Aphex Twin follows Newton's Third Law: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Describing his music becomes a web of contradictions. For every violent and vitriolic "Come to Daddy," there is an absurd children's song such as "Milkman." For every acid anthem ("Digeridoo"), there is a frazzled complex of rhythms ("INKEY$"). For every surging, grinning dance track such as "Donkey Rhubarb," there is the near stillness of "Weathered Stone" or "Parallel Stripes." A track-by-track breakdown may not equate a balance of yin and yang, but throughout his career as Aphex Twin, AFX, Caustic Window, Polygon Window, the Dice Man and countless other pseudonyms, Richard D. James has created what is perhaps the widest spectrum of electronic sound by a single artist.

With an ear for delicate electronic textures and earth-shattering breaks, Orbital became an unrivaled force in dance music in the 1990s. As likely to drop a crass sample as a gently caressing synthline, their elaborate tracks are orchestrated with incredible attention to minute detail but often fit into the greater whole of an album's worth of material. They move from chill room atmospheres of tickling rhythms and feather-light melodies to ripping beats that rebound against frazzled synthlines. Orbital never descend into New Age fluff or hardcore macho aggression. While their tracks are exacting demonstrations of studio mastery and performance wit, they achieve equilibrium between mindful headphone music and kinetic body inspiration. Phil and Paul Hartnoll's final release as Orbital is 2004's Blue Album.

With a groundbreaking sound that obliterates the dividing lines between Techno, Trance and Breakbeat stylings, Underworld bury a subtle Indie Rock attitude slightly beneath the textural surface of their blissful synthetic insanity. With the drop of each new release, this U.K. sensation proves their worthiness as one of the most innovative and important dance fusion acts of the 1990s. Accredited as heavy hitters in the struggle to bring dance music to the attention of the mainstream, electronica darlings Underworld continue to draw an impressive fanbase on both the international club scene and the airwaves with their widely influential style that blends electronic intricacy with king-size, floor-friendly grooves.

Displaying the kind of hubris that only a 23-year-old can muster, Scotland's Calvin Harris launched his career with the cheekily titled 2007 album I Created Disco. The title may have been slightly off-base (newsflash: Diddy didn't invent the remix, either), but Harris' LCD Soundsystem-inspired electro-funk was still punchy enough to catch the attention of Kylie Minogue, who enlisted him to co-write and produce two songs on her 2007 album, X. In 2008, Harris officially broke out of the electro-pop underground with "Dance Wiv Me," a collaboration with Dizzee Rascal that debuted at No. 1 on the U.K. pop charts. Harris' sophomore album, Ready for the Weekend, appeared in 2009. Like his debut, it's carefree and eager to please, but it boasts polished-up production skills and a range that takes in '80s funk, French house, trance-infused Euro-pop and even a smidgen of rock 'n' roll.

London's Simian Mobile Disco grew out of the indie rock band Simian, whose song "We Are Your Friends" catapulted them into the indie dance spotlight on the strength of Justice's well-loved remix. As S.M.D., James Ford and James Shaw abandoned most of their rock trappings in favor of an indie dance sound with roots in '80s synth-pop and acid house. They grew their rep with frequent appearances on Paris' Kitsune label before breaking out with their debut longplayer in 2007. Titled in homage to synthesizer waveforms, Attack Sustain Decay Release swirls together bits of Phuture, New Order, Zapp and other retro touchstones without ever losing its freshness. At a time when peers like Justice were redefining electro as a genre to be measured in headbanging intensity, A.D.S.R. stood out for its relative restraint. Simian Mobile Disco returned in 2009 with Temporary Pleasure, on which cameos from Jamie Lidell, Beth Ditto, Gruff Rhys and Hot Chip's Alexis Taylor -- plus forays into freestyle, techno and EBM -- helped expand the group's already ambitious range.

Boys Noize (Alex Ridha) shares bookings with filter-disco punks like Justice, and his music hits the same high-intensity frequencies, like a disco dentist with a glitter-encrusted drill. He loves overdriven synthesizers and has the same talent for making his tracks heave like a bellows, sucking all the air out of the room with every chord. But Ridha and his Berlin label Boysnoize have more purist instincts than many of his peers: Chicago house and grinding techno play significant roles in his music, which is as minimalist in its structure as it is maximalist in its attitude. As Boys Noize, Ridha has recorded for Gigolo, Turbo, Kitsune and, most extensively, his own label, which has also put out monster tracks from Housemeister, D.I.M., Siriusmo and even the Faint. Forget the nu-rave cliches; this is the real deal.

Zombie Nation enjoys the rare position of being famous even to millions of people who have no idea of his existence. That's thanks to his song "Kernkraft 400," a minimalist electro track from 1999 that inexplicably went on to become a sports-event anthem. But there's a lot more to Zombie Nation's Florian Senfter than Jock Jams. Drawing from both classic electro's clean, machine-set cadences and the murkier sonics of experimental techno, Senfter has carved out an idiosyncratic body of work. Having established his electro credentials with 1999's Leichenschmaus and its runaway hit, he returned in 2002 with "Unload," an Italo-disco vamp featuring Berlin minimal-house diva Cassy Britton. In 2006, sophomore album Black Toys offered a richer vision, with fluid arrangements and somber tones offsetting brittle rhythms and overdriven synths. The album sounds like a missing link between Kompakt's brand of electro-pop and Britain's cheekier breakbeat enthusiasts. In 2009, Zombie Nation returned with Zombielicious, a brash collection of galloping jams with its zombie eye clearly focused on fans of LCD Soundsystem and Justice.

The Berlin-based, Swedish-born Axel Willner makes a virtue of simplicity on his shimmering techno epics. Grounded in the constant pulse and flickering repetitions of Kompakt, the Cologne minimal techno label he calls home, Willner's music turns to pop to give it extra body, heft and color. He first came to attention for "Over the Ice," a 2006 single that spun a snippet of Kate Bush into a churn of pulsing synths and determined drums, and its B-side, "A Paw in My Face," which did the same with an even unlikelier source: Lionel Richie's "Hello." In 2007, he released From Here We Go Sublime, a full album of gossamer yearning that easily lived up to its title. Expanding to a full-band lineup complete with bass and drums for the resulting tour, he returned in 2009 with Yesterday and Today. The album boasts a fuller sound, bristling with bells and hard-to-place samples. (Not all of them: the Cocteau Twins' "Lorelei" figures prominently in "The More That I Do," and "Everybody's Got to Learn Sometime" incorporates Korgis samples in the cover version.) The sublime never felt quite so within reach.

Reigning supreme over the international DJ community, Cox's popularity grew steadily through the Acid House era, the rage of Hardcore, and the forward-looking phenomena of Techno with his uncanny skills on the decks. Drawing on a vast heritage of jazz, soul, Funk and hip-hop, Cox's all-embracing sound defies classification, leading dance fanatics to elevate him to trendsetting status for his dynamic onstage persona and energetic sets.
Jochem Paap, one of Techno's most brilliant luminaries, was an integral part of the early 1990s evolution into headphone, mind-warping Techno. His sounds were central to the birth of Intelligent (IDM); he created tracks that were too elaborate and heady for the visceral movements of the dancefloor. From Rotterdam, he was also one of the first DJ/programmers to bring the Detroit and Chicago sounds to Germany and Holland. His tracks create cold urban environments that echo Detroit's futurist projections. He also produces entrancing, luminous, synthetic textures, often eschewing the hard, dropping break for beat evolution and rushing rivers of atmosphere. In recent years, his beats have become crisper and more distorted with a tense, midnight paranoia despite his ever-present florescent glow.

Laurent Garnier has been around. He debuted at the start of the Acid House movement in 1987 at Manchester's Hacienda, and was the first European DJ to gain a residency. Thought by many to be France’s premier ambassador for house and techno, he was invited onto BBC Radio 1’s 'Peel Sessions' and has played headlining slots at all the major dance festivals. His first album, Shot In The Dark (1994), was well received by the dance community, but it was his second release,30 (1997), that really brought him to the public eye, winning the 'Victoire De La Musique' in 1998, and having a live performance of "Acid Eiffel" being broadcast from the award ceremony on prime time French TV. The 250,000 selling Unreasonable Behaviour (2000) followed, with the hit single 'The Man With The Red Face', leading to a global tour and a series of videos from hot young directors. His sound leans towards the harder more industrial side of house, but there are unexpected jazzy rhythms and deep funky beats that keep his audience guessing. "What I play is shakey shakey, wiggle your bottie", he says. What we hear is throbbing deep sensual beats, minimal techno, sweet strings and driving hardcore hands-in-the-air funk.

Kirk Degiorgio is a man obsessed with soulful music, from the 1970s electric Fusion experiments of Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis and the Motor City soul of early Detroit Techno to the newest developments in hip-hop and R&B. His teenage record-collecting habit kicked into overdrive in the late '80s when he was bit by the Acid House bug, a period that culminated with pilgrimages to Detroit and Chicago, as well as the formation of his highly influential A.R.T. label. The early '90s saw A.R.T. releasing classic records by B-12, the Black Dog, Carl Craig and Degiorgio's best known alias, As One. Throughout the decade, Degiorgio put out a string of immaculately conceived EPs and LPs under that name on labels such as New Electronica, Shield, Clear and Mo Wax. House, Techno, jazz, Breakbeat and Electro are part of his palette, and his records frequently combine flavors of each style into a deep, soulful sound. Known worldwide as a true music fan, he is always in demand as a DJ, remixer and collaborator.

You might call Dave Taylor a jack of all trades. Since the turn of the century, he's produced deep, funky house music -- indeed, "jacking" house, in the parlance of '80s Chicago -- for labels like Classic, Freerange and Jesse Rose's Dubsided, both in the groups Induceve and Switch and on his own as Solid Groove. (Switch, initially a duo with Induceve member Trevor Loveys, is now Taylor solo.) But he's also produced hits for M.I.A. and Santogold, energizing their pop structures with a distinctly underground sensibility. Despite the range of his sound, Taylor's music always bumps and throbs, propelled by guttural bass lines and fat, distorted drum samples; his wobbly rhythms and unruly sonics have led to his music being branded "fidget house," an apt description of his herky-jerky sense of groove. Switch's biggest hit to date is 2006's "A Bit Patchy," an update of the Incredible Bongo Band's famous "Apache" (get it?) overlaid with an infectious sample of dancehall vocals; in 2008, Freerange released a collection of Taylor's solo and duo tracks and remixes for the label.

Frankfurt's Sven Vath found fame early on: The 1986 song "Electrica Salsa," recorded with his electro-pop group Off, was a worldwide hit that established the wunderkind as a Euro-dance icon. But it was with the arrival of trance that Vath hit his stride, and he's been galloping ever since, both as a celebrated DJ and founder of the labels Eye Q, Harthouse and Cocoon. Vath is a bona fide impresario; today Cocoon boasts a booking agency, Ibiza residencies and a futuristic mega-club complete with restaurant and private nooks for canoodling. But he's clearly kept the spirit of Off's "Organization for Fun": Fond of appearing as a harlequin, clown or fully made-up member of KISS -- and occasionally spied making out with Richie Hawtin on YouTube -- Vath embraces his role as the crown prince of techno. When it comes to rocking parties or releasing killer tracks and compilations, though, Vath and Cocoon are dead serious.

Green Velvet's Curtis Jones comes at you from Planet House, with a trick bag full of filthy jack trax and dirty innuendoes. He debuted his Green Velvet alias and his Relief label in 1993 with the corrosive Preacher Man, then followed up with classics like Flash and The Stalker. Jones virtually defined Hard House, crafting austere but funky tunes with a dangerous, demented edge. The popularity of his Green Velvet sound (and that of his more commercial alter ego Cajmere), combined with his efforts to promote such artists as DJ Sneak, Paul Johnson and Gemini, helped fuel the Chicago House revival of the '90s.

Justin Harris & Luke Solomon, the duo behind Freaks, describe their sound as part Kraftwerk, part Green Velvet, part George Clinton and just a dash of Basement Jaxx. Walking the line between quirky and commercial, the Freaks like to mess with traditional house formats, chopping up Latin riffs into mechanical loops, layering vocodered rodent sounds into sparse blip-hop-house beats and generally doing their best to bring a creative edge to what they see as a stale house sound. They have released three albums -- The Beat Diaries, Meanwhile Back At The Disco and The Man Who Lived Underground , along with other remixes and singles on their Music For Freaks label. From mellow electro grooves to down and dirty house, the Freaks' sound is brutal but funky-sexy, hard-hitting but minimalist.

The 12-inches started slipping into circulation in '93. Housed in stark white sleeves, their labels were speckled with lo-res images of broken chromosomes and words like "Octagon," "Phylyps Trak" and "Inversion." Few bought 'em. And those who did had no idea who was behind such an incredible fusion of techno, dub and fuzzy decay: What is this Basic Channel? And where does it come from? Of course, the intervening years have solved one of techno's great mysteries -- but they haven't tempered the music's allure. Like Iggy & the Stooges, the German production duo of Mark Ernestus and Moritz Von Oswald (aka Maurizio) is far more revered now than in the mid '90s. Although Basic Channel only released about nine sides in two years, they essentially established minimal techno as a genre. At the same time, virtually none of their followers have ever matched Von Oswald and Ernestus' conceptual force and rhythmic intensity. Basic Channel really sound like nothing else, and that's fine by them. The Berlin-based producers are notoriously guarded about their music-making processes. After retiring the B.C. moniker in 1995, the duo continued to produce mind-blowing jams as Rhythm & Sound.

Simon Begg creates a perfect bridge between the libido-driven grooves of MoWax/Ninja Tune Downtempo and heady Intelligent dance music. He drops the phattest breaks in awkward rhythms and creates a tension between four-on-the-floor rocking beats and confounding beat-box angularity. Every break is full of surprises as beautiful samples drop into the mix unexpectedly and break from the traditions of unimpeded breakbeat flow. But Si Begg tracks are deeply rooted in the traditions of raw dance beats that will shake a party at its core.

An Englishman is a rare enough sight in Los Angeles. Even more uncharacteristic is the figure of Damian Lazarus, a dapper Brit whose move to SoCal is helping shore up the city's underappreciated underground techno scene. The former music journalist and City Rockers A&R man is best known as a DJ, both for his numerous mix CDs and his incendiary, hedonistic club sessions. His preference for deep, dark, dirty house and techno -- always a bit wrong-sounding in just the right ways -- also provides the focus for his label, Crosstown Rebels, home to favorites of the minimal scene like Dinky, Pier Bucci and Jamie Jones. In 2009, he finally made the move to production, releasing an odd, ambitious album of house-infused electronic pop, Smoke the Monster Out, for Berlin's Get Physical Label.

You need only look to Loco Dice for a quintessential expression of contemporary electronic music's nomadic spirit. Raised in Dusseldorf, Germany, from Tunisian roots, the DJ and producer came up as a hip-hop DJ until crossing over to the world of house, techno and minimal with the beginning of his residency at Ibiza's infamous DC-10. The same year, he and Martin Buttrich began a fruitful studio collaboration that would lead to a string of underground hits for labels like Minus, Cadenza, Ovum, Four:Twenty and Cocoon. Loco Dice -- born Yassine Ben Achour -- relocated to New York to record his debut album, and the city's spirit makes itself amply felt in the music's blurring of voices, sounds and textures. While not overtly multicultural in content, the album suggests a kind of polyglot perspective that could only come from an artist with a wandering imagination.

Leftfield Techno of all flavors from Source label co-founder David Moufang. With apparent roots in jazz and avant rock, his electronic compositions make the most of warm, human sounds and an improvisational approach. Varying in density from ambient bleeps to driving acid, there's a restlessly exploratory nature at work that keeps the music fresh and listenable.

Strangely enough, Dave Clarke started off his career in the mid-'80s as a hip-hop DJ before moving on to Acid House and Detroit Techno in the early '90s. His sense of rhythm and amazingly impressive DJ skills have earned him more respect than most producers. He has a longstanding relationship with visceral, intense Techno, and is considered one of the innovators of the genre. He's an especially big fan of the minimal Detroit Techno sound, focusing on mechanical pulse and underlying Funk. He's probably best-known for his full-length debut Archive 1(1996), which included one of Techno's best anthems, "Red 2.'' Clarke's style is both sinister and energizing, and his live sets are rarely a disappointment.
