Caesar is one of the greatest living Gospel singers -- she holds up extraordinarily well when placed against those who have joined the Lord's army on a full-time basis. She can sing up an amazingly fiery down-home storm, but she specializes in preaching while singing. Even Jews and Buddhists can embrace Caesar's music: citizens of Earth, if you want to give your children the world's biggest guilt trip, simply play them "Don't Drive Your Mama Away." Soulsters of any faith will want to dive straight into her achingly beautiful rendition of Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready," which can open up tear ducts faster than a pantry full of onions. If everyone preached as magnificently as Caesar, our gin joints would be empty and our churches full.

Straddling the line between Gospel and mainstream pop, the Staple Singers became known for making powerful music with an uplifting message. Having had moderate success at a variety of labels earlier in the 1960s, the Staples truly found their footing after signing to Stax in 1968. With production by legendary guitarist Steve Cropper, both Soul Folk in Action and We'll Get Over featured universal calls to action that paralleled the burgeoning civil rights movement of the late-'60s. The dawn of the '70s saw Pervis Staples leave the group; he was replaced by younger sister Yvonne. The decade also saw the family funkify their sound, as famed Muscle Shoals producer Al Bell oversaw the making of hits such as "I'll Take You There" and "Heavy Makes You Happy." Through it all, Mavis Staples' soulful, earthy vocals powered the group's positive messages. The Staple Singers continued to chart and sell well throughout the '80s and '90s; sadly, Pops Staples died in 2000. The Staple Singers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999.

Whatever kitschy title you choose -- pioneer, queen, mother, or first lady of gospel music -- Mahalia Jackson is clearly one of the most influential voices of the 20th century. Her throaty, rich, resonant New Orleans-tinted voice made gospel Mahalia-style an everyman favorite and a frequent request of presidents and royalty. Once quoted as saying, "Rock 'n' roll was stolen out of the sanctified church," Jackson created such gospel explosions as "We Shall Overcome," "Elijah Rock," and "Walk in Jerusalem," which rocked the stages of the Hollywood Bowl and Carnegie Hall. "Rusty Old Halo" hit the top 40 in 1954, and Jackson's powerfully sincere version of "I've Been 'Buked and I've Been Scorned" preceded Dr. King telling the world he had a dream. With her Aretha Franklin oomph, jazz and blues rhythms, and choir-loft instincts, Jackson became an accidental legend singing the songs she learned at four years old, flooding them with soul and filling them with spirit.

The Angelic Gospel Singers cut their first sides in 1948, often with the Dixie Hummingbirds in attendance, and embarked on a career that has made them favorites across the South to this day. The group's signature sound was marked by the impassioned lead vocals of Margaret Allison and also by the inclusion of a male voice. Over the years, the lineup has seen some changes, and stylistically the Singers have gravitated towards a strong Contemporary feel. But one doesn't need to listen very close to hear the merits that have garnered them a large and devoted following.

Kurt Carr took himself to church at age 13 and from there to the center of the urban gospel movement. One of the more powerful musical forces in the genre, he's the self-proclaimed prodigy of the man he calls his godfather, the legendary Richard Smallwood. Carr began as the musical director and pianist for Reverend James Cleveland and his crew, not releasing his own personal collection until 1991. Shortly after that release, he left one of his most indelible marks on the industry by launching GospoCentric—the label home of countless top Christian R&B and urban gospel artists. A gifted singer, instrumentalist, producer, arranger and conductor, he brings a multicultural touch (flamenco guitar, Armenian accordion, bagpipes) to West Angeles COGIC Church where he serves as creative director. From the early days of the Kurt Carr Singers to collaborating with visiting musical VIPs including Stevi! e Wonder, Gladys Knight, Denzel Washington, Lynn Whitfield and Kirk Franklin, Carr keeps the Grammys coming.

Characteristic of a decades-spanning group such as this, there have been many line-up revisions, yet they have remained a centered and entertaining Gospel act, constantly changing their music to keep up with the times. The result has been repeated success with both the CCM and secular audiences.
Considered "Hard Gospel" in the 1960s, this vocal quintet was one of the many groups combining traditional Gospel structures with dynamic soul and R&B instrumentation. Unlike many of their peers, however, the Five Blind Boys of Alabama added a stronger blues flavor, often favoring slow, soulful songs over the more energetic workouts performed by everyone else. Coupling these ingredients with close harmonies and impassioned leads, they were extremely popular and influenced a generation of secular musicians. A decades-spanning catalogue provides exciting interpretations of many old standards, to which they lend their time-honed expertise.

The mighty Reverend James Cleveland has been a leading figure in keeping Gospel music a vital musical force based in tradition while also adding more secular elements to broaden the audience. His gruff, powerful vocals were used as a loose narrative where he would speak over deliberate, solidly played piano runs. In the mid-'50s, he began singing with the Caravans and broke records with his 1962 recording Peace Be Still. Until the end of his life in '91, he stayed on top of the game, leading choirs and Gospel workshops while managing to infuse the sound of Gospel with rhythm and soul. Listening to the slow percolation of the organs and the smoky raspiness of his vocals on his classic tracks, you can hear the sound of true inspiration.

The word "awesome" is as overused today as "brilliant" is in England. Well, the a cappella group S.H.I.T.R. really are brilliantly awesome. They combine Black Gospel, traditional World and American musical forms and jazz into one swinging whole. Though they sing proudly about their African American heritage, much of their audiences is made of middle-aged white secular humanists (which means people who graduated from Berkeley in the 1960s). Help expand their demographics by listening to their beautiful vocalizing.

The Sounds of Blackness are not your typical Gospel group. Formed in the early '70s, the group includes some forty vocalists, a ten piece band and -- these days -- some of the funkiest urban production you're likely to encounter in a non-secular format. Led by Gary Hines, the group features a bevy of extremely talented soloists who are surely on their way to solo success in the near future.

Though they're mostly revered as the group that brought Sam Cooke into the limelight, the Soul Stirrers had been an established Gospel act for the previous fifteen years. One of the first acts to stray from the usual quartet formula, they brought in an additional singer in to up the expressiveness of the vocals. The appropriately named Soul Stirrers brought a deep gut-wrenching suggestiveness to traditional Gospel. The years spent with Cooke in the 1950s found the group drifting towards more secular material, something Cooke departed to do full time. The group carried on with a succession of fine tenors and still record to this days although with new, younger members.

First as gospel singers and then as a soul-pop group, the Staples family has maintained a strong following and had several pop and soul hits, usually fronted by Mavis Staples' breathy vocals. The Staples family goes back to Mississippi, where as a young man Roebuck Staples played guitar and sang in local choirs. In the mid-'30s, he and his wife, Oceola, traveled up the Mississippi River to Chicago in search of work, like many of their contemporaries. The Staples had three daughters and a son, each of whom sang from an early age. They put together a family gospel act (which, until the mid-'60s, included all but the youngest daughter, Yvonne) and by the mid-'50s were considered one of the finest vocal groups in the field. The group made its first recording in the early '50s, for Pop Staples' own label, "These Are They" b/w "Faith and Grace," which they sold at concerts. In 1953 they recorded for United, and three years later for Vee-Jay, both Chicago labels, without success. In the early '60s the Staples made their first pop (secular) recordings for Epic, but had no commercial success, although 1967's "Why" snuck onto the lower reaches of the pop chart, and a version of Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth" also charted later that year. Everything changed after they signed to Stax in 1968. Their new material continued to reflect the Staples' commitment to making secular music with a message, but not until 1972's gold Bealtitude: Respect Yourself did they make the approach commercial. The Staples' first secular hit was "Heavy Makes You Happy" (Number 27 pop, Number Six R&B); and their next two hits, "Respect Yourself" (Number 12 pop, Number Two R&B) and "I'll Take You There" (Number One pop and R&B), went gold. "If You're Ready (Come Go With Me)" was a Number One R&B hit in 1973. The Staples had succeeded in meshing Memphis soul shuffles with their own messages, and might have continued to release crossover hits were it not for Stax's mid-'70s decline and eventual closing.

Curtis Mayfield's Curtom label was their next home, and in 1974 the Staples had a Number One pop and R&B hit with his "Let's Do It Again" and a Number Four hit with "New Orleans," both from the film Let's Do It Again. Mayfield also produced two of Mavis' solo albums. A couple of years later, at Warner Bros., the group changed their name to "the Staples" and released two R&B Top 20 singles: "Love Me, Love Me, Love Me" (Number 11 R&B, 1976) and "Unlock Your Mind" (Number 16 R&B, 1978). None of their singles charted again until 1984, when three, including a cover of Talking Heads' "Slippery People," appeared. Their last R&B Top 40 single was a 1985 version of "Are You Ready?" The group appeared in 1971's Soul to Soul, a documentary of a concert in Ghana, and in Wattstax (1973), and The Last Waltz (1978). In 1999 the Staple Singers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Mavis Staples also recorded solo, but without comparable success, in part because her own career was frequently suspended due to group obligations. In 1987 Prince signed her to his Paisley Park label, for whom she recorded Time Waits for No One, which he coproduced with Al Bell (who had worked with the Staples at Stax). She opened for Prince on the overseas leg of his 1990 tour and appeared on his Graffiti Bridge album. In addition, she has appeared on records by a range of artists, including Aretha Franklin (One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism), John Mayall, Ray Charles, Kenny Loggins, and Marty Stuart. Pops, who also released solo albums, appears on Mavis' The Voice. His 1994 release Father, Father won that year's Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album. He died in 2000, after falling in his home and suffering a concussion; he was 85.

Born in Cotton Plant, Ark., in 1915, Sister Rosetta Tharpe was a uniquely influential force in American South, the first superstar of recorded gospel music. She was revered for her groundbreaking fusion of rock 'n' roll with traditional praise music, which she sang with a roof-raising voice accompanied by a virtuosic electric guitar, and she delivered charisma to spare. During a time of racial segregation and deep divisions between secular and sacred music, Tharpe blurred every boundary. She had the ear of both traditional gospel audiences and secular soul and RnB artists, and she made the most of the developing mediums of radio and, later, television. But Tharpe's biggest impact might have been felt near the end of her life, when the younger generation of musicians who grew up listening to her on the radio founded their own groundbreaking labels, like Stax and Sun, and birthed American rock and roll. Tharpe made records until her death by stroke in 1973. She died on the eve of a recording session.

Odetta Gordon was born on Dec 31, 1930 in Birmingham, Alabama. She was the first African-American political folk singer and influenced many other folkie-come-lately musicians of that era. In her post adolescence, Odetta switched from classical voice training to folk by teaching herself how to play the guitar. She also became involved in singing around the coffeehouse circuit in the early 1950s. As a folk singer and songwriter, she started to achieve notability when she began appearing live with Pete Seeger and Harry Belafonte. After twenty-six albums, four music collections, and over fifty years as a folk singer, Odetta continues to sing with a deep, dominant and lucid voice.

Possibly the world's greatest Gospel group, the Dixie Hummingbirds (who recently celebrated their
70th anniversary) have managed to keep the sound of modern Gospel vital in popular music, and have been hugely influential in both the secular and the non-secular world. The quartet began performing in the late '30s, blessed with a firery young singer named Ira Tucker who shook the Gospel foundation with his spirited performances for which every soul singer from James Brown to Chris Robinson ought to cough up royalties. Tucker was innovative for his ability to sing several notes on a single syllable. The group's repertoire encompasses both jubilee-style rave-ups and laconic soul-savers. The material from their prime in the '40s to the '60s has maintained its soul-stirring, knee-dropping quality. The group attained a wider audience in '73 when they sang on Paul Simon's hit, "Loves Me Like a Rock." They have more recently begun to recruit younger members and have been the subject of an all-star tribute featuring Simon as well as Isaac Hayes and Stevie Wonder, among others.

With a practically endless catalogue of roof-raising Gospel songs, the Rev. Milton Brunson shook the collective congregation for forty-nine years, from 1948 till his death in 1997. That's a long time. A perennial favorite on Gospel Radio, Rev. Brunson's work is characterized by joyous Gospel Choir singing with the occasional soloist and uniformly great instrumental backup. Whether you're looking for an introduction to the funky sounds of Contemporary Gospel Choir or just some celebratory praise songs, Rev. Brunson's material will lift your heart and lighten your step.

A figure as legendary for his influence on other musicians as for his musical output, Davis first became known as a guitar virtuoso in the 1920s, when he played frequently on the streets. Renowned for his sophisticated guitar technique and his synthesis of folk, blues, and jazz, he also possessed a deep, powerful voice that was gruff yet melodious. Religion played an important role in the life of this blind musician, exemplified by his experiences in the Carolinas as a traveling gospel preacher. He began recording in the '40s after moving to New York City (when he was already an ordained priest) and later had a profound impact on the bohemian folk music scene of the '50s. As a mentor to many folk revival musicians, Rev. Davis transmitted his style to a new generation that revered his guitar mastery and the profound simplicity of his lyrics about troubles and redemption.

Much more than just a finalist in the "Greatest Musician Named 'Blind Willie'" sweepstakes, Johnson is a Gospel pioneer whose name is spoken in hushed tones by slide guitarists and early blues fans alike. Technically speaking he wasn't a blues man -- his lyrics spoke of salvation and the Bible, not booze and women, and his music avoided typical blues forms. Alternating between radiantly joyful major pentatonic melodies and equally haunting minor-key ones, he sang in a coarse, bass-dwelling croak that sometimes gave way to a more soothing mid-range tone. His performances sometimes featured a female vocalist, but were otherwise solo, and he backed himself with a mix of steady low-string fingerpicking and precise slide maneuvering. His recorded output clocks in at a mere ninety minutes or so, with all of it being waxed in the late 1920s, but what's there contains a sense of purity and humility capable of softening the most hardened cynic.

Delivering devout, praiseworthy lyrics in honeyed vocals, the Travelers express their devotion with so much intimacy you get the feeling you're hearing a young lover lean over his new wife, whispering compliments and promises in a gorgeous falsetto. They croon like pop stars, with aching, bittersweet harmonies, turning out riveting renditions of tradition gospel.
One of the most influential black gospel singers outside of Mahalia Jackson, Clara Ward filled her amazing vocal solos with soaring, melismatic power. Clara and her group, the Ward Singers, sought not only to please those in the gospel circuit, but also to find a wider pop audience for gospel music. Garish costumes, jewelry and wigs were all commonplace at a Ward Singers show. The group was also one of the first gospel acts to perform in a Las Vegas lounge -- they even performed at Disneyland, once. Although these actions may not have endeared them to gospel purists, their music -- and especially Clara Ward's voice -- has endured.

A staple of the Rounder Records roster since their inception in 1976, the Dry Branch Fire Squad is still a beloved act today, performing authentic mountain Bluegrass with a strong Appalachian flavor. Personnel changes have changed the face of the group, but the stellar playing and shotgun accuracy of their covers and originals catalog have remained a constant throughout the years.

Contemporary Gospel with the energy and all-out funk power of a Mothership Connection. The Soul Children of Chicago are a touring choir made up of kids and teenagers under the tutelage of Gospel impresario Walt Whitman. With a full-on funk outfit providing backing and fronted by Whitman's Bible-thumping-Dr. Funkenstein lead vocal, the kids are definitely all right, infectiously attacking Gospel standards and bumpin' originals with all the exuberance and zeal of religiously turned-on youth.

Generally considered one of the most influential Gospel singers of all time, Marion Williams sung with a full-body growl so intense that anyone who wants to dispute her right to the title had better bring along a megaphone and some throat lozenges. The other side of her style -- soul-shattering falsettos and anointed, exclamatory whoops -- had a direct effect on Little Richard, for one, as well as countless others in both Gospel and secular music circles. From 1948 to 1958 she was the central figure in the ever-touring Ward Singers, stunning audiences with the high-test stage-show/revival meeting and a larger-than-life presence that has made her a legend. A stint with the short-lived Stars of Faith followed, and in 1965 she launched a solo career that was marked by comeback after comeback until her death in 1994. Regardless of where she was on the charts or in her personal life, Williams' singing was never less than spectacular and her commitment to Christ was downright inflammatory.

In the post-war era, when Gospel was going through its major period of transition, the Harmonizing Four resisted the trend toward bolstering their music with pop shadings and stuck to the old styles. They performed straight Gospel: strongly hymnal material with little outside influence from the growing number of R&B-flavored Gospel acts. The Four's big gun was basso voice Jim Jones, a man with a sub-sonic register that provided plummeting gymnastics for the quartet's close harmonies. Their career spans into the '90s with continually updated material and backing, but with no loss of artistry and poignance. In fact, the group's mastery only increased as the years passed.

Toshi Reagon proudly shatters the image of folksingers as frail purveyors of guilt. Though she is the daughter of Sweet Honey in the Rock founder Bernice Johnson, she was first inspired to pick up a guitar after taking in a Kiss concert as a teen. Reagon wraps her distinctive voice around straight-ahead rock, acoustic blues, Black Gospel and reggae-inflected World Fusion tunes with equal dexterity. A gifted storyteller, sensitive writer, outspoken activist and powerful vocalist.
