Vocalist Howard Jones, guitarists Adam Dutkiewicz and Joel Stroetzel, bassist Mike D'Antonio and drummer Justin Foley are no strangers to the history of the modern metalcore scene they represent. Hailing from a strong lineage of seminal Massachusetts metalcore outfits, with former members from pillar bands Overcast and Aftershock, their family tree doesn't stop there. KSE guitarist and producer extraordinaire Adam D. not only produces every Killswitch album, but has also pulled production duty for Mass natives Unearth, All That Remains and Shadows Fall, among many other popular metalcore acts from across the country. Translation: Not only have Killswitch helped set the stylistic pace of what denotes modern metalcore, but they also have a hand in the sound new metalcore acts churn out. Sonically, Killswitch Engage possess the same preciseness and agility in and out of labyrinthine passages as Swedish melodic death metal masters At the Gates. Flame-scorched screams define verses and trade off into clean, operatic choruses and bridges while rending guitars and hardcore breakdowns fully define their amalgamated approach.

Hailing from Bridgend, England, Bullet for My Valentine's first incarnation was quite a bit different than the thematically immense, metal-clad rock of 2005's debut, The Poison. Back in 1998, the quartet of lads from Bridgend College was churning out Metallica covers under the name Jeff Killed John. It wasn't until 2003 that the band changed its name and beefed up their sound with a solidified lineup of guitarist and singer Matthew Tuck, guitarist Michael Paget, bassist Nick Crandle and drummer Michael Thomas. After issuing an EP and their debut on the British label Trustkill, they picked up Kerrang! magazine's Best British Newcomer Award in 2005 and eventually signed a deal with Sony/BMG. The band enjoyed quick success with American audiences and a number of high-profile tour slots, including one supporting Rob Zombie, from which they were booted when Tuck called Zombie and his cohorts "money-grabbing f*cks" on the band's message board.

Las Vegas-based post-hardcore quintet Escape the Fate formed in 2005 and immediately gained a large local following thanks to radio airplay and by winning a contest judged by members of My Chemical Romance, who took the fledgling band on tour with them. After signing to Epitaph, releasing an EP (No Sympathy For the Dead) and a debut LP (Dying is Your Latest Fashion) in 2006 and agreeing to a tour with Bullet For My Valentine, singer Ronnie Radke was charged as an accomplice in a murder trial, an event that sunk the tour opportunity and effectively ended Radke's time in the band. In 2008, Escape the Fate released This War Is Ours with new frontman Craig Mabbitt.

choruses that aren't afraid to flirt with emo at its poppiest. Shadows Fall vocalist Phil Labonte and guitarist Oli Herbert -- an innovative shredder fond of unusual modes, like the Hungarian minor scale -- formed the band in 1998, and by 2002 they had signed to Metal Blade. After a few lineup changes, including the addition of guitarist Mike Martin, 2004's This Darkened Heart proved the band's breakout album, with production by Killswitch Engage's Adam Dutkiewicz putting just the right degree of polish on their fusion of Swedish black metal stylings and American emo yearning. In 2006 All That Remains followed up with The Fall of Ideals and hit the road with Ozzfest before strutting their stuff on 2007's incendiary All That Remains Live. For all the hardcore swagger on display onstage, 2008's Overcome encountered a backlash from fans none too enamored by the band's radio-ready choruses.

Formed in the burgeoning O.C. metalcore scene in 1998, Atreyu plays fast and furious hardcore with occasional stinging leads, gurgling vocals and extremely melodic choruses. Releasing the bulk of their content on local indie Victory Records, the band caught breaks in the early 2000s with slots on the Vans Warped Tour and getting a song featured on the soundtrack to the vampire-babe vehicle Underworld Evolution. With a dark, practically goth aesthetic, the band seemed poised for an eventual major label signing like other SoCal kids Avenged Sevenfold and Halifax and were snatched up by Hollywood Records in 2007. Atreyu took their moniker from the protagonist of the film "Neverending Story."

Not content to simply play run-of-the-mill post-hardcore emo pop, Chiodos pack their songs with jittery punk riffs, metallic crunch, piano runs and occasional electro-pop touches. A six-piece from Davidson, Mich., the band has been together since 2001, when the members were still in high school. Despite self-releasing their records and a 2005 move to indie label Equal Vision, Chiodos have made multiple chart appearances and toured with the likes of Matchbook Romance and Atreyu, in addition to playing in the Warped Tour and several other traveling festivals. Their music is exuberant and meticulously constructed, shot through with a spirited sense of humor (they once appeared at a festival under the fake name "Fluff My Boner").

Formed in Los Angeles in 2005 by vocalist Maria Brink and guitarist Chris Howorth, this accessible melodic metalcore quintet also featuring guitarist Blake Bunzel, bassist Jesse Landry and drummer Jeff Fabb made a name for itself with their DIY philosophy and a little help from MySpace. Booking their own shows and touring as often as possible, In This Moment touted their demo solely on their MySpace page, garnering thousands of page views and becoming so popular on the social networking site that they landed a manager in Ozzy Osbourne bassist Rob "Blasko" Nicholson and a label in Century Media within a year. 2007 saw the release of their widely-received debut Beautiful Tragedy, and the band embarked on many major tours to support it, including a worldwide stint with Ozzy, and a national stint with Megadeth, among others. Continuing to tour incessantly, these road warriors only took a break to record their follow-up, 2008's The Dream.

Initially the "punk metal" interlude during Hank Williams III's live shows, Assjack is now a full-on metal band in their own right, featuring Williams on guitar and vocals, frontman Gary Lindsey and a fluid lineup of backing musicians. After a series of bootlegs made the rounds and the band made a name for itself on Hank III's perennially lauded tours, Assjack Official Release surfaced in 2009. While there are occasional nods to hardcore and even cowpunk, the bulk of Assjack's music is a high-test combination of NOLA sludge and L.A. slick (think Superjoint Ritual with less doominess). Folks looking for "Thunderstorms & Neon Signs" may be in for a bit of a shock, but let's face it, this is Hank Jr.'s kid -- he's liable to do anything.

Formed in 2004, this Sheffield, Yorkshire, England quintet took its name from a line in Pirates of the Caribbean and its sound from American hardcore and metal. Combining the elements of straight-edge hardcore, primitive '90s metalcore, and death metal, BMTH fused their own brand of crushing music that got the attention of the music industry. After releasing their debut album only in the U.K. in 2006, the band -- Oliver Sykes (vocals), Lee Malia (guitar), Curtis Ward (guitar), Matt Kean (bass), and Matt Nicholls (drums) -- was voted Best Newcomers by Kerrang! Magazine, and the media frenzy ensued. They quietly re- released the album in the United States a year later, but it wasn't until Epitaph Records released 2008's highly anticipated second full-length Suicide Season following their stint on the 2008 Vans Warped Tour that BMTH became a force in the States.

Suicidal Tendencies emerged from Venice, Calif., in 1983, successfully melding thrash metal with the speedcore of punk. Embracing the "heavy" portion of metal without the tongue-in-cheek antics, the punk kids took notice of Suicidal Tendencies and no longer had to hide their metal collections from their friends. The band was cross-cultural and street smart, often incorporating aspects of gang culture with their skate punk roots. The group's self-titled first release was a frenetic one, super-charged by lead singer Mike Muir's political observations and offbeat humor. That album's single, "Institutionalized" -- with its fierce chorus and eminently quotable lyrics "All I wanted was a Pepsi / Just one Pepsi" -- had limited commercial success. Riding their wave of early success, Muir and a group of rotating band members continued a release schedule with results that we uneven at best. Join the Army (Caroline), was released in '87, a full four years after their debut, and equally embraced Motorhead and speedcore. Lights...Camera....Action, their first for Epic in '90, was a ferociously loud album with Muir once again conveying his political and social ideas, while '92s The Art of Rebellion was more mainstream and filled with standard rock cliches. Suicidal for Life found the band embracing some of its earlier ferocity in '94, not so much with the music as with the use of obscenities. Muir and band returned to the world of indies in '98, releasing Six the Hard Way on their own Suicidal Records.

Bury Your Dead began as a side project in 2001 for guitarist Slim B and drummer Mark Castillo, who were both playing in a band called Hamartia. After some time, the metalcore sound began to lose its enchantment for the two friends, and they began writing songs on their own. Eventually they recruited Rich Casey (bass) and singer Joe Krewko and Bury Your Dead were officially born. The quartet toured and gained a reputation for their bruising live shows, they were signed Eulogy Records and released, You Had Me At Hello in March 2002. The guys borrowed a van and eagerly went on tour to support the release. Once the tour was over, however, the members went their separate ways. But within a year, their paths led back to one another and the band reformed. This time around, they added (singer) Mat Bruso and (guitarist) Eric Ellis to complete their sound. Voracious touring followed, including appearances at the highly regarded Metalfest and Hellfest -- which is where they were approached by Victory Records. The band's debut, Cover Your Tracks was released in late 2004 on the label, and was heralded as one of the most brutal hardcore releases to date. While touring in support of Cover Your Tracks, they kicked around the idea of releasing a live album. So in May 2005, producer Paul Minor recorded the band's show at the Chain Reaction in Anaheim, California, and laid the groundwork for the aptly-titled, Alive. Released just in time for the Ozzfest 2005, Alive gave fans a peek into Bury Your Dead's ferocious, deafening live sound.

Drop Dead, Gorgeous play a somewhat complex blend of punk and metal often termed post-hardcore, marked by vocals that range from screaming to whispers to death-screech. The band formed in Denver, Colorado, in 2000, gaining the attention of Rise Records through songs posted on their MySpace page while the kids were still in high school. Rise put out a pair of records for them (Be Mine, Valentine and In Vogue) and sent them out on a series of tours. In 2006, they signed to Geffen. The highly involved concept album Worse Than A Fairy Tale came out in August 2007.

This Epitaph band combines Scandinavian metal guitars, hardcore breakdowns and abrasive vocals - the very definition of the American metalcore phenomenon, though they hail from Byron Bay, New South Wales, Australia. Formed in 2003, and named for a country road near their hometown, Parkway Drive -- Winston McCall, Ben Gordon, Jeff Ling, Luke Kilpatrick and Jia O'Connor -- are influenced by Unearth, Bleeding Through and Evergreen Terrace -- who are nearly contemporaries! Having tapped Killswitch Engage guitarist/metalcore producer extraordinaire Adam D. on both 2005's Killing With a Smile and 2007's Horizons, Parkway Drive are making a name for themselves right alongside their influences.

Most striking about this band is their vocal delivery, a whips-and-satin style that combines harsh growls and limpid, clean singing. There's a touch of In Flames and At the Gates in Shadows Fall's counterbalancing of down-tuned guitars and high-flying vocals, but their playing is more progressive, allowing each player to fan their talents across the table like a winning hand.

From the outset, the Dillinger Escape Plan's sonic terror has been precision violence. Franticly unloading extreme dissonance and exacting attacks of gleaming chrome noise against chaotic rhythms, they embody alarmist anxiety. While they've never been shy to change direction mid-song (tempos converging, frenzied thrashing dropping away to tense, Sabbath slow-builds) their new direction widens the chasm between musical moments. Guitar grinds stumble into Fusion noodling and rip into a blastbeat-driven frenzy. Mr. Bungle comparisons are definitely at hand, though Patton and co. possess neither the aggressive abandon of the Dillinger Escape Plan nor vocalist Dimitri Minakakis' rash, unyielding percussive screams.

Formed on Long Island in 2000, From Autumn to Ashes takes a kitchen-sink approach to the still-emerging post-hardcore scene. Dividing the vocals between a wraith-screech-prone growler and a smooth crooning drummer, the band piles on as many musical cues from Iron Maiden as from Negative Approach then crisscrosses tracer bullet guitars over the whole mess. Between 2000 and 2008, FATA shared stages with Taking Back Sunday and Shadows Fall, released 4 albums, 3 EPs and one final live record, then announced they'd be going on "indefinite hiatus." Singer Francis Mark and guitarist Rob Lauritsan formed Warship and singer/drummer Jeff Gretz returned to long-standing metalcore band Zao.

One of the most brutal and widely imitated bands around, Converge's absolutely crushing Metalcore obliterates everything in its path and never, ever lets up. Blood-curdling screams barely rise above lightning-fast, ear-killing guitars and ton-o-bricks drums. And unlike so many of their ilk, the band's lyrics stand out as particularly powerful. Their uncompromising aggression hits you in the midsection with such frequency and raging force as to prevent you from ever taking a breath.

This straight-edge six-piece formed in 1999 in Orange County, Calif., under the loosely defined metalcore guise. Rising up at the same time as Avenged Sevenfold and Atreyu, Bleeding Through set themselves apart by incorporating classic death metal, symphonic black metal and hardcore swagger along with mixing both screaming and singing in their extreme sound. After undergoing many lineup changes, this critically acclaimed band currently features Brandon Schieppati on vocals, Brian Leppke and Jona Weinhofen on guitars, Marta Peterson on keyboards, Ryan Wombacher on bass, and Derek Youngsma on drums. From their Trustkill debut, 2003's This Is Love, This Is Murder, Bleeding Through caught the attention of many major publications as a band to watch and soon became a worldwide force in modern metal. After a very public squabble with their label, 2008's darker, angrier Devin Townsend-produced Declaration showed a strong change in direction.

Refused demand, "We want the airwaves back. We don't just want airtime. We want all the time, all of the time." Mixing the intensity of Minor Threat and the complexity of Fugazi, Refused take no prisoners in any confrontation. Like no Hardcore before, these Swedes perfectly blend styles from across the board -- Techno, jazz, pop, Metal -- into their distinct, ripping Hardcore sound. The vocals go from raw screaming to a smooth crooning with eerie precision. The music pushes boundaries explored by few bands; this is the Hardcore sound of tomorrow. While their music is so absolutely powerful -- an aural blitzkrieg that pounds you senseless -- their politics are every bit as strong. They've been nominated for Swedish Grammies, they've won Zeppelins (the Swedish MTV music awards), but they recently fell apart as a band, holding true to their anarchist principles over becoming music superstars.

Young screamo band taking a Boy Sets Fire approach to their music. Vocals veer between a sandpaper grittiness and a high melodic sheen while the Hardcore guitars and epic song structures are pure, by-the-book Metalcore.

Oh my god! Cave-In are an unrestrained flood-of-anger-into-adrenaline cacophony -- but as the nerves twitch and the heart beats faster, they launch precision maneuvers shuttling from ringing tones to endless drum fills, to percussive screaming, to Thrash riffs, to Hardcore velocity abandon. As soon as they find a groove, they leap out in search of other acoustically violent tactics to assault and overwhelm.
