Willie Nelson was one of the original outlaws of country music, and one of its most influential songwriters. He began playing in the 1960s, writing "Crazy" for Patsy Cline and "Hello Walls" for Faron Young. Nelson's career as a performer flourished in the mid-1970s when he joined up with Waylon Jennings and released the crossover, chart-topping Red Headed Stranger. It was the hit "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" that perpetuated the then-popular image of the longhaired country boy. Willie Nelson had arrived as a country superstar. His folky, nasal inflections carried his voice through many different genres of music, including Western Swing, traditional pop, jazz, Traditional Country, Cowboy country songs, Honky-Tonk, rock 'n' roll, folk music and of course, the blues. Nelson's success lasted until the late 1980s, when some trouble with the IRS landed him in a number of stuffed-crust pizza commercials and a cameo role in the film Half Baked smoking his beloved joints. When the day is done, Nelson can easily be considered a bona fide legend.

Few of the millions and millions of people who bought the Dixie Chicks' major label debut, Wide Open Spaces, knew that the band had already been together for almost a decade, playing the folk and bluegrass circuit. The group was started by champion fiddle player Martie Seidel and her banjo-playing sister Emily Irwin. They went through a succession of lead singers before settling on Natalie Maines in the late-1990s. Maines' country pedigree is impressive, beginning with her father Lloyd Maines, a legendary pedal steel guitarist and studio luminary who has produced and played with Uncle Tupelo, Richard Buckner and Joe Ely, among others. With Maines in place, the Chicks dropped some of their bluegrass trappings in favor of a more conventional New Country sound. The fine-tuning paid off. Wide Open Spaces rocketed to the top of the charts, as did its follow-up Fly. But 2002's aptly titled Home found the girls returning to their bluegrass roots (despite the pop-friendly cover of Stevie Nicks' "Landslide"), which was a well-timed choice considering that by then, country music fans were caught up in old-timey fever thanks to the O Brother, Where Art Thou phenomenon. Top of the World Tour: Live was released in November of 2003, perfectly capturing the unstoppable energy and undying love for country music the Dixie Chicks exude on the live stage. Unfortunately, it was overshadowed and even boycotted by many media outlets after Maines test-drove the First Amendment on a London stage when she stated: "Just so you know, we're ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas." Following the short-lived Dixie Chicks boycott, the band released "I Hope" in 2005, a hit single recorded to garner charity funds for victims of Hurricane Katrina. Their seventh studio album, Taking the Long Way, was released in late May of 2006.

Texas-raised/Nashville-based artist Steve Earle got his start as a young teenager on the vibrant Texas coffeehouse circuit of the 1960s, absorbing the material and emulating the bad habits of his heroes Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clarke. Earle worked on-and-off as a staff songwriter in Nashville before he finally got a decent record deal of his own and released the chart-topping, critically acclaimed Guitar Town in 1986. The record combined twanging, tuneful Country Rock material with tough, unsentimental songwriting that had more in common with Bruce Springsteen than anything Nashville had going on at the time; the fact that it also yielded a couple of Top-10 hits was the icing on the cake. Earle continued to release ambitious Country Rock material, but he failed to repeat the chart success of Guitar Town, and a lifetime of substance abuse finally caught up with him. He wound up in a jail/rehab facility with an uncertain future, a dwindling fan base, and no record deal. He later emerged clean and sober, and proceeded to put out the best, most lucid work of his career -- Train a Comin', I Feel Alright, and El Corazon -- in quick succession. He also started his own record label E-Squared, on which he releases his own records and the material of other artists he admires.

Robert Earl Keen got his start playing country music on his front porch with Lyle Lovett -- they used to sing and play in their underwear to astonished church goers across the street from Keen's house. Lovett even recorded one of Keen's songs (as did Joe Ely, Nanci Griffith, Jill Sobule, Gillian Welch, and Kelly Willis, to name a few). His accessible Country-Folk/Country Rock is rooted in the foolproof formula of good songwriting. Like Kris Kristofferson, Keen writes hypnotizing narratives of lost love and emotional rescue. The music here consists of rich, country-tinged, nostalgic numbers and feel-good Americana anthems that will be pleasantly stuck in your head all day long after listening.

It's hard to know just which has been more influential: Kris Krisofferson's songwriting, or his persona. The songs speak for themselves -- "Sunday Morning Coming Down," "Help Me Make it Through the Night," "Me and Bobby McGee," to name a few. But a lot of people who recognize Kristofferson's grizzled visage don't even know he wrote those numbers, so there must be something else about the guy that resonates. He's the personification of an individualism America often pays lip service to, but rarely respects. A Nashville outsider in the early '70s with his beard, long hair, and left-leaning politics, his rebel stance never seemed like a callow pose. It instead came off as the product of careful deliberation and hard-earned wisdom -- after all, the guy was a Rhodes Scholar. His singing has always been a little too ragged to match the commercial success of those who covered his tunes, but his face and demeanor are perfect for the movies, where he continues to play reserved characters that seem to have deep wells of knowledge and experience.

Whoever dubbed George Jones "King of the Broken Hearts" never heard Townes Van Zandt (1944-1997). His haunting verity made him more than what some considered Americana's own Nick Drake -- Van Zandt was a poet with a burning soul. Although he never had a radio hit, many other country music artists found success with songs "Pancho and Lefty" and "If I Needed You." Though he occasionally delved into more upbeat, light-hearted, bluesy numbers, he is best known for lamenting, wind-swept, road-written songs. Van Zandt had a way of making painfully honest lyrics stick to naturally birthed melodies that attached themselves to the heart of any listener with an ounce of humanity.

Outlaw country pioneer Jerry Jeff Walker is probably most noted for his hit, "Mr. Bojangles." But it was his smooth voice, textured country songs and a reputation for heavy partying that gained him a large cult following. Although he hails from New York, Walker made Austin, Texas, his home in the 1970s, where he befriended the late, great Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark and the Red Headed Stranger, Willie Nelson. Walker got his musical start with the New York City village folk-rock outfit, Circus Maximus. He recorded a couple of albums with them for the Vanguard label before the band split in 1968. Although the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band had more success with Walker's "Mr. Bojangles" in 1971, he was able to enjoy the success of a gold record that he recorded in 1973 with country music loons, The Lost Gonzo Band. Viva Terlingua was his best selling album, capturing the almost suave and twangy swagger as well as the dusty laments that Walker was born to sing.

Murphey has had a long and varied career on the fringes of pop and country. Playing a number of stringed instruments, he initially found success as a songwriter, as artists such as Kenny Rogers and the Monkees covered his work. In Austin, Tex., in the early '70s he was part of a loose scene of singer-songwriters (including Willie Nelson and Jerry Jeff Walker) who were expanding the scope of country music. Throughout this time he steadily released records that found critical acclaim and regional success. Murphey hit pop pay dirt with his 1975 ode to a horse called "Wild Fire" -- it went to the top of the pop charts and made him a star. Since then he has cut a number of popular records of traditional Cowboy songs.

Guy Clark has been sculpting songs out of pure pastoral soul and warm vocals since 1975. His songs are masterworks meticulously crafted with all the patience and detail of a boatmaker (check out the chiseled arrangement on "Boats to Build"). Clark was raised by his grandmother in the West Texas town of Monahans and began writing and singing many of his songs in Spanish. He later moved to Texas and befriended the late, great Townes Van Zandt, who influenced his bluesy, folk style of Americana and country music. Clark is the kind of songwriter that musicians and music lovers understand and admire, while radio programmers just seem to scratch their head and look for the next Billy Ray Cyrus hit to play. Friend Jerry Jeff Walker had a hit with Clark's "L.A. Freeway," a sort of anti-West Coast anthem that he is best known for. Other country artists to cover Clark's songs include George Strait, Johnny Cash, The Highwaymen, David Allen Coe, Vince Gill, and Ricky Skaggs (who had a number one hit with "Heartbroke").

Although Junior Brown is best known for his exceptional country guitar and slide playing, the man can also sing and write songs. His music is like a tour through many of Americana's subgenres. Brown's hearty, beef-eating voice seems to hold these many styles together under his own signature style of writing and playing. He can switch from a lap steel slide to standard six-string chicken picking because of his custom guitar "Big Red." This "guit-steel," as Brown calls it, is a standard electric six-string guitar with a steel attachment. "Big Red" helps Brown play those lightning fast leads and then jump right into steel sliding country. Anyone who has seen a Junior Brown show will tell you the same thing: don't blink, or you might miss something.

Oklahoma-born singer-songwriter Ray Wylie Hubbard started out as a folk artist in the 1960s and later made fast friends with hitmakers Michael Martin Murphey and Jerry Jeff Walker during the nascent years of the '70s' Outlaw Country movement. Walker covered Hubbard's "Up Against the Wall Redneck Mothers" on his popular Viva Terlingua record, securing Hubbard's fate as a cult artist. After disappearing from the music scene for a lengthy period of time, he re-emerged with not only his stellar songwriting intact, but also a distinctly inventive fingering and bottleneck style.

West Texas native Ely is a part of a loose confederation of players and singer-songwriters from around Lubbock whose songs have a mythical, larger-than-life quality to them. Ely, along with Jimmy Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock, was briefly in an acoustic group called the Flatlanders. They released one legendarily obscure record in 1972 that was rereleased to almost ecstatic acclaim in the '90s. When Ely formed his own group in the mid-1970s, they played a hard-driving form of Honky-Tonk music that veered very close to rock. The group capitalized on the more open nature of the Outlaw Country movement and became very popular in Texas, which led to a major-label record deal. The Clash were enamored of Ely's sound and had him come to England to open a tour for them. Ely has never had anything resembling a hit record, but his incendiary live shows and near-constant touring have given him a loyal worldwide cult following.

Onetime character on Adam 12 and yet another member of the country music pantheon who's done time, Johnny Rodriguez flourished in the mid-'70s and well into the '80s playing traditionally-flavored cowboy country. With a nasal, barely-there rasp and lush, mid-tempo backing, he falls somewhere between the smooth Honky-Tonk of Lefty Frizzel and the homegrown Outlaw Country of Willie Nelson.

Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Butch Hancock and Joe Ely all got their start in this obscure yet legendary band. Eschewing the countrypolitan schmaltz of early 1970s Nashville, and exploring a form of country music that took bluegrass, old-timey and bits of psychedelia into account, the Flatlanders recorded music no one was ready for. It wasn't until the alternative country boom of the '90s that they started to receive recognition outside of diehard country obscurists. Gilmore, Hancock and Ely all went on to have critically acclaimed and commercially successful careers, but some of their best work was done with the Flatlanders.

The late great Doug Sahm, who died unexpectedly in early 2000, was a genre-defying, musical badass who was equally at home with country, Psychedelic Rock, R&B, all manner of Tex-Mex, and just about any other category of music you might want to throw at him. He began his career as a child prodigy singer/steel guitar player in the bars and clubs of his native San Antonio, Tex., before he reached his teens. He even sat in with Hank Williams shortly before the country legend kicked the bucket. Sahm formed the Sir Douglas Quintet in the mid-1960s and hit the charts twice with the classic pumping Farfisa sounds of "She's About A Mover" and "Mendocino." After the quintet split, Sahm continued to record prolifically. A formidable blues guitarist and stunningly soulful singer, Sahm's music was inextricably linked to Texas. In the '90s Sahm hooked up with Freddy Fender, Flaco Jiminez, and his old buddy Augie Meyers to form the Texas Tornados, a sort of border rock supergroup that enjoyed quite a bit of success. He will be missed.

No, you didn't step into a time machine and no, you are not listening to a reissue. Austin, Texas' Sunny Sweeney sings old-school honky-tonk, and that shouldn't seem so weird. She shouldn't be an anomaly in her field, but she's one of the only modern-day country singers playing twangy, timeless roadhouse songs. She grew up in a Texas town called Longview, where absorbing the songs of Kitty Wells, Buck Owens, George Jones and other country legends came as easy as breathing air. Having a stepfather and a grandfather who are country musicians surely helped influence her as well. Before singing country music, Sweeney lived in New York City and worked with a comedy improv group. Every time a skit required her to sing, the folks in her troupe encouraged Sweeney to pursue her more obvious gift. So she moved back home to cut an album. Heartbreaker's Hall of Fame showcased her as a brassy and soulful singer as well as a songwriter who puts her living into the narratives of her compositions. But it also reveals a woman who knows her country music so well that she can pick songs not only to cover, but to make her own (dig her life-size version of Audry Auld's "Next Big Nothing").

Beaver Nelson's warm but thin-toned voice sets the stage for his songs. They're not streamlined studio perfect, and that's why his music works so well. It's organic and sometimes endearingly flawed. His version of Roots rock has a definite Midwestern feel in its heartfelt rawness and honesty. He also doesn't necessarily need a pedal steel to warm up his songs, even though they're equal parts country and rock 'n' roll -- traditional back-line and the occasional mandolin do just fine.

Newbury is one of those songwriters who helped change the sound of country music in the late '60s and early '70s -- along with his buddy Kris Kristofferson, Bobby Bare and Don Williams, among others. Newbury cut his musical teeth in Houston, Tex.'s fertile mid-'50s scene, where he developed a love for R&B, blues, and Soul music that's consistently given his writing an edge. Kenny Rogers and the First Edition brought Newbury's "Just Dropped In to See What Condition My Condition Was In" to the top of the Pop charts, and other Newbury songs have been taken into the country charts by the likes of Willie Nelson, Roger Miller, and Eddy Arnold. The real puzzle is why Newbury never became a star himself. He never got any higher than #26 in the charts, which is odd considering the quality of his writing and the fact that his tenor voice is easily as good, if not better than that of the folks who've covered his songs.

Rodney Hayden landed in the big leagues while still in his teens. A Texas native, his old school, honky-tonk-inspired songs were treated to all the modern production nuances of today’s digital technology, while somehow maintaining the authentic tones of a true and timeless twang. Now living in Pleasanton, Calif., Hayden grew up listening to his father's country music record collection, and gravitated toward such roadhouse crooners as George Jones and Merle Haggard. But it was Robert Earl Keen who discovered Hayden when the singer's demo landing on his desk, in within a matter of weeks the young crooner was signed to Keen's own Rosetta Records.
