The undisputed king of the blues, B.B. "Blues Boy" King will go down in history as one of the most important electric guitarists and blues singers ever. King's vocals are smooth and rich as they emote wailing cries and good-hearted humor, while every sound he plays on the guitar is instantly recognizable by his distinct vibrato, vocal guitar style and authorship of hundreds of the most classic blues riffs. Drawing on the single-note playing of T-Bone Walker, King's style has influenced several of the greatest rock, blues and jazz artists of the latter half of the twentieth century, including Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan, among others. Most important is the fact that, with one note, B.B. King can tell a story that touches the deepest roots of your soul.

From the mid-1950s to the present, Etta James' powerful, soul-charged voice has become deeper and rougher, with a rich texture and heartfelt inflections. It goes without saying that the woman known as "Mama" is aging like California wine, and she can still open wounds in her songs and come out standing strong. When she was five years old, Jamesetta Hawkins amazed the congregation of her church choir. When she belted out Gospel songs with absolute spiritual fervor, it was clear that the child was a musical prodigy. Her career as a singer began when she recorded "The Wallflower" with Johnny Otis in 1954 for Modern Records. A year later, the song topped the charts. In 1960, she moved to Chess Records and soon began cranking out hits such as the driving, jiving, southern soul smash "Tell Mama," which Janis Joplin covered later that decade. Since then, she has recorded for Island and Elektra, experimenting with rock and jazz, but always returning to her Gospel-soaked roots and southern soul.

Here is a man who has closely studied and preserved the roots music of African Americans since he began playing the Boston folk scene in the 1960s. He studied the history and formulas of Caribbean, West African, Zydeco, rock, jazz, and R&B. In fact, it was always the music of Country Blues that has influenced most of his own music. After learning how to play a multitude of instruments, Taj Mahal moved to Los Angeles and teamed up with Ry Cooder to form the Rising Sons, who split after one single was released (more songs from these sessions were released in the 1990s). Taj Mahal finally recorded his first solo album in 1968, shortly before playing an incredible performance of the Banks/Parker hit, "Ain't That a Lot of Love" on the Rolling Stones' Rock & Roll Circus with the late, great Jessie Ed Davis on lead guitar. Following what his fans believe to be his prime years, Taj Mahal went on to experiment with whatever music genre he was infatuated with at the time, and also wrote some scores for the stage as well as television and film. Those who know his music well can testify that when he played Country Blues, the Taj was at his best. His rich soulful singing has an ultra-deep dynamic range that fits perfectly with the driving shuffle-beats and bass bounce of this particular blues subgenre.

One of the few bluesmen who's solely known for his singing, Bobby "Blue" Bland has been a major player in blues since the mid-1950s. Often working with B.B. King, and always showcasing a voice that can be as smooth a silk one minute and deeply tortured the next, Bland had a string of hits in the '50s and '60s. Early on, his work was straight-up Texas country, but as he aged his music and singing style laid much of the groundwork for what's called "soul blues" today.

Albert King's 6'4" stature was dwarfed only by the massive sound he made when he wrapped his huge hands around a Flying V guitar, pulling rather than pushing on the strings due to his left-handed, upside-down approach. King's trademark wailing blues guitar complemented his deep, heavy vocals, either one of which could touch your soul. Among his greatest admirers were Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix and especially Stevie Ray Vaughan, each of whom pilfered many of King's famous licks and passed them on to new generations. The imitation didn't faze King, who confidently reassured his followers that he could outplay any one of them on any given night. On his classic hit "Born Under a Bad Sign," King was backed by Booker T. and the MG's, who provided a Stax Soul foundation that he drew upon for many of his later hits. Though King is somewhat underappreciated, the majority of rock and blues guitar players know the man's riffs, if not his name.

One of the three Kings of electric guitar, Freddy (or Freddie) co-owned many of the most classic blues riffs with B.B. and Albert. He got a slightly rawer sound than his fellow Kings, playing bright, snappy licks plucked with thumb and fingers on his Fender Stratocaster. Although he was born in Texas, King had more of a Chicago Blues sound, drawing influence from artists such as Robert Lockwood Jr. and Jimmy Rogers. Defining his style early, King had initial success with instrumentals like "Hideaway." His rough, loud, powerful vocals came later, when he started belting out songs like "Big Legged Woman." Eric Clapton was one of the most notable performers influenced by King, basing his entire sound on a love for King's music. Live in concert was the best way to experience the original, who tore up the stage with his large and slashing guitar presence.

Known as both a stinging blues guitarist and a powerful Soul singer, this Mississippi native has long made a name for himself by combining the best of those two worlds. Since the 1950s, he's recorded for top-notch labels like Sun, Chess, Stax, and Malaco, alternating between straight Electric Blues (most of his Sun catalog), horn-driven, Funk-tinged Soul Blues ("That's What Love Will Make You Do"), and pure Memphis soul ("Grits Ain't Groceries (All Around the World)"). Throughout his career, he's proven able to adapt his blues-rooted sensibilities to a variety of settings, without losing that all-important visceral quality.

The prodigiously gifted son of legendary band leader Johnny Otis sprang to fame in the late '60s and early '70s while still a teenager. Although he could play numerous instruments, he is probably most closely identified as a guitarist. His playing is an amalgam of blues styles reflecting a love for players like B.B. King and Johnny "Guitar" Watson. He issued numerous albums of R&B and West Coast blues, and the Brothers Johnson had a million-selling hit record thanks to a cover of his "Strawberry Letter 23" in 1977.

Magic Slim's are some of the deepest blues of all. He was a contemporary of '60s Electric Blues legends Magic Sam and B.B. King, but he labored away in the relative obscurity of the Chicago club circuit for almost twenty years. He finally rose to national prominence in 1977, when he recorded his breakthrough LP, Born Under a Bad Sign. Make no mistake: those years of dues-payin' have given Slim the soul of a warrior. His vocals contain more grit than a barrel of unwashed oysters, and his guitar playing channels raw emotion into scorching, no-nonsense licks drenched in fierce vibrato, which burn down the barn without even so much as a nudge of the distortion pedal. The Teardrops, his backing band, draw from an enormous repertoire that ranges from gut-wrenching slow blues to rag-tag shuffle-boogie, which they play with an expertly honed, off-the-cuff rawness.

Ted Hawkins was a truly original Singer-Songwriter with a voice like Sam Cooke and a slightly skewed lyrical sense. His most memorable songs mirror the upheaval and disappointment of his turbulent life; at the same time, he was capable of gentle emotion and touching revelations -- he could express the most intimate of sentiments without sounding mawkish. The music is equal parts soul and folk with dashes of country in the intricate picking and sometimes forlorn vocals. Hawkins' songs are haunting in their honesty and reveal a deep well of pain in poetic, complex lyrics. A sadly unrecognized Venice Beach street performer for most of his career, Hawkins' big break came way too late and he died of a stroke on the eve of his success. His recordings are undeniably essential -- the only testament to this unique and gifted performer.

Lonnie Mack's locomotive, whammy-crazed guitar has been a genre-transcending musical treasure since his rambling instrumental version of "Memphis" was released back in 1963. After buying one of the first Gibson Flying V's ever made, Mack honed his craft as a session-man for such big names as James Brown and Freddie King. He went on to release the single "Memphis" and a series of critically praised but commercially unsuccessful records featuring his monstrous guitar capabilities and a countrified, grizzly vocal style. The Mack's guitar playing is a dynamic mixture of bluesy soul, Rockabilly stomp and blazing, barely-in-control speed, and it certainly influenced Stevie Ray Vaughan's everything-but-the-kitchen-sink showmanship. Just about every student of the guitar has heard his name; unfortunately few are familiar with his generation-spanning influence.

New Orleans singer Adams' recording career ran from 1959 until his untimely death in 1998. Like so many Soul and R&B singers, he started out singing Gospel music. His first record was produced by Mac Rebennack (aka Dr. John), and throughout the '60s he hit the R&B charts a number of times with his smooth sound and amazingly broad range. Adams made nine albums for Rounder Records starting in the 1980s: he did many of these with his longtime bandleader, guitarist Walter "Wolfman" Washington. These records encompassed everything from jazz and string-laden vocal pop to the grittiest Soul and blues. Adams' reputation among his peers unfortunately exceeded his general popularity in the States, but he was always a big star in New Orleans and abroad. He was felled by cancer at the age of sixty-six.

Percy Mayfield was a great, sophisticated West Coast Blues crooner who was also undoubtedly the finest songwriter in the early R&B field. His subtle vocal style worked perfectly with the despondent, literate lyrics of such wrist-slashing songs as "Memory Pain," "Life is Suicide" and "Hopeless." He was fast becoming a major star in the early 1950s, but a tragic car accident destroyed his handsome looks. Luckily, his voice was as fine as ever and his work was championed by Ray Charles, who recorded acres of his songs, including "Hit the Road Jack." His most recorded song, "Please Send Me Someone to Love" has become a popular and jazz standard.

Toni Lynn Washington is known by many Roots music enthusiasts as Boston's queen of the blues. She got her start singing in Gospel choirs and eventually found herself performing with Jackie Wilson, as well as Sam & Dave. With soulful inflections that trail off in deep, sultry tremolos, Washington's spiritually-influenced vocal style adds an extra dimension of atmosphere to whomever is lucky enough to accompany her.

Barbara Lynn is best known for her 1962 hit "You'll Lose a Good Thing," one of the most resigned-to-sadness songs ever recorded. The song is all about dim red lights and slowly smoked cigarettes, an essential point in the R&B timeline where blues, rock 'n' roll, and the coming decade of Soul met. Mid-way through the '60s, she also charted with "You Left the Water Running," another great R&B tune that saw excellent interpretation in the hands of Otis Redding. Over the years, Lynn crept closer and closer to Soul Blues, and her latest recordings for both Atlantic and Bullseye Blues Records showcase her deft guitar playing and the expressive, deep-soul voice she's loved for. Although she's not the household name that fellow New Orleans-style crooner Irma Thomas is, Lynn is so cool she warranted her own Bear Family boxed set. That says it all.

Jones is a veteran of the Northwest blues and R&B scene, a terrifically sensitive songwriter whose stuff could have come from 1960s Memphis or Detroit, or from great writers like Bobby Charles or Doc Pomus. Intrepid blend of blues and Soul sounds at times like the '60s work of Little Milton, with blaring brass and a swaggering, funky backbeat. The best thing about this artist is the way his soulful vocals and stinging guitar playing work as one seamless instrument.

Though not widely recognized as such, Mighty Joe Young is a Blues giant. One of the first bluesmen to play in the clubs on the North Side of Chicago, Young predated the raucous, distortion-laden histrionics of Jimi Hendrix and Buddy Guy. Young played his electric blues guitar with a sweeter, rounder tone and favored concise rhythmic phrases over walls of sound. He could still stretch out the blues, however, often wringing every possible inflection from each note, or exploding into lightning quick runs. Young's straightforward vocal phrasing and guitar work led a steady rhythm section of piano, bass, and drums, occasionally embellished by a horn section. They played everything from slow, plodding shuffles to up-tempo scorchers. Despite his lack of mainstream acclaim relative to such legends as Muddy Waters, Young was an influential voice in the Blues world. In the 1960s, Jimi Hendrix turned Young's "Rock Me Baby" into a smash hit.

One of the foremost harmonica blowers in all of Modern Blues, Sugar Blue is a more than competent vocalist. His fevered phrasing on the harp led him to do sessions with Muddy Waters, Stan Getz, and the Rolling Stones. Blue's fine session work in the 1970s led to his first solo release in 1980. He has since continued to record his own albums, as well as adding harp to recordings by artists Melvin Taylor and Roosevelt Sykes.

Evans has an extraordinary voice, a gruff rumbling baritone that can be quietly seductive or boisterously raucous. Like so many R&B and blues singers, he got his start in church singing Gospel. In the 1970s he teamed up with singer Bobby King and they worked as a duo, touring and recording on their own and as backup vocalists for Ry Cooder, among others. Since stepping out on his own, Evans has released a series of critically acclaimed solo records that find him mining a deep vein of Soul Blues and growing immeasurably as a songwriter.

Born in Boston, he showed an early affinity for music and began playing professionally while still in his teens. He joined blues great Albert King's band at the age of seventeen and followed that with a seven-year tenure backing B.B. King. He also spent four years in the keyboard chair for the legendary New England-based Roomful of Blues before finally setting out on his own with his band, Wild Kingdom. His records reflect his far-reaching knowledge and swinging, soulful technique on his Jimmy Smith-style grooves, New Orleans R&B, and low-down Electric Blues.
Keyboard player, singer and hit songwriter McCracklin has been recording since 1945. His early recordings were of a Jump Blues/proto R&B hybrid, similar to a lot of music bubbling up in the days just preceding rock 'n' roll. He hit the Top-10 R&B and Pop charts in 1956 with "The Walk." Though he has charted numerous times throughout his career, his biggest hit came in the '60s covering the song "Tramp," first recorded by Rufus and Carla Thomas for the Stax label and later by many other artists, including rappers Salt-N-Pepa. Perhaps the most extraordinary thing about McCracklin is the way his career has segued effortlessly from the '40s into the next millennium.
