Omaha's 311 take their name from the city's police code for indecent exposure, but amateur numerologists will have a field day parsing their identifying digits in different ways. Subtracting 311 from 1990 returns a "Does not compute" error, for instance: the band was simply too crucial to the sound of that decade. After the provisional success of the funk-rock group's first two albums, 1995's 311 wedged itself forcefully into the alt-rock zeitgeist, going to No. 12 on the album charts. Mixing up rapping, grunge riffs, vinyl scratching and mosh-able choruses, it perfectly summed up the Lollapalooza generation's smorgasbord-like approach to musical styles. With 1997's Transistor, 311 had both beefed up the guitars and dialed up the dub effects, perfecting a contrast between RATM-style rap-rock and festival-friendly reggae jams that would define the following year's live album. While alternative tastes eventually moved on, 311 continued to ply their polymorphous funk and positive lyrics; they returned in 2009 with Uplifter, their ninth album.

Surfing high on the Ska Punk wave which raged in the 1990s, No Doubt found their ticket to ride in a watered-down, polished combination of 3rd Wave Ska and punk-pop. With success on the horizon, they quickly moved into more radio-friendly pop territory, launching a career that moved beyond alternative music festivals. As image-perfect as Disneyland, which sat in their backyard, No Doubt embraced a sound and look that countered the aggressive and raw aspects of grunge and punk. What little ska sound they had became buried under tightly crafted new wave currents. The group's appeal skyrocketed with the attention-grabbing centerpiece and vocalist, Gwen Stefani. In both sound and image, Stefani stood out like a forest fire in a snowstorm. Her lofty voice soared over easily digestible, bouncy guitars and took front stage both aurally and visually. Stefani went on to worldwide fame after the band went on hiatus in 2003.

People weren't joking when they called the Clash "the only band that matters." At the end of a decade when most rock music was being made by increasingly self-possessed millionaires, the Clash were a revelation. They played like the Who on speed (which is a pretty big deal, considering the Who were on speed to begin with) and howled about -- well, it was hard to make out just what Joe Strummer was singing on those first few records, but you could tell he was pissed. More importantly, the band's power and passion sounded like the solution to every social ill they addressed, as well as the cure for every personal disappointment you'd ever suffered. As spontaneous as they seemed, the band's three-chord anthems were marvels of songcraft; lead guitarist Mick Jones' pop smarts gave Strummer's righteous anger plenty of hooks to hang on, while Strummer's rage lent heft to even their catchiest songs. As their career progressed, Strummer and Jones explored the Roots and Reggae hinted at in the band's first recordings with increasing confidence, until hubris eventually did them in. But if the Clash hadn't been so arrogant to begin with, they never could have convinced a generation that rock bands were capable of starting revolutions instead of just singing about them.

Following in the footsteps of Lee Scratch Perry, the Wailers, G. Love and the Long Beach Dub Allstars, Slightly Stoopid blend acoustic rock with hip-hop, dub, punk, ska and reggae, attracting an army of die-hard fans, "Ese Locos." Core members Miles Doughty and Kyle McDonald were high school classmates when they signed to Sublime frontman Brad Nowell's label, Skunk Records. Like their Skunk cronies, the band helped define the aggressive sounds of the '90s SoCal skate-punk scene, beginning with their 1996 self-titled debut. Drummer Rob Moran and percussionist/vocalist Oguer Ocon joined the group for third studio album Everything You Need , which showcased their newly vamped live-dub sound. With 2005's Closer to the Sun , the band finally found a home on the Billboard charts. Famous for their crowd rousing jam sessions, Slightly Stoopid continue to tour with a variety of artists, including G. Love & Special Sauce, N.E.R.D, the Roots, Toots and the Maytals and more, playing nearly 200 gigs a year. 2007 kicked off their Summer Haze tour with G.Love and Ozomatli.

The first in a growing number of bands to eschew the traditionally accepted route to success via radio airplay and just go for the gusto with TV endorsements, Smash Mouth represent the new breed of media-savvy rock groups. By boiling down the elements of whatever styles seem to be the taste of the week and throwing a -pop ska beat behind it, they've ensured themselves a perpetual spot in the market. With the unforgettably infectious 1997 one-shot "Walkin' on the Sun," a deliciously snide synthesis of garage abrasiveness and lounge-y groove, Smash Mouth got everybody singing in a British accent and playing air-keyboards for a while.
While their teenage movie soundtrack-friendly version of Brian Adams' "Summer Of '69" may make Bowling for Soup an easy target for novelty dismissing, further listening will lead you to understand that this band plays contagiously hyper punk-pop with a heavy leaning on third-wave ska influences. Their uncanny talent for writing infectious power pop with soaring harmonies and diamond-edged melodies was honed three years after the band formed, the fruits of seemingly endless touring schedules. The bright parts of Bowling For Soup's songs shine when the band exercise their vacuum-tight playing and flawlessly interlocked vocal harmonies.

Formed in Birmingham in 1978, this much loved multi-racial sextet (Dave Wakeling, guitar/vocals; Rankin' Roger, vocals; Andy Cox, guitar; Dave Steel, bass; Everett Moreton, drums; Saxa, saxophone) took the Specials' blueprint and added high-spirited pop appeal, all spiced up with a ska authenticity provided by legendary bluebeat saxophonist Saxa. Having released a sparkling cover of the Smokey Robinson classic "Tears Of A Clown" as a debut single on 2-Tone, they quickly inked a long-term deal with Arista affording them their own spin-off label, Go Feet. Soon, a string of irresistible chart hits from "Hands Off… She's Mine" to "Mirror In the Bathroom" had made them Top Of The Pops regulars, all included on faultless debut album I Just Can't Stop It, which showed off both their witty way with a put down ("Best Friend") and a lyrical loathing of Thatcherism ("Stand Down Margaret"). Taking a less commercial and more reggae-influenced approach on 1981's follow up album, Wha'ppen, the band rallied for the following year's Special Beat Service, which as well as boasting MTV hits "Save It for Later" and "I Confess" included Dave Wakeling's soporific swansong "End Of The Party," a clear influence on Blur. Frustrated by the lack of a U.S. breakthrough, Wakeling and co-singer Rankin' Roger left the band the same year to form General Public, while rubber-legged pair Cox and Steel formed the Fine Young Cannibals with Roland Gift. None of which can dim memories of the defiantly droll Dave Wakeling singing "Too Nice To Talk To" on Top Of The Pops dressed as a Soviet soldier as the invasion of Afghanistan raged.

With a voice like a bulldog with throat cancer, Dicky Barrett and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones keep the roof raised with their tight blend of Boston-based Punk and Ska a la the Specials. Formed in 1985 and making their first recorded debut in 1989, the Bosstones (as they are informally called) were on the Third Wave Ska scene way early. They helped to shape the now wildly popular genre, Ska-Punk. Though they tone down once in a while to take on a more traditional, more subdued Ska style, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones mostly live up to (and beyond) their name and crunch through some serious Hardcore. Even when they're pushing up the pulse of their sound, the Bosstones never sacrifice the horn-rich Ska aspect of the band.
Madness have always been about fun -- for themselves and for their audience -- earning the title "The Nutty Boys" early in their career. Their upbeat, humorous sound helped revitalize Ska in the late 1970s and early '80s. A certifiable classic, the album One Step Beyond draws on the early ska and rock steady of Jamaica's Prince Buster and adding a distinct British stamp. Though they were always loved in the U.K., it took the hit "Our House" to win a significant American audience. That single exemplified the way Madness departed from traditional Ska, adding bits of soul and Brit Pop to their sound. Madness reunite here and there in different forms for an eager fan base that remains supportive.

Another band composed of Ska and Punk fans who couldn't bear to settle on just one genre. Goldfinger spin out slick, 100% horn-free music that's actually closer to Green Day than the Skatalites -- or even the Specials for that matter. Their catchy hooks and high-energy playing have helped them win the hearts of legions of contemporary Ska Punk and corporate rock fans everywhere.

Just as Punk was catching its second wind in Britain, and Ska was becoming a quickly fading memory, the Specials arose -- not quite like a phoenix from the ashes but as rude boys from yesteryear -- to blend the sounds of England's present and Jamaica's past. What they did, essentially, was give Ska a swift kick in the pants, hurrying its mellow rhythms just so, while leaving its horns and humor intact. While resurrecting Ska was hardly revolutionary, the band's multi-racial scope was, resulting in the aptly named 2-Tone record label. As the craze took off throughout Britain (and their cult status was founded in America), the band and label took on a number of similar acts - among them Madness and Bad Manners - who dominated the charts and held the attention of England's youth for a few years thereafter. The fad had run its course by the early '80s (even the Specials had splintered into other bands), but without the Specials' eponymous debut, neither Gwen Stefani (No Doubt) nor Mark McGrath (Sugar Ray) would have a genre to corrupt.

Emerging in the early 1990s from Mexico City, Cafe Tacvba have achieved massive popularity with their platinum discs and MTV video awards, and have come to represent the vanguard of Latin Rock and pop. While mostly adhering to the standard rock instrumental format of drums, guitar and bass, they mix rock rhythms with Latin styles such as Mariachi, trova, Merengue, Cumbia, and Tango. Lead singer Anonimo (Anonymous) raises his raspy voice to express angst and wounded whisperings to voice discontent, while Cafe Tacuba's guitars are notable for their Industrial-esque leanings. They've recorded mutated cover versions of popular Latin tunes, as well as having worked with the Kronos Quartet and the stomping feet of Mexico's Ballet Folklorico. They're consistently unconventional in everything from their compositions to their album artwork and packaging, and they appear poised to cross over to an American audience while still singing in Spanish.

Spin magazine called them the "future of rock 'n' roll." Perhaps, but if nothing else, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs are the point of departure for all contemporary Latin bands that fuse rock with Latin rhythms. They began by playing Ska in the 1980s, and have matured to freely mix Punk, jazz, Funk, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, Metal and Tango with accordion, sax, trumpet, trombone and the usual rock instrumentation. Their songs are generally up-tempo and characterized by frequent breaks or changes, sophisticated production, and complex arrangements; the Argentinian band's lyrics, effortlessly sung with passion, can be irreverent and dark, or humorous and even tender. "Matador" was a huge international hit for them and ultimately led to collaborations with Fishbone, Deborah Harry, Mick Jones, and Celia Cruz. They've toured extensively to enthusiastic audiences all over Latin America and the U.S., and their music appeared in the popular John Cusack film Grosse Pointe Blank. The awards they have been bestowed are too numerous to mention, and the eyes and ears of the Latin Rock world are upon them.

One of the original bands to effortlessly cross genres, Fishbone trailblazed a blend of Funk, Punk, Ska and Metal that was neither forced nor unnatural. A crazy horn and guitar filled amalgamation backed up by a virtuoso rhythm section makes up the backbone of their live show, while frontman Angelo Moore leaves behind most traces of sanity when he goes onstage. Though it has never been reflected by their record sales, Fishbone have garnered enough respect over the years to establish a cult following, and many newer bands such as No Doubt and Sublime owe a good deal of their success to the pioneering efforts of Fishbone.

Since they starting performing in the Pacific Northwest during Nirvana's early '90s heyday, the Cherry Poppin' Daddies can't be accused of jumping on the Retro-Swing bandwagon. Like most of their peers, the Daddies mix Jump Blues, Rockabilly, and a dash of Ska with a big beat sound that complements the modern dance floor. Like the Stray Cats in the '80s, CPD create a new sound based on vintage ideas. Their compilation album Zoot Suit Riot stormed up the charts in 1998.

As with the Beatles, there'll never be another Clash. But in the early '90s, no one more closely approximated the Clash's sheer energy and restlessness than Rancid. Their renovated and refurbished sound was palatable to old-school punks, new-school punks, and MTV followers alike. Lead singer Tim "Lint" Armstrong and bassist Matt Freeman had already debuted in a number of other notable Punk and Ska outfits, including M.D.C., Dance Hall Crashers, and their highly successful creation, Operation Ivy. By the time the pair formed Rancid, they had ironed out the freshman rough edges to emerge with raucous, feel-good Punk with catchy melodies galore and enough ruffian chanting to start a bar fight. And even if almost every lyric sung by Armstrong falls just outside of coherent, their music's fiery vibrancy is enough to keep the spirit of 1977 alive.

From Staines, an unfashionable London commuter town under the flight path of
Heathrow Airport (it's the home of fictional gangsta Ali G) come tales of
working class frustrations and ambition played to a Britpop soundtrack. With
harmonicas honking like car horns and lyrics about ATMs, Hard-Fi's music never strays far from the streets. July 2005's debut album Stars of CCTV enjoyed both immediate commercial success and a nomination for 2005's Mercury Music Prize (an award designed to showcase the year's 12 best albums from UK and Irish artists) leading to inevitable comparisons between bandleader Richard Archer and the Streets' Mike Skinner, but also Pulp's Jarvis Cocker and --perhaps most accurately -- the Specials' Terry Hall. Whether or not the band go on to fulfill their early promise, this was the sound of the suburbs in England during the summer of 2005.

In the eight years since forming in 1999, these incorrigible genre-hoppers from Melbourne, Australia, have doubled in size and expanded their Empire. The Cat Empire started as a trio when keyboardist Oliver McGill, double bassist Ryan Monro, and percussionist Felix Riebl (who specializes in timbales) started playing their jazz-meets-ska-meets-Latin fusion at gigs in jazz clubs and all-night parties at the tender age of nineteen. Gradually, they added trumpeter Harry James Angus, drummer Will Hull-Brown, and DJ Jamshid "Jumps" Khadiwala to the mix of musicians and hip-hop to the musical recipe. Bigger group plus bigger sound turned out to equal bigger bookings for the band, which started playing sold-out shows in Australia, touring around the world, and recording their first album. Record labels came a-knockin', and after weighing their options, the band signed with Virgin, which released their 2003 self-titled debut. Two Shoes and Cities followed in 2005 and 2006, respectively.

Perhaps best known as the driving force behind '90s punk mainstays Rancid, Tim Armstrong also played bass in Operation Ivy, the other seminal post-golden years punk rock band, and is the proprietor of Hellcat Records, which put out Joe Strummer's last few albums. In 1999, Armstrong launched a punkified hip-hop group, called the Transplants, and to date has released a trio of records with them. In the meantime, Armstrong has made appearances alongside all kinds of acts, from Gwen Stefani and Pink to such more seemingly suitable projects as Bad Religion and NOFX. In 2007, Armstrong released his first proper solo album, a good time reggae-punk record, called A Poet's Life.

Noting that the 2-Tone movement had little impact on American music, the Toasters formed in 1982 to bring Ska -- which by that time had become a wildly popular music form in Britain -- to audiences on the other side of the Atlantic. Their sound is culled from Jamaican Ska of the '60s and its British offspring of the '80s, incorporating the same restless beats and robust horns as its predecessors. Founder Rob Hingley also created Moon Ska Records, which has become a highly successful label in the wake of the '90s Ska explosion.

Sick of It All and Shelter helped form the New York Hardcore sound from two different angles. From their experiences in those seminal hardcore bands, Sick of It All roadie Toby Morse and Shelter's Adam Blake shape a new, more melodic, but still blistering NY/HC style. With thick roots deep in the New York Hardcore scene, H2O are no slouches in their punk attack. A powerful, popping bassline picks up the pace on their already accelerated and incredibly catchy, sing-along Hardcore. Their songs recall the positive themes of the Straight-Edge scene in the '80s, but sidestep the preachy, holier-than-thou posturing. In addition to ideological similarities, H2O also borrow sonically from bands like the Gorilla Biscuits, who had undeniably infectious melodies.

Gravelly vocals try to harmonize but don't quite hit the mark, giving this N.Y.C. band a sound as rough as Operation Ivy's catchy, ragged Ska Punk. When Choking Victim abandon their Ska influences, a barrage of fast, noisy guitars hone in on manic, ripped and torn Punk-Pop.

Entering with ultra-heavy guitars, the Hippos' crunching Hardcore gives way to upbeat, catchy, horn-driven Ska. Guitars still sneak into songs and sometimes dominate, but overall their hearts ride the 3rd Wave of Ska.

Originally, Ska stars like Desmond Dekker and Laurel Aitken combined the Motown sound with Jamaican bluebeat rhythms and horns, more horns, and additional horns. Perhaps as an homage to these pioneers, the Pietasters have followed suit, mixing '60s R&B and Punk into their distinctive Ska sound that not only possesses the peppy, knee-jerk, circus-inspired rhythms of most 3rd Wave Ska, but which also leans towards the roots of the genre. The Pietasters allow one to either kick up their heels, or relax and sway to the more mellow tunes they have to offer -- after all, skankin' too quickly is tiring, not to mention the fact that you end up looking like an idiot running in place after awhile.

Hands down, Pauline Black possessed the best voice that ever graced a 2-Tone release. Blessed with a bewitching soprano and dramatic panache, Black's voice reached plateaus that made every other musical detail sound like part of a backdrop painted just to set the stage for her entrance. While the Specials were content to merely jazz up old Ska standards, and Madness pleased themselves by playing up the zany angle, the Selecter shuttled through their songs like a band of Ska revisionists, with Black rewriting songs with her voice and leaving her signature in every piercing note. Even if the Specials outsold them and Madness outlasted them, Selecter were arguably the best that 2-Tone had to offer.
