With his slight lisp and high, nasal whine, ex-Dead Kennedy Jello Biafra's voice is not one you easily mistake. Nor can you ignore his hyper-charged rants regarding politics, the media, censorship, dunderheaded macho behavior, politics, and inane drug laws. Biafra is a seething cauldron of intelligent aggression, never afraid to point fingers at hypocrisy, corruption and general idiocy where he sniffs it out. He has played the part of muckraker with bravado ever since the Dead Kennedys' first album Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables was released in 1980. In 1979, Biafra mounted a serious campaign for mayor of San Francisco; he came in fourth out of ten -- not bad considering his tactics included vacuuming leaves off of Senator Diane Feinstein's lawn and proposing legislation in which all businessmen would be required to wear clown suits. On his 2000 release, Become the Media, Biafra shows that time has not dulled, deadened or drained him one bit. He attacks the political system, bringing up pointed facts and inflammatory opinions.

Save for fellow lefty egghead Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn is more responsible than any other individual for spawning a small army of upset -- if not radical -- youth. Zinn's best-known work, A People's History of the United States, not only questions how the history of the United States has been taught; it turns U.S. history on its head. Rather than taking the traditional view of history (that of the conquering world leader), Zinn gives readers a perspective of history from the vantage point of those tromped upon in the process. Those who only know Zinn for A People's History... are in for a treat, as his lectures challenge conventional thinking while still being fairly easy to digest. Whether you're a questioning youth uneasy with what passes as "conventional wisdom," or a diehard Eugene Anarchist®, you'll come away with something valuable from Zinn's lectures.

Mumia Abu-Jamal is the Philadelphia journalist convicted of shooting a police officer in 1982. Before Pennsylvania passed legislation banning journalists from visiting death row, Abu-Jamal recorded a series of essays on a variety of political and socio-political topics. The political Alternative Tentacles label compiled a handful of these essays -- all of which highlight Abu-Jamal's insightful ides and succinct use of language - into one very strong, extremely passionate Spoken Word album.
