Jazz and R&B-infused street poet Gil Scott-Heron is considered to be one of the godfathers of rap but while his impressive baritone adds weight to his often politically charged poems, he's also able to kick in with a robust, Lou Rawls-style singing voice. Heron's early albums with Brian Jackson were Jazz-Funk affairs that had a greater connection to the radical FM rock of the early 1970s than to most R&B of the day. But by the middle of that decade, Heron's voice and material were strong enough to get airtime on urban airwaves, and he scored hits with "The Bottle" and "Johannesburg." Heron has only recorded once during the '90s, but his original, multigenre mix of songs and spoken word has been embraced by the British Acid Jazz generation but serious personal demons have waylaid his career.

Linton Kwesi Johnson is revered as dub's first poet. A journalist and poet
by trade, Johnson lived in rural Jamaica with his grandmother until he was
11, when his family moved to London. In England, he experienced racism at
the hands of both teachers and fellow students, and discovered that Britain
suffered from the same class inequities that plagued his native country.
Johnson joined the English Black Panthers in his teens, where he learned
about black history and socialism, and found an outlet for his rage in
poetry. He began publishing in race-focused journals, often writing in
Jamaican patois. It was only a matter of time before roots artists
discovered his work and helped him set it to music. Hailed for his rhythmic,
intelligent lyrics and streetwise sensibility, Johnson is now a central
figure in reggae despite his erratic recording history.

With his slight lisp and high, nasal whine, ex-Dead Kennedy Jello Biafra's voice is not one you easily mistake. Nor can you ignore his hyper-charged rants regarding politics, the media, censorship, dunderheaded macho behavior, politics, and inane drug laws. Biafra is a seething cauldron of intelligent aggression, never afraid to point fingers at hypocrisy, corruption and general idiocy where he sniffs it out. He has played the part of muckraker with bravado ever since the Dead Kennedys' first album Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables was released in 1980. In 1979, Biafra mounted a serious campaign for mayor of San Francisco; he came in fourth out of ten -- not bad considering his tactics included vacuuming leaves off of Senator Diane Feinstein's lawn and proposing legislation in which all businessmen would be required to wear clown suits. On his 2000 release, Become the Media, Biafra shows that time has not dulled, deadened or drained him one bit. He attacks the political system, bringing up pointed facts and inflammatory opinions.

Patti Smith thought he was a latter-day Rimbaud; Jack Kerouac called him the best young writer around. He worked for Andy Warhol, partied with...well, everyone, and has seen his most famous book made into a major motion picture. Jim Carroll has lived many lives, surviving them all with a nonchalant aplomb that would've sent most people to the grave; but perhaps it's his catlike tenacity that has allowed him to continue in his role as journalist of the damned. He has proven to be a skilled and even-handed observer of the degradation around and inside of him, leaving startling and intriguing documents for readers and listeners to wonder at. His most potent and notorious song, "People Who Died," is an unforgettable anthem about the addicts and freaks who have passed out of his life. It's a potent mixture of raw, fast-paced rock 'n' roll and downtown poetry delivered in the songwriter's emotional, strained voice. He sounds as if he's desperately searching for catharsis or redemption. One can hear this on his 2000 EP Runaway as well; witness lines such as, "So I think it's time / That you all start to think about getting by / Without the need to go out and find / Somebody to love" (from "It's Too Late"). The quintessential loner, Carroll demands of himself and his audience that we extract meaning and some sort of salvation from our experiences. That's what he's been doing since he was thirteen.

Leonard Nimoy will forever be linked to the character he played on the mania-inducing '60s sci-fi show Star Trek -- namely, the half-man/half-Vulcan first mate Spock. While on the show, and after its demise, Nimoy released several albums of original material and covers of then-current pop songs. While his musical legacy amounts to pure novelty, Nimoy does actually know how to sing, and he often sounds similar to mega-selling crooner Roger Whitaker. In any case, Nimoy is certainly more of a true "singer" than his cohort William Shatner, and his music, while campy, is always a lot of fun to hear.

The man who launched a thousand aspiring artists, writers, musicians and drug addicts, all of whom were drawn to his attractive-like-a-car-crash experimental prose. Burroughs may have been a beat, but he was pure Punk rock, living the life of a down-and-out criminal and low-life at a time when such behavior was hardly chic. As the world's original junkie punk, he collaborated with everyone from Kurt Cobain to Industrial provocateur Genesis P. Orridge; from the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy to expert arranger and producer Hal Willner. His albums can be as unsettling and powerful as his books, including the eclectic and brilliant Dead City Radio (1990) and the more straightforward readings found on Call Me Burroughs (1995). His influence can be felt myriad places -- when one listens to Lou Reed's dark, image-laden lyrics in the song "Heroin," or to Al Jorgensen's nihilistic vitriol on The Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Taste. Performance artist Laurie Anderson often references his writings, and Gus Van Zant's casting choice of Burroughs as Tom the priest in Drugstore Cowboy was nothing short of inspired. Always restless in his creativity, Burroughs also dove into the world of modern art, proving himself to be quite handy with a shotgun and paint pellets. He died in 1997, miraculously making it to the ripe old age of eighty-three.

"I would prefer to read without . . . sound effects and without hip static." Poet laureate of the Beat Generation, Allen Ginsberg wrote some of American poetry's best-known lines. Most notably, in "Howl," he "saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving, hysterical, naked, dragging themselves through the Negro streets at dawn, looking for an angry fix, angel-headed hipsters burning for he ancient heavenly connection to the starry dynamo in the machinery of night . . ." His singular vision helped birth not only a 1950s counterculture phenomenon, but also the subsequent convulsions of hippie and punk; his influence on rock can be measured by his associations with Bob Dylan (who appeared on an album of Ginsberg songs, First Blues; employed Ginsberg for the film of "Subterranean Homesick Blues"; and commissioned him for liner notes on Desire) and the Clash (Combat Rock's "Ghetto Defendant" turns on the poet's stentorian contribution).

Born (1926) and raised in New Jersey, Ginsberg took inspiration from Walt Whitman and saw himself as a descendant of Whitman's American individualism. ("I'm putting my queer shoulder to the wheel," he vowed in another early classic, "America.") A trickster who incorporated poetry, blues and Buddhism in his performances, Ginsberg helped invent the '60s concept of "happenings." As an outgrowth of this persona, Ginsberg recorded frequently, offering not only the belated release of First Blues in 1983, but also an album of William Blake poems set to music (Songs of Innocence and Experience) and a stack of spoken word discs, including Allen Ginsberg Reads Kaddish: A 20th Century American Ecstatic Narrative Poem for Atlantic and The Lion for Real on Great Jones. (On the latter, producer Hal Willner matched Ginsberg with such jazz musicians as Bill Frisell and Marc Ribot. Willner later compiled the ultimate Ginsberg aural document, Rhino's four-CD Holy Soul Jelly Roll.)

Ginsberg's last years featured more musical collaborations. He teamed with composer Philip Glass for the album Hydrogen Jukebox and a theatrical production of "Wichita Vortex Sutra." (A 1994 recording of the latter was issued on Artemis in late 2004.) He and Glass also collaborated with Paul McCartney on the anti-war "Dance of the Skeletons." Although he died in 1997, Ginsberg's commitment, playfulness and deep seriousness live on.

Ram Dass was born Richard Alpert in 1931. He became famous for his experiments with LSD in the 1960s with people like Timothy Leary and Allen Ginsburg; he was eventually dismissed from Harvard for his work with psychedelics. In the late 1960s he traveled to India where he worked with a guru for years. On his return he wrote several well-received spiritual books and made various spiritual recordings, becoming something of a guiding light for the post-hippie generation.
