<outline type="include" text="John P. Kee" description="Reverend John P. Kee will not be lost in the growing crowd of
urban/contemporary gospel choirs and leaders. His powerful testimony and "keyed up" voice leads song and congregation in new directions. Heavy
marching rhythms in favorites like "I Believe" make even the quiet back-row types stand up and stomp a little. Homespun humor brings you right into the family on tracks like "One Phone Call." "Lilly in the Valley" and songs like it offer a perfect sampling of the clean chord style, wide open choir-power acoustics, and personal "been there" passion of Kee and his New Life Community Choir.

<outline type="include" text="Pastor Hezekiah Walker" description="Giving equal air time to hard-beat hip-hop and Gospel Choir performance, Pastor Hezekiah Walker has enjoyed no small amount of crossover success in the secular and Christian markets. High-energy tunes geared to pass on the Word of the Lord employ state-of-the-art rap styles, with the Pastor's forceful delivery heading the proceedings. Were it not for the frequent references to the wages of sin, Hezekiah Walker's palpitating rap could pass for just about any hip-hop/R&B hybrid dominating today's secular airwaves. Hard-groove samples and Gospel choruses provide foundation for Walker's impassioned preach/rap in these fully bumpin' praise songs. On a side note, the Pastor is spiritual advisor to producer/artist/mogul P.Diddy.

<outline type="include" text="The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir" description="Brooklyn Tab, as fondly known by congregants and fans, are their own genre. Not quite urban gospel, nowhere near classical choral ensemble, they're simply a multitude of voices raised in swaying praise, reverent worship and spirited inspirational gospel. They began as an unassuming, run-of-the-mill (though vast in numbers) choir in a church tucked so deep in Brooklyn you have to take the subway to the end of the line (changing trains at Borough Hall), catch a bus the rest of the way, then walk a few more blocks from there. But when the pastor's wife, Carol Cymbala, stepped up as choir director reluctantly (saying she didn't have the know-how for the position) word got out of the music wafting from this humble corner and the Grammys started to rain. It's something about their symbiosis of voice and spirit, the quietness of their musical power and the amount of "church" in their presentation tha! t sets them apart from even the worthiest of their contemporaries.

<outline type="include" text="Richard Smallwood" description="Dove- and Grammy Award-winning Richard Smallwood has impacted the gospel
industry through decades of influence and a unique musical style that melds
several traditions. A composer, pianist, arranger, vocalist and choral
conductor, he creates landscapes of worship music that range from peaks of
energetic urban gospel, jazz and guitar-driven soul, to meandering valleys
of piano-hosted praise sessions. A career steeped in firsts, he was a member
of the Celestials, the first gospel choir on the Howard University campus,
and founded the Richard Smallwood Singers, who were the first African
American group to perform in the Soviet Union. Mentioning accolades like
chart placement and gold records seem to pale in comparison to honors he's
received from the Kennedy Center and the White House and his instillation in
the Smithsonian Institute. He's authored countless hymns that have become
contemporary standards, such as "Center of My Joy," "Total Praise," "We've
Come to Praise Him" and "I Love the Lord."" category="Urban/Contemporary Gospel" url="http://feeds.rhapsody.com/richard-smallwood/data.opml?rws=%2Fchristian-gospel%2Fgospel%2Fgospel-choir%2Fartist-chart.opml" />

<outline type="include" text="T.D. Jakes" description="T.D. Jakes is the Barry White of the gospel R&B world, but it didn't start there. First he was a preacher, then he became a best-selling author, and then he built a reputation as a raucous urban gospel concert marshal -- and that's just the tip of the iceberg for this community leader. Despite his international influence, Jakes' primary focus remains his congregational flock, over 5,000 strong, at the Dallas-based The Potter's House, where he serves as pastor. Time magazine dubbed him "America's Best Preacher," but his accomplishments and community efforts are too prodigious to name. Some of his most notable musical offerings are the Woman, Thou Art Loosed albums, spawned from the conferences (and books) by the same title. When it's Jakes himself at the mic, he exudes a deep, smooth R&B groove, with a sermon always simmering beneath the lyrics; sometimes he ditches the music altogether and goes straight to the sermon. On his Presents albums, Jakes gathers the industry's favorite urban gospel voices to harmonize the heart of his ministry.

<outline type="include" text="Rev. C.L. Franklin" description="This fiery, Detroit-based preacher has recorded an impressive number of Gospel records, including a release with his daughter Aretha. A member of Dr. Martin Luther King's inner circle, Franklin's riveting, over-the-top delivery on choir-based Traditional Gospel songs reflects the passion and dignity of the civil rights movement. <outline type="include" text="Rev. Clay Evans" description="The Rev. Clay Evans comes from the same school of groundbreaking Gospel as the Rev. James Cleveland. In the early '50s, Evans was one of the many musician/preachers adding contemporary pop shadings to once strictly hymnal Gospel. Often backed by church organ and a rousing choir, his energetic arrangements are synonymous with the form and can be enjoyed for their historical value, or as uplifting celebrations of religious belief.

<outline type="include" text="The Soul Children of Chicago" description="Contemporary Gospel with the energy and all-out funk power of a Mothership Connection. The Soul Children of Chicago are a touring choir made up of kids and teenagers under the tutelage of Gospel impresario Walt Whitman. <outline type="include" text="Sandra Crouch" description="Sandra Crouch is one of many female Gospel singers who owe a huge debt to Aretha Franklin's Gospel work in the '70s. With a powerful voice that registers just below Aretha's in timbre but equals it in soul-wrenching passion, Crouch can raise the roof along with the spirit. Expect to be inspired by her explosive interactions with a crack R&B outfit, as a massive church choir lends angelic support.

<outline type="include" text="Walter Hawkins & the Hawkins Family" description="Whether he's working solo, with the Hawkins Family or with the Love Center Choir, Walter Hawkins has become known as one of the top players in the Gospel game. Since 1975, when he formed the group that would eventually become the Edwin Hawkins Singers as a means to raise funds for his brother Edwin's singing career, Hawkins has enjoyed an astonishing level of recognition and success among secular and Christian fans alike. Hawkins' music is rooted in the deepest Gospel traditions, but he has always pushed those traditions into the present day, through relevant and innovative arrangements and by keeping a finger on the pulse of the ever-changing musical landscape.

<outline type="include" text="Bishop Billy Robinson" description="Saying that a Gospel choir is funky is often a redundant statement, but rarely does one come across a group like this. Bishop Billy Robinson, backed by a phalanx of singers and a superhuman band, whips his congregation into a pounding, gyrating celebration with ultra-dynamic rhythms and soaring harmonies. The revival-tent fervor reaches the level of a James Brown "Please, Please, Please" show-stopper.
