The worldwide dancefloor domination of Benny Benassi's "Satisfaction" has proven very, well, pleasing, to this lifelong fan of 1980s electronica, and indeed the influence of Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode and Giorgio Moroder can be clearly heard in the track's mechanized vocals and lush, driving beats. Benassi describes this dirty electro-house style as "hypnotech," and claims that the bassline for "Satisfaction" was created by his cousin Alle Benassi drawing inspiration from the sounds of traffic outside his hotel window. Much in demand for remixing duties, Benassi prefers to handpick what he likes and turn down the rest, going for quality rather than quantity. So far he has sat behind the mixing desk for Outkast, Goldfrapp, Robbie Rivera and Electric Six, among others. Production work includes his solo full-length outing, Hypnotica, along with his and Alle's "Benny Benassi presents The Biz" project, a more minimalist soundscape blending techno, electro and house. In 2004, Benny was nominated for three Dancestar awards and won for best video -- which just goes to show what you can achieve with some semi-naked women and a set of power tools.

Growing up in Chicago in the 1970s, Felix Stallings Jr. was exposed to classic house at a young age, including Farley "Jack Master" Funk and Kenny "Jamming" Jason. His saxophonist father also turned him on to the funk and soul worlds of Stevie Wonder and Earth, Wind & Fire, but it was house that really caught Stallings' ear, and after introducing himself to local hero DJ Pierre, he produced his first single, "Phantasy Girl," in 1987. Parental pressure to finish his schooling led him to enroll at Alabama State University (an experience he compared to prison), but a reconnection with DJ Pierre brought him back to music as a successful producer with the European smash "Thee Dawn" in 1992. As his overseas fame grew, Stallings was producing "a track a week for three different labels," using aliases like Rocketman, Outerrealm, Thee Glitz, Wonderboy and Thee Maddkatt Courtship. A meeting with Miss Kittin in Switzerland led to the award-winning Kittenz & Thee Glitz, an electro-punk masterpiece that had everyone yearning for "endless pleasure in a limousine." His remixing credits include Madonna, Nina Simone, Kylie Minogue and the Pet Shop Boys, and he was nominated in 2003 for a Grammy for his work on Rinocerose's "Lost Love."

Disco lives -- thrives, in fact -- in the work of Hercules and Love Affair, the New York outfit helmed by the red-haired wunderkind Andrew Butler. Dedicated to the golden days of club culture, the band combines elements of the early '80s -- electronic disco and Chicago house -- with melancholy riffs and atmospheres and clever songwriting full of subtle twists and turns. As a teenager, Butler began DJing in the leather bars of his hometown, Denver; by college, he was applying his talents to contemporary composition and conceptual art. But the dance bug still lurked within. When, after moving to New York, he discovered that its dancing days were all but over, he set about working to rectify that.

In 2007, Butler teamed up with DFA's Tim Goldsworthy to release the "Classique" single; the following year he returned with "Blind," an out-of-nowhere mind-melter featuring the voice of none other than Antony Hegarty, of Antony and the Johnsons. Shortly thereafter, Hercules and Love Affair released their eponymous debut album, with Antony's space-castrato voice the undeniable centerpiece on an album brimming with springy arpeggios, lugubrious bass lines and bright, brassy horns.

Formed in 2001, Audio Bullys are Simon Franks and Tom Dinsdale, two suburban Londoners who grew up listening to hardcore, garage and house, along with the Kinks, the Beatles and the Specials. Franks grew up in a musical family, learning to play piano and drums at an early age. Dinsdale took the DJing route and was resident at London's Milk N' 2 Sugars event at the age of 17. Their love of a good tune, combined with a passion for cutting loose and larging it with the masses, was entirely evident in their debut release, Ego War (2003). Dubbed "lad house," their sound neatly blended all their influences and picked up where Basement Jaxx left off -- dance music for people who want a bit of a shout. The initial single "We Don't Care" set out their manifesto, and club land embraced it. Their lyrical approach is much like that of the Streets' Mike Skinner: small tales of urban life and general reactions to the everyday. Their follow-up, Generation (2006), suffered slightly from second album syndrome, but nonetheless still demonstrated their musical skill, particularly with the single "Shot You Down" that sampled Nancy Sinatra's Kill Bill soundtrack opener, "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)."

The Liverpool-based, Dadaist and punk-inspired career of the KLF (Kopyright Liberation Front) has been built upon a succession of industry pranks, beginning with the sample-heavy acid house movement of the late 1980s and early '90s. Essentially the duo of Bill Drummond and Jimi Cauty, the group began as the Justified Ancients of Mu-Mu (JAMS); later, a one-off stint as the Timelords resulted in a minor hit with "Doctorin' the Tardis." Never ones to hide their contempt for the music industry, at the point they struck fortune in England with the soulful hits "3 A.M. Eternal" and "What Time Is Love?," they refused to play the songs straight, instead asking grindcore favorites Extreme Noise Terror to be the backing band. In addition to spraying crowds with faux machine-gun bullets and reportedly dumping a sheep's carcass in a hotel lobby, the band has also written a manual on how to write pop songs. They have since refused to release any more music until world peace has arrived.

As a pioneer in both Acid House (as a member of Phuture) and the aggressive, tribal wild pitch sound, Davis has developed a unique sound that combines stark minimalism with deep emotion. Eschewing the easy 4/4 shuffle favored by many House producers, he instead concentrates on creating cuts that are rhythmically unpredictable while still being entirely danceable. Melodic, soulful and effortlessly funky.

As one of the leading electronic groups of the late 1980s, the Shamen were best known for their acid house anthems including "Move Any Mountain," "Pro>Gen," and "Ebeneezer Goode." Founded in Scotland by Colin Angus, the band took its name from Angus' interests in the mystical world of shamanism. Technology wizard Will Sin joined the group and in 1988, the Shamen moved to London, where they met their future lead singer, DJ Mr. C. Mixing Mr. C's rap skills with rock guitar riffs, funky beats, melodic pop and a psychedelic vibe, the band became one of the major acts of the early '90s rave culture, releasing several U.K. chart-topping albums. They were also one of the first electronic dance bands to introduce live music to clubbers. Mr. C went on to open a world-famous nightclub, The End, in London.

Widely recognized as the godfather of House, Frankie Knuckles migrated from New York to Chicago at the time when Disco was about to explode into the mainstream in the late '70s. Together with fellow friends and pioneers Ron Hardy and Larry Levan, Knuckles claims responsibility for creating House from a raw Disco blueprint. Smooth mixes balance out Chicago-style grooves with New York nuances, often spotlighting R&B vocals from varied superstar divas like Jamie Principle and Adeva. Still part of the dance music scene today, Knuckles' influence continues to spread among House enthusiasts throughout the world.

Although his collaborative commercial projects with media favorite Sasha earned him the title of world-class DJ/producer, John Digweed proves he is strong enough to stand solo. Famed for organizing the crowd-pulling Bedrock events in the U.K. city of Hastings, this club culture institution weathers the ever-changing dance trends with staid grace. Digweed's musical adeptness at conquering a wide range of styles takes you on a subliminal journey back and forth across the Atlantic from New York to London, simultaneously reminiscing about dance music's past and imagining its future. The mesmerizing Progressive sound flows smoothly between House and Trance and will win over both the club-goer and the introverted listener.

With his 1987 debut single "Beat Dis," Bomb the Bass' Tim Simenon took the gleeful cut 'n' paste hip-hop aesthetic of DJs such as Steinski and Grandmaster Flash and transplanted it into an English acid house context. Over funky hip-house breaks, Simenon crafted a mad patchwork of samples from sources as disparate as Public Enemy and the "Thunderbirds" theme. Along with a few white labels from Coldcut, "Beat Dis" ushered in a fresh new sound, and its enormous commercial impact almost equaled the artistic influence it wielded over next-generation producers. Subsequent albums, especially the stoned-out Unknown Territory (1991), were even more obvious precursors to trip-hop, and outside productions for Neneh Cherry and Bjork kept Simenon on the charts. He returned under the BTB name in 1995 with Clear; that album's gritty textures, blasts of noise and rock textures were a direct precedent for the big beat that would follow a few years later. While it appears that Simenon has since put his Bomb the Bass name to sleep, the influence of his handful of party-rocking records can be heard daily. It's difficult to imagine trip-hop and big beat existing without Bomb the Bass, and every time you hear a house producer throw in a breakbeat, you're hearing an echo of "Beat Dis."

The Timelords are none other than the notorious agents provocateurs Bill Drummond and Jimi Cauty (aka the KLF, and the JAMS). This iconoclastic duo has made a career out of scandalizing glib, self-complacent music industry nabobs by, for instance, deliberately plagiarizing ABBA and by burning mass quantities of their own recordings. Agitprop antics aside, the two are brilliant producers and composers, laying down infectious House grooves that work as either straight-ahead dance floor anthems or sarcastic parodies of club culture in toto.

Legendary House producer/remixer Ralphi Rosario helped bring the style to the mainstream with the aid of other members of Chicago's WBMX Hot Mix 5 team. Best known as the force behind the seminal club classic "You Used to Hold Me," Rosario appeared frequently on the charts in the late '80s and '90s with such numbers as "I Want You" and "Pieces." Throbbing beats and pulsating effects cradle strict diva vocals and dense piano riffs. Swaddled in a subtle pop quality that avoids alienating crowds at the club, Rosario's funky grooves helped set the House standard.

Record buyers in 1978 who thought the names "Joachim Sherylee" and "Junior Claristidge" were too good to be true turned out to be right. Over a quarter of a century later, when Rephlex reissued Black Devil's impossibly rare Disco Club -- so rare that some wondered if the whole thing was one of Aphex Twin's hoaxes -- the mythical electro-disco project turned out to be the work of Bernard Fevre, a French musician who had then disappeared into obscurity. Emboldened by the feverish response to the 2004 re-release of Disco Club, Fevre returned in 2006 with 28 After. The title referenced the delay before his sophomore effort, but its pitch-perfect Italo-disco pastiche sounded like his drum machines had barely cooled since the 1978 sessions. With flayed hi-hats, gurgling electronic bass and ghostly, dubbed-out vocals, 28 After established Fevre's privileged place in the disco continuum. Fans who had marked their calendars for a third album in 2034 were delighted when the disco Rumpelstiltskin resurfaced in 2008 with Eight Oh Eight, a tribute to the legendary Roland drum machine.

Continuing to pursue the potentialities of combining parodic Pop sensibilities (as evidenced on 20 Jazz Funk Greats) and agit-prop art noise, the band's early recordings remained deeply anchored in a proto-Industrial "Theater of Pain" aesthetic. But by the time Allegory and Self was released in 1988, Peter Christopherson had long since left the band, giving Genesis P-Orridge free reign to indulge his experiments in dance electronica. Dubbing his style of trippy rhythms and post-modern sampling "Acid House," P-Orridge has continued drawing on the inspiration of mind-altering (or in his case mind-eradicating) drugs, the occult, and postmodern theories of cut-up and pastiche to create futuristic ritual music.

Hip-house founder and Acid House originator Tyree is known for producing several tracks that stormed the dance charts in the late '80s and early '90s. Starting off with a Chicago house sound that included strategically placed hip-hop vocals, Tyree moved into the acid arena with the seminal club favorite "Acid Over." Squiggly acidlines dodge stomping beats that shudder the dancefloor like fallen speakers.

German heavyweight Westbam is one of the most impressive figures in dance music today. Acclaimed in the late 1980s for first organizing the Love Parade, a massive outdoor event that takes place in Berlin and pulls in over 250,000 partiers annually, Westbam is both a legend among club promoters and a hero to dance fiends. His genre-defying, anthem-dropping style moved from Chicago House to Detroit Techno before relenting to the Trance trend in the late '90s. This leader of Germany's highly respected scene is a revered icon who shows no signs of slowing down.

An outlet allowing Germany's favorite Minimalist Techno purist Mike Ink to exercise his commercial dance sensibilities, the Love Inc. project satiates the mainstream's appetite for pop in an intelligent fashion. Lightly pumping Euro beats bob easily beneath textured urban-esque female vocals delivering positive lyrics promoting self-love. These affectionate grooves uplift easy-to-please House heads and impressionable pop listeners.

Famed for discovering the "acid effect" in the mid-80s Chicago House explosion, DJ Pierre was one-third of the Phuture crew. The group unleashed the instant classic "Acid Trax" upon the masses in 1986, a move which spawned the historic Acid House movement. By the '90s, DJ Pierre had shed his early acid techniques to focus his skills on laying down floor-focused rhythms lined with crowd-moving effects and well-honed DJ expertise.

With his minimalist, funky style, Armando helped develop House in its nascent stages. Introduced to the scene as a teen, this youthful all-star DJ in demand was spinning throughout the Windy City in the mid '80s and early '90s. A club sensation who fed the fire that led to the U.K.'s Acid House eruption, Armando released several classic cuts and participated in the establishment of the business side of the dance music industry during his career.

A real mixed bag. Depending on what track you select, Norwegian house producer's music can either sound like a work-in-progress or just the shot in the arm the dancefloor needs. Speak-and-Spell, German folksongs set to jungle's BPMs, and other manipulated samples are the gold for the careful listener.
