A unique performer in today's pigeon-holed music scene. Shelby Lynne first appeared as a New Country upstart in 1988, belting out a duet with none other than George Jones. A few straight country records were followed by increasingly experimental forays into Big Band and Swing Revival. To all the material Lynne brings a powerful, heartbreaking voice and a palpable love for performing. Her song, "Your Lies," rocks with a shattering '70s soul groove, the closest thing to "Midnight Train to Georgia" there is. That song is followed up by a foot-stompin' roots jam with a bluesy feel and harmonized country vocals. This is an artist who, within the confines of mainstream music, is constantly challenging herself and her audience as well, a very rare thing today. And she sings real good, too.

Charlie Rich (aka the Silver Fox) sang the saddest songs with a voice of velvet honey. If George Jones was dubbed King of the Broken Hearts, Rich should have been named the Emperor. The man was a country music Jedi. His regal songwriting talents were honored by critics everywhere, but he modestly eschewed the concepts of stardom and fame. Prior to his own hits, Rich was a much wanted session musician playing and singing for the likes of Johnny Cash, Warren Smith, Carl Mann, Ray Smith, Billy Lee Riley, and many others. He also penned "Break Up" for the Killer, Jerry Lee Lewis, as well as "The Ways of a Woman in Love" for Johnny Cash, and "I'm Comin' Home" for Carl Mann, (which was later recorded by none other than the King himself, Elvis Presley). Rich had a way of creating a silk spun country sound by blending the smoother elements of country, jazz, blues, Gospel, Rockabilly, and soul into his own personalized flowing musical textures. Listening to his near weeping voice on songs such as "I Take it on Home," "Don't Put No Headstone on My Grave," or the more commercially successful "The Most Beautiful Girl" gives hope that real music will one day grace the airwaves again. Rich died from a blood clot in his lung while he and his wife were travelling to Florida in the summer of 1995, three years after releasing the critically acclaimed Pictures and Paintings.

Straddling the line between Gospel and mainstream pop, the Staple Singers became known for making powerful music with an uplifting message. Having had moderate success at a variety of labels earlier in the 1960s, the Staples truly found their footing after signing to Stax in 1968. With production by legendary guitarist Steve Cropper, both Soul Folk in Action and We'll Get Over featured universal calls to action that paralleled the burgeoning civil rights movement of the late-'60s. The dawn of the '70s saw Pervis Staples leave the group; he was replaced by younger sister Yvonne. The decade also saw the family funkify their sound, as famed Muscle Shoals producer Al Bell oversaw the making of hits such as "I'll Take You There" and "Heavy Makes You Happy." Through it all, Mavis Staples' soulful, earthy vocals powered the group's positive messages. The Staple Singers continued to chart and sell well throughout the '80s and '90s; sadly, Pops Staples died in 2000. The Staple Singers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999.

Remember that catchy hit song from the 1970s, "When You're Hot, You're Hot?" That was Jerry Reed's. His Nashville contemporaries knew him as "The Guitar Man" back in the day -- besides playing a Fender Telecaster like it was nobody's business, he also co-starred with Burt Reynolds in each of the three Smoky and the Bandit films. Reed scored a number two hit with "East Bound and Down" from the soundtrack to that epic triptych's first installment.

As the singer of one of the most romantic songs ever recorded, "When A Man Loves A Woman," Percy Sledge has attained immortal status. His pure, pleading voice rises to an emotional pitch just short of a holler as he pours his aching soul into the tearjerkers he loves to sing. Recording at the famed Muscle Shoals recording studio in Alabama, Sledge helped define a new style of music from the rural South known as deep soul. But Sledge thinks of himself as a country, rather than a soul, singer; he grew up in a town with one stoplight, listening to country singers on the radio. The slow-tempo ballads for which he's famous feature a tightly knit drum and bass, country and blues-tinged guitar, and a church-like organ that lays down soul-stirring chords. The gospel fever of his voice pierces emotional armor with seemingly sincere and simple songs -- and frequently causes ecstatic goose bumps.

When you grow up in Lafayette, La., you pretty much have to go out of your way to find bad food or bad music, as Marc Broussard can attest to. The son of Ted Broussard (guitar player for the Boogie Kings) never had to go far to be surrounded by a myriad of musicians of all styles (albeit mostly Cajun or roots-related). Perhaps that's why traces of Dr. John, a young Lee Dorsey and various other soulful singers can be heard in his voice. His sound is more twangy than tangy, but not as full-blown "alt country" as someone like Jay Farrar.

There aren't a lot of brothers who dabble in country music. Okay, there was Charlie Pride, Joe Tex and of course Ray Charles did some Nashville sounding songs with all those strings and backing vocal choirs. But when guys like Johnny Nash or Dobie Gray played country music it was always better than those who stuck to country's often limiting and formulaic blueprint. Gray's smash hit "Drift Away" (written by Mentor Williams) is a perfect example of this. It has the instrumentation of a Jerry Reid or Bobbie Gentry recorded song, but Gray's emotive singing and subtle vocal gymnastics could go places that someone like...oh, say Kenny Rogers could never ever even dream about. He wasn't as gritty as Joe Tex, but out of all the African American guys out there who dared to try the twang, Gray's buttery voice gave his songs a flavor unmatched by anyone else. He wasn't always going for a country soul sound. Born Leonard Victor Ainsworth, he tried his hands at a few different musical styles. His first real hit "The 'In' Crowd" was a go-go pop soul ditty that the mod kids loved dancing to in the '60s. He also experimented with disco in the late '70s and garnered another chart topper with "You Can Do It" before going back to singing and recording more country songs in the '80s.

The Staple Singers just wouldn't be the same without old Mavis. Lead singer and probably the most underrated Diva of the 20th century, Mavis Staples first recorded solo for Volt in 1969. She even tried her hand at Disco in 1979 and trendy, electronic pop in 1984, but at the end of the day, Mavis Staples is a soul sister. Her voice is a unique one in that her range rests perfectly between tenor and mezzo-soprano. Another talent that lies within her satiating contralto is her almost super human ability to phrase with finesse and to implant the pure power of passion and emotion through manipulating her vocal tone. This proves to be especially compatible with The Staple Singers' uncommon blend of Country Soul.

There's a photograph of Tony Joe White floating about the Internet. He's smoking while strolling through a bayou jungle bare-chested, a guitar slung over his shoulder and black leather pants suctioned to his legs. He looks a lot like Elvis during his '68 comeback special, only cooler. A child of Louisiana with Cherokee blood flowing through his veins, White helped invent swamp rock in the late '60s with hits like "Polk Salad Annie," a murky fusion of stripped-down RnB and Hendrix-inspired wah-wah. Meanwhile, he became an in-demand songwriter after Dusty Springfield turned "Willie and Laura Mae Jones" into an instant classic, and Brook Benton followed suit with "Rainy Night in Georgia." By the '70s, White had toned down the lusty funk and transformed himself into an articulate singer-songwriter, one who detailed the complications of romance as well as the hardships of the Southern working class. Over the years the media-shy Louisianan has settled into cult artist status, scoring several more hits on the country charts. But in the end there can be no doubt that Tony Joe White, nicknamed the Swamp Fox, is indeed one of the coolest dudes to ever to wear black leather pants.

Before disappearing into the jungles of Hawaii, Joe South was riding high on a string of hits and Grammy Awards. Then he took to heart a question he posed on "Don't It Make You Wanna Go Home," one of his best songs, and ditched the crapstorm of fame for a simpler life. Born Joseph Souter in Atlanta, Ga., in 1940, the singer first was employed as a session guitarist for Jerry Reed and Ray Stevens at the National Recording Corporation (NRC) studios in Atlanta. In the late 1960s and early '70s South was at his peak. He had major hits with "Walk A Mile In My Shoes," perhaps the greatest "f-you" song ever recorded, and the awesomely bitter "Games People Play." At the same time, other folks had hits with songs he had written: Deep Purple's "Hush," Lynn Anderson's "(I Never Promised You A) Rose Garden" and Billy Joe Royal's "Down In The Boondocks" were all huge radio hits. His music seamlessly merges country and Southern soul tradition with bright pop production, lyrically sketching out his prickly nature (which is legendary) by calling out the music business and the American people in general for their shallowness and self-centered behavior. They aren't nice songs, and despite pointed social commentary (even his love songs are often about class division), South sometimes comes off as more a misanthrope than a prophet. But it's this deeply embedded hostility that sets him apart as a performer. There just aren't a lot of songs on the radio with such open acrimony. As his fame grew, his distaste for the music business seemed to grow along with it and his live performances became erratic. Following the suicide of his brother Tommy (also his drummer) in 1975, South moved to Hawaii where he was rumored to be living in the jungle. He did make one comeback in the later '70s, but it's his early recordings with his sitar-like guitar sound and downcast lyrics that make his body of work a legacy for country, country soul and classic rock fans.

Pops Staples did not release a record of his own until 1992, but his name has been synonymous with country-flavored Gospel and blues since he and his daughters started putting out records as the Staple Singers in the 1960s. His much-imitated, spectral guitar lines have been echoed by the most respected purveyors of American Roots rock, from Steve Cropper to Robbie Robertson to CCR. Staples' vocal style is the link between Mississippi John Hurt and Curtis Mayfield -- high-register, refined, and shrouded in deep Soul. In the latter days of the Civil Rights movement, the Staple Singers were outspoken in their commitment to change, performing uncompromising music that confronted and discussed the social upheaval enveloping the country at the time. Pops' career began as far back as the 1930s, and over the years he's worked with just about everyone from Robert Johnson to the Band. He's one of a handful of musicians who, without really being a household name, is among the most important figures in American music.

After playing with mod-psyche band the Event, blues rockers the Loved Ones and cosmic country crooners Mover and Dave Gleason's Wasted Days, Mike Therieau went solo. His life should have begun in Memphis, as the saturated vintage amplifier tones and analogue warmth of his songs sound like something pulled from Big Star's record collection. Other moments channel the same gospel rock rave-ups that Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett were conjuring in the desert of the 1971 film Vanishing Point. Therieau's rich rock 'n' roll influences and rootsy rue are steeped in the deep soul of a bygone era -- though his lyrics are relevant and original. By blending the familiar with the unfolding ideas of a modern day songwriter, Therieau's songs sound as if they were penned while the songwriter was living out of a suitcase. They recall an old school country soul rock vibe akin to Tony Joe White and Therieau's voice echoes the elastic range of a young Terry Reid and the wailing rasp of Steve Marriott. Listening to Therieau's music, one might wonder if it was recorded in 1976 or 2006. Nobody is making stuff this timeless any more.
