One of the most famous masters of the blues, Blind Lemon Jefferson recorded a number of highly revered race records (78s) in the Charleston-soaked 1920s. Jefferson's Texas Blues songs were touched by his two octave vocal range and guitar playing that accompanied his crooning melodies like a third harmonic voice. He poured his hard times and fast living into his playing and songs. His recorded music was popular coast-to-coast (no small feat in the ‘20s), and contributed to the awareness of racial equality. His well thought-out arrangements and random, sporadic, improvised guitar solos have influenced most every blues musician.

Revered by all music-loving peoples as the Patron Saint of Folk Preservation, Alan Lomax wandered around early America's prison camps, honky-tonks and bordellos with recording equipment in an ongoing mission to document the deep-rooted music of the Southland's everyday layman. What he recorded back then was simply called music. Today we have come to know the styles of these recordings as acoustic blues, Delta blues, Appalachian folk and (perhaps most famous) the field hollers that are simply regarded today as "field recordings." Lomax discovered Leadbelly and Mississippi Fred McDowell. He was also the first to ever record Muddy Waters and Woody Guthrie.

One of the most refreshing folk neo traditionalists to emerge in the new millennium, Louisiana-born Dan Reeder seemed to appear from nowhere when his 2003 debut was issued on John Prine's Oh Boy label. The ultimate DIY aesthetics went into the set of short, funny tunes; it was not only home recorded, but Reeder also built and played all the instruments and sang harmony with himself. The self-titled debut did well with critics and slowly caught on for its touching humor and homespun folk blues. After some limited international touring, Reeder issued his sophomore record, Sweetheart, in 2006. He currently lives in Germany and works as a painter.

Much of the earthy, acoustic blues recorded between 1934 and 1941 by Alan Lomax for the Library of Congress was important in that it preserved the music of artists who were not to be heard on tape again -- not true with McKinley Morganfield. The rich, acoustic slide guitar and deep, powerful vocals were becoming legendary across the Delta, a fact that Lomax quickly recognized. The song recorded was "I Be's Troubled," a haunting, soulful number with amazing guitar playing reflecting the influence of Son House and the sound of Robert Johnson. The tune was to become a hit when Morganfield later changed its title and re-recorded it as "I Can't Be Satisfied," more importantly changing his own name to Muddy Waters.

Lifelong Mississippi farmer Otha Turner was one of the very last of the fife blues players, a tradition that almost never saw recording. His two albums, Everybody Hollerin' Goat (1998) and From Senegal to Senatobia (1999), were once among the only documents, aside from personal memory, that the form ever existed. Throughout his life, Turner, along with a collection of friends and relatives that played with him as the Rising Star Fife and Drum Corps, performed exclusively at cookouts and parties at his own and local farms. The group appeared on a comp titled Mississippi Blues in Memphis, Vol. 1 in 1993, but it wasn't until 1998 (when Turner was 90 years old) that he and his family self-released the album Everybody Hollerin' Goat. A year later, Turner collaborated with African musicians, called the Afrossippi All Stars, on the Fat Possum release From Senegal to Senatobia. Turner died in 2003, just as he was receiving wider recognition through such channels as NPR and Good Morning America and planned to record a third album. His protege and granddaughter Sharde Thomas has since taken up his fife in the Rising Star band.

A 1953 discovery by folk music historian Alan Lomax brought Margaret Barry to the attention of an international audience. Prior to the influential recordings he made of her, Barry was a Cork street musician supporting herself through the performance of traditional Celtic Folk songs. Accompanied by her own forlorn banjo picking, she sings with unfinished power and has been credited with penning a number of now-standard songs in the Irish tradition.

Many a clog dance has been performed to the music of Bascom Lamar Lunsford. Mostly recorded in the 1920s, his Appalachian folk songs often reveal dualities: they are both eerie and festive, lovelorn and romantic. His dexterous banjo picking combines with a crooning mountain voice that can make your hair stand on end. Lunsford was one of the first pastoral musicians to put stories of his life into his songs in a way that captivated listeners and earned him the title among many country and folk music enthusiasts as the king of folk music.
