Argentina, but as he neared 30 he shed both his last names and his local ties, moving to Ibiza in the mid-'80s and signing on as resident DJ at the island's legendary Amnesia club. It was there that Alfredo began forging the supple, eclectic style that would eventually become known as "Balearic," playing vintage soul and reggae alongside new wave and the first Chicago house tracks. In 1987, he assumed the mantle of godfather of acid house, taking under his wing a crew of music-loving English tourists -- Paul Oakenfold, Danny Rampling and friends -- who would bring the wide-eyed revelations of Amnesia's terrace back to England with them, sparking the infamous "Second Summer of Love."

Since those heady days, Alfredo has remained a vital force on the island, holding residencies at all the big clubs -- Pacha, Privilege, Manumission, Space -- and putting his unmistakable stamp on the scene with productions and mix CDs that embrace new styles while remaining faithful to Balearic's blissful standard.
