A musical innovator in every sense of the word, John Fahey began putting out his steel-string fingerpicking records on his own Takoma label in the late '60s. Occupying a space somewhere between Musique Concrete and Bluegrass, Fahey found himself out of touch with both the incense burning pop world and the more militant folksingers of the day. Early on, he was using collected sound collages and dissonant, droning guitar passages intertwined with the fear and anger found on old Acoustic Blues 78s. He has since denounced his early work as "pretentious," finding a haven with new rock experimentalists. He remains a strong, undiminished artistic force, combining noise with classical composition.

His six-string work centers around a nimble fingerpicking approach, colored with occasional slide and harmonics playing.

Mention the name Pentangle to fans and you'll probably witness the same bliss-dazed state affected in cartoons by faeries' wands and frying pans. Fans are likely to slip into a daze of adulation characterized by dilated pupils and a string of back-lit cliches like "inspired," "sublime" and "magical." Indeed, it's difficult to do the original 1969-1973 lineup justice without sounding smarmy. The partnership of Bert Jansch and John Renbourne brought together two legendary fingerpickers -- adherents of a style far surpassing plodding thumb-strumming in difficulty and range. Singer Jacqui McShee was no less of an asset to the group; words passed as smoothly and brilliantly through her vocal chords as light through a prism. Next to Jansch's stony deadpan, her vibrato soars. Bringing together the disparate influences of jazz, traditional British Folk songs, and even the blues, Pentangle thatched their sundry roots into daring, unpredictable albums that roved merrily o'er the channel and overseas. The band gathered timeless yarns, spinning them anew into a lush fabric of folk/jazz. Pentangle continued performing throughout the '80s and '90s, and though the late material rarely possesses the stature of the early work, it can still charm.

This sister act is one of the most underrated Singer-Songwriter duos of the folk world. They were both very active in the folk community during the late 1960s and early 1970s, and by 1976 they signed a recording deal with Warner Brothers. Today their songs still paint vivid and romantic pictures, as wistful daydream narratives roll off their tongues in the form of melodic harmonies. Most of their wispy-liquid songs have a similarly soothing effect as the sounds of running river water.

English Singer-Songwriter JWH first emerged in the late '80s to a certain amount of acclaim and strong comparisons to Elvis Costello. This is not surprising, since he used Costello's backing band the Attractions on his debut record. After a number of albums, he has settled into his role as a folksinger with a nod towards leftist politics and an ability to assimilate certain newer styles such as using drum loops and samples into the Folk-Pop fern.

As a member of the seminal Soft Machine and founder of arty, psychedelic wackos Gong, Allen can be considered one of the godfathers of the British Prog Rock movement. His solo material travels a more folksy, introspective course, with pretty melodies, often in a Renaissance vein, and sparse arrangements highlighted by his acoustic guitar work and distinctive singing. Don't worry, Art Rock fans, this is still weird and unique work.

Voice of the Seven Woods is Rick Tomlinson of Manchester, England, who is part of the B-Music collective that also includes Gruff Rhys of the Super Furry Animals, as well as many DJs and visual artists. Though his music shares the same bloodline as British folk royals John Renbourn and Bert Jansch, it is as much influenced by Turkish psychedelic recordings of the 1970s and South Indian raga, with its mystic tilt and droning rhythmic cycles. Tomlinson's guitar work is both contemplative and spirited, austere and complex. He released several limited-edition vinyl records before he made Voice of the Seven Woods for B-Music in 2007.

The marriage of folk singing and deep percussion has been done many times before, but rarely with as much lopsided charm as by Andy Stochansky. His tenor voice croons and soars above a boiling sea of oil drums, cowbells, shakers, and even a cookie sheet. A deep, slithering bassline insinuates itself into the mix, followed by itchy stabs of guitar crunch and droning electric slide. Over this heady sonic gumbo, he drops his abstract, meandering stream-of-consciousness lyrics. Stochansky has performed or recorded with such folkie luminaries as Ani DiFranco, Jane Siberry, and the Indigo Girls, and sat in with Boston Straight-Edge guru and Modern Lover Jonathan Richman.

While it's a sure sign of virtuosity, having a long back catalog of Mel Bay instructional videos isn't always reflective of a distinct musical identity. Duck Baker is an exception. An authority on fingerstyle guitar, Baker brings a distinct, if understated, personality to his playing, with unorthodox chord voicings and subtle counterpoint maneuvers taking the place of dry technical displays. His style is a hard-to-classify hybrid that draws on Ragtime, country, Appalachian, blues, and Celtic Folk traditions. He's also a master of the not-so-common practice of adapting jazz pieces to solo acoustic guitar, having done arrangements of tunes by everyone from Jelly Roll Morton and Duke Ellington to Thelonious Monk and his near-forgotten Bop-era contemporary Herbie Nichols (the latter is covered exclusively on Baker's 1996 release Spinning Song). Not afraid to bend the rules in order to keep things fresh, he has consistently lived up to his assertion that "tradition implies passing along music that has been handed down from player to player over the years, but not in sealed packages."

Husband and wife duo Snakefarm take Traditional Folk music -- in their case, old American classics like "Frankie and Johnny," "John Henry," and "Tom Dooley," among others -- and catapults it into a modern electronica setting. What makes their material so effective is the effortlessness with which this transition is made. Listening to "This Train That I Ride," for example, reveals how easily the themes with which these old songs are dealing -- loneliness, love, disenchantment, the empty spaces that separate people from places and people they love, struggle and survival -- can be thrust into the atmospheric, distant and sometimes cold and alienating genre of electronic music. As these folk standards have been done and re-done so many times, Snakefarm emerge stronger for not just modernizing the material, but for making these tunes very much their own. If their funky, jazzy version of "St. James Infirmary" doesn't get you grooving, perhaps nothing will.
