Travis burst onto the country scene in the mid-1980s, around the same time as a few other seemingly like-minded new traditionalists. He combines a smoothly expressive baritone with self-penned material that features lyrical depth as well as great honky tonk-style instrumental work. Starting in 1985 with the single "On the Other Hand," Travis has gone into the charts and sold a huge number of records. He virtually kicked open the door for the "country hunk" phenomenon, although by the time the '90s rolled around, the "hat pack" (Garth Brooks, Clint Black, etc.) steamrolled past him. He was still a country radio favorite and strong seller throughout the decade. In 2000, Travis released the hugely successful Inspirational Journey, which combined aspects of traditional country and contemporary worship music. The album was a hit on country radio as well as contemporary Christian outlets. Many of the songs were also featured on Touched by an Angel, in which Travis also guest-starred. Travis has since released country/Christian albums in rapid succession: Worship and Faith (2003), Passing Through (2004) and Glory Train (2005). In 2008, he released the CD/DVD Around the Bend.

Conway Twitty cut his musician's teeth in the 1950s as a rock 'n' roll singer, but eventually found home in the rootsy, yet accessible, country music that gave him celebrity in the 1970s and 1980s. His deep, rural vocal inflections gave Nashville some of the most amazingly sung ballads of the country pop era. Lyrically ladened with double entendre, Twitty's sensual songs made him the Tom Jones of country music (rhinestone panties, anyone?). Of greater importance was his courageous risk-taking in a city that hardly tolerates experimenting with musical crosses. Twitty's personalized country is a slick hybrid of R&B shuffles and steady rock 'n' roll backbeats soaked in note-bending twang and cascading melodies--all engineered to make women swoon.

There is no larger force in Southern gospel music than Bill and Gloria
Gaither. They've branched out with individual albums and vocal group combos, and are singly responsible for sustaining the power of distinctive, old-fashioned Southern gospel harmonies. But the Gaithers' largest contribution continues to be their Reunion tours featuring the voices and personalities fans have quite literally grown to love over the years: Vestal Goodman, Mark Lowry, George Beverly Shea, and so many more. The concerts are like no others. The stage is covered with the extended "family" all singing at once, delivering unmistakable Southern harmonies and creating a very unique environment of awe and praise. When the concerts stop, the Gaither's hymns -- already in every hymnal across the nation -- remain an indispensable gift.

Best known for their 1981 monster crossover smash "Elvira" with its unmistakable basso profundo "oom papa mow mow" part, this band's career actually began in the late 1940s. They started out as a straight country Gospel group, developing tight harmonies and an even tighter stage show through constant touring. The lineup of the band that most people are most familiar with began to coalesce in the late '60s. William Lee Golden, Joe Bonsall, Duane Allen and Richard Sterban had begun singing secular music in earnest and subsequently became one of the biggest vocal groups in country music.

The Statler Brothers smooth four-part harmony is modeled on the tradition of Gospel Quartet singing, which usually includes a lead, bass, tenor and baritone vocal. The group, together for more than four decades, only had two brothers in the group and no one was actually named Statler. The group had a crossover hit with the song "Flowers on the Wall" in 1965 which made both the Country and the Pop charts. The band were consistently in the charts in the '70s and '80s and made numerous Gospel recordings as well as the secular music that made them superstars.

Along with the drugged-out Blues Rock of J.J. Cale, Delaney & Bonnie were another great influence on Eric Clapton's music in the 1970s. This musical and married couple were the Bonnie & Clyde of late 60s and early 70s Roots rock. Delaney & Bonnie's musical heists often involved an incestuous gang of guest musicians such as Clapton, Leon Russell, Gram Parsons, Carl Radle and Bobbie Whitlock (who later formed Derek & The Dominoes with Clapton), Rita Coolidge, Duane Allman, Jesse Ed Davis, Dave Mason and many others. When Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett's marriage dissolved in 1972, the group subsequently fell apart. The two were most popularly known for their passionate live (as well as recorded) vocal harmonies, where they would lovingly share one microphone and sing into each other's eyes.

Not only is Doyle Lawson revered as a prodigy of the mandolin, but he is also credited with popularizing the integration of gospel-style vocals in bluegrass music. He grew up singing gospel and taught himself how to play banjo, guitar and mandolin at the young age of 11. In the early 1960s he picked banjo for a stringband known as Jimmy Martin & the Sunny Mountain Boys before picking up his mandolin and joining J.D. Crowe & the Kentucky Mountain Boys a few years later. The early '70s brought Lawson a near-decade tenure with the Country Gentlemen, a stalwart traditional bluegrass outfit. In 1979, only he formed Quicksilver, a bluegrass outfit that was even more steeped in gospel tradition; by then Lawson had proclaimed himself saved by the Lord and was inflamed with a sense of mission. His love for God put a noticeable amount of feeling and power into his pristine harmonies, as heard on 1998's Gospel Radio Gems, which focused more on gospel and much less on bluegrass. The cool thing about that album is that it was recorded using the traditional approach of playing and singing live into only one (vintage) microphone. Lawson continues to record and perform spiritual-laden bluegrass with Quicksilver and also hosts the annual Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver bluegrass festival in Denton, North Carolina.

Wanda Jackson began her recording career in the early 1950s with a series of releases that emphasized her country beginnings. After relocating from Oklahoma to Los Angeles, she adopted a wilder persona, and an early tour with Elvis Presley convinced her that the spirited sounds of rockabilly were better suited to her. Tracks like "Riot In Cell Block #9," "Fujiyama Mama" and "Mean Mean Man" show Jackson in top form, growling, shrieking and generally creating some of the best rock 'n' roll of the '50s. She toned down her material a bit in the '60s, and by the '70s she was in the Christian circuit. She stayed away from her early rock 'n' roll sounds until the '90s, when she was spurred on by a growing interest in her older recordings and began to tour, bringing her singular approach to rockabilly, country and gospel back into the limelight.

The Carter Family were the earliest innovators of Bluegrass and country music, writing and arranging many popular, pastoral songs that are still standards today. Before their time, the genre was mostly known for its hayseed, hillbilly instrumental songs. The Carter Family took Celtic and Appalachian folk standards under public domain and rearranged them with a new type of guitar picking and harmonic vocal melodies, creating a new repertoire of lovelorn ballads, blues standards and Gospel hymns. The haunting, ashen vocal harmonies of Alvin Pleasant Delaney Carter (or A.P. as he liked to be called), his wife Sara and sister Maybelle began in 1927 when the trio first formed with Sara on the acoustic guitar or autoharp, A.P. on vocals (and sometimes fiddle) and Maybelle on an acoustic Gibson L-5. Her innovative guitar playing alone set the standard for today's vein of country guitar picking. Among the recordings available here are previously out-of-print cuts from a 1941 performance that was broadcast from the Mexican border with a transmitter too powerful to be legally operated in the U.S.

With few modern adornments, IIIrd Tyme Out perform choice covers and progressive originals powered by the award-winning vocals of founder Russell Moore.

The Angelic Gospel Singers cut their first sides in 1948, often with the Dixie Hummingbirds in attendance, and embarked on a career that has made them favorites across the South to this day. The group's signature sound was marked by the impassioned lead vocals of Margaret Allison and also by the inclusion of a male voice. Over the years, the lineup has seen some changes, and stylistically the Singers have gravitated towards a strong Contemporary feel. But one doesn't need to listen very close to hear the merits that have garnered them a large and devoted following.

Credited as a guitarist, dobro, and bass player as well as producer on a host of releases since 1990 -- not to mention recording his own material -- Jezzro appears to be a jack of all trades. His solo work is largely instrumental and primarily focused on country music, covering neo-traditionalism, gospel hymnal music, and most recently Brazilian jazz.

Born and raised in Alabama's Appalachian Mountains, Charlie and Ira Louvin were a Close Harmony Brother Act inspired by many of the family-strung Country Folk bands of the 1930s. The Louvins influenced a number of country and Cosmic American Music artists including Emmylou Harris and The Byrds whose cover of the Brothers' "The Christian Life" is now a country cult staple. Charlie's passionate and watery melody tenor voice matched with brother Ira's pristine high tenor inflections so unusually well that the duo could easily weave in and out of folk, Gospel, pop, or hillbilly songs and still leave their signature sound up front. After being rejected nearly ten times, the Louvins were finally invited to join the Grand Ole Opry in 1955 where their fan base snowballed until they disbanded in 1963 to follow separate solo careers. Songs like the lighthearted "Cash on the Barrel Head" as well as the bible thumping "Satan Is Real" have become near standards of the No Depression generation. Ira Louvin died in 1965. He was killed in a car accident in Williamsburg, Missouri. Infamous for the artwork on the cover of their "Satan Is Real" album (featuring Charlie and Ira Louvin in a burning hell running from a hovering cardboard cutout of the devil), the Louvin Brothers sang in harmony like no other Brother Act. Their close-harmonies often birthed a ghostly third harmonic overtone that sounded almost as eerie as their spooky murder ballads. And perhaps their eclectic take on country music was what inspired such other twangy luminaries as Gram Parsons. If listening to the Louvins' blood curdling rendition of "Knoxville Girl" doesn't make your hair stand on end, check yourself into the nearest faith healer and be saved.

You have Paul Overstreet to thank for the wonderful Randy Travis hit "Forever and Ever, Amen," a song destined for permanent play on wedding days and karaoke nights. Overstreet got his start as a songwriter, penning hits for George Jones and Tanya Tucker before Travis' hit with "Forever." In 1986, Overstreet embarked on a solo career, hitting No. 1 with "Baby's Got a New Baby," and he's remained a figure on the Neo-Traditional front ever since. Overstreet's records have often explored the issues of his faith, and he is as well known as a Country Gospel performer as he is a young Country Pop star.

Smith, who has often been compared vocally to the late great Patsy Cline, was one of the most successful female country artists of the 1960s and early '70s. She is a prime example of the Nashville Sound, and many of her records were produced by Nashville Sound architect Chet Atkins. Her first record went to No. 1 in the country charts, and she stayed near the top for most of the '60s. When her star began to fade somewhat, she launched a new and successful career as a Gospel singer.

Jeannie C. Riley is best known for "Harper Valley P.T.A," a cut from a strange little concept album that became an instant classic and spawned a TV movie a few years later with belly-button queen Barbara Eden playing the "liberated" mom outraged at her uptight, two-faced townsfolk. Riley's got a sharp, nasal voice with a pronounced twang, well suited to country music. In the mid '70s, she turned to God and has since had a stable career in CCM, singing country-flavored Gospel songs with a polished but rootsy backing band.

When the Band dropped the immortal Music from Big Pink in 1968, the album turned hippie rock inside out. Just about every musician of note traded in his paisley pants and sitar for buckskin fringe and a pedal steel. It was the whole getting-back-to-the-country thing, and the Talbot brothers, Terry and John Michael, were no exception. After disbanding their garage-rock outfit, Chicago's Sounds Unlimited, the pair put together Mason Proffit, a quintet fusing folk-rock, country and high-concept lyrics laced with Native American mysticism, Gnostic Christianity and Western Americana. But despite a high-profile signing to Warner Bros. and a national tour with the Grateful Dead, none of the Proffit's five albums sold well. That's a darn shame, because the band swung harder than most of the West Coast's country-rock heavies. Terry, meanwhile, crooned as if he'd grown up listening to Loretta Lynn and Merle Haggard. Mason Proffit disbanded in 1973, but not before making a huge impression on a couple of upstarts in California. Yessir, the Eagles' desperado/outlaw image owes a lot to the brothers Talbot. So if you want to pass Country Rock 101, you need a serious dose of the Proffit.

As a longtime member of Country Gospel pioneers the Happy Goodman Family, Vestal Goodman's twangy, soulful voice won her the Dove Award for Female Vocalist of the Year in 1969. In 1997 she released a pair of solo records that stand as a testament to her aged, yet still powerful, singing voice. Vintage country arrangements and an unidentified -- but very George Jones-sounding -- duet partner bolster her talents and put her Country Gospel output among the very best of the genre.

Singer and songwriter Mike Farris made a splash in the midst of the grunge heyday with his band, The Screamin' Cheetah Wheelies. They had a top-ten hit with "Shakin' The Blues" in 1994 but dissolved after the follow-up LP. After the band's demise Farris released one solo record, 2003's Goodnight Sun, had a short run fronting Double Trouble, and battled litany drug addictions. After a nearly fatal overdose, he found religion and issued the funky, soulful gospel rock album Salvation in Lights in 2007.

Martin is a Bluegrass and country fiddle player whose virtuoso chops earned him sideman positions with artists including Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs and country star Kitty Wells. Martin, a member of the Grand Ole Opry, is a wonderful singer, with a warm baritone voice and a casual, laid-back delivery. Martin is at home with dazzlingly fast Bluegrass as well as country ballads. He is also known for inventing an 8-string violin which used doubled strings in a way similar to that of a mandolin.
