The Arcade Fire formed around Win Butler and wife Regine Chassagne, soon growing to five official members and swelling on tour to nine. The combination of moodiness and joy in their semi-orchestral pop-rock coincided with a year in which several loved ones passed away (including Alvino Rey, veteran swing musician and grandfather of singer Butler and his brother, guitarist William) -- thus the title of <I>Funeral</I> and the music's reflection of ongoing life in the face of sadness. The group continued to tour and record throughout 2005, dazzling Europe and appearing at the Lollapalooza festival in Chicago.
