Are you, do you have, or have you recently been around an eight-year-old girl? Then you know who Miley Cyrus is. In fact, we'd bet the young star of the Disney Channel's Hannah Montana has been an omnipresent part of your life since 2006, when her series about a regular girl who leads a secret double life as a pop star named Hannah Montana premiered, and Cyrus became tween America's biggest star. She has talent in spades: she sings, she dances, she wears couture. On top of all that, she's apparently the most well-adjusted celebrity in the world, thanks in part to her mom and her famous dad (one Mr. Billy Ray Cyrus of "Achy Breaky Heart" fame, who is also her Hannah Montana costar), who've helped her become an icon for how to do child stardom (and, for that matter, being a teenager) right simply by not spoiling their famous spawn rotten. So don't think Miley Cyrus is just going to be another young flame that burns out early. With several successful Hannah soundtracks, a tour opening for the Cheetah Girls and a Top 20 hit on the grownup pop charts (2007's "See You Again") under her belt at just 15, this girl's future looks bright.

As much as we would like to see a steel cage match between Raffi, Barney, and the Teletubbies, we know who would win. That is, we know who should win. Raffi is one of the few true heroes and role models that kids have left. Since 1976, he has been a tireless champion of children and has made millions of lifetime friends in the process. Never once has he compromised his vision of entertaining kids in a constructive, nurturing way that involves both fun and education. Songs like "The More We Get Together," "Baby Beluga" and "Bananaphone" have left a lasting impression on our culture, a feat few artists, let alone singers for children, have accomplished. Raffi is a vocal proponent of environmental issues, and has done his best to communicate his love of living things to his young audience. To top it off, he refuses to play arenas that house more than three thousand people, and he keeps his ticket prices under ten dollars. Punk rock.

Razor and Tie's bizarre, faceless conglomeration of anonymous kid singers releases albums at a dizzying pace -- sometimes as often as every few months -- combing the current chart hits for inspiration. How they reproduce these hits varies: sometimes the Kidz shout the chorus as the original track plays in the background; sometimes they shout along to a digital recreation of the original. The scheme's legality is fairly questionable -- does Usher know he appears on Kidz Bop 8? Besides, the song choices can be head-scratchingly weird. Hearing a bunch of 10 year-olds scream, "Where's my candy? Where's my cream?" behind Baby Bash's lascivious rap on Frankie J's "Obsession" -- or singing along to Britney Spear's "Toxic" or Outkast's "Hey Ya" -- raises both aesthetic and ethical questions. Nevertheless, the series is popular with the kids as it brings chart hits down to their level.

Madacy Entertainment put together this anonymous group of child singers to appeal to parents looking for kid-friendly music. They've cashed in: The group's flood of albums cover all the bases, including Christmas music, toddler classics, so-called "silly" songs, film favorites and anything else that strikes their fancy. Unlike some children's groups who record ten albums of religious songs for every collection of nursery rhymes, the Countdown Kids come off as fairly secular.

It's hard to imagine childhood (and even adulthood) without a spoonful of Disney to help make life's discoveries, curiosities, struggles and fears go down just a little more smoothly. No one dreams bigger than the magic men and women behind the Walt Disney brand, which has made a world of fantasy a blockbuster reality. Since its founding in 1923, the company has grown into a global empire with Mickey Mouse eclipsing any head of state in popularity. Mickey, Bambi, Mary Poppins, Tigger, Nemo, Ariel, Pocahontas, Simba, Aladdin, Belle and a seemingly infinite gang of yapping animals and magical princesses populate the Disney landscape, with flesh-and-blood Homo sapiens like Hans Zimmer (Pirates of the Caribbean), Elton John (The Lion King), Celine Dion (Beauty and the Beast), Vanessa Williams (Pocahontas), Julie Andrews (Mary Poppins) and Randy Newman (Toy Story) providing the fantastical soundtracks to these characters' timeless tales.

Though a cartoon about a deep-sea dwelling sea sponge and his motley group of Nickelodeon cohorts doesn't seem to exactly have, well, an agenda, don't waste your breath trying to convince the right-wing Christian group Focus on the Family of that. The group took on the square-breeched cartoon character after the We Are Family Foundation (WAFF) sent some elementary schools a cartoon video that showed SpongeBob (and other sundry characters like Winnie the Pooh and Bob the Builder) singing about tolerance and diversity. Sniffing out a buried homosexual agenda -- perhaps because SpongeBob occasionally holds hands with his starfish friend Patrick -- Focus on the Family launched a campaign to halt the dissemination of the videos. While the campaign doesn't seem to have made a dent in the show's popularity, it may have sparked a rash of hand-holding incidents between young children and starfish.

Cukes and tomatoes with a Christian bent? It can happen, and animated vegetables like Bob and Larry of the successful VeggieTales movies prove it. Fortunately, morality isn't all that's on these characters' minds -- otherwise they'd be headed for the compost, and fast. Though most shows and films center around a moral quandary and how to address it (or retell Bible stories), the show also delves into silly songs, covers of '70s pop and traditional toddler tunage.

Laurie Berkner didn't set out to become a children's performer, and that
might provide in some small way an explanation for her success. As a member
of an all-woman cover band and an aspiring songwriter, Berkner had been
deeply involved in music since her youth. But it wasn't until she turned her
hand to writing children's music -- thanks in part to her work as a music
specialist at New York-area preschools -- that she uncovered a deep vein of
previously unrealized creativity. Her creations struck a chord with the
pint-sized set, and since then, she has made a living releasing music that
appeals to children without pandering to them. She released her debut,
Whaddaya Think Of That? in 1997, joined by husband Brian Mueller on
bass and Susie Lampert on keyboards. She formed her own record company, Two
Tomatoes, for her 1998 sophomore effort Buzz Buzz. By the time she
released her third album, the buzz had become so loud she garnered a
national distribution deal. Her first album was remastered and released on
CD, generating rave reviews in children's press and setting off an avalanche
of awards as well as primping the Laurie Berkner Band for its weekly
appearance on NOGGIN's Jack's Big Music Show.

They started out as a pub rock band in Australia in the 1980s, and two decades later the babes may have dried up, but the babies have come out in droves. Anthony Field and Jeff Fatt had enjoyed a few Top 40 hits as part of the Cockroaches in the 1980s, but when that gig dried up, Field enrolled in an early childhood education program. Recognizing the dearth of good children's music available at the time, Field enlisted Fatt and a few other musicians in the program to try their hand at making kids' music. Applying what they'd learned about childhood development to their songs and act proved a winning combination. ABC Records picked up their self-produced debut, and the act added a few animal characters to help them appeal to youngsters. But in truth, the Wiggles' appeal is not so academic: blazing through G-rated pop songs that borrow liberally from Lennon-McCartney, they have an immediate, visceral impact on toddlers and their older siblings.

The first arboreal rodents to learn English and perfect tight group harmonies, the Chipmunks scored several novelty hits in the '60s, distinct for their immediately recognizable, pitchshifted vocal technique. Though The Alvin Show premiered in 1961 and only ran one year, records continued to sell. Masters of reinvention, the Chipmunks rallied in 1979 with a brand new television series. A huge hit, the Saturday morning cartoon captured the fancy of an entirely new generation of children and fueled the sale of yet more albums, from the hilarious Chipmunk Punk (1980) to The A-files: Alien Songs (1998). Though the stuff provides little joy for adults beyond ironic humor or blinky-eyed nostalgia, kids continue to eat it up.

A shambling moose, an amiable penguin, a being named Uniqua -- that combo alone would guarantee success. But the Backyardigans have another weapon in their armory. They exploit the single greatest faculty of childhood: the ability to pretend the backyard is anything, anywhere in the world -- until snack time. The group meets up in their adjoining backyards to go adventuring, and the show explores the resulting imaginary landscapes. This invariably leads to the music that really makes the Backyardigans unique. In their songs you'll hear Afro-beat, disco, calypso and bossa nova, to name just a few genres. Viva the backyard.

Developed specifically with an eye toward getting TV-watching kids off the couch and involved in their entertainment, Dora the Explorer takes pride in modeling a new kind of children's show. Dora's appeal is manifold: she speaks Spanish and English, which makes her a hero to bilingual kids everywhere. And she's an intrepid, curious world resident who gets herself into scrapes and is forced to problem-solve in every episode (with the help of her animal buddies) in order to extricate herself. Of course, kids probably should learn to problem-solve in their own lives rather than watching a cartoon character do it on TV, but these are quibbles. Dora has grabbed many a little girl's heart, and if your English-speaking toddler shouts "Vamanos!" to you the next time you're heading to the park, you know who to thank.

The early '90s gave birth to a new kind of electronic babysitter, in the form of a television show featuring a grown man hiding inside a large purple dinosaur costume. To the delight of small children with messy faces and soggy bottoms, Barney sang songs that were easy enough to learn and catchy enough to drive the parents of these small children somewhat irate (perhaps a passive/aggressive karma for parking a child in front of the tube). Barney's slow-tempered singing was similar to that of Disney character Goofy, and by the late '90s his endearing love for all children was upstaged by Michael Jackson's love for all children as well as Great Britain's Teletubbies.

Pete Seeger was famous for playing old hobo country banjo folk songs and socially aware narratives of working-class folks. His union anthems and famous five-string banjo playing has influenced every hootenanny crooner from Greenwich Village to North Beach. Toward the end of the 1930s, he joined forces with the late, great Woody Guthrie and a handful of other musicians to form Almanac Singers. Their aim was to promote unions and come down hard on fascism. In the late 1940s, Seeger formed the Weavers, a folk group who made famous such hits as "Tzena, Tzena, Tzena," Leadbelly's "Goodnight Irene," and "On Top of Old Smokey" before McCarthy-era paranoia put an unceremonious end to their bookings and recording contracts. Today, his contributions to old standards live strong in the interests of folk enthusiasts and anyone who has ever been moved by songs such as "We Shall Overcome," "If I Had a Hammer," and "Turn! Turn! Turn!" a Seeger penned ditty that became a gigantic radio hit when the song was covered by West Coast Folk Rockers, the Byrds.

Used to be, every kid wanted to be a pop star when she or he grew up. Now every kid just wants to have his or her own Webcast, apparently. Or at least that's the concept behind iCarly, new 'tween sensation-in-the-making Miranda Cosgrove's Nickelodeon vehicle. Cosgrove stars as Carly, just a normal eighth grader who happens to live with her wacky older brother, a sculptor, in his super-cool artist's loft while her parents are overseas. Oh yeah, and she broadcasts her own Web show. So where does the music come in? Well, 14-year-old Cosgrove sings "Leave It All to Me," the theme song to iCarly, but she also got her start in music at age three, when she started singing and dancing the Taste of L.A. restaurant and impressed an agent who was dining there. From there, she went on to commercials, a part in School of Rock (she played bossy boots Summer Hathaway), guest-starring gigs on several Nickelodeon shows and a starring role as the bratty kid sister on Nick's Drake and Josh, which led to iCarly.

This family act started when Polly Draper (an actress best known for her work in the TV series thirtysomething) created, wrote and directed a movie centered around her two musical sons Nat and Alex Wolff. Filmed as a mockumentary, the film spun off a Nickolodeon series by the same name. Both the film and the series spoof the trappings of celebrity, chronicling the kids as they make music, cope with fame and battle addictions to soda pop. Dad (and former Arsenio Hall Show bandleader) Michael Wolff also produces the show. But most remarkable are the young brothers: Nat actually does write the songs, which are performed by himself, his little brother Alex, Cole Hawkins, Allie DiMeco, Joshua Kaye, Thomas Batuello, and David Levi. The songs are quite catchy, and the boys sing, it has to be said, beautifully.

The original "King of All Media," (sorry, Howard Stern) Burl Ives brought his lovable Santa personality to radio, the silver screen, Broadway and of course, folk music. Best known for children's classics like "Goober Peas" and "On Top of Old Smoky," Burl Ives brought folk music to the pop charts while also fighting to keep historical folk a permanent part of American culture.

Fans of Richard Brautigan, get your hopes down -- while the band is named for his novel, the similarities end there. The songwriting duo of Keith Grimwood and Ezra Idlet met in 1979 as part of a folk-rock band named St. Elmo's Fire. The group broke up soon after, and T.F.I.A. was born, a collaboration that enabled Grimwood and Idlet to explore their love of acoustic music. It so happened most of the songs they dug were also kid-friendly, and they've enjoyed multiple Grammy nominations in the Children's Music category over the years.

The greatest invention of human recorded history was not the wheel or the automobile or the airplane or the telephone. No, the greatest invention of all time was the Children's Television Workshop. It was these fine people as well as the late, great Jim Henson who brought Sesame Street to small children all over the world. Not only did this amazing children's show involve various foam-based creatures teaching children the rudimentary foundations of reading, writing and arithmetic—it brought (and continues to bring) good music to the table. Have you ever heard Johnny Cash sing "Nasty Dan" with Oscar the Grouch? Have you disco danced to "Sesame Street Fever," complete with a "Rubber Ducky Techno Remix?" Even squeaky little Elmo has something to sing about using his imagination. Whether you have kids of your own or you're getting in touch with your inner child, Sesame Street will always remain a wonderful place to come back and visit again and again.

They started out as a playful kids' music outfit in New Orleans in 2003. After three well-received albums, Disney released Imagination Movers' national debut, Juice Box Heroes, in 2008. Disney also gave them a television show, which features the members of the band solving "idea emergencies" in their idea warehouse -- all set to seriously fun musical romps that encompass funk, rap, ska and everything else you once thought didn't belong in children's music.

Ella Jenkins is just what a good children's musician should be: motherly, wise, a relentless enunciator -- and strict in that crisp, Mary Poppins way. A tireless advocate for children and an entertainer who draws upon diverse cultures to enrich her repertoire, Jenkins grew up in the Chicago of the 1930 and '40s. While a child, she developed a love for music, particularly the blues, and she also became a sponge of sorts, soaking up all the children's rhymes and games in her neighborhood. After a stint at junior college, Jenkins studied sociology, child psychology and recreation at San Francisco State University. When she returned to Chicago, she accepted a job working with teenagers at the local YMCA. That job led to a gig performing on achildren's TV show, and pretty soon her performing career took off, so she quit the Y to devote herself to music full-time. For the next 50 years, Jenkins performed almost nonstop, recording children's songs and games from around the world, as well as a host of African American children's songs. Jenkins emphasizes participation in her performances, drawing on the global tradition of call-and-response to bring children into the performance. The performer won a Lifetime Achievement Grammy in 2004, in acknowledgement of her significant contribution to enriching children's music.

Their musical recordings are just one part of Kidzup's educational strategy, which includes a huge range of learning tools to give enterprising preschoolers a leg up on the competition. But let's face it, the songs are probably the most fun. From classical lullabies to Mother Goose rhymes, these nicely produced songs take a few liberties with the classics but always leave them recognizable for young listeners. And Kidzup donates a portion of its proceeds to immunize and feed the world's less fortunate children.
