Malmo, Sweden's Jonas Altberg was born in 1984, and you can hear his youthful exuberance leaping out of the music he records as Basshunter. In his teens, he began experimenting with Fruity Loops music software, and by 2006 he'd scored a deal with Warner Music -- not a bad learning curve. In his official bio, he sounds a bit baffled himself by the rate at which he went from being a video-game expert to a musician "that performed almost every day all over Scandinavia." (Some things haven't changed: He still lives at home with his parents.)

Basshunter's first release was 2006's Anna Boten single, a glammy trance stomper notable in part for its Swedish vocals. Later that year he followed up with his debut album, a collection of stab-happy trance ("Strand Tylosand," named after the beach by his family home) and harder, more acidic fare ("I'm Your Bass Creator"). In 2008, with his international profile bolstered by Ultra's re-release of his album, he came out with the singles "Please Don't Go" and "Now You're Gone," both of them lighters-in-the-air trance ballads.

A favorite among Progressive Trance followers for his epic DJ sets and
larger-than-life original tunes, Holland-born DJ Tiesto rose to the
forefront of the genre in record time. Not unlike contemporaries BT, Ferry
Corsten, Paul Van Dyk and Sasha & Digweed (to name but a few), Tiesto's take
on Trance is anything but alienating. His own tracks are grandiose efforts
featuring wispy female vocals embedded in a hypnotic atmosphere awash with
dream-like synths.

Armin Van Buuren spent many a young year at home in Holland glued to the radio listening to the likes of Jean Michel Jarre and Ben Librand before he was legally allowed to enter a club. Those quiet evenings alone with his mother's computer and a set of decks soon paid off: at the tender age of 19, he released "Blue Fear" and went on to become a global trance sensation. Early fame led to the typically hectic schedule of remixes, productions and performances, but Van Buuren still managed to finish his law degree just to have something in case the music career didn't pan out. This no doubt helped once he decided to set up his own record company, Armada, in 2003.

Love it or hate it, "Blue Fear" is classic Euro trance -- lush layering of chords with a seductive bassline and big euphoric breakdowns. Van Buuren is quick to differentiate his style from the more clichéd end of the trance spectrum: "Trance for me as a genre refers to the old Oakenfold sound, the warm melodic driving music, not the euphoric cheese with vocals, predictable breaks and drum rolls -- I was playing trance before it became diluted and commercialized, before it became a dirty word," he explains at www.arminvanbuuren.com. Keen to promote his version of the genre, Van Buuren plays all over the world and has a weekly radio show, "A State of Trance," on ID&T in Holland. Regularly nominated as one of the most popular DJs in the world, he is usually to be found sharing the top three slots with Paul Van Dyk and Tiesto. His debut album, 76, was nominated for a Dancestar Award in 2004, in the Best New Artist Album category, and he is currently working on a second release for 2005. "It's not love for music, it's a passion, and it goes beyond liking, and beyond a hobby, it's about a way of living. Music is essential for my life," he says.

Bill Leeb and Rhys Fulber, formerly of such Industrial dance acts as Frontline Assembly, Noise Unit, Intermix and Synaesthesia, take a stylistic leap into more accessible dance tracks under the guise of Delerium. Originally included on a variety of electronic remix albums such as Emd/Nettwerk's Plastic Compilation, Delerium's ambient-pop mixes shed all industrial elements in favor of radio-friendly club rhythms laced with dark, esoteric flavors. The silky vocal stylings of such female guest artists as Sarah McLachlan, Camille Henderson, Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance, Kristy Thirsk of the Rose Chronicles and Single Gun Theory's Jacqui Hunt lift up Delerium's mysterious blend of haunting melodies and tribal percussion.

DJ Sammy's penchant for Trance and 1980s rock is finally paying off. In 2002, his adaptations of Bryan Adams' "Heaven" and Don Henley's "Boys of Summer" appeared on dance charts and mainstream mix compilations such as DJ Encore's Ultra Dance Vol. 2. Much like Puff Daddy and Will Smith, Sammy reworks familiar songs into more dance-friendly formats, but instead of using hip-hop flavored beats and rhymes, his style relies on such dramatic electronica techniques as arpeggio synth builds and diva-led vocals. Prior to the release of his career-changing Heaven LP, the Spanish producer spent over a decade behind the 1's and 2's as an underground club DJ performing throughout Europe.

As the most successful German musical act ever, Scooter have surpassed Michael Jackson, Britney Spears and the Pet Shop Boys as the highest-ranking group on the German Media Control charts. But whereas those artists create music for mainstream audiences, Scooter's music is all about hardcore techno. At last count, Scooter had enjoyed over 400 weeks on the pop charts by pounding their way into the dancing shoes of the German masses. Driving trance and hardcore dance beats lay devastation wherever they are heard. Indeed, where many of the mid-'90s rave acts have either disbanded or changed their style, Scooter have continued to dominate the German club scene with songs like the sing-along soccer stadium anthem -- featuring British group Status Quo -- "Jump That Rock (Whatever You Want)" and their 1994 hit "Hyper Hyper." Scooter's techno party anthems are all about having fun. On stage, the group is known for its punk-rock antics and over-the-top performances that feature fireworks and spectacular stage effects. With over 17 albums and 35 singles, Scooter are far from slowing down.

Causing severe disorder to rational thought, Infected Mushroom, very true to their name, are an uncontrollable, Psychedelic force. Classically trained musicians Erez Aizen and Amit Duvdevani create essential Israeli Goa Trance with diverse ears for sound. They are unafraid to weave classical motifs, Jungle breaks, hand percussion, and guitar textures into their vibrant, colorful tapestry of acidlines and psychedelic synth textures. Mutant voices, chainsaw low-end oscillations, and flailing arpeggios wriggle their way through your central nervous system. Their tracks are unyielding waves of tainted sounds hammered by solid Trance bass kicks.

Schiller, the project of Grammy-nominated DJ/producer Christopher von Deylen, create soothing New Age dance music with a hint of trance and ambient elements. German electronic pioneer von Deylen named the group for the famous 18th-century German poet and philosopher Friedrich Schiller. In 1998, Schiller released the hugely popular "Glockenspiel," a straight-up trance song that featured the bell-like glockenspiel sampled over a bouncy dance beat. The international success of the song pushed them to create a full-length album, and the following year, they released Zeitgeist. The album featured more trance singles aimed directly at the club scene, but Schiller also began venturing into ambient, New Age and breakbeat genres on future albums like Voyage, Life and Prologue. Schiller's musical influences include Tangerine Dream, Jean-Michel Jarre and Kraftwerk, and they count artists such as Sarah Brightman, Sinead O'Connor and Mike Oldfield as fans. In late 2008, Schiller were nominated for four Grammy Awards, including Song of the Year for the chart-topping trance single "Tired of Being Alone."

Joining D.H.T. when she was just 15, Belgian singer Edmee Daenen was not able to perform live with them until she turned 18 back in 2003. But once on board, she and fellow countryman DJ Da Rick became known for their highly energetic shows, blending up-tempo Euro-dance rhythms with her wistful vocal style. Their success came from a combination of original compositions along with some carefully chosen dance updates of eighties hits, most notably a hardcore version of Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart" (2001). But it was their take on Roxette's "Listen to Your Heart" (2005) that really made them a global concern; propelling them into the upper reaches of most European charts. They followed the hit with their debut album, Listen to Your Heart, then cemented their success with a global tour.

Gentle, solid bass pulsation lifts you higher and higher out of your body, lightening the load for your limbs to swim through thick waves of foamy analog streams. Acoustic percussion is intertwined with beats that are essentially electric, resulting in a mixture of organic and synthetic hallucinogens that share synergy and unpredictability. No journey, whether it be to the kitchen, the warehouse, to Goa, deeper into the self, or otherwise should be predictable, but rather a constant, lifting rush of input. Juno Reactor is that sensation: a welcome bombardment of rhythmic intensity and psychedelic enlightenment.

The Netherlands has produced some of trance's biggest names, including Tiesto and Armin Van Buuren. A key member of the country's trance elite is Ferry Corsten, whose 1999 single "Out of the Blue," recorded as System F, is credited as helping to establish the very sound of Dutch trance. Since then, Corsten has remained a regular member of the top 10 jocks in DJ Magazine's annual Top 100 DJ poll, thanks to a nonstop touring schedule that's seen him headlining festivals from Miami to Malaysia, playing to tens of thousands at every stop. But the road is only one part of Corsten's popularity. Credit the other half to his productions -- recorded without engineers or ghostwriters, an anomaly in best-selling electronic music -- which infuse trance's hands-in-the-air template with touches of electro and even hip-hop.

Six Degrees recording artist Banco de Gaia, the exotic designation of London native Toby Marks, serves up catchy, commercially approved dance tunes that will satiate longtime fans, as well as a new fan base of globally conscious Skint followers. Applauded on the electronica scene for his unconventional Ambient Dub and Tribal House grooves that marry terrestrial and ethereal elements, Banco de Gaia makes his mark on Big Beat territory with ferocious, crowd-pleasing energy that recalls the spirit of Acid House's heyday. Strong male vocal loops, flavored with Arabic and Eastern sound samples, fly over steady Breakbeat rhythms that promote big party vibes. Feel-good grooves for international beat-seekers.

Essential listening for the acid, ambient, psytrance and Burning Man communities, it's not surprising that England's Simon Posford used to record under the name Hallucinogen. Teaming up with ex-Quintessence flautist Raja Ram, tPosford formed Shpongle, a group credited with fashioning a sound that creates "psycho-geometric, atomic telepathic, shimmering, incandescent dream dilations" in the listener. This sort of thing would seem to make them an easy target for those who would bracket the entire genre as the tragic blathering of many a fried mind, but that would ignore the massive production talent and surprising accessibility they both brought to the sound. Their three-album career (Are You Shpongled?(1998), Tales Of The Inexpressible(2001),Nothing Lasts…But Nothing Is Lost(2005))plus a remixer effort is as good an introduction to the psytrance genre as one can get. Avoiding the endless repetitive noodling of some of the more Goa-esque artists in the field, Simon and Raja create real songs and use panoramic production values to enhance the massive breakdowns and frantic beats. The end result is clearly psytrance, but it's quality psytrance, ranking up there with Atmos and Infected Mushroom, and well worth investigating, even if you've never dreamt of going north of 135 BPM in your life.

When Astral Projection broke onto the international psychedelic Trance scene, they broke hard. As dance floors were looking for commanding, soul awakening hypnosis, A.P. was there with glorious, vaulting synths and floor-pounding kicks that sent the headz out of their heads every time a needle dragged through their mystical vinyl grooves. They also tapped into the eruption of spiritual exaltation associated with Goa as a necessary stopover on the Trance party circuit. Their music is strewn with non-Western melodies, samples of chants, and references to Hindu spirituality. At the core, their music is a deep pulse finding resonance with the Om.

Starting out in the tradition of the Prodigy, Amsterdam-based rock/electronic hybrid Junkie XL (aka Tom Holkenborg) attacked your eardrums with a crackling, complex mix of hip-hop approved breaks, carelessly edgy vocals and blood-curdling guitar riffs. Carefully produced, dense tracks included both live instrumentation and electronic manipulation to draw a fanbase of headbangers and club-goers. That fanbase got even larger in 2002, when his remix of Elvis Presley's "A Little Less Conversation" hit a Nike World Cup commercial -- and the charts in 24 countries. Around the same time, his friendship with trance master Sasha led Holkenborg to develop a more progressive house sound. With his newfound clout and direction, Holkenborg recruited a host of superstars to contribute to 2004's concept album Radio JXL: A Broadcast From the Computer Hell Cabin.

The man of a million aliases, Holland's Carlo Resoort (aka 4 Strings) has mastered the art of soulful trance thanks to his good taste in vocalists and his proficiency at the deck. A skilled producer who also tried his hand at deejaying and remixing, Resoort hit it big in the U.K. with "Day Time" and later the massive "Take Me Away (Into the Night)."

Stateside commercial sensation BT is labeled as a Progressive House purveyor, a self-proclaimed Anglophile, a recognized film score producer, and a staunch advocate of dance music innovation with a deep affection for the U.K. scene. Credited with turning out some of the most epic and soul-boosting tracks in House and Trance history, this critically acclaimed musician composes records that are both emotive and memorable to international followers with impeccable taste. Corralling the most moving melodies that acoustic guitars and pianos can produce, BT backs up each lush soundscape with breakbeats bent on demolishing the dancefloor. Forever forward-looking, BT's unpredictable, ever-changing style takes the Progressive arena to the next level by fusing breakbeat elements with Drum 'n' Bass effects.

Mainstream favorite Alice Deejay, a Euro-Trance collective set to preserve an unforgettable pop feel within contemporary club culture, targets a youthful set of up-and-coming clubbers. This Netherlands-based girl-centric trio is led by Judy, the precious face at the frontline of a group whose sound is synonymous with the sugary sweet Euro-Dance standard. Hook-laden tunes feature carefree female vocals over the type of trendy beats and crowd-pleasing melodies that essentially define the European anthem. For the moment.

Made up of DJs Jody Wisternoff and Nick Warren, the Bristol, England-based duo signed to DeConstruction Records in the mid-'90s and released their debut, self-titled album soon after.
Describing his style as "percussive wet funk," Timo Maas has come a long way from his early days spinning chart hits and simple trance at friends' parties in Germany. An early hit with "Mama Konda" (1997) under his Orinoko moniker caught the attention of some big names in the dance world and he soon picked up several high profile residencies, including a regular slot at New York's Twilo. By this time he had moved on to a big beat progressive house sound, with remixes by Azzido Da Bass' "Dooms Night" and Lustral's epic "Everytime" cementing his reputation. His debut solo work (actually recorded with long-time production partner Martin Buttrich) Loud (2002) took both fans and critics by surprise. Instead of a predictably banging techno-electro-house energy fest, he produced something altogether more thoughtful. Tracks like "Help Me" almost had a pop feel to them, the break beat monster, "Shifter" would remain a club classic for years to come while "To Get Down" and "Ubik" called to mind Blancmange and Heaven 17 in the best ways possible. Pictures (2005) confounded fans once again and proved to be an altogether more mellow affair, leaning closer to the rock world than house, perhaps reflecting a more calm private life resulting from marriage and parenthood.

Based out of Tel Aviv, Israel, Angel Tears is the joint project of Momi Ochion
and Sebastian James Taylor. Ochion, whose roots lie in Israeli pop and world
fusion music, is the melody man of the duo—the brain behind the compositional
aspects and a lot of the studio work. Taylor, who composes and performs much
of the music, hails from London and is known for his work with the electronic
groups Kaya Project, Shakta and Digitalis.
Rhythyms range from electronic beats to the earthy thump of the Bedouin
dharbouka and other indigenous drums. Asian and Middle Eastern vocals lend a
spiritual quality to the music, and instrumentation includes Tibetan flutes,
Indian sitar, Arabian violin, Middle Eastern horns, grand piano and electric
guitar all sharing the same space. Mellow synthesizers swirl amidst the
elements, bringing everything together into a cohesive package.
The group’s music is found on many global fusion compilations, including Buddha
Bar 2, SupperClub, and Lotus Lounge. Their songs are also heard on popular TV
shows including Sex in the City, Third Watch and The West Wing. Perfect for
everything from yoga to fitness to lounging on the couch.

The U.K.'s Elliot Morgan-Jones and Nick Woolfson unite their sonic trance-inducing techniques under the moniker Sounds from the Ground. "Drawn to the Woman," a track from the 1996 Waveform Records release Kin features dreamy melodies swirling around downbeat rhythms like fog gathering over a cityscape on fast forward. Silky female spoken word vocal samples slink in and out of the celestial mix like expensive lingerie. Inspiring lyrics and delicate bouts of giggles waft up from a pool of earthy ambient bliss. Though best utilized as a soundtrack for the steamy scenes of yet another "9 1/2 Weeks," the digital, electric edge on these soft grooves maintain a chill-out appeal for intimate rooms.

Born in El Salvador and bred in Maui, Keoki takes his well-known moniker from the elusive love-child of a legendary Hawaiian king. Internationally recognized for his groundbreaking, boundary-dissolving Techno techniques, Keoki occupies the same sonic plateau as the Crystal Method, Rabbit in the Moon and Cirrus. Acknowledged for revitalizing the Trance scene with his singular, spiritually enlightened vision, Keoki's mixes add blistering breakbeats to mind-bending synths. Steadily scorching rhythms take on a treacherous tone as blood-curdling vocal samples struggle with flickering melodies like a series of fuses in the process of blowing out. Speaking like a wise Tantric teacher, Keoki sums up his 1997 Moonshine Music release Ego Trip this way: "The music can deliver the ultimate orgasm."

One-half of the Trance duo Union Jack, Simon Berry's solo side project explores hard, melodic territory under the moniker Art of Trance. Represented by Platipus Records, the much-respected London-based label that launched the career of Progressive House legend Robert Miles, Art of Trance turn out inspiring tunes determined and destined to achieve anthem status.
Acclaimed for creating a number of dents in the U.K. Top 40 charts, this genre-defying trio conquered a variety of dance floor trends: Acid House, Trip-Hop, Trance and Big Beat. Accomplished remixers whose credits include tracks originating from such eclectic acts as New Order, Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Bjork, former housemates Jon Fugler, Mike Tournier and Mike Bryant have earned a reputation for eluding categorization with a vengeance and a smirk. Fluke's still-growing following tends not toward the flighty, trend-sensitive set, but to dedicated loyalists addicted to the trio's ever-changing sound.

Top-flight DJ/producer Christopher Lawrence is the crowned king of trance in the U.S. A stateside Paul van Dyk who stands in the company of fellow Los Angeles scene-rulers DJ John Kelley, Sandra Collins and Doran, this powerful force commands clubland with his confident blend of hard House and tech-trance. Unfaltering beats spin through limitless atmospheres filled with dramatic synth flourishes and precise techno effects.
