Texas-raised/Nashville-based artist Steve Earle got his start as a young teenager on the vibrant Texas coffeehouse circuit of the 1960s, absorbing the material and emulating the bad habits of his heroes Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clarke. Earle worked on-and-off as a staff songwriter in Nashville before he finally got a decent record deal of his own and released the chart-topping, critically acclaimed Guitar Town in 1986. The record combined twanging, tuneful Country Rock material with tough, unsentimental songwriting that had more in common with Bruce Springsteen than anything Nashville had going on at the time; the fact that it also yielded a couple of Top-10 hits was the icing on the cake. Earle continued to release ambitious Country Rock material, but he failed to repeat the chart success of Guitar Town, and a lifetime of substance abuse finally caught up with him. He wound up in a jail/rehab facility with an uncertain future, a dwindling fan base, and no record deal. He later emerged clean and sober, and proceeded to put out the best, most lucid work of his career -- Train a Comin', I Feel Alright, and El Corazon -- in quick succession. He also started his own record label E-Squared, on which he releases his own records and the material of other artists he admires.

Pete Seeger was famous for playing old hobo country banjo folk songs and socially aware narratives of working-class folks. His union anthems and famous five-string banjo playing has influenced every hootenanny crooner from Greenwich Village to North Beach. Toward the end of the 1930s, he joined forces with the late, great Woody Guthrie and a handful of other musicians to form Almanac Singers. Their aim was to promote unions and come down hard on fascism. In the late 1940s, Seeger formed the Weavers, a folk group who made famous such hits as "Tzena, Tzena, Tzena," Leadbelly's "Goodnight Irene," and "On Top of Old Smokey" before McCarthy-era paranoia put an unceremonious end to their bookings and recording contracts. Today, his contributions to old standards live strong in the interests of folk enthusiasts and anyone who has ever been moved by songs such as "We Shall Overcome," "If I Had a Hammer," and "Turn! Turn! Turn!" a Seeger penned ditty that became a gigantic radio hit when the song was covered by West Coast Folk Rockers, the Byrds.

Richie Havens is a master of bringing together rich melodies, powerful lyrics, pre-punk acoustic guitar and a touch of jazziness for a liberating aural experience. Combining Bob Dylan's lyrical skills with an earthy vocal prowess, Havens reaches near-orgasmic heights in each energetic composition. His 1967 outing Mixed Bag best exhibits the duality of Havens' playing: on the one hand, you have sunshine-filled jazzy folk such as "Morning, Morning"; on the other hand you've got electrically charged pieces such as "High Flying Bird." The high point of Havens' long career remains his electrifying performance at Woodstock, where he equaled the mighty roar of Hendrix's screaming Fender Stratocaster with his deep, growling vocals and vigorous, finger shredding acoustic guitar strumming. The low point might be his Amtrak commercials a few years ago, but we forgive him -- it's not easy making a living as a folk guitarist.

Bruce Cockburn has been one of Canada's major stars for the past thirty years. A literate singer-songwriter, he has broken through to American audiences a number of times: baby boomers turned 1979's "Wondering Where the Lions Are" into a hit, "If I Had a Rocket Launcher" made heavy rotation on MTV and AOR radio, and the alterna-rock generation went for "Call it Democracy" in a big way. For the past decade, Cockburn's sound can be likened to Daniel Lanois-produced Dylan or Robbie Robertson. His records are beautifully crafted, and each one has at least a couple stand-out tracks that feature exquisite musicianship. His spoken word pieces, however, don't equal his alternately personal and topical songs. His work is greatly admired by Lucinda Williams, Ani DiFranco, and T-Bone Burnett, and all three have recorded with him. Cockburn deserves such distinguished company.

Regarding guitar playing, Woody Guthrie once said, "If you play more than two chords, you're showing off." In many ways, this quote personified the man who was responsible for timeless and classic folk standards such as "This Land is Your Land" and "The Grand Coulee Dam." The content of what came naturally to him spanned from children's sing-alongs to anti-fascist, working-class anthems, romantic love songs with wide opened landscaped backdrops, hobo-hillbilly boxcar standards, and dust bowl ballads akin to John Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath-- Guthrie grew up around and experienced similar circumstances first hand. His soulful, nasal twang crooning was imitated by almost everyone who has ever picked up an acoustic guitar or attended a coffeehouse hootenanny. Guthrie was undoubtedly the most celebrated and influential folk Singer-Songwriter of the twentieth century.

Much like his father, the late, great Woody Guthrie, Arlo Guthrie plays light-hearted folk music that swims in the conscience of social and political issues. Guthrie grew up in the footsteps of his father's world and learned to play guitar shortly after learning how to walk. In 1967 he wrote a comedic song by the name of "Alice's Restaurant" that had nothing to do with an impatient grill cook who called his employees "dingy broads." What it actually touched on were timely issues of the draft board, the Vietnam War, and police harassment. Although that album (by the same title) was his only gold record, Guthrie continues to tour and support environmental and human rights causes. The songs here are a collection of some of his best works throughout his career. Although some of his content is a little dated, the man's music is almost as timeless as his father's. Almost.

At first inspired, then disgusted, by Punk's quasi-Leftist posturing, Billy Bragg looked back to protest songsters such as Woodie Guthrie and Phil Ochs for inspiration. Picking up where Ochs left off, Bragg's recordings juxtapose intelligent social critique and tight, resonant melodies. Though in most cases he gives equal weight to these priorities, Bragg's hand is often forced by his radical political sentiments -- something which has guaranteed him a mixed reception in his native England and relative obscurity in the U.S. Even the recent collaboration with Wilco seems to have made precious little impact on his stateside reception. Undaunted, Bragg has continued sculpting poetic songs from a rare alloy of politics and lyricism. Sometimes joined by a band, but usually opting to go it alone with his guitar, Bragg's performances and recordings have helped preserve folk's capacity for social and political relevance.

Odetta Gordon was born on Dec 31, 1930 in Birmingham, Alabama. She was the first African-American political folk singer and influenced many other folkie-come-lately musicians of that era. In her post adolescence, Odetta switched from classical voice training to folk by teaching herself how to play the guitar. She also became involved in singing around the coffeehouse circuit in the early 1950s. As a folk singer and songwriter, she started to achieve notability when she began appearing live with Pete Seeger and Harry Belafonte. After twenty-six albums, four music collections, and over fifty years as a folk singer, Odetta continues to sing with a deep, dominant and lucid voice.

Card-carrying Wobbly and raconteur of the rural Southwest, Utah Phillips is revered for his unadorned but intensely lyrical balladry and his ability to engage audiences with the wisdom and down-home bonhomie of an old-timey cracker-barrel philosopher. More recently, Phillips has earned the adulation of angst-folky Ani Difranco. The result -- 1996's the past doesn't go anywhere -- is unlike anything Phillips has done before: a spoken word sculpture (with Laurie Anderson's fingerprints all over it) set against a backdrop of Funk/rap/country rhythms.

With a delivery that, at times, sounds just like Dylan, Dan Bern's modern day folkisms are the sort of cleverly worded, tongue-in-cheek, quasi-jaded masterpieces that aging, gainfully employed hippies go nuts for. Whether rambling along with his acoustic guitar or backed by a small country-prone band, Bern's acute observations on modern life and love, as well as his talent for hooks that sound just like those of the 1960s, is coffeehouse folk that's hit the big time.

Extremely well-versed in the countryside blues vocabulary, though perhaps better known as a quasi-Cabaret performer, Josh White came up in the Piedmont scene of the 1930s and '40s and apprenticed with the likes of Blind Joe Taggart and Blind Blake. With a refined voice that seemed more suited to Vocal Jazz than the more rugged blues of his native Mississippi, White made his way to the urban centers of the '40s, picking up on the fashionable trends in music as he went. While the latter half of his career is characterized by forays into Cabaret (as well as a sex-god Lounge act), White's early recordings are some of the finest in the Folk-Blues catalog.

Despite a history of paying tribute to heroes (see "Williamsburg Will Oldham Horror"), an album of Crass covers is a ballsy move for an anti-folk singer-songwriter. With a significant poetic license in one hand and an acoustic guitar in the other, Lewis nevertheless manages to make this exercise in self-indulgence work. Covers of "Systematic Death," "Punk Is Dead" and "Do They Owe Us a Living" -- sung in a monotone, almost despondent voice -- might at first only seem like novelty items, but his unwavering devotion to a cause juste makes you want to convert.

Best known for his innovative six-string skills and masterful electrical effects as guitarist for Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave, Tom Morello shifts to a folksy alter ego with the Nightwatchman, which was quite the shocker for fans of his hard-core origins. Trading an electric guitar for an acoustic, Morello decided to put his passion for political and social activism at the forefront with Woody Guthrie-style folk and leftist lyrics fueled with bitterness toward government deception and social injustice. As the Nightwatchman, he first began playing in Los Angeles coffeehouses before touring with Billy Bragg and recording the song "No One Left" for Songs and Artists That Inspired Fahrenheit 9/11. The Nightwatchman's debut, One Man Revolution, was released in April 2007, showcasing Morello's gruff baritone and acoustic playing for one of the first times. Aside from his music, Morello, along with Serj Tankian of System of a Down, cofounded Axis of Justice, a nonprofit organization aimed at fighting social injustice.

There are some folks who tend to see Woody Guthrie as Batman and Cisco Houston as Robin because the two were always traveling around America and singing harmonies together at various migrant camps. But in all fairness, Houston was more like Aquaman. His tenor-to-baritone sung folk songs became the anthems of America's working class, ranch hands and hobos eventually finding their way into the young and politically active folk revival enthusiasts who were trying to change the world in the late-1950s and early-1960s. Besides recording his own material (which consisted of traditional standards and self-penned ditties), Houston sang backup harmonies on some of the earliest Woody Guthrie recordings for the Folkways label. He passed away after being diagnosed with cancer in 1961.

Extremely influential folk group set the standard for socially conscious music. Formed by Woody Guthrie, his protégé Pete Seeger, Lee Hayes and Millard Lampbell and produced by the legendary Alan Lomax, the group played a mixture of old folk standards and union songs, driven by Seeger's banjo and Guthrie's harmonica. They were together for only a short time as Almanac Singers, but Seeger and Hayes went on to hook up with Ronnie Gilbert and Fred Hellerman to form the Weavers. The Weavers were more popular than Almanac Singers, and less overtly political, but their career still suffered in the 1950s due to anti-communist hysteria.

Radical lesbian activist and Vietnam War protester Holly Near has been a respected voice in the women's folk movement -- and the women's movement itself -- since the early 1970s. As a TV, movie, and perennial TV-movie actress, Near spent a lot of time in the public eye, but it was her staunch liberalism and uncompromising approach to music for which she has always been most recognized. In the '80s she released some less political material, but remained active on the benefit circuit. The '90s saw Near returning to her outspoken style of two decades before, and she's remained a widely recognized and loved artist within the genre.

It's difficult to believe that sonically, so much comes from so very little, but de Forest makes the most of what he uses and comes up sounding big - in both sound and ideas. Some have compared this San Francisco performer to Bob Dylan meets Tiny Tim, and who are we to argue?

Self-professed "all-American, Jewish, lesbian folksinger" Phranc got her start in the late '70s Punk rock movement with synth rock band Nervous Gender and reggae Goth band Catholic Discipline (a band that would be immortalized in the first installment of the Decline of Western Civilization movies). During this period, she would sing some of her more political songs acoustically to allow the audience to clearly hear her words. It was these performances that eventually led to the discovery of her voice as an acoustic folk artist. During the span of her early solo releases (Folksinger and on), she discovered her niche -- a voice for not only the gay and lesbian community, but for the socially conscious everywhere. Phranc's music is often humorous in approach, but the underlying message is always based on serious subject matter.

Fred Small walked away from a promising law career to pursue a vocation as a folk singer. He remains committed to issues of social justice, decrying in his songs the pervasive problems of racism and homophobia. Small's words can resensitize us to the plights of the elderly, the handicapped and the poor, thereby helping restore these groups to the larger community.

Prickly, satirical folk from a Rounder/Flying Fish brand singer-songwriter. Reminiscent of Mark Russell's PBS shows, but with fewer overtly political messages and more musical backing. Covers jazz, old-time rag music and straight acoustic story-songs.

Patrick Sky was one of the most esoteric and cryptic folk singers of the 1960s. His Political Folk & Protest Songs are acoustic ditties accompanied by his warm, vocal, nasal twang. Sky's songs don't seem to have changed much (or at all) since his subcultural hey day, but the satirical content of his songs (Waco, Janet Reno, ATF) are more relevant.
