One of the only skinhead acts to make it big in the states, the Boston-based Dropkick Murphys revitalized an increasingly jaded Punk scene by re-introducing the aggression of "Oi!" Recognizable by its football scrimmage grunting and Ubermensch machismo, "Oi!" holds a strong appeal for young, working class ruffians who like to shrug off the day's labors with a little male bonding and a lot of beer. Melding down-tuned metal heaviness and zippy Ska melodies, the Dropkick Murphys utilize tough, street punk sensibilities to counter Punk's watering-down via the influx of tepid radio pop.

The Bruisers have become, in a relatively short amount of time, one of America's foremost Punk bands. Their music ranges from the straight ahead Oi! that recalls the old days to the updated guitar bashing that anchors them in today's Hardcore scene. The music is big and brawny, and flexes its muscles without fear of retribution.

The heart of Oi!/Streepunk was in London's East End, where being Working Class and ostracized weren't trendy Punk aspirations, but an everyday reality. Cock Sparrer emerged from the East End's burnt-out streets, with a message of working class pride and unity for Punk youth. Combining Punk, '70s Rock 'n' Roll and the steady, sing-a-long pace of group soccer chants, Cock Sparrer came to embody the sound of Oi! in its earliest incarnation. To this day, their debut LP, "Shook Troops" remains one of Oi's most revered albums, and virtually defines the sound of Streetpunk. In terms of standouts, few Oi! enthusiasts will argue that Cock Sparrer represent the very best the genre has to offer, and are (in)arguably the best Oi! band of all time.

While the Sex Pistols agonised over punk's cultural impact and the Clash sought authenticity in dusty rockabilly B-sides, Sham 69 (Jimmy Pursey, vocals; Dave Parsons, guitar; Dave 'Kermit' Treganna , bass; Mark Cain, drums) crossed the gonzo appeal of Slade, the production wallop of the Pistols and the vocal harmonies of the Stretford End with devastating effect. Quoteaholic singer Jimmy Pursey soon had an army of teenage fans hanging on his every word thanks to riot-rock classics "If The Kids Are United" and "Hurry Up Harry," which saw Pursey leering through the lens of Top Of The Pops seemingly at will, until the band's unwanted right-wing following caused them to split following disrupted gigs and patchy final album The Adventures Of Hersham Boys (home to their biggest hit, "Hersham Boys," No. 6 in August 1979). An ill-fated spell as leader of the Sham Pistols with Rotten-less guns for hire Steve Jones and Paul Cook failed to work out, although Pursey continues on the punk circuit to this day, supported by an ageing 'Sham Army' still eager to reminisce about those nights down the pub with Harry.

From the moment of Oi!'s inception in its native England, it seemed so quintessentially British in nature that the very idea of it crossing the Atlantic and landing on American shores seemed a near impossibility. Nevertheless, Atlanta, Ga.'s Anti-Heros -- who were among the very first stateside bands to lead the Oi! brigade into battle -- offered boot-stomping, fist-flailing Oi! that bore a resemblance to their British antecedents' work, but also carried a heavy load of Hardcore tonnage along on its hell-for-leather ride. The chants and rants from soccer matches could still be heard in the choruses -- and lager was considered just as dear (and occasionally, worth fighting over) -- but the guitar blasts gained speed and the music moved more recklessly than the Oi! bred abroad. The spawn may have differed heavily from the music that sired it, but it struck a chord with skins and punks all over, making their first aggro-filled, beer-soaked, muscle-flexing album That's Right/Don't Tread On Me an inimitable Oi! classic.

Adopting the look of the droogs in A Clockwork Orange, the Adicts' poppy Punk is much more benign than Anthony Burgess' group of English deviants. Like many U.K. Punk bands, the Adicts formed in 1976 while they were still in their early teens; unlike most of their peers, however, they didn't really make a name for themselves until the early 1980s, by which time most of their contemporaries had risen and fallen with equal velocity. The Adicts still possess a knack for writing charging melodies with infectious, sing-along lyrics. Their songs have both a sharp-toothed bite and an innocent pop quality to them -- something which helped them climb into the U.K. charts with their second album. They're still at it, playing catchy, punchy Punk songs. They haven't changed their formula too much, but they're not close to getting dull, either.

There are more stories purporting to reveal the source of the Oi! genre's name than there are Oi! bands, and the most famous holds that Sounds writer Gary Bushell dubbed this not entirely new, jack-the-lad version of Punk after the now classic Cockney Rejects song "Oi! Oi! Oi!" Whether the story is true or not will probably never be known, but it does point to the profound impact a bunch of East London kids had on Punk. Focusing quite often on terrace hooliganism and punked-up versions of football anthems -- leave the politics to Sham and their Army -- the Rejects didn't just sing about dead end yobs, they were dead end yobs. Unfortunately, all the West Ham flag flying eventually led to crowds of Arsenal and Man United supporters arriving regularly to CR shows just to start trouble. Tired and weary, CR eventually headed off in a Metal direction, leaving the throngs of thugs to trudge off and wreak havoc in other places. A disappointing end to things, but what's more important is that at their peak, the Rejects were the cream of the Oi! crop -- and every Oi! band since owes them a heavy debt.

Of all the most politically vocal acts in the Oi! cauldron, Angelic Upstarts led the loudest charge of the left wing brigade with songs that uncomprimisingly challenged right wing ideology and all its adherents. The band championed the working class and the power of youth while simultaneously showing vibrant scorn and disdain for Margaret Thatcher's conservative policies, Britain's fascist National Front, police brutality and the Neo-Nazi element that had infiltrated the skinhead movement during the rebirth of Punk in the late '70s. Like the similarly minded Sham 69, the band soon found themselves playing shows that only served to give those they opposed a forum for violence and aggression; much unlike Sham, they continued on despite rarely playing a full show. In the end, it was waning public interest that sent the Upstarts their separate ways, although they continued to reform at intervals and to support liberal issues in their native England.

Anyone who cares will tell you a good Oi! song is all about sharp guitar blasts that send hot-tipped pins and needles flying; call-to-arms vocals that have enough grit and grime in their throat to match the music; and a battalion of chants shouted in measured, metronomic precision. Blitz were one of the few bands to hit every nail squarely on the head, and with a few notable exceptions, every song they ever stomped through bore their distinct footprints and showed the stuff of which real Oi! was made. They threw in the towel before taking the Metal road so many other Oi! acts hitchhiked their way down. Despite persistent rumors of a tour (really, folks. Let it go), there'll be no more battle cries from one of Oi!'s best, but the slew of hits they left behind should be enough to fill the plate of even the hungriest Oi! seeker.

Few could have expected this band to return to the studio in 1997, but the album that resulted from it, Waiting for Zero, was a blast from the past showing One Way System in full possession of their powers. They first came along in the early 1980s at a time when the press had already turned their back on Punk, pronouncing it dead. They were wrong, of course: Punk's rejection and suppression proved to be a much-needed shot in the arm to second-generation upstarts like One Way System. Hitting their stride with the 1983 single "Give Us a Future," few Punk bands have ever sounded so vital. Loftier production values had begun to creep into the Punk recording ethic, and this lent the band a sonorous density that somehow didn't compromise its aggression. On their two classic albums of the '80s, All Systems Go and Writing On The Wall, One Way System sound like the Punk version of Boston. No note stands alone and naked; they're all drawn together into heroic unisons which simply demand that listeners shout and move along. Only problem is, they play so well that most punkers are content to simply flip the record and let the band's political causes rot.

The River City Rebels formed in the sleepy suburban town of Hartford, Vermont, while its members were still in high school. So, what exactly do kids from a wealthy suburb know about rebellion? Well, from the sound of their debut, Racism, Religion and War, not much. Released on Victory Records in 2000, the CD was generally panned by reviewers claiming the band's brand of ska-influenced punk rock didn't have enough fire to sound authentic. By 2001, the band found a new singer and toned down the ska elements in their sound, and that made all the difference. With a catchier set of Rancid-esque punk-pop tunes, River City Rebels' sophomore effort, Playin' To Live, Livin' To Play, fared better with the press and they began getting better and better gigs on the touring circuit. In 2002, the band released No Good No Time No Pride and once again, stepped up the pace. The dozen songs herein were short bursts of anger and adrenaline wrapped in a two-minute music bed. So just when you think you have the RCR all figured out, they go and release Hate To Be Loved in 2004. Produced by New York Doll Syl Sylvain, the band's fourth album saw a sharp turn in the band's direction -- one that, perhaps not surprisingly, strayed into early New York punk/glam territory.

Every now and again, a Punk band manages to cross the nearly invisible line that separates the louder, more chaotic genre from its Oi! offspring to settle down among the short list of mohawked heroes of Street Punk. Slaughter and the Dogs are one of those bands who managed to pen both Oi! and Punk classics -- blistering guitar assaults that still conjure up fond memories among the '77 set. Contributions such as "Cranked Up Really High" and a revved-up cover of the New York Dolls' "Mystery Girls" were enough to solidify their bristles 'n' spikes status, although it was probably "Where Have All The Bootboys Gone," a blaring, fist-in-the-air sing-along, that made them darlings among those who championed Oi! As is nearly always the case with early Punk icons, the band fell apart after a few short years (and nearly took on Morrissey as their lead singer before coming to their senses), leaving behind a few classic songs that still stick in your head after just one listen.

Peter & the Test Tube Babies are Oi!'s long-standing jokesters: cider-drinking louts who recorded ferociously sung, fast and loud Streetpunk with silly lyrics about Elvis, transvestites, and being thrown out of bars. In an era glutted by Oi!'s political sloganeering and working class idealism, P&TTB made music unlike their contemporaries. The songs were harder and grittier than those of the more Punk oriented Cock Sparrer, without all the Viking-rock tendencies of the more politically-motivated Combat 84. Simply put, they made straight-ahead Oi!, with all it's welcoming chants and pub culture humor. They've managed to become Oi! legends with classic songs like "Banned from the Pubs" and "Moped Lads," all the while retaining their signature, in-your-face sound.
