When Hank Williams died at the age of 29, he was already a legendary figure whose legacy would only get larger as his place in the canon of American popular song and popular culture became cemented. Williams grew up in Alabama where he first performed with The Drifting Cowboys as a teenager. The band's regional popularity led his working as a songwriter for Nashville publisher Fred Rose. His first release on MGM Records, "Move It on Over," was a hit. From there Williams meteorically ascended to the top of the Country music heap. He is best known for his nakedly emotional, blues-drenched singing, and stripped down version of proto-Honky Tonk featuring kinetic interplay between the steel guitar and fiddle. A versatile writer, Williams penned Gospel songs like "I Saw the Light," dance numbers ("Jambalaya," "Hey Good Lookin'"), as well as those that evoked loneliness, despair, and betrayal ("Cold Cold Heart," "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry"). His direct, stark lyrics made even up-tempo, seemingly lightweight songs take on an undercurrent of foreboding. Towards the end of his young life, Williams sank deeper and deeper into drug and alcohol abuse. Many who idolized him would emulate this aspect of his life. His "live fast, die young" mythology leaves almost as wide a wake as his music -- he died in the back of a limousine on the way to a gig in 1953.

Pushing the envelope of western swing was what Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys were all about. Although many enthusiasts give props to the man and his band for the birth of this bygone genre, they cannot take full credit. But what they can accept accolades for is the contemporized popularity and accessibility of the sound. By adding a big band and altering the formula of swing to include jazz sensibilities over the simple pop arrangements, they got people out on the dance floor in droves. Just having the ambition to change what was once a strict structure in the face of purists is commendable, but the fruition of that vision is what made them true musical heroes. They also helped pave the way for what became the stripped-down and grittier roadhouse honky-tonk sound.

The Carter Family were the earliest innovators of Bluegrass and country music, writing and arranging many popular, pastoral songs that are still standards today. Before their time, the genre was mostly known for its hayseed, hillbilly instrumental songs. The Carter Family took Celtic and Appalachian folk standards under public domain and rearranged them with a new type of guitar picking and harmonic vocal melodies, creating a new repertoire of lovelorn ballads, blues standards and Gospel hymns. The haunting, ashen vocal harmonies of Alvin Pleasant Delaney Carter (or A.P. as he liked to be called), his wife Sara and sister Maybelle began in 1927 when the trio first formed with Sara on the acoustic guitar or autoharp, A.P. on vocals (and sometimes fiddle) and Maybelle on an acoustic Gibson L-5. Her innovative guitar playing alone set the standard for today's vein of country guitar picking. Among the recordings available here are previously out-of-print cuts from a 1941 performance that was broadcast from the Mexican border with a transmitter too powerful to be legally operated in the U.S.

As a young man living in Oklahoma, Gene Autry worked as a telegraph operator for a railroad. He would often pick at his guitar and write songs to pass the time until a customer heard his voice and advised him to quit his job and try working in radio (that customer was Will Rogers). Autry headed out to New York, and became one of the most famous singing cowboys in the world. He killed over 100 bad guys in black hats on the silver screen and still found time to sing a song after justice was served. Besides singing old Cowboy classics, Autry also penned such Yuletide standards as "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Raindeer," "Here Comes Santa Claus" and "Frosty the Snowman." Whether he was singing Christmas carols or such country hits as "Deep in the Heart of Texas," or "Back in the Saddle Again," his buttery voice delighted children and mothers everywhere for more than sixty years.

Lefty Frizzell (1928-1975) single-handedly changed the way country musicians sing Honky-Tonk. His innovative singing style is solely responsible for the long, drawn-out vowel inflections and smooth phrasing found in the songs of everyone from George Jones and Willie Nelson to George Strait and Randy Travis. Certain country enthusiasts believe he made the Honky-Tonk sound more accessible to a wider audience while still preserving the music's haggard soul. From his first single "If You've Got the Money, I've Got the Time," to his later hits such as "She's Gone Gone Gone," it's easy to understand why this man had such an impact on the singing styles of so many country music legends. At times, his voice sounded like a lonesome Dixieland horn, weeping along with watery pedal steel notes and soft acoustic strums. America's very first tear in a beer was probably the result of someone first listening to the lovelorn laments of Lefty Frizzell.

Any time you have ever heard anyone yodel within the confines of a country music song, you can thank (or blame) the late, great Jimmie Rodgers. He wasn't the first to yodel in a country song, but he was the first to make it famous. Also known as "The Blue Yodeler," Rogers was the first person to gain celebrity status as a country musician. Following a railroad job as brake operator and then as a blackface minstrel performer on the medicine show circuit, he used those tales to fuel his songs, imbuing them with a humbled kind of romance and poetry that the working man could relate to in the late 1920s. And these weren't just the typical "She'll be comin' 'round the mountain" hillbilly songs of the day. Threading elements of gospel, jazz, blues, folk and the cowboy campfire songs of the time, the singer wrote such iconic and influential songs as "T For Texas," "Travelin' Blues," "Waitin' For A Train," "In The Jailhouse Now" and the haunting "T.B. Blues." The latter tune came from true experience, since Rogers was riddled with tuberculosis so badly that they had to put up a cot in the recording studio so he could rest his bleeding lungs in between takes. In 1933, at the young age of 36, Rogers died an untimely death when one of his lungs hemorrhaged -- from the ravages of his tuberculosis -- immediately following what would be his last recording. He was the first artist to be inducted in to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1961, and his influence can still be heard in modern day country and Americana artists.

One of the first modern superstars of country music, Kitty Wells' proto-feminist persona and songwriting paved the way for artists such as Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette. Married to country singer Johnnie Wright, Wells got her start singing with Johnnie and Jack, a very popular duo Wright had with the singer Jack Anglin. After setting out on her own in the 1950s, Wells hit the big time with the song "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky-Tonk Angels," a response to Hank Thompson's "Wild Side of Life." The song was a No. 1 hit and lead to her induction into the Grand Ole Opry. Wells had hit after hit in the charts throughout the '50s and '60s; she was a popular live attraction after the chart success ended in the mid-'70s. Her records combine tough Honky-Tonk with the lush Nashville Sound characterized by sweeping strings and banks of backing vocals.

Their perfectly matched voices blended together with seamless beauty, creating a gut-wrenchingly forlorn sound.
As a member of Roy Acuff's Grand Ole Opry band, Bashful Brother Oswald played a dumb-hick hillbilly character for the sake of comic relief, his slapstick antics and clown-like apparel making him an audience favorite -- but his dobro playing was no joke. During the Depression, Oswald found work playing Hawaiian-style dobro music at a Flint, Mich., radio station. When he was picked up by Acuff later in the decade, he brought with him the weeping, island-flavored style of playing that is one of the defining characteristics of country music. While Oswald was not solely responsible for this sound, his role as a key player in the modern country vocabulary is indisputable. Although he worked mainly as a sideman, he did record a couple of solo efforts on which he sang as well as played, showcasing a taste for old-time Bluegrass and singing in a friendly, weathered voice.

Charlie Poole isn't quite as much of a folk icon as the Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers, yet his influence on old time, bluegrass, country & western and the folk revival is no less considerable. Charlie Poole & the North Carolina Ramblers were one of the most famous string bands in the 1920s, recording nearly 70 sides for Columbia. Unlike the Skillet Lickers and other popular string bands of the day, the Ramblers didn't play the "rowdy hillbilly" card. Inspired in part by ragtime, they employed a finesse and complexity that would go on to influence Bill Monroe and just about every other bluegrass pioneer. John Cohen of the New Lost City Ramblers once tagged the group's sound "mountain chamber music." Poole in particular was a stunning musician, inventing a distinctive three-fingered approach to the banjo. He was also a stunning drinker. As with so many race and hillbilly artists, his popularity began to wane as the Great Depression sunk its teeth into the country. This eventually sent Poole on a marathon bender -- we're talking weeks -- in 1931. Not surprisingly, it killed the man. Although the Ramblers soldiered on, they failed to achieve much commercial success without Poole.

Best known for penning the standard "You Are My Sunshine," Jimmie Davis was a contemporary of/brother in style to Jimmie Rodgers. He plays old-time country songs with a strong blues feel and the pre-requisite yodeling initiated by Rodgers. His earliest songs feature a striking, ribald sense of humor and clever usage of double-entendre. Two terms as Governor of Louisiana and almost eighty years later, Jimmie Davis still performs in public and even has a new record in the works.

Rex Allen, a.k.a. the "Arizona Cowboy" was Hollywood's last Singing Cowboy. He starred in almost twenty musical western movies for Republic Studios between 1950 and 1954 (many of which co-starred Slim Pickens). His acting spawned a recording career that lasted through the end 1950s. It was around this time that the Singing Cowboys were becoming extinct, and Allen soon found himself singing for Disneyland. His songs are usually lighthearted ditties with subtle Country Swing tones. His old commercial Western crooning has an androgynous appeal in that his voice gets close to falsetto.

Throughout the 1940s and '50s, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans reigned as king and queen of not only the box office but also of pretty much anything related to the mythos of the Old West. Their iconic status, while somewhat manufactured by Hollywood, was based on true chemistry between the two actors as well as genuine singing talent. In the '30s, Rogers helped to form the seminal Early Country act the Sons of the Pioneers, and later in his career he was often backed by Spade Cooley and his Buckle-Busters. The duo's main scope of influence was on the screen, but they added several songs to the country music lexicon, "Hi-Yo Silver" and "Happy Trails" being the most widely recognized.

Many a clog dance has been performed to the music of Bascom Lamar Lunsford. Mostly recorded in the 1920s, his Appalachian folk songs often reveal dualities: they are both eerie and festive, lovelorn and romantic. His dexterous banjo picking combines with a crooning mountain voice that can make your hair stand on end. Lunsford was one of the first pastoral musicians to put stories of his life into his songs in a way that captivated listeners and earned him the title among many country and folk music enthusiasts as the king of folk music.
