Inspired by the Cranberries and Fiona Apple, Nalick started dabbling in songwriting in the fifth grade. Throughout high school, she sang in several bands, including a Rush cover act. After graduating high school, the prolific songwriter enrolled in college and recorded several of her songs on a very low-fi tape recorder. A family friend passed the tape to former Blind Melon band members and current producers Brad Smith and Christopher Thorn, who were impressed by maturity of the songwriting and recorded Nalick.
