Sigur Ros may not realize they're the kings of post-Shoegazer (sorry, Mogwai), but perhaps that's a good thing. This Icelandic outfit creates interplanetary soundscapes that make Slowdive sound like Motorhead. Moaning guitars weep and howl over textured, ether-soaked guitar effects as an androgynous singer coos and croons wistful melodies of pure soul. Sigur Ros create the kind of transcendental music for those who appreciate aural escapism and white noise. Their songs somehow sound and feel like coming down softly upon endless Arctic sheets -- you clear off some snow from the surface to discover blue lights shining from beneath the ice. If ghosts get to listen to music, don't think for a second that they subscribe to the gloomy Goth ethic. It would make sense if Sigur Ros topped the music charts for afterlife listeners.

Many associate Portland-based the Dandy Warhols with the Brian Jonestown Massacre. Like BJM, the Dandys are one of the few Anglophile bands who wound up in the same British weeklies they read religiously while growing up. They melted onto the scene with Dandys Rule, OK? (1995), a spatial and atmospheric collection of songs that exposed an occasional pop gem, like the lyric-less "Dandy Warhols T.V. Theme Song" or the pole-grinding stripper anthem "Ride." Their second album Dandy Warhols Come Down (1997) found frontman Courtney Taylor experimenting with some of the Jonestown's hand-me-down tape loop hijinks. This release was laden with more commercial alternative compromises in the overall production, while successfully maintaining the band's signature Moog-gazing jams.

M83 began in the southern French town of Antibes around the turn of the millennium as a duo, Anthony Gonzalez and Nicolas Fromageau. Equally indebted to the 4AD/My Bloody Valentine school of blissed-out, psychedelicized noise and to the chilled atmospheric sides of Paris and Berlin's electronic scenes, M83's self-titled debut and its 2003 follow-up, Dead Cities, Red Seas and Lost Ghosts, captured the tragedy and ascension of the post-9/11 moment. Befitting a group named after a universe, it was not small music, it did not back down from feelings and it could rock a dance floor without mocking rockers or dancers. Fromageau exited ahead of '05's Before the Dawn Heals Us, yet as titles like "Teen Angst" and "Don't Save Us from the Flames" may imply, M83 retained the sound and fury of a sonic battleground, youthful vigor and knowing hopelessness exploding and receding. A limited-edition EP of ambient sculptures called Digital Shades [Vol. 1] saw Gonzalez achieve an ambient calm. And when he re-entered the breach, '08's Saturdays = Youth found him embracing an '80s song form, an almost-pop band forming from the big bang of an electronic freak-out.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club -- named after the gang in the Brando-centric film The Wild One -- meander along in a world seemingly ruled by simple rock 'n' roll riffs, snatches of psychedelia, words sung in a bored and lazy manner and, quite possibly, heavy downers. That said, their music is as addictive as the drugs they may or may not be on, with expert builds, solid musicianship and a consistent mood throughout.

UK group My Bloody Valentine's countless fans feel about Kevin Shields' guitar chords the way Christians feel about the gospel. Each of the eternally dense chords seems to contain a glimmer of truth. To follow their career from their early Jesus and Mary Chain/noise pop songs to their 1991 masterpiece Loveless is akin to a history lesson in how to transform a guitar chord into a crushing wave of sonic density. Like John Coltrane's later works, MBV tracks are simultaneously oppressive and uplifting -- their elegantly overwhelming orchestrations are so profound that you'll feel transformed by their might. Each track feels absolute, as if nothing could be more intense; listening to their music is to touch the sublime.

These post-adolescent Shoegazers might be as exciting to watch as a Low concert, but if you take them home and chill to this music you will be pleasantly surprised. What sets the American Analog Set apart from the new generation of footwear-studying enthusiasts is that they exude a refreshingly original take on Dream Pop and Noise Rock rather than regurgitating what came from Thames Valley, England, ten years ago (sorry, Mogwai). Tripled-up, one-string electric guitar arrangements and hushed vocals work well with wistful tones and melodies you could just cry to.

Whether they're blasting out of suburban ennui (their anthems) or the hungover prose of chemical escape (trip-hop with the right mix of slow, grinding bass and machined percussion), Kill Hannah's unwavering knack for pop hooks suckerpunch the ears and excite your inner adolescent.

Catherine Wheel's six records are noisy, blissful displays of excellent pop songcraft and tasteful yet explosive guitar textures. Though the band has been largely ignored since Ferment (1992), their ensuing albums have shown the band moving into more complexly rhythmic, jaggedly percussive territories and embracing guitar-driven pyrotechnics with more fervency than ever. From this era of whitewashed beauty comes the outfit's most simultaneously beautiful and abrasive work to date. Sadly, without the attention and unassailable status enjoyed by the genre's definitive acts (see: My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Swervedriver), Catherine Wheel continue to evolve in the shadows for a small but devout group of fans.

With a knack for languid, ambient pop songs, Beach House quickly received national attention after forming officially in Baltimore in 2005. But French-born vocalist and keyboard player Victoria Legrand and guitarist Alex Scully knew each other long before that; they had played and played music together as kids while growing up in Baltimore, Philadelphia and France. For a short time they were members of a Baltimore electro outfit called the Daggerhearts, but the duo soon began writing and recording on their own. They received a boost by having their song "Apple Orchard" included on a Pitchfork compilation, which catapulted their Nico-esqe sensibility into the hearts of music bloggers around the globe. Their eponymous debut was issued in October of 2006 on the Carpark label.

Beginning with the Smile EP, RIDE set overdriven guitars to the hypnotic pulse of Fender vibrato and driven, loopy rhythms. Vocalists Mark Gardner and Andy Bell traded vocal duties, layering each with their richly melodic, atmospheric harmonies and creating the shoegazer's signature contrast between jet engine guitars and almost deadpan vocals. The band's two minutes began in 1990 with the release of Nowhere, and rather than cow-towing to pop's quick, compressed conventions, RIDE increased the throttle with phantom feedback and an elegant sort of rhythmic aggression for album's opener "Seagull." Still, the band didn't confine itself to volume tactics alone; they also showed great pop skills and a penchant for heart wrenching song craft with the album's touted hit "Vapour Trail." RIDE continued to profile their structured pop brilliance (see "Twisterella") and jammy, neo-psychedelic swirl until their demise in 1995.

Shoegazers Swervedriver give the Noise Pop blueprint a clean, pure pop injection. The result is music with the same delicacy, but with underlying catchy melodies. Churning guitars circle high above spacey tinklings and distant white noise echoes, and somewhere beneath, a guitar strums. Unlike music that you merely hear, Swervedriver's lovely noise surrounds you and leaves you floating in trance-inducing soundscapes.

Wheat's music blankets the listener in womb-like comforting layers of moving sounds. Every song seems to be rooted in heartfelt laments and lovelorn longing. The band emit majestic soundscapes of samples, percussion, strings, keyboards, and otherworldly noises that are intricately arranged in a sonic escapist's fortitude. Wheat successfully blend subtle rootsy influences with sheer innovation in both studio production and song arrangement. Their songs unleash an honest and effortless poetry that drips from Scott Levesque's mouth like heaven-spun honey. Perfect music to put on a mix tape for someone who's been careless with your heart.

Slowdive's first few EPs in the early 1990s were the culmination of two disparate yet equally dreamy guitar bands. Their songs held the reverb-laden, swirling beauty of the Cocteau Twins, yet turned the guitars up so loud that it sounded like outtakes from the Jesus and Mary Chain's Psychocandy -- only slowed down to something barely faster than a heartbeat. Tracks such as "Morningrise" and "Catch the Breeze" showed that Neil Halstead and Rachael Gowell could write songs just as easily as they could harmonize. Capable of inducing shudders in their rippling, burnt-orange glow, these early tracks, alongside others like "Shine" and "Brighter," still stand as high-water marks for lovers of blissed-out guitar pop. They progressed through the Gothic-tinged sensibilities of their debut Just for a Day when they released Souvlaki in 1994. Combining elements of Dub and folk amongst their typically stunning harmonies, the record also contained a bona fide pop song in the finery that is "Alison." Perhaps feeling the need to branch out further, the band dabbled in Eno-esque minimalism with their final record Pygmalion. Although this record contained moments of clarity in tracks like "Rutti" and "Blue Skied N' Clear," it would be the final chapter as Rachel and Neil would go on to pursue more traditional avenues with the pastoral Mojave 3.

When it comes to Ambulance LTD, diversity is key: Not only do band members come from as far afield as Belfast, Northern Ireland; Santa Monica, California; Eugene, Oregon and "all over New England," but they also bring in influences as diverse as jazz great John Coltrane, Guns N' Roses, Fleetwood Mac, My Bloody Valentine and Black Sabbath to their swooning, atmospheric sound. Each member independently found his way to New York with the aim to try his luck in the music scene. After flirting briefly with the New York jazz community, the guys found each other in 2000 and started crafting their rather eccentric sound, melding their love for atmospheric guitars with a steady, jazz-like beat, resulting in a layered, ethereal sound with chops. Eventually, Ambulance LTD got a showcase at Brownies, but to say their performance was a disappointment would be somewhat of an understatement. But there was a silver lining: one of the few people in the audience happened to be an A&R person for TVT Records. Ambulance LTD were signed shortly thereafter and released their eponymous debut EP in 2003. The band's first full length album, Up, came out in 2004.

Lush sounded almost exactly like their name would have you believe, a de-luxe, plush pillow of sound that was wholly hypnotic and entrancing. In a blur of gossamer guitar chords that glistened like dew dotted webs, desperate bass lines that resonated with ominous urgency and Miki Berenyi's beautifully spectral vocals, Lush created dreamy, narcotic soundscapes that left the listener swimming in rich, murky pools of sound. Inspired by My Bloody Valentine, who remain the shoegazing darlings of the indie press, Lush gradually developed a more straight-forward guitar pop sound that reflected the rise of Brit-Pop, although they maintained their swirling, drifting foundations as a amorphous backdrop.

San Francisco-based quintet Film School earn their British passport with their utterly late 1980s indie rock sound. Formed in 2001, the group hovers around the talents of founder Krayg Burton (vocals/guitar) and Nyles Lannon (guitar/vocals), who has recorded electronic music as n.Ln and n.lannon. In 2003, Amazing Grease released a four-song EP Always Never but in 2005 the left the small label and signed with Beggars Banquet. Their self-titled debut combines shoegazer guitar swirls (Ride, Slowdive) with the melancholic vocals of the Cure and a touch of true rock drumming to give some muscle to their beautifully messy sound.

Much like Blood on the Wall and Sic Alps, the Vivian Girls pay homage to classic indie pop, namely the distorto-soaked twee of Scrawl, Velocity Girl, Black Tambourine, Talulah Gosh and Tiger Trap. Named after the protagonists of outsider artist Henry Darger's now legendary manuscript The Story of the Vivian Girls, in What is known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinnian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion, the group came together in Brooklyn in 2007. In a matter of months the trio of Cassie Ramone, Kickball Katy and Frankie Rose (who eventually left the band) recorded a five song demo and played a string of gigs, often with fellow New Yorkers Woods and Crystal Stilts. With Ali bashing away simple, Moe Tucker-like beats, Cassie and Katy chirp about boys, youth and insecurity, as if they're a late '60s bubblegum act dipped in a vat of shoegazing fuzz. In 2008, the Girls cranked up their recording schedule, releasing a slew of seven-inches (those little, round discs that contain two, sometimes three songs) and a self-titled album on the Mauled by Tigers imprint. Although the record's first pressing quickly sold out, the longtime garage rock label In the Red reissued it several months later.

The gossamer vocals of Paula Frazer grace Tarnation like some ashen Appalachian spirit that hovers over pastoral melodies. Her old-timey, yodel-inspired inflections and wispy, watery singing are accompanied by the down-tempo rhythms of a rustic backline, and much like those of 4AD's early artist roster, Tarnation's songs carry the artistic weight of the now-defunct English label. However, the band managed to inject its own signature style of Alt Country way before that tired label was ever invented. Like Hope Sandoval, Frazer is a visionary who seems to write songs for the escapist's delight. In other words, Tarnation's spooky country music is well-suited for packing that corn-cob pipe and kicking back with your feet up for the duration of its playing time.

Although this ethereal-sounding power trio recorded some dreamy guitar songs with wistful backdrops of sonic textures, Kitchens of Distinction never really fit in with England's Shoegazing scene. Although the scene itself was created more by media than musicians, Kitchens didn't adhere to the demure image and androgynous, whisper-sung stylings of bands such as Slowdive, Chapterhouse, or even My Bloody Valentine. Their Dream Pop was birthed from similar guitar washes of white noise, but singer/bass player Patrick Fitzgerald wasn't afraid to do his own thing and sing his songs with a little more soul than the norm.

Black Tambourine's brand of dark, 1960s-touched twee pop sprouted in 1990s Washington, D.C., when most bands there were obsessed with angst-ridden DIY post-punk. What's most remarkable about the band's two-year career is not that they were going against the grain, but that their sound came so far ahead of others who would dominate college radio with squalling feedback and pop roots a decade later. When it was all but unheard of, they combined '60s pop with elements of shoegazer, draping every track in fuzzed-out distortion and echoing feedback while retaining a dedication to classic pop forms that would make Phil Spector proud. Like the bashful indie vocalists that would follow a decade later, singer Pam Berry's winsome, reverb-wet melodies gets covered by the noisy flourishes, but the overall effect is dreamy, heralding the twilight architects of a sound that was years ahead of its time.

Proudly exhibiting their love for shoegazer, Blackstrap revive the sounds of their idols with a lustrous kaleidoscope of fuzz, drone, lust and underlying gloom. With multi-layered arrangements and a keen pop awareness, the quintet from Stockholm, Sweden, evokes the inventive sounds of bands like My Bloody Valentine, the Jesus and Mary Chain and Stereolab. Showcasing the placid harmonies of vocalists Jonatan Westh and Maria Linden over heavy doses of dreamy noise pop, Blackstrap debuted with the album Ghost Children in 2003. But it wasn't until 2008 with the release of Steal My Horses and Run that the band started garnering international attention.

Prospective Records artists Fauna turn Shoegazer on itself, creating a more abrasive and injured sound than say, Cocteau Twins. Not to say there's any lack of melody -- underneath these songs' blankets of distorted vibrato exist shimmering, finely-tuned melodies. The production is meticulous and creative -- songs present themselves as collections of extremist production ideas, choppy and Doppler-affecting one moment, bright and linear the next. Ultimately, Fauna maintain a rare and near-perfect balance of creativity and pop magnetism, an accomplishment that places real and hard-earned value on each and every song.

Young Galaxy's story isn't exactly the stuff of constellation myths, but it
is romantic in more than one sense of the word. First, the story of the
band, which consists of Catherine McCandless and her boyfriend, Stephen
Ramsay, is the story of a couple who met, fell in love and formed a band
together to jointly pursue their musical dreams. Second, the story takes
place in a couple of cities that are positively overrun with moony artistic
types. McCandless and Ramsay met in Vancouver, where years ago they began
working on material that would become Young Galaxy's. But before their own
project came to be, the couple moved to Montreal, where Ramsay took what
ended up being quite a long gig as a touring guitarist for another
cosmically named outfit, Stars. After he left amicably to focus on his work
with McCandless, Young Galaxy was snapped up by Arts & Crafts, a Canadian
label that's home to a stable of more dreamers, such as Broken Social Scene
and Feist. The band released an EP, formed a live band and took off on tour
with label-mates The Dears. In 2007, Arts & Crafts released Young Galaxy's
eponymous full-length debut.

Antarctica's Dream Pop explores the nightmares and unsettled cold of the realm of sleep. Whereas a lot of yesterday's shoegazers brought out the beauty in sad songs, Antarctica beautifully bring out the madness in sadness. Guitar sound-storms squeeze third notes out of two-note intermingling. Harmonics and harmonies lose themselves in a sea of digital delay and soaring melodies.

Take three alternative hip-hoppers from Berkeley and introduce them to the equally unconventional members of the German ambient pop quartet the Notwist. The result is a meeting between two collective styles that are worlds apart, but share the same attitude of innovation. Similar to the creation of the electronic pop project the Postal Service, initially the members of these two bands (after a mutual admiration meeting backstage in Germany) collaborated via airmail, sending packages of demo ideas across the ocean. This transatlantic art collage continued apace at international shipping rates, until eventually Themselves jumped on a plane and headed to Munich for an extended stay and recording session. This stretch of real-time was filled with bonding, beer drinking and sound creation, which resulted in the release of their self-titled debut disc in 2005. Despite cramming in experimental outbursts that push the boundaries of hip-hop, electronica, pop, alternative rap, indie shoegazer and jazz, what transpired was something tranquil and atmospheric.

Gods and Queens -- vocalist/ guitarist Jamie Getz, bassist Ben Roysdon and drummer Robin Fowler -- are an experimental three-piece from Brooklyn and Philadelphia. They claim to have "tried in vain to blatantly steal riffs and song patterns from some of their favorite bands" -- namely, Unwound and Lungfish, but they also draw comparisons to Quicksand and Fugazi. Though they claim to have failed at every attempt, there is no denying the static lo-fi/noise rock feel to their untitled 2008 debut. The seven untitled tracks explore an array of rhythms, textures and effects alongside (and somewhat over the top of) gravelly vocals that do indeed reflect their notable predecessors.
