The Prodigy always understood the need for visceral energy in dance music. What made them unique at the time of their debut in 1991 was the fusing of punk sounds and mores with the emergent acid house beats of the dancefloor. This glowstick-with-a-safety-pin-through-it attitude was made manifest by front man Keith Flint, a snarling manic Johnny Rotten for the club crowd, but the true soul of the group was techno boffin Liam Howlett. Liam was a local Essex DJ at a time when one could say the word rave without fear of scorn or imprisonment. He had seen the effect of a big track on the right crowd and was keen to try his hand at some original compositions. Keith Flint and Leeroy Thornhill had heard Liam spin and pestered him for mix tapes and examples of his songs. Before long they were working together, taking their name from Liam's Moog synthesizer. Their debut was "What Evil Lurks" (1991) but it was the second effort "Charly" (1991) that made the big impact, going to No. 3 in the UK charts. "Fire" (1991) also made the Top-20, after which they released their debut long player The Prodigy Experience (1992), which sold over 1 million copies in the UK alone. By now word was out about their live performances -- an intense combination of Tubeway Army style keyboard-lurking (Liam) and full-on mental moshing (Keith and Leeroy). Clearly Underworld's Karl Hyde must have been paying attention -- it was now possible for an electronic dance act to be exciting live, instead of just po-faced avant-garde. Music For A Jilted Generation (1995) was next -- a hard techno banger of an album that made no concessions to the loved-up house massive. However, it was the release of "Firestarter" from their third opus The Fat Of The Land (1997) that really put them on the mass media map. Fearful that the track and its provocative video were inciting arson, the inevitable tabloid frenzy ensured The Prodigy were a household name by the end of the year. "Breathe" (1995) was even bigger -- the beats so massive that it crossed genre boundaries to be popular with metal fans, rock heads and house fanatics across the country. The time was right to really push their luck, which they did with the release of "Smack My Bitch Up" (1997), a track almost specifically designed to simultaneously fill dance floors and appall the politically correct. It was a huge hit and they were at the top of their game. Time then for some time off, which ended up being seven years, before Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned (2004) was released. This proved to be more of a solo effort from Liam. All three original members were back on board, though, for 2009's Invaders Must Die.

Sprung from the loins of Death from Above 1979, MSTRKRFT are rockers on a disco mission. Beginning in 2004, the duo -- comprised of DFA1979's Jesse Keeler and the group's producer Al-P (Al Puoudziukas) -- started earning notoriety for its remixes of bands like Panthers, the Kills and the Gossip; in 2006 MSTRKRFT moved into original productions with the album The Looks and related singles. Their frequent DJ gigs -- including a tour with John Digweed -- have confirmed their commitment to the dance floor, while their many remix credits (for Bloc Party, Justice, Chromeo D.I.M., even Usher and Kylie Minogue) have confirmed their stature in the "blog-house" scene. In 2008, they continued to expand their sound with "Bounce," featuring the rapper N.O.R.E.. The single, a thuggish crunk-up of grinding electro-house, came with remixes from Bloody Beetroots and Felix Cartal.

As the most successful German musical act ever, Scooter have surpassed Michael Jackson, Britney Spears and the Pet Shop Boys as the highest-ranking group on the German Media Control charts. But whereas those artists create music for mainstream audiences, Scooter's music is all about hardcore techno. At last count, Scooter had enjoyed over 400 weeks on the pop charts by pounding their way into the dancing shoes of the German masses. Driving trance and hardcore dance beats lay devastation wherever they are heard. Indeed, where many of the mid-'90s rave acts have either disbanded or changed their style, Scooter have continued to dominate the German club scene with songs like the sing-along soccer stadium anthem -- featuring British group Status Quo -- "Jump That Rock (Whatever You Want)" and their 1994 hit "Hyper Hyper." Scooter's techno party anthems are all about having fun. On stage, the group is known for its punk-rock antics and over-the-top performances that feature fireworks and spectacular stage effects. With over 17 albums and 35 singles, Scooter are far from slowing down.

A few turntablists aside, DJing has always been as much about what you play as how you play it. And Philly-by-way-of-Florida DJ/ producer Diplo, perhaps more than any other artiste from this decade, is adept at locating the sonic correlations between culturally disparate sounds. His sets effortlessly oscillate between Rio de Janeiro's favela funk, U.K. grime, Baltimore club music, Southern crunk, indie-electro and other as-yet-unclassifiable music. The aim is to get feet on the dance floor, but the effort also rewards listeners with new contexts for appreciating music. Diplo has blurred the line between artist and critic, and his mixes bring up questions of propriety, exploitation and the relationship between the third world producers and first world consumers. His debut, 2003's Florida, was a bit of a tepid redux of late-1990s DJ Shadow-influenced trip-hop, but his 2005's Fabric mix is excellent.

Milan's fine threads must have made Italian house duo Crookers feel itchy. What else could explain for the band's wiggly, wriggly grooves, perfect examples of a style rightly dubbed "fidget house"? The pair got its start in 2005 with remixes and an EP for Italy's small P-House label, but it was their remixes -- along with their sweat-and-Campari-soaked DJ sets -- that eased their entry into the indie and electro scenes. What sets Crookers apart from many of their peers is their versatility. While commissions from the likes of Moby and the Chemical Brothers secured its club cred, the duo has also shown a facility for eking out acid-house bangers from rockers like the Whip or translating Brazilian funk carioca for European tastes. Without a doubt, this is party music: big, brash and gleefully dumb, battered by spasmodic funk and littered with vocal snippets and vintage samples. Its message is simple: Don't wear your Prada to this rave.

Hardcore demigod Alec Empire, the erratic Carl Crack, venomous vocalist Hanin Alias and recent recruit/Power Electronics wizard Nic Endo form the already legendary entity Atari Teenage Riot. Pairing the immediacy of Hardcore dance beats with the urgency and sentiments of Hardcore Punk, the German quartet uses music as a platform for political change. Each track of beats and distortion forms a driving vehicle for simplistic, dogmatic chants of leftist revolution. ATR play the line between radical poseurs (their anti-capitalist missives appear on major labels) and revolutionaries who live their words (witness their arrest for performing at a peaceful-protest-turned-riot in Berlin). Their unique sounds and fearless words arrived at a perfect moment, when Punk had become musically stale and dance music was becoming increasingly apolitical.

As one of the leading electronic groups of the late 1980s, the Shamen were best known for their acid house anthems including "Move Any Mountain," "Pro>Gen," and "Ebeneezer Goode." Founded in Scotland by Colin Angus, the band took its name from Angus' interests in the mystical world of shamanism. Technology wizard Will Sin joined the group and in 1988, the Shamen moved to London, where they met their future lead singer, DJ Mr. C. Mixing Mr. C's rap skills with rock guitar riffs, funky beats, melodic pop and a psychedelic vibe, the band became one of the major acts of the early '90s rave culture, releasing several U.K. chart-topping albums. They were also one of the first electronic dance bands to introduce live music to clubbers. Mr. C went on to open a world-famous nightclub, The End, in London.

Philadelphia doesn't quite rank alongside Detroit, New York or Chicago in the annals of American house and techno, but don't blame Josh Wink: since he and King Britt founded Ovum Recordings in 1994, the formerly dreadlocked dance master has turned out classic after outsized classic to belie his "second city" standing. He first hit ravers' radars with the worldwide underground hits "Don't Laugh" and "Higher State of Consciousness." The latter, with its nimble breakbeat and spookily time-stretched vocal, offered an irresistible fusion of hardcore and acid house, and its standing in the dance-music canon was confirmed with multiple reworks over the years, both by Wink and others. An in-demand DJ, Wink showed versatility behind the decks with mixes like the Profound Sounds series. In 2009, he returned in full force with the studio album When a Banana Was Just a Banana, a collection of muscular, state-of-the-art tech-house that balanced purposeful grooves with cheeky detailing.

Good luck trying to pin down Kid606 (Miguel Depedro). The Venezuelan-born musician was just barely out of adolescence when he began to turn San Diego's experimental music community on its head with a homegrown style fusing the fury and irreverence of punk with the electronic sonics of jungle and techno. After moving to San Francisco in the '90s, he -- along with likeminded mischief-makers such as Kit Clayton, Sutekh, Gold Chains and Matmos -- helped put the Bay Area on the map as a mecca for electronic music's free spirits. Long before Girl Talk, Kid606 was drenching his laptop in the sweat of frenzied crowds, playing a sly, pop-loving strain of high-energy dance music. But Kid606 has never been just a prankster. While he's prone to snarky titles ("Luke Vibert Can Kiss My Indie-Punk Whiteboy Ass") and his music often revels in fluorescent samples and breakneck tempos, he's also capable of the tender, contemplative I.D.M. of P.S. I Love You. His Tigerbeat6 label, meanwhile, is one of America's great electronic indies, encompassing a roster as diverse as Pimmon, Numbers, Knifehandchop, Black Dice and the Bug.

The Grande Dame of Digital Hardcore, Alec Empire, has a drive and ambition that could not have arrived at a better time. As European dance music became progressively de-politicized through the 1990s, Empire was inspired by militants such as Detroit's Underground Resistance, who connected their hard-edged Techno to intense social discontent. Empire took this further by advocating outright anarchy accompanied by devastating distortion, high-decibel sloganeering and Hardcore beats that verge on abusive. As his teen interests in punk and hip-hop switched to Acid House in the late '80s, his music possesses a wide scope of sounds -- breakbeats are pit against jagged guitar samples and acidic synth squelches. He continues to tirelessly produce tracks for Mille Plateaux and his own label Digital Hardcore Recordings, lead his band Atari Teenage Riot, and create countless remixes for a staggering variety of artists, inflecting all with the intent to smash the state.

As a trained drummer and a mainstay of London's late 1980s Acid Jazz scene, Spacetime Continuum's Jonah Sharp has a familiarity with live jazz and soul that sets his music apart from most dance music. Galvanized by Acid House and an early '90s relocation to San Francisco, Sharp has been a constant unifying force in electronica, bringing together Techno, House, Experimental and Ambient with his music, his DJing and his label Reflective. A musical polyglot, Sharp's records take in nearly every subgenre of electronic music from Dub to Jungle, and are distinctive in the organic sounds and earthy structures he employs. Whether aimed at the dance floor or the chill-out room, Spacetime records are always funky and musical, always different and always a step ahead.

At a time when Digital Hardcore (both as a label and a genre)seemed to have spent its last dime on innovation, the producer known as Bomb20 somehow revived the terror. His recordings develop like a nonlinear narrative, rife with barbed dialog samples, beats so distorted they sound more like raw, vague undulations and alarming tones that evoke anxiety like air raid sirens. A blurry nightmare of colliding ideas, catastrophic breakbeats and melodic purge, the world of Bomb20 resembles an aborted video game premise that never made it past the planning stages due to its gratuitously violent content.

Ill breaks lurk in the darkness and bristle with digital distortion and a vengeful low-end on the brink of crushing your ligaments. Justin Broadrick and Kevin Martin create Techno Animal, a hybrid of mutant hip-hop and what Martin would call "Splatterbreak" beats. They drop into the anarchistic territory of Alec Empire and his DHR crew with equal anger and force, and move stealthily through the grimy Metropolis Downtempo of WordSound. Their ominous creations are something to fear. Techno Animal is the anthem of the edge of disaster.

They invented EBM (Electronic Body Music), and then, bored by their invention, left it behind to produce embarrassingly vapid Disco. Their early albums revolutionized the sound of dance music by introducing authoritarian vocals that spit out every line like a direct order amidst a crossfire of explosive beats and flying shards of Industrial noise. Upon reemerging in the late '80s, D.A.F.'s martinet demeanor had given way to an effeminate prissiness. By that time, however, they had already assumed a central place in the history of dance music as the primary inspiration for Nitzer Ebb, Front 242 and Front Line Assembly.
