Alison Krauss was slated for greatness at an early age. At 12, the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America named her Most Promising Fiddler in the Midwest; just two years later, in 1985, she signed to Rounder Records. But even those honors barely foretold the success Krauss would eventually enjoy, breaking out of the bluegrass scene to become a bona-fide pop star with 26 Grammys to her name. Krauss' biggest record to date has been 2007's Raising Sand, which might have something to do with the participation of a certain Robert Plant. Produced by T-Bone Burnett, the unlikely project turned out to be a natural pairing, with the singers' voices hanging sweetly together over an easy, supple backdrop of rootsy Americana. The album, a critical and commercial success, followed shortly after A Hundred Miles or More, a collection of Krauss' collaborations with artists like Brad Paisley, James Taylor and Sting. Beyond singing and songwriting, Krauss also produces other artists' records, such as Alan Jackson's acclaimed 2006 release, Like Red on a Rose.

A former singer for the Country Rock band Pure Prairie League, Vince Gill found success as a solo artist with his 1983 solo debut Turn Me Loose. From this album, Gill's first single "Victim of Life's Circumstances" broke Top-40 and he's been on an uphill hayride ever since. Gill's Country Rock upbringing sometimes makes its way into his traditional-tinged Country Pop, and his latest recordings are saturated with the kind of passion you just can't fake. Gill's buttery vocals bring his sweeping ballads to life in a way that lets you know he's a man in love.

Widely acknowledged as one of the world's most innovative and technically proficient banjo players, Fleck formed the Flecktones in the early '90s and then proceeded to smash any preconceived notion about what a banjo could or couldn't do. Fleck began playing banjo in high school in New York City. From the beginning he attempted to apply the theories and principles of Bebop to the instrument, blending them in with his already formidable Bluegrass talents. He spent the '80s as part of the Newgrass Revival, a group of virtuoso string band musicians intent on freeing themselves from the limitations of the genre. In the Flecktones he's supported by electric drums, electric bass and a number of keyboard instruments, and the music is really closer to Fusion jazz than anything else. The band is a major concert attraction and their records have -- surprisingly enough -- appeared on the charts and sold in impressive numbers.

Nickel Creek are a young power trio from San Diego who write devastatingly beautiful Bluegrass-inspired folk songs, sung by an angelic-voiced female singer. It's no surprise that Alison Krauss asked to produce Nickel Creek's album; their rustically-influenced accounts of moody folk songs are sung with textured, breathy vocal harmonies and seem like a gift from the gods. Although the music is a collective wash of otherworldly stringed tones, Nickel Creek blend a diverse cornucopia of instruments to create their ethereal woodland sound. Mandolin, Greek bouzouki, fiddle, banjo, upright bass, acoustic and electric guitars come together to create unique sonic layering that was seemingly created in some pastoral sound laboratory, rather than in a conventional studio.

Those of you who have never eaten Ben & Jerry's ice cream nor swapped cassette tapes should know that Jerry Garcia was the singer and spokesman for the Grateful Dead, one of the seminally psychedelic San Francisco rock 'n' roll bands that lasted from the mid-1960s to the mid-'90s. During the '70s, he released material under the moniker of the Jerry Garcia Band, as well. In the "other" band featuring Garcia's jazzy playing, the extended, snaky and instantly recognizable solos still took place -- only within a more focused context. With many covers in his repertoire, including songs by Bob Dylan and James Taylor, Garcia was able to stretch out and have fun, resulting in a soulful sound that mixed in bits of funk, folk and bluegrass. Adding to the rootsy feeling was a group of backing singers who created a '60s R&B vibe, offering sharp contrast to the Grateful Dead's broad, spaced-out jamming. Garcia also fronted a folkie bluegrass band by the name of Old & in the Way, releasing some impressive solo material before his death in 1995. His peaceful, gentle vocal inflections were easy on the ears, especially when he was singing watery harmonies. Garcia's innovative guitar playing consisted of infinite jams and fretboard noodling that would trail off like a lysergic hallucination. Fans and followers of his who understood this knew the man as Captain Trips. And those who love his sweet mountian bluegrass songs that he used to play with David Grisman might know him as the Grateful Dawg.

Singer-Songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Ricky Skaggs started his career in Bluegrass playing mandolin and guitar with the Stanley Brothers in 1970. He kept developing his skills as both a sideman and a leader throughout the '70s, working mostly in Bluegrass. He was also a member of Emmylou Harris' Hot Band for a couple of years. In the early '80s, he had a streak of mainstream country (a genre plagued with pop gloss and overproduction) chart success. Skaggs and his sidemen's virtuoso country picking was heavily influenced by Bluegrass. That, when combined with his lean, no-frills production, makes Skaggs' gold and platinum success even more remarkable.

Guitarist Tony Rice is a standard-setting acoustic flat-picking guitarist, combining elements of Jazz, Swing, and other forms of music into a style that is both technically dazzling and expressively melodic. Rice comes from a musical family and was influenced by Doc Watson and Clarence White. Rice has played with all the important innovators of the '60s and '70s, including virtuosos Ricky Skaggs and Jerry Douglas, when Bluegrass was undergoing somewhat of a progressive renaissance. Rice spent four years in the '70s playing with mandolinist David Grisman, before striking out on his own as a band leader.

Drawing on early jazz, Grisman extended the melodic range of his bright mandolin improvisations, while adding a developed, syncopated rhythmic impetus.
A musical prodigy proficient on numerous stringed instruments, Blake played professionally by the age of sixteen. In the 1960s, he played with both June Carter Cash and husband Johnny, which led to a stint with Kris Kristofferson and ultimately a prominent role on Bob Dylan's Nashville Skyline album. Blake launched a solo career that made him a star on the Bluegrass and folk circuit, though he maintained a high profile as a session player. Although he is most often identified as a Bluegrass player, his style over the years has evolved into something much harder to label. His sound ties Old-Time String Band music, Bluegrass fiddle tunes, Country Blues, Early Jazz and even Tin Pan Alley pop together with a combination of technical virtuosity and lyrical melodic invention.

Just about every musician with a sense of irony has wanted to do a country version of "Highway to Hell" at one time or another, but only these amoral Cowpunkers have been able to pull it off without sounding like hacks. Bad Livers' outrageous choice of cover material at their live shows is a thing of legend. With a trademark skewed country style that incorporates Bluegrass, Appalachian Folk, Punk and rock 'n' roll, they re-invent Classic Rock and country with alarming virtuosity and bone-dry humor. This same sense of irreverence and expert ability applies to their numerous originals, enlarging their catalogue of songs to GBV-like proportions.

This band is made up of veterans of several high-profile Bluegrass bands, including Alison Krauss & Union Station and the Cox Family. They play straight-ahead Bluegrass and make some forays into country music; the instrumental work is frankly mind-boggling. The band can play at unearthly tempos and still retain a sense of subtlety and melodic invention. The singing is also exceedingly strong, even outshining the instrumental work with richly layered harmonies and soulful leads. Their original material has the familiar feel of instant classics.

The Seldom Scene are a lot like Fairport Convention or even Skynyrd. Although many musicians have passed through the band's ranks, its genre-defining fusion of bluegrass and California country-rock has remained consistent. Not bad for a group that never intended to be a full-time project, much less one of Americana's great institutions. The Seldom Scene came together in Bethesda, Md., in 1971, agreeing that while they would make records, they would play local clubs only one night a week and occasionally do a full-blown concert. Of course, this plan fell apart quickly. The Seldom Scene helped spearhead the progressive bluegrass movement, with a string of acclaimed records (Acts 1, 2 and 3 are downright essential) featuring ghostly harmonies, spacey accompaniment and moody covers of James Taylor, Dillard and Clark, and other hippie singer-songwriters. By the late '70s, however, increased exposure helped fracture the original lineup, which couldn't reconcile the band's fame and the desire to remain low-key. Since then the Seldom Scene seem to experience a rupture in personnel every couple years or so. Only banjoist Ben Eldridge still stands from the band's first incarnation.

What happens when you cross a Muleskinner with a furry bear? You get something that is Old & In The Way. This tie-died Bluegrass project was birthed by the late, great Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead in 1973. Along with Muleskinner members David Grisman on the mandolin and vocals, Peter Rowan on the guitar and vocals, Vassar Clements on the fiddle and John Kahn on bass, Garcia sought to get in touch with his old timey musical roots, and to turn on more people to the genre. The music here is knee slappin', twang toned, jam friendly, harmonious Bluegrass that sounds a lot like a freakin' country-bear jambaroo.

The original writer of the crossover hit "Gentle On My Mind," John Hartford was much more than a one hit wonder. He was an accomplished fiddle, mandolin, guitar and banjo player (as well as a riverboat captain), and he played on the Byrds' cult classic album Sweetheart Of The Rodeo. After joining up with like-minded string band enthusiasts Norman Blake and Vassar Clements, Hartford began exploring bluegrass and pushing the boundaries of tradition. Today he is considered one of the founding pioneers of progressive bluegrass, and hailed as an acoustic deity. He passed away in 2001 due to complications from non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

This band was started in 1971 by mandolinist Sam Bush. Successfully blending a deep knowledge of traditional Bluegrass music and virtuoso musicianship with a sense of musical adventurousness, New Grass Revival incorporated many different styles of music into their sound, including jazz, rock, Celtic and Eastern music. The band's take on Bluegrass was successful enough for the word "newgrass" to become synonymous with a new type of Bluegrass fusion. The band recorded a number of albums before breaking up in the late '80s. Former banjoist Bela Fleck has found unprecedented success with his eclectic group the Flecktones, and all of the other members remain highly active A-list studio and touring players.

Douglas is the premiere slide dobro player performing today. His playing can be found on myriad pop, country, folk and Bluegrass records. A professional musician since the age of sixteen, he has been sideman to (or belonged to) everyone from Ricky Skaggs to Emmylou Harris. His playing is limitless in terms of tone, technique and melodic invention. He is a dazzlingly fast picker, simulating the rolling sound of a Bluegrass banjo as well as the sliding, whining sound of a pedal steel guitar. He is also capable of great subtlety, able to lend pithy support to the prettiest songs. Douglas has also issued numerous records as a bandleader.

For the 10 years they were together between 1977 and 1987, Hot Rize were at the vanguard of the Progressive Bluegrass scene. The Colorado group had a deep knowledge of the traditions of the form which they used as a jumping off point, incorporating elements of jazz, rock Gypsy music, and hard core country into their own unique vision. Banjo player Pete Wernick and mandolin/fiddle player Tim O'Brien are considered virtuosos on their respective instruments. Wernick has written a number of highly successful banjo method books. The group also performed together in the form of their Honky Tonk/Western Swing alter egos "Red Knuckles and the Trailblazers", playing tight swinging versions of country songs from the '40s and '50s.

Once thought as that little kid with the mandolin, Chris Thile has matured into a band leader (Nickel Creek) and now a solo recording artist who continues to develop his own unique style. On the heels of Bela Fleck, Dave Matthews and other neo-bluegrass fusion musicians, Chris Thile has expanded upon his early roots beginnings to include jazz fusion and indie/alternative meanderings. His fourth solo CD, Deceiver, while still on the independent bluegrass/country label Sugar Hill, carries a modern sound befitting someone in their early twenties regardless of their musical leanings. Thile's latest batch of lyrics are steeped in rebellious angst and emo romance, while still making a respectful nod to the sounds of the old traditional waltzes and reels of his youth. It's exciting to watch this virtuoso musician grow up, grab hair gel and leap between genres, heading toward becoming a neo-eclectic alt star on his own terms. Already a mature old-timer as a songwriter and performer, Chris Thile seems determined to sow his musical oats in new ground without letting anyone set any expectations on what he should be bringing to their ears.

Peter Rowan used to sing for the all-star Bluegrass band Old and in the Way, as well as the Folk-Rock outfit Sea Train. Today we find a much more mature Rowan dipping into stripped-down Country-Folk songs composed of just his voice, guitar and harmonica. His songs are deep without being complicated, eco-conscious and well-arranged with his brilliantly metered vocals. Pasted in a dusty vibe, these pensive ditties would make Woody Guthrie proud.

Although the Dillards aren't single-handedly responsible for bluegrass' migration from Appalachia to California, there's no denying they provided vital transportation. Raised in Salem, Mo., brothers Rodney and Doug Dillard jammed in a string of outfits before forming their own in 1960. The newly christened Dillards soon relocated to Los Angeles, where they made several appearances as the Darlings on the Andy Griffith Show. More importantly, the group became a pillar of the burgeoning folk/country-rock scene, along with the Byrds, Gosdin Brothers, Clarence White, etc. In 1967 Doug jumped ship to team up with ex-Byrd Gene Clark in the now legendary Dillard and Clark. Meanwhile, Rodney and company strapped on electric instruments, learned some Beatles tunes and in the process, helped invent progressive bluegrass with a pair of electrified classics: Wheatstraw Suite and Copperfields. Despite a string of personnel changes in the '70s, the Dillards only further cemented their reputation as one of bluegrass' most innovative and maverick acts. The group finally slipped into semi-retirement sometime in the '80s, occasionally releasing a record and playing a festival.

Mark O'Connor started off as a much sought-after fiddle player who recorded parts for over 450 albums in various Nashville studios before deciding to take a stab at a solo career. Oddly enough, his own music is more Béla Fleck than Bill Monroe: O'Connor blends jazz arrangements with subtle folk and Bluegrass undertones to create his own rootsy ambiance.

Years before the term (or even the notion of ) Progressive Bluegrass existed, the Country Gentlemen were pioneering it. Like many Folk Revival players of the late '50s and early '60s, the Country Gentlemen were turned on to Bluegrass via folk music. While their more popular contemporaries were stuck playing "Tom Dooley" in v-neck sweaters on college campuses, the Country Gentlemen dipped so deep into Bluegrass music that they became gifted Bluegrass musicians and singers. Although they've gone through more lineup changes than Deep Purple, the band still records and plays Bluegrass festivals.

He began his career playing banjo with a variety of bluegrass bands, including the Sunny Mountain Boys, the Kentucky Mountain Boys and probably a few other bands with "mountain boys" in the name. But J.D. Crowe was no traditionalist -- though his playing could possess all the foot-stomping finger-ferocity of his main influence Earl Scruggs, Crowe was determined to expand the genre. When J.D. Crowe & the New South first came out in the mid-1970s, Bluegrass was permanently changed, for Crowe drew on rock, blues and jazz for a more richly varied style similar to what David Grisman was doing with his "Dawg" music. The New South became a launching pad for many of Bluegrass's most enduring stars -- the original lineup featured Jerry Douglas on dobro, Tony Rice on guitar and vocals, and Bobby Sloan on fiddle. Crowe is mostly a studio cat these days, but occasional concerts continue to prove his rolling mastery of the banjo.

Louisiana's Cox Family weave Gospel harmonies into their already soaring Bluegrass sound and arrive at a distinctive and arresting sound of their own. The group, which comprises patriarch Willard Cox, his son Sydney, and daughters Eviler and Suzanne, are all excellent instrumentalists. But their uncanny harmonizing skills have brought them the measure of fame and fortune that sets them apart from much of the Bluegrass world. They were "discovered" by Bluegrass superstar Alison Krauss, who brought them to Rounder Records, as well as produced a number of their albums.

Those of you who are equal enthusiasts of British folk and American bluegrass will find a home in the music of the Greencards, who seem to pull influences from both acoustic realms. This of course may have to do with the fact that half the band hails from the United Kingdom. Predictably, their Nickel Creek-esque skills are much more appreciated in Austin, Texas than London, England which explains why they earned the Austin Music Awards' "Best New Band" prize in 2004, in part thanks to the appreciation and support of Robert Earl Keen (and a steadily climbing U.S. fanbase). Their debut album Movin' On showcased the Greencards' strong talent for finesse in musicianship, but it was their sophomore long player Weather and Water that unleashed the band's ability to write memorable songs and mood-setting instrumentals. The band's third long player made history when, in 2007, Viridian reached the top spot on Billboard's Bluegrass chart, the first international band to do so. A track from the album, "Mucky the Duck," was then nominated for a Grammy Award. Shortly thereafter, the band moved to Sugarhill Records, which released Fascination in 2009.

Banjo player Tony Trischka was one of the leading instrumentalists of the progressive Bluegrass scene of the '70s. His style encompasses everything from classic Bluegrass to Progressive Bluegrass and many forays into jazz. He has played and recorded with most of the important innovative players from the Progressive Bluegrass movement and has recorded prolifically as a leader, most notably with his band Skyline. Trischka was a teacher to current banjo star Bela Fleck.
