Heaven and earth battle it out in the music of Ray Charles, who combined gospel with the best of secular music and helped give birth to soul, rock, and hard bop. His early work showed the silky influences of the Nat "King" Cole trio and the piano blues great Charles Brown. Charles combined their sophisticated styles with R&B and gritty gospel to create his signature sound: hard, snappy piano combined with exquisite vocals that fall somewhere between a preacher gone bad and a yearning romantic balladeer. Charles absorbed styles like a sponge: big band jazz, country and pop were all added to his musical arsenal, and he built up a musical empire that kept him in the public eye for decades up until his untimely death, at the age of 73, in June 2004. Just prior to his passing, Charles cut his first duets record with such fans as Norah Jones, Willie Nelson, and Elton John, which illustrates a multi-generational sampling of the artists who list him as a prime influence. An American institution, Ray Charles' rendition of "Georgia on My Mind" has even become that state's anthem. If only the other 49 states could be as fortunate.

With more than 65 million record sales to his credit, New Orleans singer and pianist Fats Domino out sold every 1950s rock & roll pioneer except Elvis Presley leaving an indelible and profound impact on subsequent generations of musicians.

Born into a musical family, Antoine Domino began playing piano at nine and a year later was playing for pennies in honky-tonks like the Hideaway Club, where bandleader Bill Diamond accurately nicknamed him Fats. At 14 Domino quit school to work in a bedspring factory so he could play the bars at night. Soon he was playing alongside such New Orleans legends as Professor Longhair and Amos Milburn. He also heard the stride and boogie-woogie piano techniques of Fats Waller and Albert Ammons. He mastered the classic New Orleans R&B piano style — easy-rolling left-hand patterns anchoring right-hand arpeggios. By age 20 he was married and a father, had survived a near-fatal car crash, and had almost lost his hand in a factory accident.

In the mid-1940s Domino joined trumpeter Dave Bartholomew's band. It was soon apparent, however, that Domino was more than a sideman, and Bartholomew helped arrange his contract with Imperial and became his producer. Their first session in 1949 produced "The Fat Man," which eventually sold a million and whetted the national appetite for the "New Orleans sound." Bartholomew and Domino co-wrote most of Domino's material.

By the time the rock & roll boom began in the mid-1950s, Fats was already an established R&B hitmaker ("Goin' Home," 1952; "Going to the River," 1953), his records regularly selling between half a million and a million copies apiece. His pounding piano style was easily adapted to the nascent rock sound, although he proved less personally magnetic than contemporaries like Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, or Jerry Lee Lewis, all of whom recorded Domino material.

Domino's big breakthrough came in mid-1955, when the Top 10 "Ain't That a Shame" (quickly covered by Pat Boone and revived in the late-1970s by Cheap Trick) established his identity with white teenagers. For the next five years Domino struck solid gold with "I'm in Love Again" (Number Three), "Blueberry Hill" (Number Two), and "Blue Monday" (Number Five) in 1956; "I'm Walkin'" (Number Four, 1957); "Whole Lotta Loving" (Number Six, 1958); and many others. He eventually collected 23 gold singles. His last million-seller came in 1960 with "Walkin' to New Orleans." He left Imperial for ABC in 1963 and subsequently switched to Mercury, Warner Bros., Atlantic, and Broadmoor, all with less success.

In 1968 Domino revived public interest in his ongoing career with a rollicking cover of the Beatles' "Lady Madonna. The Beatles consistently sang the Fat Man's praises, noting that "Birthday" on The Beatles did little more than sort through the old Domino-Bartholomew bag of riffs and tricks. Through the mid-1970s Fats played six to eight months a year. In 1980 he performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Domino continues to tour sporadically. In 1993 he released his first major-label album in 25 years, Christmas Is a Special Day, to critical acclaim but middling sales. Domino was feared to be dead in the wake of Hurricane Katrina in August 2005 (his mansion was in the middle of the devastated Ninth Ward), but he had been rescued by the Coast Guard via helicopter; the family had lost nearly everything in the storm. In early 2006 Domino released Alive and Kickin', a benefit CD for the local Tipitina's Foundation.

Before making his name as a major New Orleans pianist, Dr. John was known as Mac Rebennack, a successful session guitarist who was forced to find a new instrument after being accidentally shot in the hand. As Dr. John, he garnered a reputation for performing in all-out Mardi Gras regalia, bringing a theatrical aspect to his shows that surprisingly never detracted from his soulful music. His hearty vocals have a thick Louisiana twang filtered through deep, earthy grit, while his rollicking keyboard and piano playing travel from home-style New Orleans R&B and jazz to spaced-out psychedelia, mixed into a secret musical gumbo that no one has quite figured out. He's probably best known for his '70s classic "Right Place, Wrong Time," a song that reached new levels of stripped-down voodoo Funk and was boosted by the help of supreme Cajun groovers, the Meters.

Marcia Ball is one of the best-known artists to come out of the fertile Louisiana-Texas delta that spawned such greats as Janis Joplin and Lonnie Brooks. Her Boogie-Woogie piano playing draws from Swamp Rock and Zydeco to achieve a unique flavor, while her songwriting always returns to the blues. Authentically southern and unforced, these tracks illustrate Ball's great feel for both slow blues and Boogie-Woogie. Her smoky, intriguing vocals do justice to every tune, while the piano swings mischievously behind her. A southern artist to her core, Ball draws on the best music of her region to impressive effect.

Professor Longhair's contribution to the New Orleans musical vocabulary is immeasurable. In addition to penning the standards "Mardis Gras in New Orleans" and "Tipitina," he was a major influence on pretty much every pianist who ever played in that town. His rollicking style is Creole itself, with Rumba, Calypso, and Merengue flourishes all popping up here and there in R&B structures. His wandering yelp of a vocal delivery is almost never on key, but who cares? He embodies the indescribable thing about New Orleans: good music, good times, and the sleazier the better. With an infectious love of his craft, he effortlessly kept in check a sound that was always on the brink of disaster. Unutterably charming, and transcendently cool.

Recognized as one of the greats among Piano Blues artists, Memphis Slim is probably best known for penning the now standard "Every Day I Get The Blues," a song that's been performed at one time or another by just about every blues artist since it hit in 1940. Cutting his own swathe in the teeming blues scene of post-WWII Chicago with a mixture of boogieing barroom blues and uptown jazzy vocals, Memphis Slim effectively bridged the gap between down-and-dirty blues and more socially acceptable forms of jazz. That means white people liked it. His classy, city-slicker-with-a-fifth style gave birth to a host of similar-minded blues pianists.

James Booker's unrelenting piano style made him an important figure in New Orleans music, acting as a major influence on Harry Connick Jr. and Dr. John, among others. Booker was a balanced and versatile pianist and organist -- his repetitive right hand sparkles complemented his awe-inspiring left hand's foundation. In terms of singing, he was no Pavarotti, but his quirky ego and raw, gritty style covered any infirmities. His succinct incorporation of Gospel, R&B and jazz made for a dynamic, personal sound that could make even the same song sound entirely different when Booker reinterpreted himself. In addition to creating his own material, Booker valuably backed Freddy King, Aretha Franklin, T-Bone Walker, Ringo Starr and B.B. King, to name a few. His troubles with the law left us with fewer recordings than we might wish for, but enough to fall in love with his funky, soulful sound.

Katie Webster first came to prominence in the 1950s, when both her over-the-top persona and ham-fisted blues piano style were regarded as Louisiana state treasures. A period of semi-obscurity was broken in the mid-1980s when she recorded a whopper of a comeback album supported by such big names as Robert Cray and Bonnie Raitt. While Webster is best known for her lethal left hand and ebullient Swamp Blues flourishes, she is also an accomplished singer, performing standards and originals with her trademark delivery.

Champion Jack Dupree's New Orleans piano was one of the characteristic sounds of the Okeh record company's classic blues output. Dupree's laid-back Boogie-Woogie and barrelhouse piano style graced many albums, forging a sound that influenced many players, including Fats Domino and Professor Longhair. His singing was deep and sweet, forming a union with his rhythmic piano (and his acoustic guitar or drumming) in songs about the basics: women, drinking and fighting. Highlights of some of his later collaborations include a pre-Bluesbreakers session with John Mayall and Eric Clapton.

Chicago blues piano player Sunnyland Slim was an innovative player, and a prolific recording artist as both a leader and a sideman throughout his professional life, which lasted for more than 50 years. His playing exemplified Chicago blues piano in its combination of percussive attack, rolling, cascading streams of notes, and syncopated rhythmic sophistication. His influence can be traced directly to both of Muddy Waters longtime sidemen Otis Span and Pinetop Perkins. Slim can be heard as a sideman on recordings from Muddy Waters to Chuck Berry, as well as many, many other blues luminaries. And as a singer, he had a big, rough-hewn voice.

Often bolstering his Piano Blues boogie with Gospel-inflected vocals and off-color double meanings, Roosevelt Sykes remains a much loved figure as well as one of the form's idiom-authors. His irreverent, good-time blues is rooted in the rolling stride-style of the pre-war innovator Fats Waller. With the tunes ".44 Blues" and "Night Time is the Right Time" to his credit, coupled with his supernatural mastery of the instrument, he is the standard by which many blues pianists are measured.

Eddie Boyd was a true master of Piano Blues, backing up artists such as Sonny Boy Williamson and writing songs destined to become standards. His classic, "Five Long Years," has been covered by such celebrated bluesmen as B.B. King, Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker. Boyd was a stellar lyricist who sang with a suave, sometimes jazzy delivery, and his piano playing was the perfect accompaniment to his singing. A sparse and rhythmic left hand allowed room for a jabbing and twinkling right which never played more than was needed. Boyd moved to Europe in the mid-1960s to escape the discrimination he experienced in the U.S., eventually settling in Finland where he lived happily performing his boogie piano and singing his classic blues to appreciative crowds.

After Albert Ammons, Lewis is probably the best-known musician associated with the late 1930s Boogie-Woogie piano revival. He actually made his first recordings in the 1920s, including the original version of his signature "Honky Tonk Train Blues." He continued to play off and on through the early '60s. Whether performing solo or in tandem with fellow pianists Ammons and Pete Johnson, his bionic left-hand rhythms were always a standout. He also played celeste and even harpsichord on a few occasions.

Order up a draft beer, roll up your sleeves, light that stogie, and sit back while Sammy Price gets to work on the piano. An important part of blues and early jazz piano, Price also helped put plenty of rhythm into what would develop into Jump Blues and R&B.
Otis Spann's piano skills were so awesome that he won a big jazz following outside his world of the Chicago Blues. Spann got in on the ground floor with Muddy Waters' first electric band and brought a lyrical quality to the Boogie-Woogie style. Spann easily gets your behind moving, but his restrained, emotional playing is so tasty, you end up planted on your seat, taking in every line. His ivory tinkling was so good that it often overshadowed his worthy vocals. He died in 1970, but not before recording with Eric Clapton and Fleetwood Mac, thereby spreading his legacy to the rock world. Spann is still considered the blues pianist.

From 1953 to 1981, Johnnie Johnson worked almost exclusively as the backing pianist for rock 'n' roll lynchpin Chuck Berry, which may account for his own relative obscurity. His rolling licks and nonstop pump are intrinsic to the sound of pretty much all of Berry's great singles. The pair often played off each other, and the similarities between Berry's guitar licks and Johnson's piano runs are often startling, sparking an ongoing discussion about whether or not Berry was in the habit of swiping Johnson's vamps for his own use. It doesn't really matter because those songs are some of the greatest ever recorded, and questions about Berry's honesty are pointless. Johnson embarked on a solo career in the late 1980s, recording for a handful of independent blues labels before debuting on Elektra in 1992 with Johnnie B. Bad. These records are mostly good and feature his signature playing style and tangible love for rock 'n' roll's earlier, bluesier days. The one drawback is some A&R guy's decision to beef up sales with a host of lame guest vocalists and collaborations with has-beens that only serve to cloud Johnson's talent. But when he's left alone and allowed to play his backbeat-driven rock 'n' roll, Johnson emerges as the genuine article.

In 1953, prodigious pianist Mercy Dee Walton cut the weary and warbly R&B hit "One Room Country Shack" for Specialty Records. The legendary Mose Allison had a hit with that same song in 1957, helping to further the recognition of this Texan-cum-Californian. Although Walton's move to the West Coast was a typical transition for Texas blues players at the time, he managed to keep that hot and sweaty style tangible in his playing. His songs ranged from hyper, up-tempo blues drivers such as "Come Back Maybellene" to more sultry, base songs such as "Dark Muddy Bottom." Walton's near weeping vocals on these numbers were some of the most underrated and remarkable performances in Piano Blues.

Ron Levy is a master keyboard player specializing on the Hammond B-3 organ. Born in Boston, he showed an early affinity for music and began playing professionally while still in his teens. He joined blues great Albert King's band at the age of seventeen and followed that with a seven-year tenure backing B.B. King. He also spent four years in the keyboard chair for the legendary New England-based Roomful of Blues before finally setting out on his own with his band, Wild Kingdom. His records reflect his far-reaching knowledge and swinging, soulful technique on his Jimmy Smith-style grooves, New Orleans R&B, and low-down Electric Blues. Levy has also worked extensively as a record producer for New Orleans's Black Top records.

Keeper of the traditional jazz flame and part of the Chicago jazz scene of the '20s and '30s, this percussive pianist kept his style constant during the Swing and Bop eras. Oddly enough, his best recordings were made during the radical '40s. Later, during the age of Charlie Parker, Hodes proved that Traditional Jazz was still fresh and exciting.

Speckled Red's key recordings were made during the 1920s and '30s, and his piano and vocal stylings feature a tantalizing combination of blues, jazz and folk. His good time, chicken-shack music has aged as well as brandy, Casablanca, and Sophia Loren and retains its fun-loving, scrappy grace.

Barrelhouse piano playing that takes elements of Stride, Ragtime and blues, and hammers them together in a way that captures the urgency of all great blues music. Just experimental and personal enough to keep it fresh and funky sounding.
