Daft Punk assumed their reign over the French electronic scene shortly after the appearance of their second single "Da Funk" in 1995, making mere subjects of such high-profile names as Motorbass, Air and Dimitri from Paris. Transforming a heritage of early Acid House, Detroit Techno, Indie Rock and hip-hop into a flawless progressive electronica sound that made loyal followers of both staunch rock crowds and Techno fiends alike, the collaboration of Guy-Manuel de Homem Christo and Thomas Bangalter triggered a deluge of critical praise. Heavy funk-fortified House beats lumber confidently at a mid-tempo hip-hop pace, weighed down with metallic murmurs, shrill electronic squeals, and catchy vocodered vocal hooks. With a style that shifts without warning from the hard end of dance music to the easier side of the spectrum and takes care to steer clear of cliches and overwrought themes, Daft Punk is the model for crossover electronic music.

Chicago native Ryan Raddon started out as a fan of British New Wave, listening to Tears For Fears, the Smiths and the Cult. However, after hanging around clubs with the great Frankie Knuckles behind the decks he began to develop a taste for house. By the time he attended school in Salt Lake City he was making a name for himself as a DJ and started releasing his own productions. One of them impressed OM Records so much, that they picked it up for distribution. Lured by the energetic house scene, he moved to San Francisco and joined OM in their Artist Relations department, and released his debut It's You, It's Me in 2003. The title track proved popular with the Lazy Dog club founders (Ben Watt and Jay Hannan), and repeated spins at their Sunday Socials led to Ryan making a name for himself as a deep house DJ. More credibility followed, with Roger Sanchez picking up two tracks for his Release Yourself 2003 mix, and Jay Hannan launching his Society Heights label with Raddon's "In This Life" (2003) release. His latest effort In The Moment (2004) offers more soulful laid-back deep house for the mellow faithful.

Deep House guru, downtempo master and Acid Jazz fiend Mark Farina can set the proper mood in any lazy listening environment. Presently based in San Francisco, Farina began his DJ career at age 15, honing his skills by studying the moves of Chicago House masters. Responsible for spearheading the Mushroom Jazz record series and mixing it up on his San Francisco Sessions debut on Om Records, Farina makes appearances on various other compilations from labels all over the world including the much-respected United DJs of America collection. His ultramellow grooves send chill beats beneath a dubby mix of atmospheric melodies, smooth jazz aural textures and sexy wordless vocal clips, making him one of the most reputable DJ/producers on the dance music scene today.

A skilled producer influenced by beat styles belonging to such god-like hip-hop figures as DJ Premier and Prince Paul, DJ Cam creates atmospheres to intensify your most chill moods. Widely unappreciated in his country of origin, this scene-sensitive Frenchman is celebrated in the Mo' Wax-watching sectors in America, the U.K. and Japan. Bearing an atmospheric hip-hop sound rounded out with plenty of well-chosen samples, refined breaks, vinyl scratches and engaging emcees, Cam is part of the circle made up of like-minded stylists as DJ Shadow, DJ Krush and La Funk Mob. Aspects of jazz and dub deepen his diverse head-bobbing style, serving to further mystify the hip-hop phenomenon.

Rune Reilly Kolsch (aka Rune, Rune RK and Enur) struck gold in 2003 with his first release, "Calabria," a sax-driven soca-house anthem; in 2005, DJ Alex Gaudino fused it with Crystal Waters' "Destination Unknown," releasing the mash-up as "Destination Calabria." (Destination No. 4 on the U.K. singles chart would also be correct.) Not to be outdone, Rune -- now recording as Enur -- re-released the track in 2007, featuring vocals from the Danish reggae singer Natasja Saad. Remixes from Mims and Vybz Kartel, a skin-baring video and nonstop club play helped ensure the song's ubiquity.

The Danish producer's populism hasn't cost him his credibility. When he teamed up with New York soulful-house mainstay Jerome Sydenham to remix Argy's "1985," it appeared on Hamburg's Liebe Detail, a heavy-hitter in the minimal-house niche. Even stranger is the revelation that the mysterious Ink and Needle as well as the Tattoo Rec label, whose vinyl-only singles are favorites of Europe's after-hours set, are also the work of Reilly Kolsch -- proof, perhaps, that an "underground" rep is also only skin deep.

Berlin's Jazzanova are standard bearers for the jazzier, more soulful side of electronic music. The group formed in 1995, bringing together six musicians -- Alexander Barck, Claas Brieler, Jurgen von Knoblauch, Roskow Kretschmann, Stefan Leisering and Axel Reinemer -- who shared deep backgrounds in soul, jazz, funk and boogie. Whereas early releases tended towards downtempo and broken beat, fusing live and sampled instruments with meticulously programmed grooves, Jazzanova have steadily moved towards a live band feel; 2008's Of All the Things was their most old-school record yet. But Jazzanova have kept pushing dance music forward via their record labels Jazzanova Compost Records (JCR, a collaboration with Munich's Compost label) and Sonar Kollektiv. The latter label has hosted many of the most acclaimed underground artists of the '00s, including Recloose, Roland Appel, Soulphiction, Ame and Robag Wruhme.

Deep Dish's Sharam "Sharam" Tayebi and Ali "Dubfire" Shirazinia hail from Iran, but it was in Washington, D.C. that they established themselves as two of America's top DJs and producers, probing virtually every nook and cranny of house music: deep, tribal, tech, progressive -- you name it. Collaborating with Carl Craig and remixing Madonna, they have proven unusually adept at bridging underground and mainstream, a talent that elevated them to the world's biggest clubs and festivals and earned them frequent-flier status with themed mix CDs touching down in Dubai, Toronto, Moscow, Ibiza and more. In 2006 they increasingly focused on their solo careers, with Dubfire enjoying underground acclaim for his work with Martin Buttrich, his label Desolat and releases on Richie Hawtin's Minus label.

Jimpster, aka Jamie Odell, has weathered his share of dance-music shifts since he began releasing records in the mid '90s. Martian Arts, a collection of his first singles, offered reliable, jazzy drum'n'bass in the vein of LTJ Bukem; 1999's Messages from the Hub, his first proper solo album, retained the references to Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis and Stevie Wonder, but it varied the pace from bleepy, slo-mo synthesizer soul and dubby downtempo in the vein of Kruder and Dorfmeister to mid-tempo jams with the lurch of West London's broken beat scene. Released in 2002, Domestic Science found Jimpster moving into the realm of house music, but it still showed unusual attention to detail in crystalline sound design, inventively funky rhythms and emotive, jazz-inflected chord changes. In 2006, he released Amour, his most accomplished album yet, for the Japanese label Village Again; the U.K.'s Freerange, his longtime home base, picked it up for worldwide release. Amour shared the precision percussion of European minimal techno and the plus sonics of house revivalists like Ame and Dixon. But in its scope and its sensuality, it remained pure Jimpster.

London's Matthew Herbert is an anomaly in electronic music: while he got his start crafting Chicago-inspired house tracks for the more discerning ravers of the '90s, the bulk of his career has been defined by his conceptual bent and political activism. Herbert's music was always unconventional, but his move away from the dance-floor status quo came with his Personal Contract for the Composition of Music, a manifesto dictating the hows and whys behind his use of samplers and synthesizers. At heart an ethical approach in defiance of the increasing ease of electronic-music production, the P.C.C.O.M. led Herbert in a more activist direction as he began to move from the sounds of the personal (a beating heart or clattering toothbrush) to the political (an oil tank being filled, or a Big Mac thrown against a wall). Still, deep house and downtempo fans won't be thrown off by the intimacy of albums like Around the House or Bodily Functions. In addition to the side projects Doctor Rockit and Radioboy, Herbert also conducts the Herbert Big Band Orchestra, a modern-day take on the classic big bands of the '30s and '40s.

Emphatically French, St. Germain's signature textured House stylings are filtered defiantly through the jazz realm in a manner akin to U.S. DJ/producer Kevin Yost. Undeniably more sophisticated (in the jazz sense) than any of Yost's work, St. Germain creates lush, drunken atmospheres that layer raw jazz instrumentals over slick electronic machinations and solid sound and vocal samples. A producer on the dance scene since the early '90s, St. Germain is Ludovic Navarre, the man who co-produced the classic tune "Acid Eiffel" with Laurent Garnier. Navarre's sophomore effort Tourist appeared in late 2000, a release that almost instantaneously gained the global ear and won him much-deserved respect on the international scene.

Like his frequent production partner Jerome Sydenham, New Jersey's Dennis Ferrer expertly rides the line between soulful, so-called "spiritual" house and the tougher, more streamlined sounds of progressive house and minimal techno. Building a rhythmic base of shimmying Latin percussion and hard-charging drum machines, Ferrer blows his tracks wide open with memorable riffs, driving basslines, spacious pads and dub effects. His music wears the colors of disco, gospel, Afrobeat or Detroit techno, their proportions shifting with every new production. In addition to his numerous appearances on labels like Ibadan, Defected and King Street Sounds, Ferrer also runs Objektivity, home to his proteges the Martinez Brothers, his Son of Raw side project and surprising one-offs like Ane Brun's extraordinary "Headphone Silence."

The essential element to heighten the passion in any seduction set-up, Kevin Yost's steamy House stylings promise to make the candles to burn slower, the silk feel finer and the wine taste mellower.
As one of the people who helped spur the 1990s house revival in Chicago, Derrick Carter produces a hearty blend of house and techno -- i.e. dreamy, lofty house music full of funk and grooves, with complex beat arrangements more rooted in Techno. Once described by Detroit's Richie Hawtin (a.k.a. Plastikman; Plus 8 Records, Minus Records) as "America's last true underground DJ," Carter has produced a number of hits since launching his career in the late 1980s, including "An Open Secret," "I'm Sorry," and "Limbo In Slo Mo." Carter records under a variety of names (including Rednail, Symbols and Instruments, Oneiro and Tone Theory), has collaborated with numerous techno DJs and producers (including Mark Farina, Luke Solomon, Chris Nazuka and John Griffin) on numerous house tracks, and has founded two labels (Blue Cucaracha and Classic). Carter's latest work is a raucous romp through techno and acid house/deep house territory, and continues to prove his talent.

As a pioneer in both Acid House (as a member of Phuture) and the aggressive, tribal wild pitch sound, Davis has developed a unique sound that combines stark minimalism with deep emotion. Eschewing the easy 4/4 shuffle favored by many House producers, he instead concentrates on creating cuts that are rhythmically unpredictable while still being entirely danceable. Melodic, soulful and effortlessly funky.

Distance recording artist Kings of Tomorrow (or K.O.T.) is the product of established hip-hop and Deep House producer Sandy Rivera. With a club music career that spans a decade, DeepVision label owner Rivera is known for teasing up sublime Deep House sounds that appear both with and without vocal accompaniment, spreading sweetness across international dancefloors. Often enlisting the vocal talents of such figures as Julie McKnight (wife of Adult Contemporary icon Brian), Freddy Turner and Karen Workman, among others, Rivera's masterful tracks are always satisfyingly melodic and wholly inviting. These tracks service the Prada-clad set in late night urban locales.

Hailing from Finland, Luomo fuses experimental romance with dark, shadowy edges to create a restless mix of electronic soundscapes that skip eerily over modern dance beats. Mixing elements of disco, house, glitch-pop and minimal techno, Luomo's background as a jazz drummer brings a smooth, syncopated vibe to electronic's usually repetitive drum lines. His forward-thinking take on minimal house has led to studio collaborations with Massive Attack, DFA and the Scissor Sisters. With fractured rhythms and abstract lyrics in songs like "Tessio" off 2000's Vocalcity EP and "If I Can't" from 2008's Convivial, Luomo's sound began to be referred to as "microhouse."

Gigi rocked the often unflappable world music community with her self-titled 2001 debut. Expertly shepherded by the sometimes over-prolific Bill Laswell, the release harnessed the Ethiopian sensibilities that made the Ethiopiques series so celebrated and gives them a masterful updating with the help of a powerful cast of musicians that amazingly includes jazzmen Wayne Shorter and Pharoah Sanders as well as master percussionists/experimentalists Karsh Kale and Aiyb Dieng. But the real focus is Gigi herself, a massively talented and relatively young singer who is already phrasing her lyrics like a seasoned professional. Oh, yeah -- she writes all her own music as well. Gigi's a very welcome voice in the never talent-thirsty world music realm.

Beginning his musical career as half of Everything But the Girl (with wife Tracey Thorn), Ben Watt has gone on to become a producer, DJ and founder of Buzzin' Fly Records. The house stage of Watt's life began with Todd Terry's 1995 remix of Everything But the Girl's "Missing," which Watt then remixed under the pseudonym Little Joey before going on to dabble in drum 'n' bass with "Wrong," a UK Top 10 hit from the Walking Wounded album. Subsequent clubland success led to a partnership with KISS-FM's Jay Hannan and their formation of the U.K. club night Lazy Dog. The five-year event spawned two compilations and a number of remixes for Sade, Maxwell and Sunshine Anderson, among others, along with the breakout hit "Tracey in My Room," released on Astralwerks in 2000. Since ending Lazy Dog in 2003, Watt has turned his attentions to his deep-house label Buzzin' Fly and its pop offshoot, Feeling Strange, refining his own soulful sound with releases like "Lone Cat" and "A Stronger Man." In 2008, Buzzin' Fly -- which he describes as "replenishing music for the modern soul" -- released the anniversary compilation 5 Golden Years in the Wilderness.

With a talent for combining sublime Deep House sounds with the steadfast Detroit Techno tradition, Ian Pooley is consistent in his efforts to take dance music into the future. Pooley's quality tech-house sounds first came out on the well-respected German label Force. Inc., and during the course of the '90s appeared on such labels as Odori, NRK, Sublime and Strive. In addition, Pooley tossed off remixes for a number of artists including Dave Angel, Green Velvet, Ken Ishii, Yello and others. Well-crafted club rhythms come layered with textured technoid effects wrapped in the warm, soulful elements of House. Haunting melodies and vocals loop expertly over a variety of beat patterns and dark, funky basslines of the depthless type. Essential.

Deserving of respect as one of France's leading House stylists alongside Daft Punk and Cassius, Turkish-born Dimitri is known for servicing international club-goers with body-slicking grooves. Acclaimed for his debut full-length Sacrebleu (1998) and the Playboy-endorsed Astralwerks mix for the label's Respect is Burning series, Dimitri from Paris takes to the decks with confidence and style. Typical Dimitri-produced tracks offer you something retro-disco-esque, irresistibly funky and packed with plenty of precoital anticipation. Each jazz-inflected floor-burner dons skimpy vocal clips, skin-revealing rhythms and lip-licking melodic loops. These stylish designs promise to keep the party moving in various directions, whether it be on the dancefloor, at the bar or even in the bedroom. Essential tunes for Hugh Hefner admirers and other hedonistic types.

Young, stylistically versatile and indisputably talented, the Frenchman behind the moniker i:cube is Paris-based Nicolas Chaix. Touted as "one to watch" by numerous music industry heads, journalists and French music scene-followers, i:cube stands alongside fellow electronic geniuses Air, Daft Punk, Alex Gopher and Motorbass. i:cube's sincere Tech-House and downtempo sounds are splashed with warm, toned-down effects from dub and electro creating a mildly funky, groovesome ambience. Mastering the art of aural eclecticism through ever-shifting rhythms and moves, i:cube concocts subtle arrangements meant to accompany the earliest of quiet morning hours.

Morgan Geist's Metro Area -- a duo with fellow DJ and producer Darshan Jesrani -- is rightly regarded as instrumental in disco's '00s revival, but Geist's solo career goes even deeper back. An early fan of synthesizer music, whether New Wave, industrial or disco, he was captivated early on by the sound of Detroit techno and its offshoots, and he wasted no time getting into the game himself: he released his first single in 1994, while he was still in college. He developed his sound -- a supple mix of electro-boogie, Italo, analog R'n'B and soulful techno -- across a string of records for labels like Dan Curtin's Metamorphic, Clear and his own Environ imprint, and his 1998 LP Clear remains a classic of jazz-inflected, Detroit-inspired techno. During the '00s, Geist largely focused his efforts on Metro Area, but he returned in 2008 with two excellent singles, "Most of All" and "Detroit," in advance of a new album for fall.

Respected U.K. House/Garage producer Charles Webster masterminds Presence's creamy downbeat dance moods. Illuminated by an ever-changing lineup of accomplished vocalists and musicians (among them Shara Nelson and Sara Jay, both of Massive Attack fame), Presence emanate groovy, pop-appealing vibes that rejuvenate you like a long soak in a mineral bath. Fluid late-night tracks blend with quiet, concentrated emotions, gently removing pessimistic tones from a self-serving melancholic attitude. Light beats mingle with reflective melodies and shapeless Ambient washes. Music that fills the emptiest of life's moments with the deepest soul.
