Best known for the catchy "Days Go By" (thanks to its exposure in a Mitsubishi car commercial), Dirty Vegas construct radio-ready pop tunes with a strong House influence. Their self-titled debut spent several weeks on the Billboard dance charts, but by the end of 2002 it was clear their appeal crossed genres. Much like the Pet Shop Boys, Dirty Vegas can be filed in either the electronica section, or the alt rock portion of your CD collection. The 2004 release One only deepened the group's crossover appeal.

Schiller, the project of Grammy-nominated DJ/producer Christopher von Deylen, create soothing New Age dance music with a hint of trance and ambient elements. German electronic pioneer von Deylen named the group for the famous 18th-century German poet and philosopher Friedrich Schiller. In 1998, Schiller released the hugely popular "Glockenspiel," a straight-up trance song that featured the bell-like glockenspiel sampled over a bouncy dance beat. The international success of the song pushed them to create a full-length album, and the following year, they released Zeitgeist. The album featured more trance singles aimed directly at the club scene, but Schiller also began venturing into ambient, New Age and breakbeat genres on future albums like Voyage, Life and Prologue. Schiller's musical influences include Tangerine Dream, Jean-Michel Jarre and Kraftwerk, and they count artists such as Sarah Brightman, Sinead O'Connor and Mike Oldfield as fans. In late 2008, Schiller were nominated for four Grammy Awards, including Song of the Year for the chart-topping trance single "Tired of Being Alone."

With a groundbreaking sound that obliterates the dividing lines between Techno, Trance and Breakbeat stylings, Underworld bury a subtle Indie Rock attitude slightly beneath the textural surface of their blissful synthetic insanity. With the drop of each new release, this U.K. sensation proves their worthiness as one of the most innovative and important dance fusion acts of the 1990s. Accredited as heavy hitters in the struggle to bring dance music to the attention of the mainstream, electronica darlings Underworld continue to draw an impressive fanbase on both the international club scene and the airwaves with their widely influential style that blends electronic intricacy with king-size, floor-friendly grooves.

Rune Reilly Kolsch (aka Rune, Rune RK and Enur) struck gold in 2003 with his first release, "Calabria," a sax-driven soca-house anthem; in 2005, DJ Alex Gaudino fused it with Crystal Waters' "Destination Unknown," releasing the mash-up as "Destination Calabria." (Destination No. 4 on the U.K. singles chart would also be correct.) Not to be outdone, Rune -- now recording as Enur -- re-released the track in 2007, featuring vocals from the Danish reggae singer Natasja Saad. Remixes from Mims and Vybz Kartel, a skin-baring video and nonstop club play helped ensure the song's ubiquity.

The Danish producer's populism hasn't cost him his credibility. When he teamed up with New York soulful-house mainstay Jerome Sydenham to remix Argy's "1985," it appeared on Hamburg's Liebe Detail, a heavy-hitter in the minimal-house niche. Even stranger is the revelation that the mysterious Ink and Needle as well as the Tattoo Rec label, whose vinyl-only singles are favorites of Europe's after-hours set, are also the work of Reilly Kolsch -- proof, perhaps, that an "underground" rep is also only skin deep.

Faithless' signature Progressive House/Trance stylings straddle clubland and the pop-approving mainstream. A U.K.-based outfit that started primarily as a union between producers Rollo and Sister Bliss in the early '90s, Faithless later expanded to include two vocalists who helped to earn the group international attention with the singles "Salva Mea," "Insomnia" and "Reverence." Known for producing melodic tracks filled with lush synthlines, tradition-creating club beats and mind-opening vocals, Faithless take few musical risks to keep their existing fan base entranced.

Swedish DJ and producer Eric Prydz first burst onto the international club scene in 2004 with his chart-topper "Call on Me." The song, which sampled the Steve Winwood classic "Valerie," became a hit, topping the U.K. singles chart for six weeks. Before this success, Prydz was a drummer in the Swedish synth band, Enemy Alliance, a group that dreamt of becoming the next Kraftwerk. But after he began creating his own techno-funk tracks, he was eventually signed to the dance label Credence. Mixing elements of electro and minimal tech-house, Prydz creates peak-time floor fillers that are championed by some of the biggest DJs in the world. The prolific musician has also founded three successful dance labels.

Describing his style as "percussive wet funk," Timo Maas has come a long way from his early days spinning chart hits and simple trance at friends' parties in Germany. An early hit with "Mama Konda" (1997) under his Orinoko moniker caught the attention of some big names in the dance world and he soon picked up several high profile residencies, including a regular slot at New York's Twilo. By this time he had moved on to a big beat progressive house sound, with remixes by Azzido Da Bass' "Dooms Night" and Lustral's epic "Everytime" cementing his reputation. His debut solo work (actually recorded with long-time production partner Martin Buttrich) Loud (2002) took both fans and critics by surprise. Instead of a predictably banging techno-electro-house energy fest, he produced something altogether more thoughtful. Tracks like "Help Me" almost had a pop feel to them, the break beat monster, "Shifter" would remain a club classic for years to come while "To Get Down" and "Ubik" called to mind Blancmange and Heaven 17 in the best ways possible. Pictures (2005) confounded fans once again and proved to be an altogether more mellow affair, leaning closer to the rock world than house, perhaps reflecting a more calm private life resulting from marriage and parenthood.

Since 1994, Way Out West have been creating dance music that ranges from blistering trance anthems and breakbeat soundscapes to downtempo, post-clubbing pop. Made up of DJs Jody Wisternoff and Nick Warren, the Bristol, England-based duo signed to DeConstruction Records in the mid-'90s and released their debut, self-titled album soon after. They followed up with Intensify in 2001 and Don’t Look Now in 2004.

One half of the duo Gabriel & Dresden, Josh Gabriel is one of progressive house music's heavy hitters, and a multitalented one at that. The duo routinely sweeps up International Dance Music Awards such as Best Producer, Best Global DJ and Best Dance Act, and its recordings tend to pepper both the Billboard dance charts and the top jocks' biggest mix CDs; the U.K.'s Toolroom Records tapped Gabriel & Dresden to compile and mix an installment of the imprint's popular Toolroom Knights series. Gabriel, who got his start making electronic music as a teenager, using Yamaha's DX-7 and primitive computers, has also been a member of the groups Andain and Motorcycle, and since 2001 he has released a string of successful singles. In 2008 he finally released his solo debut, Eight. Washed with the melancholic tones of '80s electro-pop and hardwired with the rhythms of peak-time techno, it's a perfect merger of split personalities.

Although his collaborative commercial projects with media favorite Sasha earned him the title of world-class DJ/producer, John Digweed proves he is strong enough to stand solo. Famed for organizing the crowd-pulling Bedrock events in the U.K. city of Hastings, this club culture institution weathers the ever-changing dance trends with staid grace. Digweed's musical adeptness at conquering a wide range of styles takes you on a subliminal journey back and forth across the Atlantic from New York to London, simultaneously reminiscing about dance music's past and imagining its future. The mesmerizing Progressive sound flows smoothly between House and Trance and will win over both the club-goer and the introverted listener.

Club favorite DJ Dan doles out the Funk in king-size chunks on these sweaty House grooves, courtesy of Moonshine Music. Flip-flopping between House and Techno, this West Coast-based DJ extraordinaire has paired up with U.K. heavy-hitter Carl Cox on a variety of projects, remixed labelmates Keoki and Cirrus, and seduced Mixmag journalists with his banging House tunes. A pumping mix of massive basslines, boxy beats and brain-blitzing rhythms typifies this international mainstay's style, offering an airtight explanation for his impressive crowd-pulling potential. Driven by electronic screeches and squawks, DJ Dan's crackling floor-stompers should be saved for the party's peak hour.

As one of house music's earliest success stories, Miami-based Funky Green Dogs first burst onto the underground dance scene in 1993 with their mega-hit "Reach For Me." The production duo is made up of veteran DJs Oscar G. and Ralph Falcon, who first met in the second grade and began DJing as teenagers. After signing to MCA Records in 2000, they released Super California, an album that mixes dark, underground beats with larger-than-life diva vocals by Tamara Wallace. Along with earning spots on the Billboard Club chart with songs like "Fired Up!" "The Way" and "Until the Day," artists including Madonna, Mary J. Blige, Cher, Seal, the Pet Shop Boys, Jennifer Lopez and the Spice Girls have all requested remixes from the duo.

Rui da Silva, perhaps Portugal's greatest dance music export, left his native country in 1999 and headed over to London, where he hit number one with "Touch Me," a track that Muzik magazine dubbed the biggest single of 2001. In 2003, he was one of several artists Yoko Ono invited to remix her classic, "Walking On Thin Ice."

U.K.-born-and-bred club-charmer Sasha casts a spell over the international progressive house/trance scene with his soul-boosting sound. A much-respected pioneer who stands among such fellow progressives as Paul Oakenfold, John Digweed, BT and Paul van Dyk, this DJ-in-demand assumes worldwide popularity with perfection. A magically deep blend of synths shimmers like a human energy field as heart-stopping beats and spine-tingling effects polish up a spiritual sound that leaves you a little starry-eyed and delightfully dazed. From his phenomenal collaborative projects with John Digweed on the Northern Exposure series to his Ibiza-reflecting addition to the Global Underground sets, Sasha's ever-expanding influence is strengthening around the world with the force of energy channeled from a higher power. All that and he's cute, too.

DJ, producer and mastermind Nick Warren is one of the more respected names in the Progressive House/Trance arena. Bred on the Bristol music scene, Warren established a career as both a solo sensation and as one half of the anthem-dropping House outfit Way Out West, alongside U.K. Drum 'n' Bass producer Jody Wisternoff. Known for his hard, funky Trance sound and club-friendly trend-bucking abilities, Warren's intense, crowd-sensitive mixing skills awarded him residency at the U.K. superclub Cream. He's well on his way to achieving high-profile status on the international Trance scene.

This young, electrifying Chicago band reached the top of its late-'00s live-tronica class thanks in part to its creative covers (e.g. Arcade Fire's "Rebellion (Lies)" and Royksopp's "Remind Me"), but mostly due to explosive performances. 2006's Sugar Coated Bullets, FR's debut album, introduced the group's synth-heavy grooves to a diverse audience, from jam rock fans to electronica junkies. One year later, Gears refined that sound, scaling back the synth experimentation for more songs with more structure. Studio albums aside, though, Future Rock thrive in the present moment and a live performance is the best way to experience the "sound of tomorrow."

Emerging out of Atlanta, the Wamdue Kids (the union of Chris Brann, Chris Clark and Chris Udoh) are armed with a fashionable, jazz-inflected sound that steps slyly from House to Techno styles. R&B-inspired tunes influenced by Chicago House and Detroit Techno drop stabbing hooks that grab club-goers and homebodies alike.

Technical wunderkind James Zabiela is the sort of DJ that makes other DJs nervous. He also serves as a reminder that there is more to the art of deejaying than mixing records, but more on that later. His musical foundations are solid -- working from a young age in his father's record shop, he had access to everything and time to mess with the equipment. By the age of 18 he was already the chief buyer in the house department, and had taken to handing out mixes to any names that happened to drop in. Legend has it that his big break came when he handed a mix to Lee Burridge, who then gave it to Sasha, who asked him to join his Excession agency. This however is only part of the story, since the now- defunct Muzik magazine also claimed him as their discovery when he won their "Bedroom Bedlam" amateur mix competition. Either way, his rise up through the ranks was rapid and impressive and he was soon to be seen playing all over the world, writing about his experiences in the "Zabiela we feel ya" Muzik magazine column and being called in for remixing duties for Virgin Souls and Röyksopp, amongst others.

His rapid success was well deserved -- he clearly loves doing this. The ability to strip down tracks to bar-long loops, reverse them, tweak them, pitch bend and create something completely new obviously thrills him and his joy at the endless malleability of this music generates an infectious enthusiasm within his audience. His technical skill is virtually unmatched anywhere else in the DJ world, with one famous global name claiming to "want to throw up" when he first saw Zabiela rip into his set. To this day, the trainspotters will crowd the decks just to see his hands fly around the equipment.

Mixing abilities are only part of the story however, and as any seasoned DJ or clubber knows, it's all about the programming. The relative lack of time spent on the dancing side of the decks showed in Zabiela's early performances, but it wasn't a problem as he was usually opening for Sasha and didn't really need to seriously bang it out. This was a distant memory by 2005, where his breathtaking performance at the BBC Radio1 party during the annual Winter Music Conference showcased his ability to send a dancefloor into a frenzy. The bravura display was also helped by the inclusion of his track "Robophobia" (2005) -- a seductive blend of driving house, complex beats and catchy vocals -- which he placed before the Buick Project remix of an old KLF classic, a masterful piece of mixing and programming that confirmed his status as one of the great all-rounders in the DJ world. Other DJs should remain nervous -- Zabiela is only just getting started.

Bay Area-based violinist Kenji Williams drops his intense aural constructs upon open-minded electronic audiences under the guise of AbA Structure. Tuned to the spiritually centered frequencies familiar to fans of the Orb, Freaky Chakra and Banco de Gaia, this vibrant genre-hopping act channels an eclectic musical background into various contemporary electronic styles. Meditative melodic drones and dubby basslines bob lazily over easy beats and breaks while hypnotic synth washes paint the spacious backdrop in shiny hues. Lush arrangements fashioned from Trance, Techno, Trip-Hop and House beats appear shrouded in soul-stirring Ambient textures and malleable acidlines.
