Sure, Deadmau5 wears a big red mouse head during his live shows, but that's not the only reason that the Toronto native is one of dance music's most popular producers, especially among DJs. It's his musical style that's truly attention-grabbing: Drawing tricks from electro-house, progressive and minimal, he composes big, burly tunes that absolutely own dancefloors. With his music, what you hear is what you get -- chugging rhythms, emotive synths and gnarly bass lines are his stock in trade, and any element that doesn't raise the heart rate gets left on the cutting room floor. But there is another level to Deadmau5 music. As talented an engineer as he is a composer, every sound in his music jumps out of the speakers and lodges itself deep inside you, with precision and ferocity. His bass lines are designed to rock stadiums, but you can feel their power right at home.

Swedish DJ and producer Eric Prydz first burst onto the international club scene in 2004 with his chart-topper "Call on Me." The song, which sampled the Steve Winwood classic "Valerie," became a hit, topping the U.K. singles chart for six weeks. Before this success, Prydz was a drummer in the Swedish synth band, Enemy Alliance, a group that dreamt of becoming the next Kraftwerk. But after he began creating his own techno-funk tracks, he was eventually signed to the dance label Credence. Mixing elements of electro and minimal tech-house, Prydz creates peak-time floor fillers that are championed by some of the biggest DJs in the world. The prolific musician has also founded three successful dance labels.

Described by the now-defunct The Face magazine as "Scotland's answer to Royksopp," Mylo (aka Myles MacInnes) burst onto the British electronic music scene in 2004 with Destroy Rock And Roll. His sound, a refreshing blend of house and poppy electro with fat bass lines and clever samples, belied the fact that the album was mostly created at home on his computer. Such self-sufficiency also led to Myles eschewing the need for label representation and instead creating his own -- Breastfed -- with a couple of friends. Hugely popular, and making many a critic's top 10 albums of the year in 2004, his debut set MacInnes up on the international DJing and live performance circuit, with remixing work coming in from Sia, Annie and the Scissor Sisters. He also wisely chose to embrace the mash-up phenomenon by agreeing to release "Doctor Pressure" -- a blend of his "Drop the Pressure" hit and "Doctor Beat" by the Miami Sound Machine.

These forward-thinking stars of London's renowned club The End are fusionists in the truest sense of the term. Brought together by friend, colleague and fellow scene-creator Mr. C, Layo Paskin and Matthew B joined their talents in the mid-1990s to service crowds with an unequalled, inventive, boundary-dissolving sound, initially under the moniker the Usual Suspects. Deftly combining spine-tingling Techno effects, slick Electro stabs and lethal Drum 'n' Bass-inspired breaks with a somber yet danceable House feel depicted on their debut full-length Low Life, Layo & Bushwacka!'s cinematic grooves prove to be suited to both club and home speakers. Simultaneously dark and funky, these seamless tracks send your mind reeling through steamy summer nights as the moon moves out of view.

FC Kahuna began as a club, became a label and ended up as a band. Taking their name from Samuel L. Jackson's tasty fast-food treat in Pulp Fiction, childhood friends Dan Ormondroyd and Jon Nowell founded the Big Kahuna Burger in May 1995. Initially just a Heavenly Social-style night, it rapidly became the place to be, and legend has it that Norman Cook decided to launch his Fatboy Slim persona after a visit. After three years, the constantly shifting venues and general madness began to wear, so the boys decided to close down the Big Kahuna Burger, and launched "Headstart" at London's Turnmills. Seeking a new sound, they used Headstart as a launching pad for their love of classic acid house, quirky electronic cuts and retro-electro stylings. This experimental environment was pivotal to the next stage of their development - "It just totally focused us," said Dan. They were soon being called on to capture this sound in a series of remixes for Morel, Luck Slater and Felix Da Housecat. From there, the Kahuna Cuts label followed, and it was here that FC Kahuna began as recording entity, before releasing their debut album Machine Says Yes on City Rockers in 2003. The sound is resolutely updated acid house, but there is soul in amongst the silicon chips, and even blissed-out downtempo with Haylingâ.

Although his collaborative commercial projects with media favorite Sasha earned him the title of world-class DJ/producer, John Digweed proves he is strong enough to stand solo. Famed for organizing the crowd-pulling Bedrock events in the U.K. city of Hastings, this club culture institution weathers the ever-changing dance trends with staid grace. Digweed's musical adeptness at conquering a wide range of styles takes you on a subliminal journey back and forth across the Atlantic from New York to London, simultaneously reminiscing about dance music's past and imagining its future. The mesmerizing Progressive sound flows smoothly between House and Trance and will win over both the club-goer and the introverted listener.

Philadelphia doesn't quite rank alongside Detroit, New York or Chicago in the annals of American house and techno, but don't blame Josh Wink: since he and King Britt founded Ovum Recordings in 1994, the formerly dreadlocked dance master has turned out classic after outsized classic to belie his "second city" standing. He first hit ravers' radars with the worldwide underground hits "Don't Laugh" and "Higher State of Consciousness." The latter, with its nimble breakbeat and spookily time-stretched vocal, offered an irresistible fusion of hardcore and acid house, and its standing in the dance-music canon was confirmed with multiple reworks over the years, both by Wink and others. An in-demand DJ, Wink showed versatility behind the decks with mixes like the Profound Sounds series. In 2009, he returned in full force with the studio album When a Banana Was Just a Banana, a collection of muscular, state-of-the-art tech-house that balanced purposeful grooves with cheeky detailing.

With their deep, dubbed-out tech House sound, Swayzak send late night heads spinning into territories ruled by such acts as Faze Action and Deep Dish. Future-forward melodic loops disappear into blank spaces, fading into nothingness like astronauts cut loose from a shuttle. Weary beats step quietly through airless atmospheres full of glowing synths and depthless basslines. Bittersweet excursions inside your consciousness, the sounds of this London-based duo (composed of James Taylor and David Brown) are technoid lullabies for House types.

An Englishman is a rare enough sight in Los Angeles. Even more uncharacteristic is the figure of Damian Lazarus, a dapper Brit whose move to SoCal is helping shore up the city's underappreciated underground techno scene. The former music journalist and City Rockers A&R man is best known as a DJ, both for his numerous mix CDs and his incendiary, hedonistic club sessions. His preference for deep, dark, dirty house and techno -- always a bit wrong-sounding in just the right ways -- also provides the focus for his label, Crosstown Rebels, home to favorites of the minimal scene like Dinky, Pier Bucci and Jamie Jones. In 2009, he finally made the move to production, releasing an odd, ambitious album of house-infused electronic pop, Smoke the Monster Out, for Berlin's Get Physical Label.

Laurent Garnier has been around. He debuted at the start of the Acid House movement in 1987 at Manchester's Hacienda, and was the first European DJ to gain a residency. Thought by many to be France’s premier ambassador for house and techno, he was invited onto BBC Radio 1’s 'Peel Sessions' and has played headlining slots at all the major dance festivals. His first album, Shot In The Dark (1994), was well received by the dance community, but it was his second release,30 (1997), that really brought him to the public eye, winning the 'Victoire De La Musique' in 1998, and having a live performance of "Acid Eiffel" being broadcast from the award ceremony on prime time French TV. The 250,000 selling Unreasonable Behaviour (2000) followed, with the hit single 'The Man With The Red Face', leading to a global tour and a series of videos from hot young directors. His sound leans towards the harder more industrial side of house, but there are unexpected jazzy rhythms and deep funky beats that keep his audience guessing. "What I play is shakey shakey, wiggle your bottie", he says. What we hear is throbbing deep sensual beats, minimal techno, sweet strings and driving hardcore hands-in-the-air funk.

Justin Harris & Luke Solomon, the duo behind Freaks, describe their sound as part Kraftwerk, part Green Velvet, part George Clinton and just a dash of Basement Jaxx. Walking the line between quirky and commercial, the Freaks like to mess with traditional house formats, chopping up Latin riffs into mechanical loops, layering vocodered rodent sounds into sparse blip-hop-house beats and generally doing their best to bring a creative edge to what they see as a stale house sound. They have released three albums -- The Beat Diaries, Meanwhile Back At The Disco and The Man Who Lived Underground , along with other remixes and singles on their Music For Freaks label. From mellow electro grooves to down and dirty house, the Freaks' sound is brutal but funky-sexy, hard-hitting but minimalist.

Since 1999, Texas-born techno producer Matthew Dear has been producing cutting edge Detroit-style minimal techno and electro-pop under various monikers, including Audion, False and Jabberjaw. As a key artist on Ghostly International, Dear has had a successful avenue for putting out multiple releases, including 2003's "Dog Days" (a Richie Hawtin favorite) and, as Audion, 2006's "Mouth to Mouth". In 2007, he released the critically acclaimed Asa Breed under his own name, marking a move into expanded songwriting and softer, more contemplative sonics.

Philadelphia's Juliet Richardson started her musical career in 1 Plus 1 -- a pop outfit who had moderate success in the U.K. charts with a cover of the Runaway's "Cherry Bomb " in 2000. She then went on the front various rock bands before partnering with house production wunderkind Stuart Price (aka Jacques Lu Cont, Les Rhythmes Digitales, Thin White Duke, Zoot Woman, etc.) This lead to "Avalon" (2005) -- a hypnotic blissed-out club anthem that perfectly combined Stuart's Latin house rhythms with Juliet's torch song vocal style. Picked as an "Essential New Tune" on Pete Tong's U.K. Radio 1 show, it's dancefloor success lead to a number of live appearances with Stuart (in Jacques Lu Cont mode) and an album titled Random Order.

Later, Francis teamed up with Coles to form tech-house outfit Housey Doingz before releasing similar material as a solo artist.
One half of the duo Gabriel & Dresden, Josh Gabriel is one of progressive house music's heavy hitters, and a multitalented one at that. The duo routinely sweeps up International Dance Music Awards such as Best Producer, Best Global DJ and Best Dance Act, and its recordings tend to pepper both the Billboard dance charts and the top jocks' biggest mix CDs; the U.K.'s Toolroom Records tapped Gabriel & Dresden to compile and mix an installment of the imprint's popular Toolroom Knights series. Gabriel, who got his start making electronic music as a teenager, using Yamaha's DX-7 and primitive computers, has also been a member of the groups Andain and Motorcycle, and since 2001 he has released a string of successful singles. In 2008 he finally released his solo debut, Eight. Washed with the melancholic tones of '80s electro-pop and hardwired with the rhythms of peak-time techno, it's a perfect merger of split personalities.

Homegrown will renew your faith in progressive house. Like many producers, Steve Porter isn't afraid to bring in the big beats; he loves the massive breakdowns and knows the power of a washy filtered effect on a dancefloor. What separates him from the rest is an ear for melody. His tunes are euphoric and uplifting but never cheesy -- a rare achievement in house.
