Heaven and earth battle it out in the music of Ray Charles, who combined gospel with the best of secular music and helped give birth to soul, rock, and hard bop. His early work showed the silky influences of the Nat "King" Cole trio and the piano blues great Charles Brown. Charles combined their sophisticated styles with R&B and gritty gospel to create his signature sound: hard, snappy piano combined with exquisite vocals that fall somewhere between a preacher gone bad and a yearning romantic balladeer. Charles absorbed styles like a sponge: big band jazz, country and pop were all added to his musical arsenal, and he built up a musical empire that kept him in the public eye for decades up until his untimely death, at the age of 73, in June 2004. Just prior to his passing, Charles cut his first duets record with such fans as Norah Jones, Willie Nelson, and Elton John, which illustrates a multi-generational sampling of the artists who list him as a prime influence. An American institution, Ray Charles' rendition of "Georgia on My Mind" has even become that state's anthem. If only the other 49 states could be as fortunate.

In terms of style, Robben Ford doesn't like to be pinned down to any particular genre. His crisp guitar playing remains the one constant, lending a high level of quality to anything he does. His impressive résumé boasts collaborations with legends such as George Harrison, Joni Mitchell, and Miles Davis. He also formed the chart-topping group the Yellowjackets (which he subsequently left) and his current group, the Blue Line. Ford has mastered both jazz and blues but has proven to be more enduring with the latter genre, playing with a pristine touch and a soulful, expertly phrased guitar style.

Mose Allison is a fine, Bop-influenced pianist with a light, thin voice who happens to be a crackerjack songwriter and performer -- think of Loudon Wainwright III fronting the Nat Cole Trio. Allison comes on like a cocktail mixture of down home southerner and penthouse sophisticate: he's a mint juleped martini and he's managed to keep his career going for decades, despite not quite fitting into any one category. Allison's a (very) white bluesman, with humor too biting for the sensitive Singer-Songwriter set, and despite starting out playing with Stan Getz, he's considered too "commercial" by some small-minded jazz fans. Luckily, such rock era artists as Tom Waits, Pete Townshend, Bonnie Raitt, and especially Van Morrison (who has recorded a whole album of his tunes) have kept royalties in Allison's pocket and his name in the public eye. Allison's latest albums have confronted life and love in old age with equal doses of wit and sadness. Generations who once thought they "hope they die before they get old" will be scooping them up very soon.

Duke Robillard has been involved in almost every kind of blues-derived music since he first formed the seminal group Roomful of Blues in 1967. Pulling licks from a seemingly inexhaustible arsenal of blistering guitar riffs, Robillard has shown the same roots-reverent brilliance in everything from Rockabilly to slick city blues to his current fascination with swinging Jazz Blues. In the frequently over-glitzed and all too often generic world of whiteboy blues, this consummate guitar stylist stands out, garnering critical praise as well as a fervent legion of fans.

With a voice as tasty as grandma's cooking, Witherspoon hit the 1940s running and had a series of hit records. The Blues that burst out of him were tinged with a weary sense of loss: he roared but it was almost a quiet roar. By the mid-'50s, he was considered all washed up. He started recording with a series of jazz greats such as Ben Webster, Richard “Groove” Holmes, and Buck Clayton. It was a move that did more than just revive his career: his music was better than ever. Witherspoon's intense delivery is so powerful that he can lay out during long solos and his presence can still be felt. More soul is found in his music than in a cemetery. He left that soul with us when he finally lost his long battle with throat cancer in '97. He was singing until the end.

Laverne Baker was a sexy Jump Blues belter whose sizzling style helped pave the way for rock 'n' roll in the 1950s. She had a string of R&B and Pop hits, including "I Cried a Tear" and "See See Rider." Often juggling novelty tunes with uptown orchestral and Blues Jazz albums, Baker was out of the limelight for decades. She was rediscovered in the 1990s and basked in Broadway's light with the hit show Black and Blue. She recorded again with a newfound sophistication before passing away in 1997.

With his beginnings as a sessionman in the '50s, King Curtis perfected his hard-playing tenor sax skills. After playing with Buddy Holly and on tracks like the Coasters' "Yakety Yak," he began cutting his own pop/soul/jazz records, ultimately scoring a hit with the swinging "Soul Twist" in 1962. His prolific output and session work continued -- Curtis offered a notable performance on John Lennon's Imagine, for instance -- until he was murdered outside his New York apartment in 1971.

Frank Sinatra described singing with the Count Basie Orchestra as coasting on a crest of a wave -- the band had the power and you just rode with it. Judy Garland, the American banshee, described singing with the outfit as trying to be heard above the roar of a cannon. Jimmy Rushing, the lion-lunged fireplug, roared while riding the Basie wave from 1935 all the way to the shore of 1950. There are literally hundreds of albums, bootlegs and radio transcriptions from Rushing's period with the band and every track is a guaranteed blues-drenched, swinging blast. Don't stop there though, because even without Basie backing him up, Rushing recorded acres of top tunes. To many ears, Rushing's balls-to-the-wall style works best in small doses, but he went on to record good albums with every one from the Dave Brubeck Quartet to orchestras led by Oliver Nelson. His take on the perennial flag waver "There'll Be Some Changes Made" from the Brubeck album has recently been embraced by a new audience after it was used in a series of TV commercials.

Curtis Fuller plays the slide trombone with astonishing virtuosity, boasting a huge, rounded tone and a punchy, lightning-quick attack that recalls the legendary J. J. Johnson. Fuller's prodigious technique led many jazz greats, such as John Coltrane, to enlist him as a sideman (he appeared on Trane's classic 1957 album Blue Train). Between 1957 and 1960, Fuller recorded a series of albums as a leader, including the classic Blues-ette, featuring tenor saxophonist Benny Golson and pianist Tommy Flanagan. In 1959, Fuller co-founded the Jazztet with Golson and trumpeter Art Farmer, and toured with them for several years. Since making a comeback in the late ‘70s, Fuller has recorded a number of recent albums, most notably Blues-ette II, a reunion of the original group.

Joe Liggins was a popular R&B and Jump Blues musician who enjoyed substantial chart success in the late 1940s and early 1950s, with hits such as the inebriated waltz of "Pink Champagne" and the swooning melody of "The Honeydripper" (which provided the inspiration for the moniker of Robert Plant's side project in the 1980s). His music incorporates steady, streamlined performances even when he's approximating a musical drunken swagger. Liggins' soulful singing matched perfectly with the organic boogie of his piano playing. His brassy voice blended equally well with the horn sections of his songs, resulting in soaring song melodies and vocal sustains that would melt into brass solos.

Lonnie Johnson is probably one of the most important links between the birth of blues music as a regional idiomatic art form and American popular music from jazz to rock. As a guitarist, he was a hugely influential presence, shaping the playing of innovators from Charlie Christian to B.B. King, and by extension, Chuck Berry and countless rockers. He was a dazzling single string player, bringing the guitar from a primarily rhythm instrument to prominence as a lead instrument. He was a ubiquitous presence on jazz sessions in the 1920s playing on records with Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong. An excellent singer, his smooth uptown sound could be seen as an influence on R&B balladeers like Charles Brown and Nat Cole. Johnson was also able to adapt when the folk blues revival of the '60s came along playing expertly in that style.

New Orleans artist Walter "Wolfman" Washington is a Singer-Songwriter and instrumentalist who has been a professional musician for over 40 years. He began his career working with Lee Dorsey and Irma Thomas, and subsequently made a name for himself as Johnny Adams' band leader. Washington as a singer is capable of a smooth croon as well as a hard-edged R&B shout. He is an exceptionally fluid guitar player, effortlessly meshing, Bop, Funk, and blues into a singular style. He has recorded more than a half-dozen records as a leader, and is on numerous others as a sideman.

After retiring from touring, he went back to school and got an advanced degree in music. Playing primarily piano, but occasionally Hammond organ, Katz's compositions show a lot of depth. His playing swings hard, always displaying a gritty, blues-based edge.

She toured and recorded until she left the business in the 1930s, only to emerge from retirement in light of the blues revival of the '60s by cutting a number of sides before her death in 1970.
Ron Levy is a master keyboard player specializing on the Hammond B-3 organ. Born in Boston, he showed an early affinity for music and began playing professionally while still in his teens. He joined blues great Albert King's band at the age of seventeen and followed that with a seven-year tenure backing B.B. King. He also spent four years in the keyboard chair for the legendary New England-based Roomful of Blues before finally setting out on his own with his band, Wild Kingdom. His records reflect his far-reaching knowledge and swinging, soulful technique on his Jimmy Smith-style grooves, New Orleans R&B, and low-down Electric Blues. Levy has also worked extensively as a record producer for New Orleans's Black Top records.

Blues drenched Kansas City-style jazz from a couple of bright-eyed veterans. Singer and pianist Jeannie and her trombone-playing husband Jimmy throw plenty of grit into their sassy Swing music. If you are feeling good, throw one of their Concord Jazz CDs on and watch your good mood grow. The Cheathams' always hot lineups have included such soulful musicians as Hank Crawford and their fellow transplanted San Diegan, Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson. The perfect backdrop for barbecues, family reunions, and any activity that combines the sacred with the profane.

Johnny Heartsman was one of the last great West Coast bluesmen. He sang in the low-key California style, played a mean Hammond organ, and laid out electric guitar lines that heavily influenced others. Not content to rest on his laurels, Heartsman could also handle woodwinds. Heartsman's blues was chock full of greasy jazz and sophisticated soul. A frequent sideman and live performer, he only had the opportunity to record a handful of albums under his own name.

Otis Grand's swanky Electric Blues feature his smooth, jazz-like vocal stylings that translate well to his upscale nightclub blues songs. Best known for his out-of-print album He Knows the Blues, originally released in 1990, Grand enjoys covering songs by blues legends Joe Louis Walker, B.B. King, and Lou Baxter, among others. His playing finesse carries over to his band, an ensemble that have no problem utilizing the less-is-more philosophy that, when exercised, gives his sound the space to unfold into added, layered dynamics.
