When you grow up in Lafayette, La., you pretty much have to go out of your way to find bad food or bad music, as Marc Broussard can attest to. The son of Ted Broussard (guitar player for the Boogie Kings) never had to go far to be surrounded by a myriad of musicians of all styles (albeit mostly Cajun or roots-related). Perhaps that's why traces of Dr. John, a young Lee Dorsey and various other soulful singers can be heard in his voice. His sound is more twangy than tangy, but not as full-blown "alt country" as someone like Jay Farrar.

Tab Benoit plays tone-heavy, swampy Blues Rock. His soulful, wailing, gritty voice is one of the best of recent artists, anywhere. If you play his music next to CCR for someone who hasn't heard either band, they would probably think that John Fogerty (who has a spectacular voice of his own) was greatly influenced by Benoit. Yeah, he's that good. His combustible guitar playing is rugged and riff-laden. It sounds like an old Fender Telecaster from the 1950's burning through a vintage tweed Deluxe amp at full volume (a-la CCR's rendition of "Good Golly, Miss Molly").

Marcia Ball is one of the best-known artists to come out of the fertile Louisiana-Texas delta that spawned such greats as Janis Joplin and Lonnie Brooks. Her Boogie-Woogie piano playing draws from Swamp Rock and Zydeco to achieve a unique flavor, while her songwriting always returns to the blues. Authentically southern and unforced, these tracks illustrate Ball's great feel for both slow blues and Boogie-Woogie. Her smoky, intriguing vocals do justice to every tune, while the piano swings mischievously behind her. A southern artist to her core, Ball draws on the best music of her region to impressive effect.

Gatemouth was a Texas legend who played as many kinds of music as he did instruments. A true master of the blues guitar, adept with violin, harmonica, bass, and drums, as well as a fine, rough singer, Brown had never been content to be pigeonholed into any one style. Calypso, jazz, country and blues are all mixed into his folky, funky, roots-driven sound, which benefits from the breadth of his instrumental prowess. His originally stinging, trebly tone on the guitar (which was to influence the great bluesmen Albert Collins and Johnny Copeland) developed into a smoother, jazzier sound over the years and couldn't really be compared to anyone else. Brown was just as happy fiddling a hoedown, writing a blues number with biting lyrics, or playing a Big Band jazz chart. Fans kept him on the road and in the studio until illness started slowing him down in 2002. At age 81, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown survived Hurricane Katrina, only to pass away a week later from a combination of lung cancer and heart disease. You can hear the influence of his guitar in the music of everyone from Stevie Ray Vaughan to Brian Setzer.

It's difficult not to be swept away by the infectious, frenetic groove of Buckwheat Zydeco. The Creole-style hybrid Zydeco was born when Clifton Chenier took traditional African-American music from Louisiana, played on accordion and fiddle, and added a full-scale, amplified R&B rhythm section. Buckwheat Zydeco continued that tradition, and have become the most successful artists of the genre since Chenier's death. Some of their material points directly towards R&B, with shuffle beats, punchy horn lines, and classic Electric Blues riffs. Other tunes are straight ahead pounding two-step that aims to cleanse your soul by working your body to the bone. And through it all, lead singer Stanley Dural remains one of the genre's strongest voices, with a muscular baritone growl and undeniable charisma.

Katie Webster first came to prominence in the 1950s, when both her over-the-top persona and ham-fisted blues piano style were regarded as Louisiana state treasures. A period of semi-obscurity was broken in the mid-1980s when she recorded a whopper of a comeback album supported by such big names as Robert Cray and Bonnie Raitt. While Webster is best known for her lethal left hand and ebullient Swamp Blues flourishes, she is also an accomplished singer, performing standards and originals with her trademark delivery.

He's been churning out swampy tunes with the pulsing energy of his native Louisiana since the mid-1950s. Lester's music is rooted in the steady-rollin' style of Jimmy Reed and Slim Harpo, employing similar rhythms in infectious songs, often backed by a full band.
Queen Ida seemed to come out of nowhere during the 1980s to become the leading ambassador of Cajun music. She may have been a short, granny glasses-wearing grandmother, but man, she could rock harder than three metal bands in a Bloomington quarry. Her domain is good-time zydeco music and she shows how a positive vibe can be as complex and vibrant as a classical lament. Ida brings elements of black, white, American, French, country, blues and rock together to make something joyous and unique. The fact that all this wonderful music pours out of a little old lady with an accordion only makes it more special.

A certified New Orleans classic, blessed with serious blues guitar skills. After losing his sight as a youngster, Eaglin put his efforts into developing the ability to play in many styles, earning a spot in Allen Toussaint's first band, and later gigs with artists such as Professor Longhair. Eaglin began by playing acoustic, finger-picked blues on the streets of New Orleans, accompanied by washboard and blues harp, before he got himself an R&B-flavored Soul band and lit up the town with his ripping electric guitar solos. His acoustic playing is earthy with dexterous picking, while his electric tone is meaty and thick without relying on distortion. Vocally, Eaglin has a Ray Charles-influenced style that's fortified with a bit of a bayou accent.

Barbara Lynn is best known for her 1962 hit "You'll Lose a Good Thing," one of the most resigned-to-sadness songs ever recorded. The song is all about dim red lights and slowly smoked cigarettes, an essential point in the R&B timeline where blues, rock 'n' roll, and the coming decade of Soul met. Mid-way through the '60s, she also charted with "You Left the Water Running," another great R&B tune that saw excellent interpretation in the hands of Otis Redding. Over the years, Lynn crept closer and closer to Soul Blues, and her latest recordings for both Atlantic and Bullseye Blues Records showcase her deft guitar playing and the expressive, deep-soul voice she's loved for. Although she's not the household name that fellow New Orleans-style crooner Irma Thomas is, Lynn is so cool she warranted her own Bear Family boxed set. That says it all.

Although his discography doesn't quite reflect a man of legend, Neal's recorded performances do. His first recordings were made at the tail end of the '50s, but these were just a few scattered 45 RPM singles. Still, these early recordings showed a man of promise (not to mention an appreciation for Little Walter). His first full-length recording wouldn't be released until 1990. By this time, Neal would be known more as the father of Kenny, Noel, Jackie and Raful Jr. (all accomplished musicians). Certainly, the new material is no match for his early fire, but it definitely shows a talent undiminished.

Louisiana blues artist Lightnin' Slim used his sandpaper-rough yet expressive voice and raw, kinetic electric guitar playing to become a regional hit maker and an exemplar of the Excello Records sound in the late 1950s and early '60s. Coincidentally -- considering his stage name -- Slim's sound falls somewhere between the rough and tumble blues of Lightnin' Hopkins and the slightly smoother, more broad-based sound of sometime labelmate Slim Harpo. Slim benefited greatly from the blues revival of the '60s, playing concerts and festivals at home and in Europe until his death in 1974.

Highly danceable blues from a respected guitar player and former sideman for Zydeco lynchpin Clifton Chenier. Robertson cut his teeth on the road with some of the greats of Cajun music, and his solo material reflects the attention to groove characteristic of that most party-down-friendly of genres. With a lead guitar method that's liable to saw your ears off with explosive, one-note bursts and Buddy Guy-style vamps, Sherman Robertson turns it up to ten and never lets up. Although his early records had a tough time capturing the feel of his blazing live show, Going Back Home (1998) comes as close as a recording can to doing so, with gritty production values and a stunning display of the red-hot Zydeco/Texas Blues amalgamation for which he's known.
