Kirk Franklin has been a contemporary gospel sensation since his 1993 debut album, Kirk Franklin & The Family, broke records as the first gospel debut to reach platinum status. Since then, Franklin has spent his entire career at the forefront of a crossover-friendly gospel music scene, effortlessly riding the line between preaching and secular relevance. With s! ubsequent records receiving equally high praise over the next decade, Franklin continued to evolve his craft, though remaining primarily a rapper with melodic edges and leaving the heavier vocal lifting to extended members of the vastly talented Kirk Franklin "family." After his 2002 release, The Rebirth Of Kirk Franklin, was hailed as a masterpiece, he waited a full three years before reemerging from the studio with Hero, a hip-hop-R&B-urban gospel amalgam that brought all of his best features to the forefront in a project that sounded stylistically like a Franklin "best of," but was refreshingly original.

R&B sister act Mary Mary played a key role in bringing the Christian music industry to the attention of mainstream audiences. Their debut album, Thankful, went platinum and its single "Shackles" made its way onto gospel, soul and pop charts, setting a precedent that invigorating a quiescent niche. Produced by Warryn Campbell (Brandy, Boyz II Men, Dru Hill, Luther Vandross), their R&B grooves are as tight as it gets, but without sacrificing clear evidence that they were raised on gospel. The duo got their "big break" on BET's Bobby Jones Gospel Show.

Yolanda Adams quit her teaching job in the 1980s and set out on a journey to spread the good word through danceable Gospel music. Borrowing heavily from R&B tradition, she slapped a modern groove on the old styles and, along with a number of like-minded contemporaries, revitalized a lagging Christian music scene in the process. In a powerfully emotive voice, she can tear it up on a chipper Whitney Houston-like pop number and, with obviously deep devotion, keep it real on somber, synth-heavy traditionals. By her twentieth year in the music biz, Adams had racked up 20 major accolades, from BETs to AMAs to Grammys, and showed no signs of slowing down. In fact, to mark that two-decade anniversary, she left Atlantic and signed with Columbia, launching a new era in bold RnB from a humble diva.

Caesar is one of the greatest living Gospel singers -- she holds up extraordinarily well when placed against those who have joined the Lord's army on a full-time basis. She can sing up an amazingly fiery down-home storm, but she specializes in preaching while singing. Even Jews and Buddhists can embrace Caesar's music: citizens of Earth, if you want to give your children the world's biggest guilt trip, simply play them "Don't Drive Your Mama Away." Soulsters of any faith will want to dive straight into her achingly beautiful rendition of Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready," which can open up tear ducts faster than a pantry full of onions. If everyone preached as magnificently as Caesar, our gin joints would be empty and our churches full.

CeCe Winans is the uncontested queen of urban gospel. Her best work leans toward CCM, being rhythmically and melodically more straight-laced than her urban gospel and R&B contemporaries. But in any category, she's pure powerhouse. Her presence and vocal abilities fall somewhere between Patti LaBelle and Sandi Patty, which isn't a surprise considering her gospel-royalty bloodline: a spawn of the Winans legacy that includes Mom & Pop Winans, Bebe, Vickie, Marvin, Mario and more. (Not to mention the new generation of grandkids.) Of all the Winans, Cece has the largest global impact, racking up five Grammy Awards, eighteen Doves and several gold and platinum-selling albums. She's also forayed into the mainstream, singing with sister-divas like Whitney Houston, and she's broken out her tireless gospel shoes on talk shows and sitcoms.

Reverend John P. Kee will not be lost in the growing crowd of
urban/contemporary gospel choirs and leaders. His powerful testimony and "keyed up" voice leads song and congregation in new directions. Heavy
marching rhythms in favorites like "I Believe" make even the quiet back-row types stand up and stomp a little. Homespun humor brings you right into the family on tracks like "One Phone Call."
Giving equal air time to hard-beat hip-hop and Gospel Choir performance, Pastor Hezekiah Walker has enjoyed no small amount of crossover success in the secular and Christian markets. High-energy tunes geared to pass on the Word of the Lord employ state-of-the-art rap styles, with the Pastor's forceful delivery heading the proceedings. Were it not for the frequent references to the wages of sin, Hezekiah Walker's palpitating rap could pass for just about any hip-hop/R&B hybrid dominating today's secular airwaves. Hard-groove samples and Gospel choruses provide foundation for Walker's impassioned preach/rap in these fully bumpin' praise songs. On a side note, the Pastor is spiritual advisor to producer/artist/mogul P.Diddy.

Ironically, "smoky" is the last word you'd use to describe this smooth-as-silk, soft-as- honey, 5" 2', gospel-cum-R&B dynamo. Smokie Norful's voice is sharp and potent, a constant, pleading prayer, simultaneously as powerful and graceful and effortless as a waterfall. It's the undeniable talent that won him the title of Billboard magazine's 2003 "Artist of the Year." He's been compared to -- and often collaborates with -- artists like Stevie Wonder, Marvin Sapp and T.D. Jakes (all this in only his first eight months at bat). So while "smoky" may not describe his sound, you'd be perfectly correct in thinking incendiary vocals and ignited artistry, and then you'd get the picture of what the singer is capable of.

The crossover-prone Gospel duo BeBe and CeCe Winans have been charting in both secular and spiritual markets since their Grammy-nominated debut in 1987. Since then they have cemented their place with a string of Contemporary R&B No.1 hits, including an excellent cover of the Staple Singers "I'll Take You There." They seem to be the natural extension of the Staple Singers, crafting spiritually centered R&B that incorporates the latest pop methods and appeals to a wide variety of listeners.

Brooklyn Tab, as fondly known by congregants and fans, are their own genre. Not quite urban gospel, nowhere near classical choral ensemble, they're simply a multitude of voices raised in swaying praise, reverent worship and spirited inspirational gospel. They began as an unassuming, run-of-the-mill (though vast in numbers) choir in a church tucked so deep in Brooklyn you have to take the subway to the end of the line (changing trains at Borough Hall), catch a bus the rest of the way, then walk a few more blocks from there. But when the pastor's wife, Carol Cymbala, stepped up as choir director reluctantly (saying she didn't have the know-how for the position) word got out of the music wafting from this humble corner and the Grammys started to rain. It's something about their symbiosis of voice and spirit, the quietness of their musical power and the amount of "church" in their presentation tha! t sets them apart from even the worthiest of their contemporaries.

Dove- and Grammy Award-winning Richard Smallwood has impacted the gospel
industry through decades of influence and a unique musical style that melds
several traditions. A composer, pianist, arranger, vocalist and choral
conductor, he creates landscapes of worship music that range from peaks of
energetic urban gospel, jazz and guitar-driven soul, to meandering valleys
of piano-hosted praise sessions. A career steeped in firsts, he was a member
of the Celestials, the first gospel choir on the Howard University campus,
and founded the Richard Smallwood Singers, who were the first African
American group to perform in the Soviet Union. Mentioning accolades like
chart placement and gold records seem to pale in comparison to honors he's
received from the Kennedy Center and the White House and his instillation in
the Smithsonian Institute. He's authored countless hymns that have become
contemporary standards, such as "Center of My Joy," "Total Praise," "We've
Come to Praise Him" and "I Love the Lord."

Growing up in Gary, Ind., Williams was heavily influenced by her strict Pentecostal church, where she sang in the choir. Eventually, her interest in music led to Stevie Wonder, who hired her to be one of his backing vocalists in the trio known as Wonderlove. This lasted several years until, guided by the hand of Earth Wind & Fire's Maurice Starr, Williams struck out on her own, adopting a smooth R&B approach that complimented her emotive vocals. Hits such as "Let's Hear It for the Boy" and "Too Much Too Little Too Late" followed, but Williams returned to her Gospel roots by 1987.

Only a few years new to the scene, Robert Randolph (most often joined by "the Family Band) is the single most funkadelic rock-gospel player in the industry. The urgency in his musical passion is born of a life balanced between the torment of the streets and the haven of the soulful sounds surrounding his childhood home. Randolph started playing the pedal steel in his Orange, N.J., House of God Church, an African Pentecostal denomination where the pedal steel has become known as "sacred steel" based on a musical history dating back to the 1930s. He praised the Lord, stomped his feet, and shook the rafters all the way to venues like New York City's Beacon Theater and the long-revered Wetlands. When the Wetlands closed their famous doors for the last time, Randolph and the Family Band were asked by the owners to rock the walls one final time on that propitious night, oddly enough to the beat of a wailing gospel groove. Fire extinguishers are definitely required when Randolph plays his number one most requested, "I Don't Know What You Came to Do."

Kurt Carr took himself to church at age 13 and from there to the center of the urban gospel movement. One of the more powerful musical forces in the genre, he's the self-proclaimed prodigy of the man he calls his godfather, the legendary Richard Smallwood. Carr began as the musical director and pianist for Reverend James Cleveland and his crew, not releasing his own personal collection until 1991. Shortly after that release, he left one of his most indelible marks on the industry by launching GospoCentric—the label home of countless top Christian R&B and urban gospel artists. A gifted singer, instrumentalist, producer, arranger and conductor, he brings a multicultural touch (flamenco guitar, Armenian accordion, bagpipes) to West Angeles COGIC Church where he serves as creative director. From the early days of the Kurt Carr Singers to collaborating with visiting musical VIPs including Stevi! e Wonder, Gladys Knight, Denzel Washington, Lynn Whitfield and Kirk Franklin, Carr keeps the Grammys coming.

With a sister like Cece, Bebe sometimes gets left in her shadow. But his flawless R&B and inspirational gospel has long made him an undeniable force in the genre and a pillar of the famous Winans family. He was the baby boy in The Winans' four-brother musical makeup, and a longtime duet partner to Cece, but since his solo debut in 1997, each release has progressively earned him individual kudos. Production is always studio-slick, fanning his vocal flames hotter. His 2005 album Dream was an historical contribution, released during Black History month in a nod to Martin Luther King's dream. It's to-date Winans' most driven personal work and hopefully a foreshadow of what we can expect from him in the future.

Take 6 started out as an entirely a cappella outfit, only four folks rehearsing in a bathroom at Oakwood College in Huntsville, Ala. Since then, the quartet-gone-sextet have recorded or performed with luminaries like Quincy Jones, Ella Fitzgerald, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Al Jarreau, Don Henley, James Taylor, k.d. lang, Patti Austin, Randy Travis, Queen Latifah and Branford Marsalis. They've also shown up on the soundtracks for Do The Right Thing, Boyz In The Hood, Dick Tracy and Glengary Glen Ross. In later albums, Take 6 branched out beyond a cappella into quietly accompanied, inspirational jazz R&B, with each of the six band members playing an instrument. But their greatest individual "instruments," the mainstay of their vast appeal, remains their astute and lustrous vocals, which weave immaculate street corner doo-wop harmonies over gorgeous gospel jazz.

The mighty Reverend James Cleveland has been a leading figure in keeping Gospel music a vital musical force based in tradition while also adding more secular elements to broaden the audience. His gruff, powerful vocals were used as a loose narrative where he would speak over deliberate, solidly played piano runs. In the mid-'50s, he began singing with the Caravans and broke records with his 1962 recording Peace Be Still. Until the end of his life in '91, he stayed on top of the game, leading choirs and Gospel workshops while managing to infuse the sound of Gospel with rhythm and soul. Listening to the slow percolation of the organs and the smoky raspiness of his vocals on his classic tracks, you can hear the sound of true inspiration.

Tramaine Hawkins is one of the finest young gospel singers out there -- "young" being a relative term for this 30-year veteran. She has earned praise -- and some criticism from traditionalists -- for bringing strong R&B chops and contemporary musical styles to the genre. This mix of genres is nothing new (ever hear a Cissy Houston album?) and Hawkins can sing straight black gospel so powerfully that she can quickly disarm her conservative critics.

A spiritualized vocal group made up of members of the first family of Contemporary Gospel, the Winans perform polished songs of praise that showcase the close harmonies of blood relatives supported by synth-heavy, modern musical stylings. Much like brother and sister BeBe & CeCe, the Winans have enjoyed no small amount of crossover success and have worked with the likes of Michael McDonald and Anita Baker. Their smooth voices and jazzy take on urban music have been a source of inspiration to listeners and musicians alike, and they are often cited as an influence by groups working in the Gospel field today.

T.D. Jakes is the Barry White of the gospel R&B world, but it didn't start there. First he was a preacher, then he became a best-selling author, and then he built a reputation as a raucous urban gospel concert marshal -- and that's just the tip of the iceberg for this community leader. Despite his international influence, Jakes' primary focus remains his congregational flock, over 5,000 strong, at the Dallas-based The Potter's House, where he serves as pastor. Time magazine dubbed him "America's Best Preacher," but his accomplishments and community efforts are too prodigious to name. Some of his most notable musical offerings are the Woman, Thou Art Loosed albums, spawned from the conferences (and books) by the same title. When it's Jakes himself at the mic, he exudes a deep, smooth R&B groove, with a sermon always simmering beneath the lyrics; sometimes he ditches the music altogether and goes straight to the sermon. On his Presents albums, Jakes gathers the industry's favorite urban gospel voices to harmonize the heart of his ministry.

The Sounds of Blackness are not your typical Gospel group. Formed in the early '70s, the group includes some forty vocalists, a ten piece band and -- these days -- some of the funkiest urban production you're likely to encounter in a non-secular format. Led by Gary Hines, the group features a bevy of extremely talented soloists who are surely on their way to solo success in the near future.

The last diva to join Destiny's Child (following the rather controversial exodus of disgruntled original Children LeToya Luckett and LaTavia Roberson), Michelle Williams seemed poised to have the least successful solo career. But rather than try to be yet another Beyonce wannabe, the Rockford, Ill., native has made her own post-Destiny's destiny by making some rather unconventional career choices. Williams was actually the first member of the trio to put out an individual project, but she turned her solo focus to gospel, releasing 2002's phenomenally successful Heart to Yours, which topped the Billboard gospel charts and became the top-selling gospel album of that year. Another gospel album and a couple of surprisingly successful Broadway stints (including starring as Shug Avery in the 2007 tour of Oprah Winfrey's musical version of The Color Purple) followed before Williams began working on her pop debut, 2008's Unexpected. "We Break the Dawn," the lead single from that album, hit No. 1 on the Billboard dance charts.

Wow, BeBe and CeCe's parents sure were busy. They have about 500 kids and they all sing Gospel. Between going to church and having...kids, when did they find time to eat, let alone learn how to sing so well? This particular Winans' name is Vickie and she has a beautiful, clear voice -- of course. Expect the state-of-the-art production values and crossover-prone choice of material we've come to anticipate from this most talented family.
