The multifaceted Chet Atkins is probably the most influential person in Nashville -- and in country music as a whole. Throughout his long career he has been involved with every facet of the music business as a top session player, a solo artist, a record producer, an A&R man and a label executive. Atkins started out as a prodigiously gifted musician, inspired by the finger picking style of country super star Merle Travis. He went from a journeyman road musician to an in-demand sideman on the Grand Old Opry in a very short period of time. He was part of the first Nashville A-team of session players, contributing his distinctive sound to records by the Everly Brothers, Elvis Presley, Willie Nelson and just about any country artist who recorded at RCA Studios in the 1950s. Throughout his career he has recorded too many solo albums to count, all of which are marked by his sophisticated melding of Swing, jazz, Easy Listening and country picking. Atkins is the architect of the Nashville Sound, which brought strings and glossy production to country in the '60s and '70s. He is also responsible for signing and producing important artists such as Waylon Jennings, and mentoring the late jazz guitar innovator Lenny Breau and New Country hit maker Steve Wariner, to name just a few. He has won eleven Grammy awards.

Ry Cooder has had a long and varied career as virtuoso session musician, recording artist, record producer, film scorer, musicologist and champion of indigenous music throughout the world. He started out as a guitarist of uncommon skill in Los Angeles folk music circles. He was briefly in a band with Taj Mahal called Rising Sons, and was also a part of Captain Beefheart's Magic Band. His slide guitar playing and his ability with just about any stringed instrument soon set him apart. As well as playing numerous sessions in the '60s, he worked with the Rolling Stones and is probably responsible for pointing Keith Richards in the direction of the open-tuned guitar sound that has become his trademark. Cooder's solo albums feature dramatic reworkings of some old and sometimes obscure material. He has worked extensively writing and playing movie soundtracks, such as the eerie, atmospheric Paris, Texas and The Long Riders. Cooder has most recently been active with world music, recording a very popular album with African guitarist Ali Farka Toure. His latest and most prominent role is that of producer for an ad hoc group of Cuban musicians on a recording called The Buena Vista Social Club, which has revived the careers of a number of musicians, as well as being massively popular critically and commercially.

Remember that catchy hit song from the 1970s, "When You're Hot, You're Hot?" That was Jerry Reed's. His Nashville contemporaries knew him as "The Guitar Man" back in the day -- besides playing a Fender Telecaster like it was nobody's business, he also co-starred with Burt Reynolds in each of the three Smoky and the Bandit films. Reed scored a number two hit with "East Bound and Down" from the soundtrack to that epic triptych's first installment.

The very first time Floyd Cramer got to play piano on the radio, he accompanied Elvis Presley. That not only set the tone for a career as one of Nashville's best piano players, but it also led to a solid connection with Presley's producer, Chet Atkins. Together the two pioneered what has become known as the Nashville sound, a Phil Spector-esque layering of easy-on-the-ears musical elements designed to bring country music to the pop audience.

Credited as a guitarist, dobro, and bass player as well as producer on a host of releases since 1990 -- not to mention recording his own material -- Jezzro appears to be a jack of all trades. His solo work is largely instrumental and primarily focused on country music, covering neo-traditionalism, gospel hymnal music, and most recently Brazilian jazz.

Enthusiasts of this genre consider The Red Clay Ramblers to be one of the finest folk revival bands of the 20th century, and many music journalists compare their rustic authenticity and passion for musical history to that of The Band.
As a member of Roy Acuff's Grand Ole Opry band, Bashful Brother Oswald played a dumb-hick hillbilly character for the sake of comic relief, his slapstick antics and clown-like apparel making him an audience favorite -- but his dobro playing was no joke. During the Depression, Oswald found work playing Hawaiian-style dobro music at a Flint, Mich., radio station. When he was picked up by Acuff later in the decade, he brought with him the weeping, island-flavored style of playing that is one of the defining characteristics of country music. While Oswald was not solely responsible for this sound, his role as a key player in the modern country vocabulary is indisputable. Although he worked mainly as a sideman, he did record a couple of solo efforts on which he sang as well as played, showcasing a taste for old-time Bluegrass and singing in a friendly, weathered voice.

Dobro player Mike Auldridge is probably most famous for his tenure in the Washington, D.C., Bluegrass group the Seldom Scene. He is an enormously influential player whose combination of technical prowess and beautifully lyrical playing, along with his ability to play comfortably outside of genre restrictions, has set a very high standard. He is very much in demand as a sideman and has appeared on hundreds of records from artists in the country, folk, and pop worlds. He is often sought out by singer-songwriters for his sensitive support playing. He is also a top-notch pedal steel guitarist.

Vassar Clements was one of the most innovative fiddle players on the bluegrass circuit. In the early 1950s he cut his teeth playing with picking legend Bill Monroe. Clements soon realized that he wanted to try his hand at other types of music. He began throwing in different ingredients into his musical melting pot. By fusing jazz with country music, Clements honed his skills in forty years time to become one of the most sought-after session musicians. One can hear his finesse on albums by Hank Williams, Vince Gill, Bonnie Raitt, Paul McCartney, and (even) The Monkees.

Emmons is a peerless innovator on the pedal steel guitar. The Indiana native came to Nashville with Little Jimmy Dickens in 1955 and never looked back. For a long time Emmons was an A-list session man in Nashville, recording thousands of sides for countless pop and country artists. Never limited by the perception of pedal steel as a country instrument, Emmons has recorded a number of straight-ahead jazz albums that showcase his burning technique and swinging sensibilities. He's also behind many of the innovations on modern pedal steel guitars, and his own "Emmons" brand of guitars is considered by many to be the standard for the instrument.

His solo recordings show him to be an endearing master of just about every stringed instrument -- guitar, banjo, ukulele -- and a variety of good-time styles.

Marshall is a mandolin player of stunning originality and virtuosity. Playing solo, he's invented a way to accompany himself with moving basslines and chord soloing. His work is akin to that of solo jazz guitar players such as Lenny Breau or Joe Pass, or the Pop-Jazz of Chet Atkins. He's at home with many different styles, including Tin Pan Alley standards, '60s Pop classics, classical pieces, fiddle tunes and even gypsy music. At first listen you'd swear there was more than one instrument playing. Atmospheric, compelling and well worth a listen.

Virtuoso guitarist Barenberg was a founding member of the short-lived but influential Progressive Bluegrass band Country Cooking. He started out as an acolyte of the late flat-picking acoustic guitarist Clarence White, and developed into a singular stylist able to incorporate many different types of music into his acoustic sound. He has worked extensively with dobro wiz Jerry Douglas and many other top instrumentalists in the Progressive Bluegrass and acoustic music fields. In addition to his work as a leader, Barenberg is a first-call session guitarist on the Nashville studio scene and an author of many highly regarded instructional books and videos.

Nobody can play old-fangled clawhammer banjo like Bob Carlin. But that's what he's strived for since he was sixteen and studying with the legendary picker, Hank Sapoznick. The thing about Carlin's playing (besides his obsessive-compulsive technical skill) is that he transcends fun. These fiddle-accompanied instrumental Bluegrass bits sound like Carlin was having a blast picking songs at lightning speed, all the while displaying finesse and style.
