He was not the first to explore the spaces between digital sounds, the moments of error in desktop audio or worship at the shrine of the glitch, but Markus Popp and his collaborators have become the most well known orchestrators of the skipping compact disc and broken loop sample. Beyond the tape experiments of Muzique Concrete pioneers like Pierre Henry and Pierre Schaeffer, Oval brings phenomenological sound experiments to the digital realm. They have a very cohesive and immediately recognizable sound; one that creates a polarity between lush, tonal samples and minimal, raw digital distortion. Loops of sound never seem to line-up, always just slightly off center, like camera shutters clicking for out-of-focus snapshots of sound. While Oval is immersed in envelop-pushing audio technology (which they have recently made available to the public on cd-rom) and French philosophy (interviews with Markus Popp usually require at least a functioning understanding of the writings of Michel Foucault and Gilles Deleuze), their tracks exist in a hazy, impalpable dreamspace - vague, ephemeral shadows of sound cast by the fleeting light of a strobe.

London's Matthew Herbert is an anomaly in electronic music: while he got his start crafting Chicago-inspired house tracks for the more discerning ravers of the '90s, the bulk of his career has been defined by his conceptual bent and political activism. Herbert's music was always unconventional, but his move away from the dance-floor status quo came with his Personal Contract for the Composition of Music, a manifesto dictating the hows and whys behind his use of samplers and synthesizers. At heart an ethical approach in defiance of the increasing ease of electronic-music production, the P.C.C.O.M. led Herbert in a more activist direction as he began to move from the sounds of the personal (a beating heart or clattering toothbrush) to the political (an oil tank being filled, or a Big Mac thrown against a wall). Still, deep house and downtempo fans won't be thrown off by the intimacy of albums like Around the House or Bodily Functions. In addition to the side projects Doctor Rockit and Radioboy, Herbert also conducts the Herbert Big Band Orchestra, a modern-day take on the classic big bands of the '30s and '40s.

The Berlin-based, Swedish-born Axel Willner makes a virtue of simplicity on his shimmering techno epics. Grounded in the constant pulse and flickering repetitions of Kompakt, the Cologne minimal techno label he calls home, Willner's music turns to pop to give it extra body, heft and color. He first came to attention for "Over the Ice," a 2006 single that spun a snippet of Kate Bush into a churn of pulsing synths and determined drums, and its B-side, "A Paw in My Face," which did the same with an even unlikelier source: Lionel Richie's "Hello." In 2007, he released From Here We Go Sublime, a full album of gossamer yearning that easily lived up to its title. Expanding to a full-band lineup complete with bass and drums for the resulting tour, he returned in 2009 with Yesterday and Today. The album boasts a fuller sound, bristling with bells and hard-to-place samples. (Not all of them: the Cocteau Twins' "Lorelei" figures prominently in "The More That I Do," and "Everybody's Got to Learn Sometime" incorporates Korgis samples in the cover version.) The sublime never felt quite so within reach.

Since 1999, Texas-born techno producer Matthew Dear has been producing cutting edge Detroit-style minimal techno and electro-pop under various monikers, including Audion, False and Jabberjaw. As a key artist on Ghostly International, Dear has had a successful avenue for putting out multiple releases, including 2003's "Dog Days" (a Richie Hawtin favorite) and, as Audion, 2006's "Mouth to Mouth". In 2007, he released the critically acclaimed Asa Breed under his own name, marking a move into expanded songwriting and softer, more contemplative sonics.

When he began making beautiful music in his bedroom, James Chapman was a
teenager in Northamptonshire, England, crafting dreamy, atmospheric electro-pop under the name Short Break Operator and recording it straight to his four-track -- without the help of a computer. After some increasingly popular gigs around town, an upgrade to a 16-track and a few critically acclaimed EPs (including Start Something, which he sold out of), Chapman had changed his one-man band's name to Maps and had become the subject of some serious buzz among fans and industry types alike, most of whom were calling Maps the next My Bloody Valentine and hotly anticipating Maps' debut. We Can Create, the resulting full-length, took Chapman about four years of locking himself in said bedroom, but playing the hermit ultimately paid off: Mute Records released the album in 2007 to the tune of critical cheers in the U.K. and U.S., and Chapman, now with a proper band in tow (but still sans laptop), headed out on tour.

Dallas born Jeff McIlwain studied 20th century electronic music and sound design for music and film at LA's Cal Arts school, and began making his own music thereafter. His first single was issued as L'usine with Shad Scott, but from then on he typically spelt his production name Lusine, particularly when he started his long relationship with Ghostly International. It will come as no surprise to followers of that label that McIlwain's style leans towards the ambient and experimental end of the techno world - sometimes approachable and melodic, others industrial and challenging. Fans need not worry if a particular release seems too difficult to enjoy, since McIlwain works at a steady and reliable rate, releasing at least one full-length album every year since his self-titled debut in 1999. Many of these works are released by labels other than Ghostly, from which he strays when looking to reach different audiences, but Ghostly's international renown is such that the bulk of his material can be found on their catalogue. McIlwain regularly plays live, using a laptop with Ableton and an external midi controller - a far cry from his early days of bringing his entire studio on tour. His future plans include producing other artists, and making use of his Cal Arts education to score films.

Patenbrigade: Wolff is the brainchild of German techno musicians Sven Wolff and Lance Murdock. The duo's fascination with heavy machinery, construction sites and tower crane conductors is an inspiration for their electronic soundscapes and industrial drum rhythms. They even dedicate their music to all the tower crane operators of the world, a profession they admire from their years working as construction workers in Berlin. Patenbrigade: Wolff mix ambient electronica and hard-edged sounds influenced by techno wizards like Kraftwerk, Future Sound of London, Depeche Mode and Tangerine Dream. Their use of industrial percussion can be traced to the music of '80s club icons like Front 242, but their sound can also veer into dub and deep house territory on songs like "“Flutlicht”" and “"Entladung”" off 12.1.21.20.

Putting a finger on exactly what kind of music Ghislain Poirier makes is difficult. He operates at the fringes of electronic music, defying the canard of genre categorization. He produces music that fits nowhere, yet taps into the same post-millennial Zeitgeist mined by such artist as Prefuse 73, DJ/rupture, Diplo and a host of other universally-minded, aesthetic dabblers. But even in a field of giants, the tireless Montreal producer is considered restless and slippery. Poirier's first stop on the musical Ferris wheel was the minimal techno and ambient textures of his 2001 debut, Il N'y a Pas de Sud. One may be tempted to label the music on that album progressive or futuristic, but there's something very primal at play, with change occurring at the fringes, masked and anonymous, and oftentimes seemingly the byproduct of chance and corrosion.

For his next set of releases -- a series of remixes and comp appearances capped off by 2002's Sous le Manguier -- Poirier began to open up his sound a bit more. The influence of hip-hop producers such as Public Enemy's infamous production group the Bomb Squad and Gangstarr beatsmith DJ Premier -- both of whom intermingled dissonance and rhythm -- was becoming more evident in Poirier's work. But there was also a globally-minded aesthetic at play that would become even more evident with subsequent releases such as 2003 albums Conflict and Beats as Politics. Hints of island music such as ragga and dancehall were sharing space with German techno, Brazilian favela funk and British 2-step. Poirier was drifting further away from the minimal glitch of Autechre and closer to the kitchen sink approach shared by critical darling DJ/rupture. Vocals were also becoming more prominent; indie emcee Diverse appeared on Politics.

Meanwhile, Poirier was, at long last, beginning to get the recognition that his music deserved. He opened for it-girl Lady Sovereign on her first North American tour and did remix work for Sovereign, French rap outfit TTC and Pulseprogramming. His next album, 2005's Breakupdown, further explored the idea of a vocal presence and featured guest spots by Anti Pop Consortium poo-bah Beans as well as Lotek Hi-Fi, Omnikron and Seba. It also featured an expanded sonic palate, incorporating Baltimore club music and U.K. grime. And while Poirier may have switched up styles, his minimalist approach remained largely unchanged, as did his distinction as one of today's most interesting and mercurial producers.

Hailing from Finland, Luomo fuses experimental romance with dark, shadowy edges to create a restless mix of electronic soundscapes that skip eerily over modern dance beats. Mixing elements of disco, house, glitch-pop and minimal techno, Luomo's background as a jazz drummer brings a smooth, syncopated vibe to electronic's usually repetitive drum lines. His forward-thinking take on minimal house has led to studio collaborations with Massive Attack, DFA and the Scissor Sisters. With fractured rhythms and abstract lyrics in songs like "Tessio" off 2000's Vocalcity EP and "If I Can't" from 2008's Convivial, Luomo's sound began to be referred to as "microhouse."

William Basinski started working away at his singular sound in 1978, but it was nearly a quarter of a century before the world began to notice. Trained as a jazz saxophonist, he turned toward tape composition in the late '70s, applying lessons learned from Steve Reich and Terry Riley to a series of ambient sketches pieced together using reel-to-reel technology. His 1983 composition Shortwave Music, a collage made from snippets of shortwave radio broadcasts, marked his debut release in 1998, when Carsten Nicolai picked it up for his Raster-Noton label. Basinski's breakout moment came with the first volume of The Disintegration Loops, an exhumation of reel-to-reel archives in which the crumbling magnetic tape became an integral part of the project's corroded, dissipating sound world. His recordings, prolific since then, don't vary much: you can expect plangent acoustic samples stretched to the point of disintegration; his "melodies" are but a blurry wash of mantra-like loops. But this is no aural wallpaper. His music has the melancholic feel of grave rubbings, with traces of the distant past lingering in the very ink and cloth.

The 12-inches started slipping into circulation in '93. Housed in stark white sleeves, their labels were speckled with lo-res images of broken chromosomes and words like "Octagon," "Phylyps Trak" and "Inversion." Few bought 'em. And those who did had no idea who was behind such an incredible fusion of techno, dub and fuzzy decay: What is this Basic Channel? And where does it come from? Of course, the intervening years have solved one of techno's great mysteries -- but they haven't tempered the music's allure. Like Iggy & the Stooges, the German production duo of Mark Ernestus and Moritz Von Oswald (aka Maurizio) is far more revered now than in the mid '90s. Although Basic Channel only released about nine sides in two years, they essentially established minimal techno as a genre. At the same time, virtually none of their followers have ever matched Von Oswald and Ernestus' conceptual force and rhythmic intensity. Basic Channel really sound like nothing else, and that's fine by them. The Berlin-based producers are notoriously guarded about their music-making processes. After retiring the B.C. moniker in 1995, the duo continued to produce mind-blowing jams as Rhythm & Sound.

With their deep, dubbed-out tech House sound, Swayzak send late night heads spinning into territories ruled by such acts as Faze Action and Deep Dish. Future-forward melodic loops disappear into blank spaces, fading into nothingness like astronauts cut loose from a shuttle. Weary beats step quietly through airless atmospheres full of glowing synths and depthless basslines. Bittersweet excursions inside your consciousness, the sounds of this London-based duo (composed of James Taylor and David Brown) are technoid lullabies for House types.

Germany's Pole (aka Stefan Betke) is in love with the sounds between the beats: he focuses on the intricate structures and minute fragments of stretched-out beats and fractured textures, making heavy use of filters, echoes and the gentle crackling hum of white noise. Pole's newer material is a bit more cohesive, though there's still plenty of room for your head and ears to wander. From his beginnings in Basic Channel's reduced minimal techno, he has gradually warped his sound to include elements of hip-hop, Krautrock and dubstep.

You need only look to Loco Dice for a quintessential expression of contemporary electronic music's nomadic spirit. Raised in Dusseldorf, Germany, from Tunisian roots, the DJ and producer came up as a hip-hop DJ until crossing over to the world of house, techno and minimal with the beginning of his residency at Ibiza's infamous DC-10. The same year, he and Martin Buttrich began a fruitful studio collaboration that would lead to a string of underground hits for labels like Minus, Cadenza, Ovum, Four:Twenty and Cocoon. Loco Dice -- born Yassine Ben Achour -- relocated to New York to record his debut album, and the city's spirit makes itself amply felt in the music's blurring of voices, sounds and textures. While not overtly multicultural in content, the album suggests a kind of polyglot perspective that could only come from an artist with a wandering imagination.

Richie Hawtin's trajectory through outer-Detroit Techno history has brought him closer and closer to detail and subtlety in sound. From Windsor, Ontario, just across the water and border from Detroit, Richie Hawtin's output as Plastikman has always been an austere approach to an already dry, refined sound. Over time, Plastikman's minimalist dance tracks became a study in beat minutia; each track like a page from Gray's Anatomy of rhythm. His music is a sublime soundtrack for deep contemplation and ecstatic escape. While his music is architecturally spacious, it is like wandering in a dark, empty warehouse that feels claustrophobic as your footfalls create slow slap-back and time and space lose reference. His muted beats and distant drones approach the level of self-contained musical tautologies that repeat and reinstate simple phrases with only minor, almost imperceptible changes. This space is far from the 4/4 bombast, but it is still organic and resonant. You can still feel it in your body.

Turkey's Onur Ozer is a prime example of the unusual cultural ties linking his home country and Germany. While based in Istanbul, he records for Berlin's Vakant label and is most often found on stages across Germany and Western Europe. Ozer's musical style is fittingly internationalist: At the core of his sound are the dynamic rhythmic sensibility and otherworldly sonics of 21st century minimal house and techno, whose adherents are spread across Europe and the Americas. Indeed, his single biggest influence is probably the psychedelic minimalism of Chile's Ricardo Villalobos, but where Villalobos so often looks to traditional Chilean music for inspiration, Ozer draws upon Turkish folk music, lacing his long, shape-shifting tracks with horns, reeds and exotic (to Western ears, anyway) percussion. Flowing as though borne along strange trade-winds, Ozer's music offers the best kind of globalization.

While he's not a household name, Cologne's Wolfgang Voigt is one of German electronic dance music's undisputed behind-the-scenes kings. This wizard's curtains are woven of aliases: he has used dozens since he began recording in the early '90s, among them Gas, Auftrieb, M:I:5, Mike Ink, Studio 1, Popacid and Wasserman. But Voigt is best known as the figurehead behind Cologne's long-running Kompakt organization, a vertically integrated techno institution comprised of a retail shop, distributor, booking agency and a family of labels including Kompakt, Profan and several other offshoots. Voigt's sound varies by project: Studio 1 redefined minimalist dub techno, while Love Inc. imported acid house to German soil. Voigt's most celebrated project, Gas, updates the German classical canon for the ambient era. Inspired by youthful woodland walks, his Gas material smears orchestral strings into dense thickets of buzzing, beatless sound, mottled with details as ephemeral as the sunlight on a turning leaf.

Extrawelt are Arne Schaffhausen and Wayan Raabe, two musicians responsible for infusing minimal techno with a healthy dose of classic trance music. Originally known as Midi Miliz, the two began their recording careers with a series of trippy, technologic tracks for cyber-trance labels like Boshke Beats, but it was Extrawelt's 2005 single "Soopertrack," for James Holden's Border Community label, that granted them passage into Europe's electro-house and minimal-techno scenes. As demonstrated on a string of underground hits for Traum, Cocoon and Kompass Musik, Extrawelt specialize in fat, gripping anthems that combine minimal techno's precision percussion with the grandiose gestures of trance.

"If you're sick of the sounds you've got, you go and find more," says So Percussion's Adam Sliwinski, and it's evident from the ensemble's music that they follow that creed. Rooted in the work of contemporary composers like Steve Reich, the quartet restlessly pursues that uncommon place where the classical tradition overlaps with the sonic investigations of the 20th and 21st centuries; Aphex Twin and Radiohead are as much a part of their musical vocabulary as are Reich or Erik Satie. The New York quartet released its self-titled debut in 2004; a wash of marimbas and bells, it belied the dry regularity suggested by their name. They next tackled Steve Reich's "Drumming," breaking with convention by overdubbing parts, to kaleidoscopic effect. In 2006, Amid the Noise found the group venturing into less immediately percussive territory with an album full of chiming harmonies as softly volatile as a field full of dandelion tufts.

Simon Begg creates a perfect bridge between the libido-driven grooves of MoWax/Ninja Tune Downtempo and heady Intelligent dance music. He drops the phattest breaks in awkward rhythms and creates a tension between four-on-the-floor rocking beats and confounding beat-box angularity. Every break is full of surprises as beautiful samples drop into the mix unexpectedly and break from the traditions of unimpeded breakbeat flow. But Si Begg tracks are deeply rooted in the traditions of raw dance beats that will shake a party at its core.
