A revered, recognizable figure on the dance music scene since the early '90s, the enigmatic producer/DJ Moby was catapulted into mainstream stardom with the 1999 release of Play. A surprise hit, Play delved into highly personal areas in a downtempo vein never before explored in any of his previous releases. A master of such styles as techno, house, trance, ambient and breakbeat to name just a few, Moby is blessed with the ability to strike a sincere, emotive chord with a wide range of dance music devotees.

Aphex Twin follows Newton's Third Law: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Describing his music becomes a web of contradictions. For every violent and vitriolic "Come to Daddy," there is an absurd children's song such as "Milkman." For every acid anthem ("Digeridoo"), there is a frazzled complex of rhythms ("INKEY$"). For every surging, grinning dance track such as "Donkey Rhubarb," there is the near stillness of "Weathered Stone" or "Parallel Stripes." A track-by-track breakdown may not equate a balance of yin and yang, but throughout his career as Aphex Twin, AFX, Caustic Window, Polygon Window, the Dice Man and countless other pseudonyms, Richard D. James has created what is perhaps the widest spectrum of electronic sound by a single artist.

With an ear for delicate electronic textures and earth-shattering breaks, Orbital became an unrivaled force in dance music in the 1990s. As likely to drop a crass sample as a gently caressing synthline, their elaborate tracks are orchestrated with incredible attention to minute detail but often fit into the greater whole of an album's worth of material. They move from chill room atmospheres of tickling rhythms and feather-light melodies to ripping beats that rebound against frazzled synthlines. Orbital never descend into New Age fluff or hardcore macho aggression. While their tracks are exacting demonstrations of studio mastery and performance wit, they achieve equilibrium between mindful headphone music and kinetic body inspiration. Phil and Paul Hartnoll's final release as Orbital is 2004's Blue Album.

Each blissed-out release from Grammy award-winning producer William Orbit is like an invitation on a journey where the ultimate destination is an intimate meeting between the listener and the universe. Although he is widely regarded as one of the most well-known purveyors of ambient-related dance styles, the elusive Orbit accepts the limelight with modest reluctance. Responsible for introducing Madonna to the future of mainstream music with her critically-acclaimed 1998 release Ray of Light and introducing another facet of Brit-Pop favorite Blur's sound on 13, Orbit's list of production credits are as distinguished as they are long. As a solo artist, this chill-out master constructs boundless soundscapes sewn together with lavish strings and sweet moves to create a trance-inducing experience that is cosmically epic, awe-inspiring and spiritually enlightening.

Having originally made their mark producing club-oriented dance hits like "Stakker" and the classic "Papua New Guinea," the duo of Brian Dougans and Gary Cobain has since incorporated nearly every innovation in electronic music into their creations. Progressing from the pulsing, trance-inducing Techno of Accelerator through the ambient constructions of Lifeforms to the twisted breakbeats of their more recent albums, FSOL have shown an omnivorous interest in sound and the different ways it can be combined. They bring a truly experimental attitude to what is often a convention-bound form, and their records are always an adventure, breaking fresh sonic ground and then moving on to the next challenge. The music is never difficult for its own sake; in fact, what makes FSOL so successful is the way they integrate their sonic investigations into a funky, listener-friendly format. Their releases are always accessible and danceable, allowing them to present new ideas more easily -- and pushing the whole scene forward as they do so.

The Orb is perhaps the best-known name in mainstream Ambient music, and for all the right reasons. Since the end of the 1980s, Alex Paterson and a changing list of collaborators have produced chilled-out, ecstatic grooves and fluffy, flowing remixes for dancers greeting the dawn. Their output is every bit as brilliant and stunning as the rising sun after a long night of physical flow and endless four/four pounding. Multicolored synth lines run like a watercolor palette in the rain. They layer blissful selections from Pink Floyd, Minnie Riperton, Ennio Morricone and Rickie Lee Jones to create a harmonious pastiche of original music, seamless samples and astute dialog. As the Orb's pulsating harmonies weave self-contained ecosystems of sound, delirious beats climb up the mix like vines, heavy with sweet fruit, ready for plucking.

Gracing their 1994 album 76:14 with a photograph of an ear that rendered the organ as something approximating a lunar landscape, Global Communication found the perfect image to encapsulate their sound. Taking inspiration from the cosmic synthesizer journeys of Vangelis and Klaus Schulze, they ventured ever inward, following the trajectory of ambient electronica's most contemplative strains. The duo of Tom Middleton and Mark Pritchard reserved other aliases—Jedi Knights, Link, Reload—for dance music proper, variously influenced by electro-funk and acid. But Global Communication all but did away with the beats, sticking to ethereal synthesizers and washes of field recordings. They weren't afraid to let the world in -- "Obselon Minos" follows the pulse of a ticking clock -- but as their time-coded track titles suggest, they were most interested in exploring a field of pure sonics where known reference points melt away.

Animating Detroit techno and electro-funk with the streamlined machinery of their native Sheffield, the Black Dog helped develop the style that would come to be known as intelligent dance music (IDM), along with Autechre and Aphex Twin. In its first incarnation, as Black Dog Productions, the group was comprised of Ken Downie, Ed Handley and Andy Turner. In the early '90s, they released several singles and LPs that challenged the coarsening U.K. rave scene with a more refined, even delicate approach. Temple of Transparent Balls and Parallel were heralded as instant classics (and for many years the out-of-print records fetched obscene prices at auction). In 1995, they joined the Warp label, recorded two albums and promptly split up, with Downie retaining control of the Black Dog name and Handley and Turner going on to found Plaid (also signed to Warp). Downie experimented with several lineups and took an extended hiatus before returning in 2005, now allied with Dust Science's Martin and Richard Dust; 2008 saw them reissuing a number of classic BDP albums via Glasgow's Soma label, as well as the Detroit Vs. Sheffield EP, featuring remixes from Robert Hood.

The U.K.'s Elliot Morgan-Jones and Nick Woolfson unite their sonic trance-inducing techniques under the moniker Sounds from the Ground. "Drawn to the Woman," a track from the 1996 Waveform Records release Kin features dreamy melodies swirling around downbeat rhythms like fog gathering over a cityscape on fast forward. Silky female spoken word vocal samples slink in and out of the celestial mix like expensive lingerie. Inspiring lyrics and delicate bouts of giggles waft up from a pool of earthy ambient bliss. Though best utilized as a soundtrack for the steamy scenes of yet another "9 1/2 Weeks," the digital, electric edge on these soft grooves maintain a chill-out appeal for intimate rooms.

Like many of his Detroit techno peers, John Beltran's work ranges between jazz, Latin music and sleek, soulful electronics. Beltran began producing in the early '90s, becoming labelmates with Carl Craig when his debut EP, Earth and Nightfall, was released on the 33rpm Records / Sinewave imprint; releases for Peacefrog and Apollo solidified his reputation as an unusually deep purveyor of ambient techno. The 1996 release Ten Days of Blue, with its shimmering arpeggios and fluid grace, remains an under-appreciated high point for Detroit techno's most melodic phase. Moving in the '00s to labels like Ubiquity and Exceptional, Beltran began delving deeper into soul, jazz and various Latin styles, but despite his ambitions, he never let go of his ability to make music sound unusually liquid, with congas bubbling up beneath waves of Rhodes, horns and voice.

The British trio TUU demonstrates the art of relaxation as misty ambient drones sculpt a humid space for tribal effects and organic beats with this 1996 Beyond Records/Waveform release All Our Ancestors. Flautist Rebecca Lublinski overlays lingering melodies atop Mykl O'Dempsey's warm synths while percussionist Martin Franklin maintains the foreground with the unusual textures offered by water drums, clay pots, Tibetan bells, and gongs. Placid soundscapes overpower your imagination with mystical images of revisiting an ancient world in an exotic locale.

Berlin's Sun Electric were among the earliest groups to adapt ambient music to a rave context, and while they never achieved the acclaim of some of their peers, they did as much as anyone to move the music beyond chill-out cliches, crafting intricately detailed, jewel-toned music that folds machine rhythms into kaleidoscopic patterns. The duo of Max Loderbauer and Tom Thiel released their first EP, O'Locco, in 1990 on Belgium's R&S; oddly, their next releases were on Trevor Horn and Paul Morley's ZTT. But it was their successive releases on R&S and its sublabel Apollo that cemented their reputation as restless ambient explorers; they even managed what few electronic acts ever have: a compelling live album (recorded in mono, no less, due to a technical glitch on stage). Long out of print, their music began to trickle back into circulation with Lost & Found (1998-2000), a 2007 collection of unreleased material, and the revival of R&S, which reissued 1996's masterful, jazz-flecked Present. Loderbauer also plays in Chica and the Folder as well as NSI, while Thiel pursued a solo career as Bus, but they reunited for a handful of live shows in 2008.

A long-standing fixture on the Japanese electronic music scene, Yokota-san makes music that virtually oozes emotion. Following the logical path of development from '70s electronic pioneers like YMO through early Detroit Techno and classic Acid House, Yokota has thoroughly absorbed the idea that simply to groove is not enough. Each of his tracks, whether it's an ambient tone poem or a slinky late night Deep House gem, is a window into his unique world of sound, suffused in melody, personality and musical character.

These Intelligent Techno pioneers infused the austere Detroit Techno sound with complexity and head-spinning playfulness. Hard Electro and Techno beats are agitated into the complexity of footfalls on a playground blacktop during recess. While the hopscotch rhythms generate complexity, they create lush grooves that constantly evolve. Dreamy synths establish a sometimes eerie, sometimes blissful haze of electronic textures as gentle melodies timidly peer into the mix, too sweet and shy to control the track, but warm enough to balance the forceful beats.

Scala formed in '96 with past members of the hazy Ambient Dub outfit Seefeel, and the darker, experimental electronic leanings of one-man show, Locust. Scala put a stronger focus on song structure than either of the previous bands and included the spaced out vocals of Mary Peacock. Mark Van Hoen, aka Locust would provide the loud, grinding noise with which the ex-Seefeel members could lay down their spiralling soundscapes. Each release seems to have gotten darker and edgier, gradually drowning out the vocals with scratchy, jagged guitar loops. The entire package is one that contains a twitchy, spastic energy while being relentlessly beautiful.

Dallas born Jeff McIlwain studied 20th century electronic music and sound design for music and film at LA's Cal Arts school, and began making his own music thereafter. His first single was issued as L'usine with Shad Scott, but from then on he typically spelt his production name Lusine, particularly when he started his long relationship with Ghostly International. It will come as no surprise to followers of that label that McIlwain's style leans towards the ambient and experimental end of the techno world - sometimes approachable and melodic, others industrial and challenging. Fans need not worry if a particular release seems too difficult to enjoy, since McIlwain works at a steady and reliable rate, releasing at least one full-length album every year since his self-titled debut in 1999. Many of these works are released by labels other than Ghostly, from which he strays when looking to reach different audiences, but Ghostly's international renown is such that the bulk of his material can be found on their catalogue. McIlwain regularly plays live, using a laptop with Ableton and an external midi controller - a far cry from his early days of bringing his entire studio on tour. His future plans include producing other artists, and making use of his Cal Arts education to score films.

Jochem Paap, one of Techno's most brilliant luminaries, was an integral part of the early 1990s evolution into headphone, mind-warping Techno. His sounds were central to the birth of Intelligent (IDM); he created tracks that were too elaborate and heady for the visceral movements of the dancefloor. From Rotterdam, he was also one of the first DJ/programmers to bring the Detroit and Chicago sounds to Germany and Holland. His tracks create cold urban environments that echo Detroit's futurist projections. He also produces entrancing, luminous, synthetic textures, often eschewing the hard, dropping break for beat evolution and rushing rivers of atmosphere. In recent years, his beats have become crisper and more distorted with a tense, midnight paranoia despite his ever-present florescent glow.

Kirk Degiorgio is a man obsessed with soulful music, from the 1970s electric Fusion experiments of Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis and the Motor City soul of early Detroit Techno to the newest developments in hip-hop and R&B. His teenage record-collecting habit kicked into overdrive in the late '80s when he was bit by the Acid House bug, a period that culminated with pilgrimages to Detroit and Chicago, as well as the formation of his highly influential A.R.T. label. The early '90s saw A.R.T. releasing classic records by B-12, the Black Dog, Carl Craig and Degiorgio's best known alias, As One. Throughout the decade, Degiorgio put out a string of immaculately conceived EPs and LPs under that name on labels such as New Electronica, Shield, Clear and Mo Wax. House, Techno, jazz, Breakbeat and Electro are part of his palette, and his records frequently combine flavors of each style into a deep, soulful sound. Known worldwide as a true music fan, he is always in demand as a DJ, remixer and collaborator.

As a trained drummer and a mainstay of London's late 1980s Acid Jazz scene, Spacetime Continuum's Jonah Sharp has a familiarity with live jazz and soul that sets his music apart from most dance music. Galvanized by Acid House and an early '90s relocation to San Francisco, Sharp has been a constant unifying force in electronica, bringing together Techno, House, Experimental and Ambient with his music, his DJing and his label Reflective. A musical polyglot, Sharp's records take in nearly every subgenre of electronic music from Dub to Jungle, and are distinctive in the organic sounds and earthy structures he employs. Whether aimed at the dance floor or the chill-out room, Spacetime records are always funky and musical, always different and always a step ahead.

The 12-inches started slipping into circulation in '93. Housed in stark white sleeves, their labels were speckled with lo-res images of broken chromosomes and words like "Octagon," "Phylyps Trak" and "Inversion." Few bought 'em. And those who did had no idea who was behind such an incredible fusion of techno, dub and fuzzy decay: What is this Basic Channel? And where does it come from? Of course, the intervening years have solved one of techno's great mysteries -- but they haven't tempered the music's allure. Like Iggy & the Stooges, the German production duo of Mark Ernestus and Moritz Von Oswald (aka Maurizio) is far more revered now than in the mid '90s. Although Basic Channel only released about nine sides in two years, they essentially established minimal techno as a genre. At the same time, virtually none of their followers have ever matched Von Oswald and Ernestus' conceptual force and rhythmic intensity. Basic Channel really sound like nothing else, and that's fine by them. The Berlin-based producers are notoriously guarded about their music-making processes. After retiring the B.C. moniker in 1995, the duo continued to produce mind-blowing jams as Rhythm & Sound.

Bay Area-based violinist Kenji Williams drops his intense aural constructs upon open-minded electronic audiences under the guise of AbA Structure. Tuned to the spiritually centered frequencies familiar to fans of the Orb, Freaky Chakra and Banco de Gaia, this vibrant genre-hopping act channels an eclectic musical background into various contemporary electronic styles. Meditative melodic drones and dubby basslines bob lazily over easy beats and breaks while hypnotic synth washes paint the spacious backdrop in shiny hues. Lush arrangements fashioned from Trance, Techno, Trip-Hop and House beats appear shrouded in soul-stirring Ambient textures and malleable acidlines.

The lead vocalist of Electric Skychurch, Roxanne Morgenstern, has said that she bypasses the use of traditional song lyrics in order for the music to transcend words. The band's most famous gigs have been full-moon raves in the California desert, where their hypnotic ambient techno music induces trance-like experiences in hundreds of people. That said, some of their music sounds rather like '80s synth pop. It's a fun trip nonetheless.

Swedish event producer Lars-Marcus Jungnell synthesizes the "antidote to Ibiza," recapturing the kind of awe-inspiring, heady intensity that made the Ambient experience such an essential part of the neo-psychedelic '90s. His efforts evoke worthy comparison to the paragons of electronic mind music, echoing both the wobbly jams of Higher Intelligence Agency and the palatial soundworlds of the Orb. Adolescent hyperbole comes easily: exhilarating, peppermint cloudshapes blast out from every corner of the sky, refracting coronas of starlight into unknown colors, warming near the surface to zephyrs that kiss the opulent domes of an alien Xanadu.

Palm Pictures' Naked Funk showcase a deft ability to crisscross electronic music genre lines with these infectious beat-oriented tracks supervised by Howie B.'s expert mixing techniques. Layered with sublime slabs of Ambient textures, these grooves ride the shifting tides of emotion from big beats and roaring basslines, tempered with catchy digital melodics to soft tinny percussion, laced with smooth jazzy effects borrowed from a tired roulette table in an aging casino. Jeremy Shaw, one-half of Naked Funk, also appears alongside Howie B. on their collaborative project Daddylonglegs. Together, Jeremy Shaw and Jony Lipsey provided the former-Skylab-member-turned-producer-extraordinaire Howie B. with their programming and keyboard mastery on the albums Music for Babies and Turn the Dark Off, as well as a number of remixes. Likely to have listeners alternating between swaying hips and nodding heads, these knob-twiddlers share their headphone-enhancing brand of funky down-tempo innovation on the 1999 release Evolution Ending.

A veteran of the German underground since the late '70s, Thomas Fehlmann has played a key role in post-punk, techno and experimental ambient music. The Swiss-born musician first achieved acclaim as a member of the Neue Deutsche Welle band Palais Schaumburg; in 1988 he founded the label Teutonic Beats, creating a platform for emerging techno talents like Jorg Burger, Wolfgang Voigt and Westbam. In the early '90s he helped cement links between Berlin and Detroit via his project 3MB, with Juan Atkins and Basic Channel's Moritz von Oswald, and as the decade progressed his lush, aquatic fusions of dub, breakbeats and synthesizer music helped keep ambient music from fading into the wallpaper. An occasional partner of the Orb's Alex Paterson, Fehlmann is also a member of the Kompakt label's extended family and is a cofounder, alongside his frequent collaborator Gudrun Gut, of the Ocean Club, a weekly radio show.

Jhno has you cataloging your life's emotional highs and lows with these introspective listening tracks off the 1998 release KWNO on L.A.-based Indie label World Domination recordings. A complex, amorphous blend of tribal percussion and world melodies mixed with '90s innovation, body-swaying Trip-Hop rhythms gently propel Ambient textures shifting from morose to serene as they wrap around your ears like smoke from a hookah. Skilled at the art of abstract aural stimulation, Jhno entices you with a travelogue through exotic destinations of this world and just beyond as you lay entranced on your sofa.
