George Strait is less an elder statesman of country than a pure force of nature. The Texas-born traditionalist continues to enjoy an unbelievable run of success that spans two decades of country music. Strait grew up on a ranch, so his cowboy hat is no affectation. He gravitated to music early on, playing rock in high school and switching to country during a stint in the military. He and his band Ace in the Hole played honky tonks and dancehalls throughout Texas in the 1970s, releasing two independent albums and honing a sound that combined lean Honky-Tonk and hard-hitting Western Swing. Strait scored a major Nashville deal in the early '80s and immediately appeared on the country charts. Amazingly, he has stayed at the top of the charts through the turn of the century, with shelves of gold and platinum records to his credit. Although he records some of his own material, he has relied on top-notch songwriters such as Sonny Throckmorton and Jim Lauderdale throughout his career. Strait has done what few artists have: he's remained wildly successful through a number of sweeping changes that have beset country music, playing primarily in a traditional style.

Merle Haggard is one of the most influential country music Singer-Songwriters since Hank Williams. His career began when he snuck backstage to meet country legend Lefty Frizzell as a teen. Impressed by his songs, Frizzell refused to go back on stage until Haggard went up and sang a song -- to a warm audience response. Along with Buck Owens and Wynn Stewart, he was a pioneer of the Bakersfield country music scene in the 1960s, a working-class legend who sang torn and frayed narratives. Haggard's deep and throaty vocal style was influenced by Stewart's phrasing, his music touched by a subtle mix of blues, jazz, folk and Western Swing. Haggard's quality of songwriting has remained consistently ahead of the rest; country music wouldn't be the same without him.

This Texas band has become an institution dedicated to preserving the legacy of big band Western Swing. Like any large band that has survived more than twenty-five years of touring and recording, Asleep at the Wheel have a fluid lineup centered around anchor/leader Ray Benson. The quintessential frontman, Benson has a booming bass voice and is a nimble, inventive guitarist who's well versed in Swing, jazz and country. The band's trademark sound includes fiddles, horns, steel guitars and piano, all playing tightly arranged pieces and trading blazing solos. The Wheel, as they're known to their fans, have recorded numerous albums on their own and have worked with most of the big names in country music.

In the late 1960s a lot of bands in Michigan were growing their hair long and throwing down thunderous rock 'n' roll music that would incite riots and call for revolution. Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen were not one of these bands. They were perhaps one of the only Michigan bands at that time to dive deep into country music's fertile family tree and hone a trademark sound within varying genres such as a Western Swing Revival that drew heavily on the influence of Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys as well as catchy country rock songs that put Poco and even the Eagles to shame on a good night. They also dabbled in a bit of that old-time rock 'n' roll, predating such pub rock acts as Brinsley Schwarz and Rockpile. Perhaps feeling out of place among Motor City's madmen, the band relocated to San Francisco and won over fans of Bay Area bands like New Riders of the Purple Sage and even the Grateful Dead, who put out some outstanding twangy rock in the late '60s and early '70s.

Riders In the Sky have been paying tribute (in their own tongue-in-cheek manner) to singing cowboys since 1977. By approximating the old-timey cowpoke sounds of Gene Autry and Roy Rogers, the band has gained a large following of Traditional Country enthusiasts, as well as folks who enjoy the Riders' novel approach to Americana. Here we find Ranger Doug and his dudes celebrating the holidays the country way with their ranch-swing roster of standard country songs, Southern-fried Christmas carols and trademark folkie Gospel.

Dan Hicks started out as a drummer, eventually filling that seat for the legendary San Francisco psychedelic act the Charlatans. Hicks left the Charlatans to pursue a solo career, issuing his first record in 1969. Using acoustic instruments almost exclusively, Hicks fashioned a sound that he's used as a template for his career so far. His music is a genial, breezy blend of jazz, folk, Swing and Tin Pan Alley pop that easily evokes artists as different as Hoagy Carmichael, Django Reinhardt and Hank Williams. Hicks wraps his elastic tenor vocals around slyly funny songs that are bolstered by subtly brilliant playing.

As the influence and record sales of the "hat acts" that sprung up in the wake of Garth Brooks' success began to wane, Nashville bet the farm on this band of unlikely country music saviors. BR5-49, named after a phone number on a sketch from the television show Hee Haw, honed their combination of Western swing, hard honky-tonk and traditional country by playing for tips in a Western wear shop/nightclub in the seedy Lower Broadway neighborhood of Nashville. The group eventually caught on, and soon after there were lines around the block for its performances. It was their original songs, crisp ensemble playing and vintage country look that got them signed. They haven't had anything resembling a hit yet, but they have been nominated for a Grammy while building a large and devoted fan base.

Frequent appearances on country cable shows, TNN, and the Grand Ole Opry -- as well as a grueling tour schedule that keeps these guys in a bus most of the year -- have not translated to chart success for Wylie & the Wild West. But that's no indication of the quality of their music. Traditional Swing and Cowboy songs are sung in a rich and friendly voice with crisp, masterful backing and a minimum of Nashville schmaltz. But Wylie's specialty is his yodel, a twisting, beautiful sound that's hard to find in country music today. A raunched-out bluesy duet with Merle Haggard piles on more credibility.

Wayne Hancock is as free of country music cliches as tornado-caught tumbleweed is free of the earth. Although he's a relatively young singer, he croons with an old voice and, one feels, a heart and soul weary from hard travel and an early, enduring intimacy with loss. Musically, he is a direct descendent of the Western hard bop style of Bob Wills. You can swing dance to this music with abandon, or you can lose your soul to it if you're not careful. All throughout, Hancock's voice rides high above his rapturous "swingabilly" music, imparting the hard-won wisdom of a world-weary soul. There is no metaphor for greatness as great as that voice -- let that be recommendation enough for Wayne Hancock.

Kirchen tours relentlessly, and fans come out again and again to see him spin out his dazzling, knuckle-busting guitar lines. He is also a favorite sideman to discerning artists like Nick Lowe, Hoyt Axton and Tom Russell.

Hardcore Texas Country with equal parts Honky-Tonk and Western Swing and no Alt Country BS ruining everything. Burleson's reedy voice is fitted perfectly to the sweeping, jazz-flavored arrangements. The late, great Doug Sahm makes an appearance, trading country boogie riffs with an expert pedal-steel player and the requisite string section.

You know how some people claim that music is their calling and then you find out that they sing Frank Sinatra's "My Way" at the karaoke bar on Tuesday nights? Well with waify chanteuse Circe Link, the musical calling was the real deal. She woke up one morning with a song in her head that wouldn't go away until she sat down and worked it out. And then another song popped into her head while she was driving home from her day job. And then another and another. So three albums later the lady has honed her craft so flawlessly that listening to her delightfully anachronistic blend of western swing-influenced vocal jazz, you begin to wonder if her musical heart is haunted by the ghosts of Spade Cooley and Patsy Cline.

Amazingly, this Texan did not become a professional musician until the age of 60, when he retired from his job as an auditor for the Texas National Guard. Walser's music is very much a product of Texas, anachronistically blending Western Swing, cowboy songs, hard Honky-Tonk and Yodeling. The tall, rotund singer has an amazing vocal range and humorous stage manner.

If you need one place to find all your non-rock string plucking needs, listen to this cowboy master. Rich O'Brien has mastered Django-influenced Western Swing, neo Classical, and Spanish guitar. It's to his credit that he holds all these different styles together with a heaping helping of cowboy charm. If you are having a picnic under open skies, this is your soundtrack. Don't know who's on the fiddle, but their licks are as tasty and fresh as cold chicken and lemonade.

After his Atlanta-based Alternative Rock band IBM broke up, front man Ben Friedman recruited bass man Keith Perissi, drummer Francis Ferran, and guitar guy Jim Lavender to form this Roots Rock quartet. Their up-tempo Rockabilly Revival and Western Swing Revival-inspired Americana brought the band a large cult following, and they released two albums following their break up in 1995. Unlike most Retro bands, this quartet did more than recreate a sound: they also managed to write songs with relevant pop sensibility and then filter them through old tones and vintage sounding amplifiers.

These cats approximate old-timey Honky-Tonk sounds that would make Hank Williams wake up and tell his grandson, "No, sonny! Yer doin' it all wrong! Listen to these fellers, they got the right idea!" And they do. Hillbilly Idol fuse analog-sounding production with old lap steel tones that seem to drip like honey over weeping fiddle swipes. Their songs are sincere, rustic accounts of lost love and unrequited adoration that melt tears into beers, and their close vocal harmonies sound almost as rich as those of Charlie and the late, great Ira Louvin. Perfectly pastoral music that's good enough to throw on a mix tape for the bumpkin that broke your heart.

Paul Burch has played with Lambchop as well as with Vic Chesnutt on his album Salesman and Burnadette. Along with Paul Niehaus (Lampchop's steel player), Burch and the WPA Ball Club crank out some of the sweetest Honky-Tonk/Western Swing-tinged Alt Country since Rosie Flores. His songs carry a vision of pastoral living and loving in modern times. Niehaus gets his lapsteel to weep and meow as Burch croons in high, lonesome, Hank-like inflections. Perfect music for salting up a cold one with your own tears.

Mid-tempo Rocka-hillbilly that's pickled in the Western Swing Revival vinegar that the kids with all that goop in their hair seem to dig these days. This skilled band of upright bass-slapping good-ol' boys adhere to a tried-and-true recipe, similar to what Big Sandy was doing before he began infusing his own style of songwriting with a pre-existing formula. These vocals seem naturally nasal, with just a little bit of affected twang.
