In the attention-getting style of Ninja Tune labelmates Funki Porcini and the Herbaliser, Amon Tobin mixes chunky beats in bass-driven atmospheres thickened with melodic elements of Ambient, Funk and Dub. Injecting gelatinous doses of blues and jazz effects into gloomy, hip-hop-oriented Drum 'n' Bass and Trip-Hop concoctions, this Brazil native, based in Brighton, brings a clouded world traveler's vision to your speakers. Encasing bitter grooves in Hitchcock-style cinematic synths, Tobin's textured atmospheres buff out gritty breakbeats like fog over rusted remains of a shipwreck. Hearty head-bobbing grooves brewed steadily for late night socializing.

Tom Jenkinson's alter ego, Squarepusher, aims straight for the techno jugular. Experiments in electronic glitch and manic sound collage dominate, with nods to noise, neo-jazz and drum 'n' bass. Jenkinson grew up with the sounds of jazz greats Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and Art Blakey playing around the house. The son of a jazz drummer, Jenkinson is a skilled bassist and multi-instrumentalist whose experimental listening music was first discounted by some who felt his music was a perversion of jungle and drum 'n' bass. However, after releasing a debut album through Richard D. James' Rephlex label, Squarepusher found an audience among post-acid house fans. In 1995, Squarepusher joined Warp Records, where he's remained ever since, continuing to confound and delight with every record. A trickster he may be, but he's serious about his restless quest for re-invention.

This youthful knob-twiddler/tabla player has already played with heavyweights across the musical spectrum. He's appeared on albums by artists as diverse as DJ Spooky and Herbie Hancock, and most famously he's a member of the electro-Indian supergroup Tabla Beat Science, with Trilok Gurtu, Zakir Hussein, Bill Laswell and Ethiopian singer Gigi. Kale's solo work is no less interesting, mingling live instrumentation and vocals from artists like the great classical singer Sultan Khan with expansive electronica and drum 'n' bass.

Turkish saxophonist Ilhan Ersahin leads this innovative, variably sized ensemble through a variety of musical terrains, focusing on jazzy Trip-Hop and full-throttle live Drum 'n' Bass. He's got quite a roster of players, including rising stars such as drummer Kenny Wolleson and established veterans such as trumpeter Eddie Henderson. This diversity is characteristic of Wax Poetic: the songs combine Wolleson's avant New York jazz and Henderson's early Funk/Fusion with Herbie Hancock with hints of everyone from Kruder & Dorfmeister to Wu Tang's RZA. But the group has many other important facets, including Lisa Rudolph's stunning vocal work and slick DJ fills. The group can swell to sixteen constantly changing members, and their sound benefits from the mass of multicultural creative energy.

Ninja Tune favorite Funki Porcini serves up jagged breakbeats encrusted with phenomenal aural atmospherics. Downplaying a cheeky sense of humor, this Londoner translates aural anecdotes from extensive world travels into delectable Downtempo goodness. Influenced by hip-hop, blues, Soul, Funk and beat poetry, Funki Porcini composes abstract tapestries that recall the past and foretell the future, like a finger-paint project from an old soul trapped in the body of a five-year-old child prodigy. From jazz-infected Trip-Hop complexity to manic Drum 'n' Bass abstraction, these Funk-fueled vibes make for pleasing wallpaper during an after-dinner ritual of espresso and a cigarette, or mood-matching sonic accompaniment to a good-natured temper tantrum.

Self-described as "MIDI warriors," the Asian Dub Foundation have come a long way from their roots as teachers and students in a music technology workshop for Asian children. However, unlike many initially socially strident groups who finally achieve global stardom, the ADF's political viewpoints have remained steadfast throughout. From the outset, their blend of punk, jungle and Bengali instrumentation proved more popular in France then their native London, but as word spread about their incendiary live performances, people began to take notice. Wishing to capitalize on this momentum, the ADF made the smart move of re-recording their France-only release R.A.F.I. to reflect this live energy, resulting in 1998's Rafi's Revenge, which proved to be their breakthrough album. Headlining tours followed, helped by regular championing from Primal Scream and a pivotal US support tour with the Beastie Boys. Line-ups have ebbed and flowed, but the political message has remained the same – for example "Fortress Europe" on 2003's Enemy of the Enemy clearly indicates their views on immigration. The inevitable best-of was released in 2007 (Timefreeze 1995-2007), but the ADF show no signs of slowing down. Expect another retrospective 10 years in the future.

The legendary importance of Grooverider in the creation of Drum 'n' Bass is inestimable. Beginning with partner Fabio as an Acid House DJ in the late 1980s, it was at their London club Rage that the mythology surrounding their work was first constructed. Playing a mix of House, rave Techno and Hardcore, the duo were at ground zero as breakbeats infiltrated raves and the scene fractured into Techno, Jungle and modern House. Masters of the London underground, Groove and Fabio had the capability to establish an artist by merely playing them, and it was this support that gave a critical boost to producers such as Goldie, Photek and Ed Rush. As styles further diverged, Grooverider pushed on into ever darker and harder areas, coining the term Hardstep to describe the rougher sounds he was playing; with his Prototype label (begun in 1994), he was instrumental in the development of the even harsher sounds of Techstep. Throughout the '90s, Groove was at the heart of the music, releasing influential tracks as Codename John and building the reputations of Matrix and Boymerang with releases on Prototype. In 1997, he consolidated his activities with a compilation on Prototype and followed a year later with his debut artist album Mysteries of Funk, which broadened his sonic palette to include a range of soulful flavors along with his trademark Techstep.

The joint venture of Dego MacFarlane and Mark Mac since the mid-'80s, 4 Hero have always been on the forward frontier of dance music. They established their career with meticulously crafted breaks that can slice through an all-night flight like a samurai sword, and they can soften the blow with gentle beats that guide you on your way to a peaceful comedown. Their perfect fusion of hip-hop, jazz, techno and electro lets all the disparate sounds fall comfortably into the mix. With their label, Reinforced, 4 Hero have become one of the most known and respected names in Jungle through the '90s. And well they should. Their jungle output is a tiring lap-swim through treacherous waves of samples and loops crashing into each other, destabilizing the center with ill effect. 4 Hero continue to create music that propels bodies through space, and genres through time.

England's Photek, aka Rupert Parkes, was instrumental in the evolution of jungle into drum 'n' bass; his albums Modus Operandi and Form and Function are landmark works in the genre, sounding as driven -- and as strange -- today as when they were released in the late '90s. While sometimes tagged with the unfortunate term "intelligent" d 'n' b, Photek's real contribution was a new degree of rhythmic precision, with beats slicing like scissor-handed ninjas. His dry, blasted textures also helped give rise to the subgenre known as "tech-step." By '00s standards, Photek's beats might seem slow, and indeed, they eased off the frenetic pace of early ragga-jungle, highlighting the space around his distorted breaks and ethnic drums. (Dubstep traces its roots, in large part, straight back to Photek's clanging tympani and tabla.) By 2000, Photek largely left jungle behind with Solaris, a surprisingly adept foray into experimental breaks and Detroit-influenced deep house that featured Chicago legend Robert Owens on two tracks. Parkes went on to move to Los Angeles, where he composes music for film and television.

Sometimes the best projects evolve out of romances, and in Sidestepper's case it was love at first sight. Englishman Richard Blair was working as a recording engineer at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios when he heard the singer Toto La Momposina for the first time. Floored by her Afro-Colombian sound, he hotfooted it to Colombia as soon as the recording was done, and thus began his love affair with Colombian music. After finding work as a sound engineer, Blair formed a group with other Colombians, mingling Costenos (coastal Colombians) and Bogota natives, a mix that was unheard of at the time. Sidestepper were born. The group helped make Afro-Colombian music hip in Colombia -- and in clubs around the world -- by mixing it with hip-hop and electronica. In 2003, 3 AM (In Beats We Trust) launched two great singles, "Deja" and "Mas Papaya," and made the group a club chill-room favorite. After a long hiatus, Sidestepper returned with The Buena Vibra Sound System in 2008.

If any individual was responsible for breaking Drum 'n' Bass into the mainstream, it was Goldie. He composes complex orchestrations of diva vocals, string sections, earth-shaking low-end, and always, his fierce, alarming breaks. Even in his down-tempo, melodic tunes, his breaks cut through the Jungle-lite of artists like L.T.J. Bukem without the belligerence of artists like Ed Rush and Optical. Underneath the concrete shattering beats is dark and menacing, yet elegantly painted expressions of lyric romanticism and urban despair. His recordings come together as progressive epics that move through a narrative from one track to the next, though always maintain a tough stance, as Goldie is 100% B-boy.

A Guy Called Gerald's decade-long exploration into the break has rendered him a master of mixology. Precariously twisting beats around glimmering instrumental samples, he creates driving rhythms with a glossy veneer so radiant, you might not necessarily notice the complicated programming beneath. Born into the cultural desolation that was Manchester, England in the late '60/early '70s, Gerald Simpson did what any bored future knob-twiddler would do: rebuilt electronics for fun. A decade later Simpson co-wrote "Pacific State" with the hugely influential 808 State (an original member of the band, he wasn't credited for years) and ultimately struck out on his own, launched by the club hit "Voodoo Ray." He was picked up by Sony for the next few albums, though he ultimately left them after a disputed non-release. Never one for stylistic stagnation, Simpson's tried his hand at every techno and house permutation there is. His self-released album 28 Gun Bad-Boy is widely considered a key stepping stone in the evolution of drum 'n' bass.

A cutting edge dj and producer, State of Bengal (aka Sam Zaman) got his start teaching music to kids in London. After a few trips to his native Bengal to study folk traditions, Zaman started making his own music and mentoring older artists -- including his brother MC Deedar, who went on to found the Asian Dub Foundation. Zaman was also breathing new life into drum 'n' bass with his club appearances, where he mixed Indian and Bengal influences with technical trickery and appealed to a young, urbane generation of British Asians. He caught Talvin Singh's attention, and appeared on Singh's Anokha: Sounds of the Asian Underground compilation (named for the famed British club night). His 1999 debut Visual Audio garnered critical praise, and he came back a year later with Walking On, a collaboration with Ananda Shankar recorded just before Shankar's death. 2004's Tana Tani saw Zaman matching wits with Paris-based singer Paban Das Baul.

A true pioneer in the world of Drum 'n' Bass, LTJ Bukem cut his teeth as a DJ for rare groove sound systems before being energized by the rave scene and Acid House. Taking up the challenge of production, Bukem saw the revolutionary possibilities of combining his background in Soul and jazz Fusion with Techno, House and breakbeats. Eschewing the manic excess of the majority of early Jungle, Bukem's smooth and futuristic style owes as much to Lonnie Liston Smith and Weather Report as it does to E and Vicks Vapo-Rub. Creating a template based on sleek, rolling breaks and lush melodic synths, Bukem's groundbreaking tracks like "Music" and "Horizons" threw down the gauntlet of sophistication and musicality to the raving masses. While concentrating his efforts mostly on his Good Looking and Looking Good labels, Bukem has nonetheless kept up a steady stream of classy junglist releases, with the occasional foray into soulful down-tempo territory.

If you danced to Drum 'n' Bass in the mid-1990s, chances are you've boogied to the music of Aphrodite. He's one of the masterminds behind the infectious, party-oriented style known as Jump-Up, whose name stems from its aim: to make folks "jump up and hit the dance floor running." His style weaves perfectly-placed hip-hop and Ragga samples around various permutations of the classic "Amen" break, spiced up with deep, droning basslines which sound equally good at the club or booming out of your Jeep. Aphrodite often uses well-heeled, instantly recognizable samples in the service of dancefloor hits. His history of rehashes includes "Mission: Impossible," "Carmina Burana," and the O'Jays' "For the Love of Money." But his street cred's been restored by his work with well-respected hip-hop artists such as The Luniz and Jungle Brothers.

If you thought Jungle was just a bastard son of Techno, prepare to think again. Turntablists Ming & FS come straight out of the NY school of hip-hop Jungle, a far cry from Photek's abstract breakbeats or Trace's dark-and-nasty Techstep. The breakbeats are lightning-quick and hard hitting. The basslines, rather than rolling in like tsunamis, stomp right along with the beat, pulling the groove as tight as a drive belt. Itchy wah-wah guitar samples tick along, building the intensity. But when Ming & FS mix in Wu-Tang, they knock out the Jungle beat entirely for a chorus and a verse, only to knock it back in just as unexpectedly. The samples will remind you where this music comes from -- they're all taken from Dancehall reggae and Old School Rap. To smooth things out, Ming & FS remix the Fugees, sending a message loud and clear: Jungle ain't just for tweaked-out ravers.

The man behind the brilliant Jazz/Drum 'n' Bass programming of Cujo is Brazilian-born Amon Tobin, best known for his solo work released on Ninja Tune Records. While his Cujo work is a bit older (Adventures In Foam was released in 1996), it's clear Tobin's zest for classic jazz was already bubbling over. The Cujo stuff has arguably deeper roots in Drum 'n' Bass and Ambient Breakbeat than some of his newer material, but any fan of abstract beats, classic jazz (such as Miles Davis, Charles Mingus or Thelonious Monk), or downtempo music will love his use of old school samples of exotic orchestral instruments and complex, incredibly dense arrangements. Because Cujo/Tobin incorporates so many classic instruments into his music, there's always a scratchy undercurrent of snaps and crackles fritting about the mix.

One half of the duo Caspa and Rusko, London's Caspa is one of dubstep's heavy hitters, and for good reason. One of the inventors of the signature "wobble" sound -- a low-end upheaval that recalls liquefying earth under seismic tremor -- his tracks and DJ sets apply the energy and violence of jump-up drum 'n' bass to dubstep's darker, murkier sound. Caspa got his start as a U.K. garage DJ, inspired by the likes of DJ Zinc and Oris Jay, and soon found himself playing on Rinse FM. But it was his 2004 track "Rubber Chicken" that announced his arrival as a formidable producer, paving the way for the ultra-slow, crunked-up "half-step" style that would dominate clubs. Fond of titles like "Cockney Violin" and "Big Headed Slags," Caspa and his label Sub Soldiers evince a mean-spirited, almost misanthropic vibe, turning reggae's languid cadences into hard, metallic rave-ups laced with breakbeats made for moshing.

With her decidedly tough demeanor and expert production skills, DJ Rap is the crowned queen of Jungle. Born Charissa Savero in Singapore, Rap was raised in such diverse locales as Indonesia, Malta and Africa before settling in England. The youthful runaway-turned-raver spent all of the '90s perfecting an implosive Hardcore/Jungle fusion that proves she's anything but nice. A singer-songwriter at heart, Rap's lush, pop-hopeful Drum 'n' Bass style often layers choice bits of live instrumentation, blood-curdling breakbeats, graceful guitars and celestial ambience. Eloquent arrangements feature Rap's own vocal stylings, which sound like a cross between Madonna and Garbage's Shirley Manson. Her lyrical messages offer snippets of sermons preaching the tenets of "girl power" to the masses. Wickedly soft.

Soothing Jungle lullabies feature dreamy, smoky female vocals wrapped in expansive, PFM-style production. Tongue-in-cheek "Deep" House toss-offs give way to dreamy, Prog-House-influenced Big Beat grooves.

At the close of Napalm Death's most fertile period, when Mick Harris had taken blast beats to the threshhold of human speed, and could only go further by slowing them down to a zombie's pace, Scorn (originally featuring other Napalm Death defectors Justin Broadrick and Nick Bullen) arose to emit the sinister sound of jagged synth lines wrapped around broken glass hip-hop and Dub beats. The beats are so forboding, they hardly inspire the corporeal pleasure of dance despite their occasional break into Jungle abandon. The creeping electronic textures are so distressing, they are hardly chill room fare. Scorn's ominous output is, strangely, as fearful as Napalm Death's Cuisinart Splattercore.

For all the harsh, manic beats of Drum 'n' Bass, programmers like Rob Haigh, under the name Omni Trio, create music that doesn't compete with your desire for serenity. He renders floral patterns of beats that are as much Ambient as they are danceable. His warm basslines glow like the summer sun, cooled by gentle breezes of synth lines and samples that carry the pollen of jazz breaks. But his sound is not all organic; his use of angular rhythms and sparkling keyboards is an excursion through a futurist utopia -- a maze of synthetic Sensurround pleasures.
