George Strait is less an elder statesman of country than a pure force of nature. The Texas-born traditionalist continues to enjoy an unbelievable run of success that spans two decades of country music. Strait grew up on a ranch, so his cowboy hat is no affectation. He gravitated to music early on, playing rock in high school and switching to country during a stint in the military. He and his band Ace in the Hole played honky tonks and dancehalls throughout Texas in the 1970s, releasing two independent albums and honing a sound that combined lean Honky-Tonk and hard-hitting Western Swing. Strait scored a major Nashville deal in the early '80s and immediately appeared on the country charts. Amazingly, he has stayed at the top of the charts through the turn of the century, with shelves of gold and platinum records to his credit. Although he records some of his own material, he has relied on top-notch songwriters such as Sonny Throckmorton and Jim Lauderdale throughout his career. Strait has done what few artists have: he's remained wildly successful through a number of sweeping changes that have beset country music, playing primarily in a traditional style.

Merle Haggard is one of the most influential country music Singer-Songwriters since Hank Williams. His career began when he snuck backstage to meet country legend Lefty Frizzell as a teen. Impressed by his songs, Frizzell refused to go back on stage until Haggard went up and sang a song -- to a warm audience response. Along with Buck Owens and Wynn Stewart, he was a pioneer of the Bakersfield country music scene in the 1960s, a working-class legend who sang torn and frayed narratives. Haggard's deep and throaty vocal style was influenced by Stewart's phrasing, his music touched by a subtle mix of blues, jazz, folk and Western Swing. Haggard's quality of songwriting has remained consistently ahead of the rest; country music wouldn't be the same without him.

This Texas band has become an institution dedicated to preserving the legacy of big band Western Swing. Like any large band that has survived more than twenty-five years of touring and recording, Asleep at the Wheel have a fluid lineup centered around anchor/leader Ray Benson. The quintessential frontman, Benson has a booming bass voice and is a nimble, inventive guitarist who's well versed in Swing, jazz and country. The band's trademark sound includes fiddles, horns, steel guitars and piano, all playing tightly arranged pieces and trading blazing solos. The Wheel, as they're known to their fans, have recorded numerous albums on their own and have worked with most of the big names in country music.

Bill Haley combined Western Swing with R&B and took Rock 'n' Roll to the top of the charts in 1955. "Rock Around the Clock" was a little known B-side that took off when it was featured in the first (and best) juvenile delinquent picture, The Blackboard Jungle. While Haley's Western Swing material was actually wilder than his cutting edge Rock 'n' Roll, he is definitely an artist deserving more respect. He quickly went out of favor when other early rockers -- such as Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis -- were able to throw a whole lot of charisma in with their Afro-billy sounds. Haley rocked but he looked like a square while he was doing it.

In the late 1960s a lot of bands in Michigan were growing their hair long and throwing down thunderous rock 'n' roll music that would incite riots and call for revolution. Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen were not one of these bands. They were perhaps one of the only Michigan bands at that time to dive deep into country music's fertile family tree and hone a trademark sound within varying genres such as a Western Swing Revival that drew heavily on the influence of Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys as well as catchy country rock songs that put Poco and even the Eagles to shame on a good night. They also dabbled in a bit of that old-time rock 'n' roll, predating such pub rock acts as Brinsley Schwarz and Rockpile. Perhaps feeling out of place among Motor City's madmen, the band relocated to San Francisco and won over fans of Bay Area bands like New Riders of the Purple Sage and even the Grateful Dead, who put out some outstanding twangy rock in the late '60s and early '70s.

Pushing the envelope of western swing was what Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys were all about. Although many enthusiasts give props to the man and his band for the birth of this bygone genre, they cannot take full credit. But what they can accept accolades for is the contemporized popularity and accessibility of the sound. By adding a big band and altering the formula of swing to include jazz sensibilities over the simple pop arrangements, they got people out on the dance floor in droves. Just having the ambition to change what was once a strict structure in the face of purists is commendable, but the fruition of that vision is what made them true musical heroes. They also helped pave the way for what became the stripped-down and grittier roadhouse honky-tonk sound.

Dan Hicks started out as a drummer, eventually filling that seat for the legendary San Francisco psychedelic act the Charlatans. Hicks left the Charlatans to pursue a solo career, issuing his first record in 1969. Using acoustic instruments almost exclusively, Hicks fashioned a sound that he's used as a template for his career so far. His music is a genial, breezy blend of jazz, folk, Swing and Tin Pan Alley pop that easily evokes artists as different as Hoagy Carmichael, Django Reinhardt and Hank Williams. Hicks wraps his elastic tenor vocals around slyly funny songs that are bolstered by subtly brilliant playing.

Born in Waco, Tex., in 1925, country star Hank Thompson's success and career longevity is frankly amazing, given the fickle nature of popular music. From the late 1940s through the 1970s he was consistently in the country charts, landing nearly fifty songs in the Top-10 or Top-20. The key to Thompson's longevity lies in his songwriting and his band's consistent sound. Thompson's songs often cast an unflinching eye on the drinking and carousing honky-tonk lifestyle, as exemplified by his signature song "The Wild Side of Life" as well as "Honky-Tonk Girl" and "Six-Pack to Go." Thompson and his band the Brazos Valley Boys created a prototypical honky-tonk/western swing hybrid sound, with twin fiddles, steel guitar, piano, bass and drums joining his rough-hewn baritone vocals to form a streamlined sonic juggernaut that was both hard-hitting and musically sophisticated. Thompson stuck by his sound over the years, and it has never really gone out of style. For much of his career he maintained a brutal touring schedule of over 200 nights a year on the road. Thompson released a record of brand new songs in 2000. Not bad for a 75-year-old man. He passed away in hospice on November 6, 2007 at the age of 82 after being diagnosed with lung cancer.

Wayne Hancock is as free of country music cliches as tornado-caught tumbleweed is free of the earth. Although he's a relatively young singer, he croons with an old voice and, one feels, a heart and soul weary from hard travel and an early, enduring intimacy with loss. Musically, he is a direct descendent of the Western hard bop style of Bob Wills. You can swing dance to this music with abandon, or you can lose your soul to it if you're not careful. All throughout, Hancock's voice rides high above his rapturous "swingabilly" music, imparting the hard-won wisdom of a world-weary soul. There is no metaphor for greatness as great as that voice -- let that be recommendation enough for Wayne Hancock.

As the influence and record sales of the "hat acts" that sprung up in the wake of Garth Brooks' success began to wane, Nashville bet the farm on this band of unlikely country music saviors. BR5-49, named after a phone number on a sketch from the television show Hee Haw, honed their combination of Western swing, hard honky-tonk and traditional country by playing for tips in a Western wear shop/nightclub in the seedy Lower Broadway neighborhood of Nashville. The group eventually caught on, and soon after there were lines around the block for its performances. It was their original songs, crisp ensemble playing and vintage country look that got them signed. They haven't had anything resembling a hit yet, but they have been nominated for a Grammy while building a large and devoted fan base.

Frequent appearances on country cable shows, TNN, and the Grand Ole Opry -- as well as a grueling tour schedule that keeps these guys in a bus most of the year -- have not translated to chart success for Wylie & the Wild West. But that's no indication of the quality of their music. Traditional Swing and Cowboy songs are sung in a rich and friendly voice with crisp, masterful backing and a minimum of Nashville schmaltz. But Wylie's specialty is his yodel, a twisting, beautiful sound that's hard to find in country music today. A raunched-out bluesy duet with Merle Haggard piles on more credibility.

Vassar Clements was one of the most innovative fiddle players on the bluegrass circuit. In the early 1950s he cut his teeth playing with picking legend Bill Monroe. Clements soon realized that he wanted to try his hand at other types of music. He began throwing in different ingredients into his musical melting pot. By fusing jazz with country music, Clements honed his skills in forty years time to become one of the most sought-after session musicians. One can hear his finesse on albums by Hank Williams, Vince Gill, Bonnie Raitt, Paul McCartney, and (even) The Monkees.

Paul Burch has played with Lambchop as well as with Vic Chesnutt on his album Salesman and Burnadette. Along with Paul Niehaus (Lampchop's steel player), Burch and the WPA Ball Club crank out some of the sweetest Honky-Tonk/Western Swing-tinged Alt Country since Rosie Flores. His songs carry a vision of pastoral living and loving in modern times. Niehaus gets his lapsteel to weep and meow as Burch croons in high, lonesome, Hank-like inflections. Perfect music for salting up a cold one with your own tears.

Rex Allen, a.k.a. the "Arizona Cowboy" was Hollywood's last Singing Cowboy. He starred in almost twenty musical western movies for Republic Studios between 1950 and 1954 (many of which co-starred Slim Pickens). His acting spawned a recording career that lasted through the end 1950s. It was around this time that the Singing Cowboys were becoming extinct, and Allen soon found himself singing for Disneyland. His songs are usually lighthearted ditties with subtle Country Swing tones. His old commercial Western crooning has an androgynous appeal in that his voice gets close to falsetto.

Amazingly, this Texan did not become a professional musician until the age of 60, when he retired from his job as an auditor for the Texas National Guard. Walser's music is very much a product of Texas, anachronistically blending Western Swing, cowboy songs, hard Honky-Tonk and Yodeling. The tall, rotund singer has an amazing vocal range and humorous stage manner.

Kirchen is the founder of Western Swing Revival band Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen. An acknowledged "master of the Telecaster," his hard twanging guitar runs define the band's one hit "Hot Rod Lincoln." Kirchen now fronts the stripped-down Too Much Fun, a band that plays a lean, hard rocking blend of Honky-Tonk, Rockabilly, Bakersfield Country and Truckin' Songs. Kirchen tours relentlessly, and fans come out again and again to see him spin out his dazzling, knuckle-busting guitar lines. He is also a favorite sideman to discerning artists like Nick Lowe, Hoyt Axton and Tom Russell.

This San Francisco Roots Rock prodigy was the city's best-kept secret (besides Richard Buckner), until he was discovered and signed to a major label. Jim Campilongo's dexterous and soulful guitar playing waters the rich soil wherein the roots lie. He effortlessly bounces from blues to country to swing to jazz without breaking a sweat, and then somehow tastefully manages to blend them all together in his own unique style. Most of his stuff is upbeat and full of an energetic fretboard fire similar to Xan McCurdy or even Junior Brown. His music with the 10 Gallon Cats is the perfect soundtrack for suiting up and stepping out.

After his Atlanta-based Alternative Rock band IBM broke up, front man Ben Friedman recruited bass man Keith Perissi, drummer Francis Ferran, and guitar guy Jim Lavender to form this Roots Rock quartet. Their up-tempo Rockabilly Revival and Western Swing Revival-inspired Americana brought the band a large cult following, and they released two albums following their break up in 1995. Unlike most Retro bands, this quartet did more than recreate a sound: they also managed to write songs with relevant pop sensibility and then filter them through old tones and vintage sounding amplifiers.

Moonshine soaked, old-time country roots music. Much like The Basement Tapes, Devil In A Woodpile's strength in sound comes from their ability to approximate a historical American sound and infuse their own relevant quirks and characteristics. They incorporate washboard, mouth harp, jug, ukulele, tuba, National steel and arch top guitars, stand-up bass, and other rustic tools of the trade to create a textured far-away sounding record that closely resembles the low fidelity of a 78 rpm platter. This band is made up of members from Bottle Rockets and Waco Brothers. Their blend of hillbilly, bluegrass, ragtime, blues and country mix together in a musical still of fermenting tones that compliment the singer's sour mash affected vocals.

Mid-tempo Rocka-hillbilly that's pickled in the Western Swing Revival vinegar that the kids with all that goop in their hair seem to dig these days. This skilled band of upright bass-slapping good-ol' boys adhere to a tried-and-true recipe, similar to what Big Sandy was doing before he began infusing his own style of songwriting with a pre-existing formula. These vocals seem naturally nasal, with just a little bit of affected twang.

Throaty vocals and Golden Era of Memphis-style musicianship tear it up like the hillbillies used to in this rollicking revivalist fun. With burnin' solos, call and response choruses, and a cool number in their name, these guys are sure to attract all manner of alterna-kids wearing horn-rimmed glasses and Dickies workwear.

If you need one place to find all your non-rock string plucking needs, listen to this cowboy master. Rich O'Brien has mastered Django-influenced Western Swing, neo Classical, and Spanish guitar. It's to his credit that he holds all these different styles together with a heaping helping of cowboy charm. If you are having a picnic under open skies, this is your soundtrack. Don't know who's on the fiddle, but their licks are as tasty and fresh as cold chicken and lemonade.

Veteran honky-tonkers from Austin, Tex. Bandleader Hurd has been mixing up Western Swing, Honky-Tonk, jazz, and various other permutations of American popular music for more than twenty years. His eight-piece band waltzes, rocks and two-steps through a variety of sounds from Spade Cooley to Buck Owens.
