A revered, recognizable figure on the dance music scene since the early '90s, the enigmatic producer/DJ Moby was catapulted into mainstream stardom with the 1999 release of Play. A surprise hit, Play delved into highly personal areas in a downtempo vein never before explored in any of his previous releases. A master of such styles as techno, house, trance, ambient and breakbeat to name just a few, Moby is blessed with the ability to strike a sincere, emotive chord with a wide range of dance music devotees.

Thievery Corporation hearken back to the suave musical era of the 1950s and '60s, when swizzle sticks and long cigarette holders were in vogue, and relaxing meant having a strong cocktail in very plush surroundings. While inherently down-tempo, Thievery Corporation (Rob Garza and Eric Hilton) toss in elements of nearly every musical genre, including Dub, Reggae, hip-hop, Cocktail/Lounge, jazz, and Funk, creating a highly relaxing world in which your ears will thank you. Predominantly instrumental, the pair occasionally draft the talents of evocative, breathy-vocaled women -- some of whom sing in French! They are also the founders of the Eighteenth Street Lounge nightclub in D.C. (as well as the label of the same name), concentrating on generating a calm and peaceful world in which languid beats, exotic instrumentation, and international influences are omnipresent. While definitely designed for the headnodders, Thievery Corporation continue to gain popularity among a wide variety of people for their sophisticated, stylish, and delicate musical charm.

Studio assistants turned superstars, London's Henry Bins and Sam Hardaker are now finding their cool and sexy tunes played all over the world. Prior to their highly acclaimed debut album, Simple Things, Zero 7 started making waves with a series of EPs and remixes, including Radiohead's "Climbing Up The Walls" and Lenny Kravitz's "If You Can't Say No." Soul vocalists Mozez, Sia Fuller, and Sophie Barker take their downtempo sound into the mainstream, yet their music shows no inclination to sell out.

Ben Watt's versatile production techniques coupled with Tracey Thorn's dry yet emotionally resonant vocals continue to win critical acclaim for Everything But the Girl. They also enjoyed mainstream loyalty throughout dance music's evolution in the '90s. Collaborating with such heavy-hitters as Massive Attack and J Majik, they've brought sophisticated jazz leanings to alternative pop, Trip-Hop, Drum 'n' Bass, and House. Timelessly talented, EBTG prove their ability to both follow and rise above the trends of dance music.

Originally gaining recognition for their down-tempo cocktail funk of "Modular Mix" and "Casanova 70" on the French SourceLab compilations of 1997, Air released their full-length debut the following year. An incredibly ambitious and successful melange of Serge Gainsbourg by way of Vangelis, Moon Safari is awash in strings, vocoders, analog synths, fluttering electro pulses and soulful backbeats. Everything from the rare groove of "La Femme D'Argent" to the Euro-pop of "Kelly, Watch the Stars!" is vaguely familiar, but never so successfully arranged until this point. Live, they are prone to wearing white jumpsuits while strategically placed fans blow wind through their hair, and there is no shortage of body-popping electro-funk. In the end, you are left with perfect road trip music -- assuming you're driving to the moon.

The roots of Massive Attack start in 1983 as the Wild Bunch, a DJ sound system and collective based in England's Bristol. They were known for their broad taste in music, blending reggae with classic R&B and even some punk grooves. Two of the Wild Bunch, Grant "Daddy G" Marshall and Andrew "Mushroom" Vowles split off to form Massive Attack with local graffiti artist Robert "3D" del Naja in 1987. A series of well-received singles followed, but the first Massive Attack album, Blue Lines, was a revelation. At the time of its release in 1992, downtempo electronica and house were the province of Soul To Soul (Keep On Movin') and their dangerously overused but catchy slack-hop beat. Massive Attack, true to their name, came out of nowhere and razed all before them. There was nothing else like it. Credit must be given to producer Nellee Hooper, in some respects the fourth man of the group, since he used his experience producing the first Soul To Soul album to take this new rhythmic style to a different level with the Massive Attack boys, effectively inventing trip-hop in the process. Dubby, soulful and funky, trip-hop became an essential sound for the downtempo cognoscenti. A mini musical revolution had begun, with the likes of Portishead, Beth Orton, the Sneaker Pimps and former Massive Attack member Tricky all starting successful creative careers in the trip-hop world. Sensitive to the cultural zeitgeist of the time in England, the boys briefly changed their name after their debut release to 'Massive' during the first Iraq war. This did not play well in America however, and their first tour here proved a failure. Three years later they came back with Protection, another essential purchase, featuring Everything But The Girl's Tracey Thorn on the stunning opening track. The entire album was then re-mixed by the Mad Professor and released as No Protection. Tracey Thorn's voice was hard to beat, but they managed it with their third release Mezzanine, recruiting the Cocteau Twins' inimitable Elizabeth Fraser, and turning "Teardrop" into the best single the Twins' never released. By the time Massive Attack released their fourth album 100th Window in 2003, it was effectively a solo debut for 3D, since Mushroom and Daddy G had left due to creative differences and family duties respectively. Their most recent work, Danny The Dog, takes them into soundtrack territory, leaving time for frequent remixing requests from anyone with an ear for an elegant and sexy beat.

Along with many other soul-jazz bands coming out of London in the '90s, Jamiroquai (and groups like The James Taylor Quartet) gave critics a good reason to come up with a new genre for the burgeoning electronic sound in jazz. The result was "Acid Jazz" and Jamiroquai's 1993 debut "Emergency on Planet Earth" became a key album for the style and led the band to quickly sign an outstanding eight album deal with Sony. The "Stevie Wonder sounding" lead vocalist and bandleader Jason "Jay" Kay sports a trendy earth conscious lifestyle and has an addiction for fast cars, space traveling and funked-out space disco.

It was inevitable that Sia's unique vocal talent would find a significant audience outside her native Australia. In 2000 her debut album, Healing Is Difficult, was championed by critics -- the lead single, "Taken For Granted," even made the U.K. Top 10 -- but sales were relatively poor. The record did, however, bring Sia to the attention of London studio assistants Henry Bins and Sam Hardaker, who invited her to record vocals for two tracks on a CD they were making in their spare time. The resulting recordings -- "Destiny" and "In The Waiting Line," on Zero 7's world-conquering Simple Things (2001) -- are two of downtempo's high water marks. After touring with Zero 7 (a process she credits with broadening her musical horizons), Sia stepped back from the scene to regroup. Her back-to-basics LP, Colour the Small One (2006), features "Breathe Me," a song used to powerful effect in the closing scene of the finale of TV series Six Feet Under, as well as "The Bully," a song cowritten with Beck. Sia's next major release came in early 2008 with Some People Have Real Problems.

There was a time when A-Ha carried the mantle of globally-successful Norwegian bands, but the arrival of Royksopp's Torbjorn Brundtland and Svein Berge inspired a whole new generation of melodic electronica, making Norway, and Scandinavia in general, the go-to place for hopeful A&R scouts looking for a new sound. And what a sound: gorgeous pop melodies layered over long-forgotten bits of old electronic equipment (no doubt chipped free from the very ice floes that influenced Royksopp's intimate yet sparse soundscapes).

Torbjorn and Svein met at the age of 12, and began their musical career performing Kraftwerk covers for friends. Naming themselves Aedena Cycle, they started creating their own ambient sounds reflecting their love for King Crimson, Brian Eno and the Orb -- influences that would continue to show as their production capabilities matured. Briefly joining Those Norwegians, Torbjorn sharpened his house sensibilities, and then the two friends formed Royksopp, releasing "So Easy" and signed soon thereafter by Wall of Sound. Their debut album, Melody AM, was a slow-burner that generated huge word of mouth and massive sales until even your postman could be heard whistling "Poor Leno" and "Eple." The music was a curious combination of electronica, downtempo, folk and pop -- catchy melodies and fun, uplifting beats that were especially needed in the overly po-faced prog house days at the beginning of the millennium. Global tours followed, accompanied by a number of award-winning and highly creative videos. Remixing requests started to come in, and soon it was possible to detect a specific Royksopp sound: the warmth of a good melody combined with a sparse clinical and washy Arctic rhythmic backdrop. Clearly not wanting to be pigeonholed, their next release, 2005's The Understanding, had a different feel and employed new vocalists (even using their own on some tracks), but their love of prog rock, especially the Alan Parsons Project, could still be clearly detected on tracks like "Alpha Male."

Together with Massive Attack, Portishead broke new ground for the vocal style of Trip-Hop that grew out Bristol in the early 1990s. Their melancholy, rainy-day approach to electronica came as a refreshing alternative the overzealous club music that was being made around that time. Beth Gibbons' passionate vocals offer a surreal complement to producer Geoff Barrow's head-bobbing beats. It could be argued that Portishead make modern blues, given the way both lyrics and mood relate to troubling times.

The daughter of innovative Bossa Nova guitarist Joao Gilberto and Brazilian singer Miucha, Bebel Gilberto definitely has strong musical genes. Graced with a clean, throaty voice that exudes a relaxed sexiness, she is equally comfortable singing in Portuguese and English. Early in her career, she worked with Caetano Veloso, Chico Buarque (her uncle), David Byrne and Arto Lindsay. Lately, techno-sophisticated producer Suba has helped her develop an unpretentious modern sound based around Bossa Nova. Maintaining the primacy of the acoustic guitar in a jazz/bossa style, Gilberto and Suba add cool organ sounds, tight kit drumming, Brazilian percussion, funky basslines, and tasteful Soul horn hooks. Unobtrusive electronic treatments wander in and out, marking Gilberto's recordings with a hip, modern sensibility. Exquisitely warm sensuality well-suited for dance, romance, or ambiance.

Multi-talented musicians Imogen Heap and Guy Sigsworth make up the trip-hop duo Frou Frou. Heap's elastic, resonant voice recalls Beth Orton, while Sigsworth's production finds the organic warmth in the machine -- no small feat. After years of supporting artists like Madonna and Bjork, Sigsworth can claim Frou Frou as his first individual effort, and the creative freedom pays off: their label debut, 2002's Details, is a gem of expansive electronic pop. The duo got a big boost when its song "Let Go" was featured on the soundtrack of the 2004 film Garden State.

In the decade of electronica, outsider Beth Orton emerged as one of the genre's most innovative musicians. With songs that combined the organic acoustic sounds of folk with the beats of trip-hop, Orton's freshman effort Trailer Park served as a languid survey course covering both old and new. The album's success relied as heavily on Orton's beautiful vocal style -- a smoldering haze of soulful passion and exasperated sighs -- as her excellent, grief-stricken lyrics. By her second album, Central Reservation, Orton exchanged the danceable beats for a purer folk sound, with equally hypnotic results.

Swedish electronic duo Koop create flowing and romantic music that is so dense and layered it sounds like a full orchestra of session players. But, in fact, they rely solely on samples, a process that often takes months to complete. Magnus Zingmark and Oscar Simonsson first began making music together in the mid-1990s after meeting in Uppsala, Sweden. After a move to Stockholm in 1997, the duo released their debut album, Sons Of Koop. In 2002, their second album, Waltz For Koop, catapulted them into the forefront of the "nu-jazz" scene. The group subsequently released Koop Islands in 2007, an album that transported its listeners back to the dinner jazz sound of the 1930s and '40s.

Coming out of the post-Portishead boom of female-led trip-hop acts, Morcheeba joined the party in 1996. Inspired more by pop music than moody atmospherics, they snared American ears with "Trigger Hippie." While not completely straying from the "dark beats + spy themes = Trip-Hop" formula on 1998's sophomore outing, Big Calm, Morcheeba made the wise move to turn the spotlight towards the sultry whisperings of singer Sky Edwards and the exceptional guitar of Ross Godfrey. The resulting funk-fueled fire of 2000's Fragments Of Freedom may not have been a huge success, but it paved the way for the group's more cohesive 2002 effort, Charango. 2005's The Antidote relies on a sound that is more orchestrated pop than synthetic dance music.

In the wake of the Gotan Project's global success in 2003, fusing tango with electronica became, to put it mildly, fashionable. But Argentina's Federico Aubele came by his tang-tronica credentials honestly; the guitarist and producer is a native of Buenos Aires, and he fell in love with Astor Piazzolla's innovative tango early on. (Aubele calls Piazzolla the quintessential Buenos Aires musician, as tightly bound to the city as Frank Sinatra is to New York.) When he tried his hand at sampling and mixing, the stars aligned: He sent a few demos to Eighteenth Street Lounge Music and immediately impressed them. His debut Gran Hotel Buenos Aires dropped to critical acclaim in 2004, and the single "Postales" became an underground favorite; hipsters around the world chilled out to his aural postcard from the land of gauchos and tangueros. Despite his electronica flirtation, Aubele's never abandoned his acoustic roots. He doesn't use MIDI technology and plays guitar and other live instruments on almost every track he produces. In 2007 he released the eagerly awaited follow-up, Panamericana, which saw him working with singer Natalia Clavier.

In the techno age, setting tango to electronic beats should have been an obvious project --but it wasn't. It took a couple of French beatmakers, Philippe Cohen-Solal and Christoph Mueller, and a handful of Argentinean expats to finally make the connection in 2001. And what an excellent connection it was. The Gotan Project -- named after the Buenos Aires slang for tango -- have quite possibly rescued the genre from those twin ghettos of musical obscurity: classical and world music. The project takes trip-hop's trademark cool and tango's visceral excitement and makes them...well...dance together. The sound is hip and slightly tense, and that's its beauty. Singer Christina Vilallonga's voice is a thrilling, guttural instrument, and the marriage of electronics and live instrumentation is a testament to the skill of the musicians involved. Overused words like "seamless" and "organic" were made for this project. Gotan are not just for 21st century hipsters; we'd wager that any Buenos Aires resident circa 1930 would hear the band and simply get it.

London's rising chill-out supastars Tom Findlay and Andy Cato are equipped with a "beats 'n' brass" sound that tones down the cheekiness of Tummy Touch label owner and friend Tim "Love" Lee. Revealing a jazz-tinted collection of disco, funk and house nuances that glitter like the contents of a treasure chest, Groove Armada prove that the gritty can shine. Solidly fragmented mellowness erupts in slow motion on arrangements decorated with delectable melodic musings from trombones, flutes, trumpets, pianos and synths. Choice vocal samples add to the sweet sensuality of mixes that send a warm rush through your body like a smile from a visually-appealing stranger.
This superb vibraphonist crafted a winning mix of soul, world music and jazz that rode high on the jazz and R&B charts throughout the 1970s and '80s. Roy Ayers started out as a solid hard bop musician, but he quickly upped the soul and disco elements of his sound, and his sophisticated music became an uptown pop staple of disco-era black America. Even while Ayers was gaining attention for such R&B hits as "Running Away," "Hot" and "In the Dark," his overall reputation kept growing, particularly in the U.K., and he's now considered a pioneer of Britain's acid jazz movement. His work is also widely sampled by American hip-hop producers, and his juicy crossover albums are now as widely available as his soul jazz efforts should be. Ayers has earned his place in pop history as one of the few modern jazz musicians who blueprinted a pop sound with his band, not with his instrument.

Injecting gelatinous doses of blues and jazz effects into gloomy, hip-hop-oriented Drum 'n' Bass and Trip-Hop concoctions, this Brazil native, based in Brighton, brings a clouded world traveler's vision to your speakers.
These Athens natives sound like they've followed a tour or two and picked up valuable information on group improvisation in the process. Live and programmed beats derived from Drum 'n' Bass and Progressive House drive uplifting, exploratory, frenetic guitar and meandering keyboards to create next-level jam rock. Their group intuition allows them to pull off improvised songs as if they were well rehearsed. The group now resides in Northern California and has a busy touring schedule as one of the premier jam bands around. Recorded at various shows throughout 2001, their 2002 release Seasons 01 captures these moments of spontaneity on songs that the band had often never played (and in some cases never played again).

Francophiles take note: here's the latest intelligent electronic pop outfit
a la Air, Les Rythmes Digitales and the Belgian-based Hooverphonic. Aptly
placed vocal snippets lounge over dreamy arrangements made up of nature
sounds; gentle, sparkling rhythms; electronic distortion; sweet swells and
spiky sound effects. The work of Stephan Haeri, Christophe Hetier (formerly
known as DJ Anti-Pop) and Fabrice Dumont of Autour de Lucie fame,
Telepopmusik's serene, smart sounds reached a whole new echelon of listeners
beyond the clubbing set when Mitsubishi set their song "Breathe" to an SUV
commercial in 2003.

Deep House guru, downtempo master and Acid Jazz fiend Mark Farina can set the proper mood in any lazy listening environment. Presently based in San Francisco, Farina began his DJ career at age 15, honing his skills by studying the moves of Chicago House masters. Responsible for spearheading the Mushroom Jazz record series and mixing it up on his San Francisco Sessions debut on Om Records, Farina makes appearances on various other compilations from labels all over the world including the much-respected United DJs of America collection.
Hailing from Iceland, indie folk songstress Emiliana Torrini makes sweet music that evokes hypnotic childhood memories. Backed by a delicate mix of acoustic guitar and sparse drum rhythms, Torrini's breathless vocal delivery is reminiscent of fellow Icelander Bjork. Raised in the town of Kopavogur, Torrini worked in her father's Italian restaurant and attended opera school during her teenage years. In 1999, she released her debut album, Love in the Time of Science, produced by Tears For Fears' Roland Orzabal. In 2002, famed Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson asked Torrini to voice the final music for The Two Towers (a gig that Bjork was set to do before backing out due to pregnancy). Three years later, Torrini released Fisherman's Woman. Moving away from the trip-hop beats of her debut, the album showcases her otherworldly vocals in soft layers of downtempo folk, a style she continued to work with on 2008's Me and Armini.

Of all the young Acid Jazz groups out there, Galactic may be the only one you could unashamedly mention in the same sentence as the Meters, Maceo Parker and Jimmy McGriff. This New Orleans band owes everything to 1970s Jazz-Funk -- a fact they embrace rather than run from. Masters of laying down solid grooves and working them over, these instrumentals and vocal tracks will get your whole body moving faster than a swarm of radioactive bees. Galactic are good enough to be put alongside Jimmy Smith and Joey DeFrancesco on the homage to the Hammond B-3 called Organ-ized.

Both as a solo artist and an early member of Massive Attack, this Bristolian legend is a pioneer of the Trip-Hop genre. Psychologically complex and socially sensitive, Tricky's individual style set a blueprint for hip-hop innovators and electronica trend-setters alike. Tortuous melodies and downtrodden vocals wallow in stagnant pools of contaminated synths as beats crack like turn-of-the-century windows made of imperfect glass. Providing a dingy lens by which one can peer into the depths of the urban soul, Tricky's sample-heavy soundscapes magnify qualities of corruption and debauchery that color the human experience.

L.A.'s Bitter:Sweet shake up a downtempo cocktail of bossa nova, lounge jazz, '60s soundtracks, vintage French pop and just a smidgen of space-age bachelor pad music. That recipe has made them a staple on screens big and small: the duo's music has been featured everywhere from Grey's Anatomy to The Devil Wears Prada and from Law and Order to Victoria's Secret advertisements. The group came together when singer Shana Halligan responded to a Craigslist post from Kiran Shahani, formerly of the Supreme Beings of Leisure. They released their debut album, The Mating Game, in 2006 and quickly became KCRW favorites for their suave blend of swinging, '60s-driven cool and laid-back breakbeats. The following year found 21st Century hepcats like Thievery Corporation and Nicola Conte putting a clubbier spin on the material. In 2008, the duo returned with Drama. The blend of bitter and sweet remained the same, but with more emphasis on filmic strings and Parisian cafe ambiance, their tall, cool drink of pouty poise was even smoother.

The Art of Noise were one of the most revolutionary sounds in early '80s dance music. They created complex, confounding collages of every genre in the spirit of early hip-hop, but their breaks were undisciplined, unwieldy and uncanny. As jazz horn blasts collided with cartoonish voices and crushing Industrial beats with syrupy synthesizers, their music seemed as much a mockery of music as a brilliant example of it. (The accompanying video for “Close [to the Edit]” had them destroying a grand piano with a chainsaw.) Their glib, catchy loops and samples made for perfect dance music, despite their comic value. They continued to evolve through the decade, creating sounds for both the dance floor and chill room until they disbanded at the turn of the decade. They recently reunited to pay homage to French composer Claude Debussy -- who evolved a formative approach to harmony -- and they continue to be a major sampling source and inspiration for sampladelic music.

A much-lauded DJ and beatmaker from the San Francisco Bay Area, DJ Shadow recorded several singles in the early '90s but it was his debut LP, 1996's Endtroducing..., that really took the world by storm. Incorporating heavy drums, hyper-obscure samples, and moody atmospherics, his unique soundscapes found praise from a wide variety of listeners and critics. He's chronicled his early work on Preemptive Strike (1998) and has also recorded extensively with his crew Solesides (now known as Quannum) which includes Blackalicious and Latyrx. Shadow also contributed to the U.N.K.L.E. album, and helped put together several compilations, including Guns, Cars, and Sitars and Schoolhouse Funk. In 2000 he provided the score to the homelessness documentary Dark Days and was featured on Solesides Greatest Bumps. Shadow's long-awaited new full-length, The Private Press, dropped in 2002.

German indie producer Ulrich Schnauss mixes lush instrumentation and thick-layered synthesizers for a sound that lies somewhere between '80s dream pop and modern shoegazer. Hailing from the small German town of Kiel, Schnauss began making music and sending demos anonymously to famed German label CCO. These songs would eventually make up his debut album, Far Away Trains Passing By. Schnauss' meticulous song construction is born out of a love for such indie artists as My Bloody Valentine and the Cocteau Twins.

From Belgium, this ambient pop/electronica group initially was led by Liesje Sandonis on their debut, A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular. Since then, they have been guided by the voice of Geike Arnaert. Hooverphonic have the depth and minor quality of Portishead and their heavy use of ambient synth is comparable to the new age sound of Enya. Their hit single "2 Wicky," built around a loop from the Isaac Hayes' classic version of "Walk On By," falls nicely in the Trip-Hop category, yet doesn't represent their rock-driven sound evidenced on such albums as the 2000 release The Magnificent Tree.

A skilled producer influenced by beat styles belonging to such god-like hip-hop figures as DJ Premier and Prince Paul, DJ Cam creates atmospheres to intensify your most chill moods. Widely unappreciated in his country of origin, this scene-sensitive Frenchman is celebrated in the Mo' Wax-watching sectors in America, the U.K. and Japan. Bearing an atmospheric hip-hop sound rounded out with plenty of well-chosen samples, refined breaks, vinyl scratches and engaging emcees, Cam is part of the circle made up of like-minded stylists as DJ Shadow, DJ Krush and La Funk Mob. Aspects of jazz and dub deepen his diverse head-bobbing style, serving to further mystify the hip-hop phenomenon.

French downtempo house composer Stephane Pompougnac is an electronic musician who first began deejaying in and around Paris in the 1990s at clubs including Le Queen, Privilege and Diable des Lombards. A chance encounter with a Paris hotel owner brought international fame to Pompougnac when he was asked to mix a downtempo-lounge compilation. Thus was born the hugely popular Hotel Costes mix series. In 2003, Pompougnac took his talents into the studio and created his first original album, Living on the Edge. The stylish, lounge-inspired album made Pompougnac a chill-out star. He continues to produce and mix the Hotel Costes series as well as release his own original material.

Under the guise of Acid Jazz, Incognito deliver a polished blend of electronic grooves, Neo-Soul vocals, and elaborate studio orchestration. They fuse harmonies often recalling the jazzy soul of Stevie Wonder (whose "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing" was a hit for them in 1992) with a mix of hip-hop, Funk, Electro, and Latin rhythms. Sax and trumpet work can tend toward pedestrian Smooth Jazz, but the rare instrumental can find them stretching out. Ultimately, though, this is party music, and is equally appropriate for the dance floor or the bedroom.

Berlin's Jazzanova are standard bearers for the jazzier, more soulful side of electronic music. The group formed in 1995, bringing together six musicians -- Alexander Barck, Claas Brieler, Jurgen von Knoblauch, Roskow Kretschmann, Stefan Leisering and Axel Reinemer -- who shared deep backgrounds in soul, jazz, funk and boogie. Whereas early releases tended towards downtempo and broken beat, fusing live and sampled instruments with meticulously programmed grooves, Jazzanova have steadily moved towards a live band feel; 2008's Of All the Things was their most old-school record yet. But Jazzanova have kept pushing dance music forward via their record labels Jazzanova Compost Records (JCR, a collaboration with Munich's Compost label) and Sonar Kollektiv. The latter label has hosted many of the most acclaimed underground artists of the '00s, including Recloose, Roland Appel, Soulphiction, Ame and Robag Wruhme.

In a 2003 interview, Koushik compared his music to breathing, which makes sense: while nominally hip-hop in its use of samples and drum breaks, Koushik's work seems to pulse like a bellows, drawing in energy from vintage soul and folk records, and issuing out a yellow-and-pink fog of blurry harmonies. (Imagine the Beach Boys, chopped and screwed, and then photographed through a Vaseline-smeared lens.) Growing up in Dundee, Ontario, Koushik began DJing and recording at 14 -- in fact, he says, he'd been sneaking down to the basement to play with his brother's turntables since he was eight -- but it wasn't until years later that he'd let anyone listen to his creations. His debut single appeared in 2001, followed by a string of singles (collected in 2005 as Be With) for Stones Throw; in 2008 he followed up with Out My Window, his album debut. While the record's beats recalled hip-hop mavericks like Madlib, J Dilla and DJ Shadow, his lush harmonies had more in common with folk-obsessives like Caribou and Four Tet. Unsurprisingly, he has collaborated with both.

Each blissed-out release from Grammy award-winning producer William Orbit is like an invitation on a journey where the ultimate destination is an intimate meeting between the listener and the universe. Although he is widely regarded as one of the most well-known purveyors of ambient-related dance styles, the elusive Orbit accepts the limelight with modest reluctance. Responsible for introducing Madonna to the future of mainstream music with her critically-acclaimed 1998 release Ray of Light and introducing another facet of Brit-Pop favorite Blur's sound on 13, Orbit's list of production credits are as distinguished as they are long. As a solo artist, this chill-out master constructs boundless soundscapes sewn together with lavish strings and sweet moves to create a trance-inducing experience that is cosmically epic, awe-inspiring and spiritually enlightening.

Far from nightlife's usual excesses, you won't find Mr. Scruff advocating anything more dangerous than dancing whilst sipping a warm cup of tea. Having long called London's Ninja Tune home, he's less the label's court jester than he is his footed-pajama-wearing, snack-time storyteller. That's not to say that his music, meticulously stitched together out of vintage funk, soul, reggae, rock and folk, and kitted out with good-natured sound effects and squirrelly electronic touches, is lightweight. Scruff, aka Manchester's Andy Carthy, knows what gives funk its oomph, and his albums and DJ sets both show an unusual facility for a danceable groove. But favoring psychedelic touches over the scowls of his comrades in trip-hop, Scruff's life-affirming music stands in a category of its own: This is the stuff of all-ages outdoor festivals (preferably, attended in wackily printed Wellies). And his easygoing collages work equally well in more sedate settings -- no wonder the jack-of-all-trades sells his own line of tea in his spare time. This is as cozy as electronic music gets.

A few turntablists aside, DJing has always been as much about what you play as how you play it. And Philly-by-way-of-Florida DJ/ producer Diplo, perhaps more than any other artiste from this decade, is adept at locating the sonic correlations between culturally disparate sounds. His sets effortlessly oscillate between Rio de Janeiro's favela funk, U.K. grime, Baltimore club music, Southern crunk, indie-electro and other as-yet-unclassifiable music. The aim is to get feet on the dance floor, but the effort also rewards listeners with new contexts for appreciating music. Diplo has blurred the line between artist and critic, and his mixes bring up questions of propriety, exploitation and the relationship between the third world producers and first world consumers. His debut, 2003's Florida, was a bit of a tepid redux of late-1990s DJ Shadow-influenced trip-hop, but his 2005's Fabric mix is excellent.

Bridging the gap between electronica and rock, Andre Barlow and Lousie Rhodes from Manchester, England formed the group in 1994. However their style is a more free, dark, and experimental with screeching guitar work and D'n'B teasing rhythms.
