic late-'50s compositions turned to urgent atonality in the '60s, thriving upon all the disparate musical elements which his material encompassed: searing, carnival-like organ and synth solos, West African rhythms, twittering Chamber Music passages, howling Free Jazz solos, rousing Big Band anthems, lovely Swing melodies, and the otherworldly singing of June Tyson. Sometimes, band members would take the microphone to preach a cosmic, Afrocentric consciousness which inspired many political movements of the day. Though Sun Ra left this planet in 1993, his music is here to stay.

Steve Lacy is a unique voice in jazz, whose deceptively simple improvisations reveal a thorough knowledge of the music's history as well as a deliberate, meditative lyricism. Much of his work has been inspired by Thelonious Monk, whose music he interprets often and with great originality and insight. The Monk influence comes through loud and clear on his latest work, which finds him fronting his old and familiar trio of bassist Jean-Jacques Avenel and drummer Oliver Johnson. The startling yet simple melodies are inflected with Bop, the blues, and traditional jazz but seem to expand exponentially as they leap up in fourths, implying a different tonal center with each unfolding note. Likewise, his improvisations start out in well-traveled Bop phrases before departing to cover unexpected territory. Meanwhile, the trio plays with the comfort that can only come from a long, fruitful musical relationship. It's a joy to hear.

Gayle embodies the notion of Free Jazz as an extreme art form. Taking off from the highest plateaus of intensity, his tenor sax spews forth upper-register squalls and guttural honks. Titles like "Repent" and "Kingdom Come" point to the fire-and-brimstone religiousness that fuels his music.

One of the most diverse, prolific jazz musicians of the past twenty five years, David Murray is instantly recognizable for his vocal, expressive playing on the tenor saxophone and bass clarinet. Making his mark in mid-1970s New York as a high-energy Free Jazz blower, he quickly branched out, addressing the perceived gap between the '60s Avant Garde and the greater Afro-American tradition. Ming (1980), with its blend of colorful octet arrangements, down home melodies and raucously free-spirited group improvisation, is a prime example of this convergence and has remained one of the era's more widely hailed recordings. Singling out any one album would be misleading, however. Murray has led more than eighty-five LPs, working variations on his own brand of small combo, inside/outside, never-quite-mainstream jazz and also delving into Big Band, electric Funk, Organ Jazz, and Gospel territories. Some charge that he's spread himself too thin, but his work has been remarkably consistent in terms of both quality and its brash, soul-heavy personality.

Albert Mangelsdorff rates among the top trombone players in the world. He's a versatile player whose collaborations range from Free Jazz outings with fellow German Peter Brotzmann to more Bop-based affairs with the likes of saxophonist Lee Konitz and Modern Jazz Quartet pianist John Lewis. Mangelsdorff's solo recordings are remarkable for their use of multiphonics -- the creation of a buzzing, chord-like sound by playing one note and singing another into the mouthpiece -- and for logical, clear-headed improvisations. He's earned praise from established jazz greats like Joe Henderson and even won a few Downbeat polls, which is fairly rare for a European. Unfortunately his recordings are hard to come by in the U.S. Fans of adventurous jazz trombone playing should take advantage of any opportunity to hear the man at work.

Trumpeter/cornetist Don Cherry first burst on the music scene along with the rest of the revolutionary Ornette Coleman Quartet in the late '50s. His magnetic musical mind and improvisational prowess led to performance/recording alliances throughout the '60s with such equal jazz heavyweights as Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Archie Shepp and Albert Ayler (and furthermore with Ornette). A late '60s duo communion with now likewise legendary drummer Ed Blackwell gave early indication of Cherry's aim toward a timeless world music fusion which would indeed reach its apex on his first major label recording as a leader in 1975, Brown Rice. Further to sporadic releases on small labels, Cherry's trumpet sound and essence rose above the fray in latter days through his work for the ECM label via the collective groups Codona (with Nana Vasconcelos and Collin Walcott) and Old And New Dreams (with Dewey Redman, Charlie Haden, Ed Blackwell). Addicted to both the search for the ultimate sound and the intoxicating substances which would be his undoing, Cherry succumbed to the limits of this mortal coil in 1995.

A giant among the jazz avant-garde, Cecil Taylor's first forays into free improvisation predate even those of Ornette Coleman. His dizzying, explosive frenzies seem to reference every twentieth century style of piano playing imaginable, from pounding boogie-woogie to Debussy-esque impressionism. In his early, Bebop-derived explorations, he reveals a keen, unorthodox rhythmic sensibility. And for those of you who don't believe that the piano can actually function as a percussion instrument, listen to Taylor attack the keys. Taylor's primary accomplice was alto sax virtuoso Jimmy Lyons, but the pianist would sometimes play solo. And when he put together a larger group, the results were often stunning, as on the 1966 classic LP featuring drummer Andrew Cyrille, Unit Structures. Taylor could even make room for another pianist in his seemingly overabundant flurries of notes—listen to his duets with the highly underacknowledged Mary Lou Williams.

Clown prince of the avant-garde and a member of the Art Ensemble of Chicago for thirty years prior to his untimely death in late 1999, Bowie had a distinguished and varied career. His innovative techniques on the trumpet -- the use of quarter-tone "in-between" notes and various slurring, vocalizing techniques -- influenced a generation of musicians, and his boundless eclecticism helped expand notions of the word "tradition." Outside of his work with the Art Ensemble (a chapter unto itself), he led an organ jazz group and a quirky brass band that at one point played covers of Marilyn Manson and the Spice Girls. Just as importantly, he could play a slow, sad trumpet solo that touched nerves few others could reach.

Hard-hitting, no-nonsense tenor saxophone with roots in R&B and (especially) 1960s Free Jazz is what to expect from Frank Lowe. The Tennessee-born reedman debuted in 1973 for the legendary ESP label; he has since built an impressive discography -- hampered only by his prolonged absence from the scene in the late '80s and early '90s. His material covers a focused spectrum, ranging from full-throttle free playing (see Duo Exchange, a scorching duet LP with ex-John Coltrane drummer Rashied Ali, for a good example) to bluesy, more conventionally swinging free bop and Post Bop (see Decision in Paradise or Bodies & Souls). There's nothing too fancy about what he does. However, his to-the-point soloing, his wonderfully throaty tenor sax tone (augmented by an array of gruff screams and hollers), and his able writing skills make him well worth checking out for those into the earthier side of the so-called jazz avant-garde.

His tenor saxophone can sometimes lead to exalted journeys through new sonic territory, but with David S. Ware's playing it's the ride that matters. Unlike many Free Jazz players, Ware has taken the most difficult path, choosing -- like his onetime lead pianist Cecil Taylor -- to know the traditional rules of music before proceeding to break them down into pulpy little bits. His meaty tenor tone can squeal into high harmonic registers or fly through a frenzy of tumbling chromatic notes before breaking free into a soaring run that brings the hairs on your neck to attention. His excellent band consists of pianist Matthew Shipp (who plods and plonks like a charged Alice Coltrane) and either Marc Edwards, Susie Ibarra or Whit Dickey on drums, seething and boiling in a rhythmic tug-of-war with bassist William Parker.

The name Julian Priester has become synonymous with the jazz trombone. He’s one of the true innovators on the instrument, possessing a large, expressive tone and a wide palette of sounds that ranges from straight-ahead bebop to rich, evocative free improvisation. Never a member of the bebop orthodoxy, Priester played with the radically innovative Sun Ra Arkestra from 1954 to 1956. In 1958, he began playing with Max Roach, remaining in the great drummer’s camp for three years while releasing his solo debut, Keep Swingin’, in 1960. Priester’s next regular gig was with Herbie Hancock’s band at the dawn of Hancock’s Fusion period, moving on to record two Fusion albums of his own in the ‘70s. In 1996, he recorded trio work with saxophonist Sam Rivers and electronic accompaniment. Julian Priester’s boundless versatility has made him the consummate player on a much-neglected instrument.

During the past decade, pianist Matt Shipp has become one of the most talked-about figures in Free Jazz. Recording prolifically both as a leader and with the David S. Ware Quartet, he has steadily established himself as an original voice, outgrowing the frequent Cecil Taylor comparisons that were so present early in his career. It's true that his dense harmonies and rolling, where's-the-beat rhythms can resemble Taylor (at least on the surface), and the two have collaborated with some of the same musicians, most notably bassist William Parker; in essence, though, he's a different player. Hints of Bill Evans' impressionism and Andrew Hill's cerebral Post Bop sensibility creep in at points, while his percussively probing low-end fixation seems to come from somewhere else entirely. Pastoral Composure seems to point in yet a different direction: melodic and at times even conventionally swinging in a boppish manner, it also breathes more than some of his past CDs. As such, it's a good introductory point for those who might have gotten claustrophobic with something like Flow of X.

An extremely versatile pianist, John Hicks adapts to Traditional Jazz, Hard Bop or Free Jazz situations with equal confidence and dynamism. His harmonically developed improvisations expand and update the jazz tradition from the inside; he frequently adds startling melodic and rhythmic insights to an encyclopedia of references, developing well-traveled melodies and chord changes in fresh and original ways. As a sideman, he's worked with everyone from Art Blakey to Pharaoh Sanders.

Blistering Bebop runs and tenor sax squeals from this veteran leader of the Avant Garde Jazz scene. Performing with Art Blakey, McCoy Tyner and especially Charles Mingus has lent Adams' playing a sense of freedom and humor; it can be calm and bluesy or, alternately, shriek like Pharoah Sanders after an unfortunate dental appointment.
