Whitford released an EP and single on his own in 2001, before adding guitarist Tim Hoey and drummer Mitchell Scott to a live lineup in 2003. Whitford played all the instruments on Cut Copy's 2004 debut LP, <i>Bright Like Neon Love</i>, but teamed up with French producer Philippe Zdar (Cassius, Motorbass and MC Solaar), and the album helped spawn a worldwide electro-house movement.
