Under the close tutelage of indie rock kingpin Calvin Johnson, Modest Mouse have cultivated a twangy, folk-tinged rock sound that is nothing less than inspiring. Blending grainy, high-pitched vocals catchy guitar hooks and an aversion to traditional rock song structures, this humble threesome churn out track after track of gut-wrenching emotive romps. Not afraid to soar from melodic acoustic ballads to screeching digressions that verge on jam rock, Modest Mouse strike a balance between musical energy and expressive candor, finding an angsty, melancholic purity that eludes other indie bands.

By the time Regina Spektor's major label debut, Begin to Hope, arrived in 2006, the Russian-born singer already had a lengthy pedigree as a musician. She took up piano under the direction of her musically inclined parents while a child in Moscow. Her family eventually moved to the Bronx, where she continued classical studies at the Manhattan School of Music and started writing her own music. Her musical pursuits carried through college, and she graduated from a music composition program at Purchase College in 2001. Frequenting venues in Manhattan, she became associated with the so-called "anti-folk" movement and self-released 2001's 11:11, 2002's Songs and 2004's Soviet Kitsch, which Sire later reissued. A compilation of early recordings, Mary Ann Meets the Gravediggers and Other Short Stories, was released in 2006. In 2009, Spektor gathered an all-star production team to help her with Far, the much anticipated follow-up to Begin to Hope.

Long before The O.C.'s resident hipster Seth Cohen proclaimed his love for the band, the Bellingham, Wash., natives were cranking out sweet, cozy melodies for reflective romantics. After the success of a cassette put together by Ben Gibbard in 1997, the vocalist and guitarist decided to transform his solo project into a full-fledged band. When guitarist Chris Walla, bassist Nick Harmer and drummer Nathan Good came aboard, Death Cab For Cutie were born. The band took its name from a Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band song that appeared in the Beatles movie Magical Mystery Tour. By 1998, Death Cab's debut, Something About Airplanes, was released, recalling the off-kilter guitar pop of Built to Spill and the quietly passionate storytelling of Elliott Smith. The band went on to create three more LPs before signing to Atlantic Records and releasing the Grammy-nominated Plans in 2005. Nearly three years later, Narrow Stairs revealed a slightly changed Death Cab, which cited heavy metal as an influence. Though more Band of Horses than Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, the brawnier approach worked; it was their first album to top the Billboard charts.

Lily Allen is the precocious daughter of actor/comedian Keith Allen and film producer mom, Alison Owen. Despite a privileged background, Allen was somewhat of a handful growing up, often running away and getting expelled from various schools. By 15, Allen knew school wasn't for her, so she dropped out and eventually started working on music. Lily's sound draws on her parent's music collection, which included such groundbreaking, female-fronted acts as Rip, Rig and Panic, the Slits and Blondie. But her fondness for hip-hop and urban storytellers also shines through both in her style of delivery and in her rock steady beats. Allen's reputation as a formidable voice from the street grew via her myspace page, and that led to her deal with Parlaphone. In late 2006, Allen's single "Smile" hit No. 1 on the UK charts. In 2007, Allen's debut album, Alright, Still, was released in the U.S., followed by It's Not Me, It's You in February 2009.

When Phoenix first hit American indie audiences, they were already tight with Beck and the French band Air. Hailing from the Parisian suburbs, Phoenix began putting their act together like any other suburban band -- in the garage. The band comprised of vocalist Thomas Mars, bassist Deck D'Arcy and guitarist Christian Mazzalai (his older brother Laurent "Branco" Brancowitz joined them in 1995 after playing in Darlin' with Thomas Bangalter and Guy Manuel de Homem-Christo, who would later become Daft Punk). On their first album, 2000's United, they lay down R&B-influenced grooves with 1980s-inspired synth pop to create their trademark sound of breezy, indie electro-pop. Their follow-up, 2004's Alphabetical, helped push the band a little further beyond the French music scene with the help of single "Everything is Everything." Next came extensive touring, the release of 2006's It's Never Been Like That and more touring. Phoenix made their biggest impact yet on the American audience when they performed on Saturday Night Live prior to dropping 2009's Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix.

MGMT (pronounced Management) are a restless electronic-rock duo. The two members -- Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser -- came together in 2002 while attending Wesleyan University in Connecticut as art students. In 2005, they released the catchy synth scrum "Time to Pretend," which became an underground hit and led to their being signed by Columbia Records. Their debut, Oracular Spectacular, a collection of sweeping, electronic Flaming Lips-style noise-pop songs, was released in 2007. Critical and popular accolades for the band reached a high at the CMJ Music Marathon a few weeks after the album's release. A tour alongside Of Montreal and a remix from Justice helped the band continue to merge its twin tendencies towards psychedelic pop and electro.

Matt & Kim is a Brooklyn-based indie-dance duo prone to bright, bouncy songs that hearken back to the days of '80s alternative rock, MTV's 120 Minutes and open sentimentality on the radio. Matt Johnson and Kim Schifino began performing in 2004, winning over a devoted underground following that grew thanks to a successful online campaign through MySpace and YouTube. Refreshingly devoid of irony, the art-school grads deliver relentlessly exuberant pop songs with perfectly recorded drums way up in the mix, trading off vocal duties and avoiding even the slightest hint of aggression despite the fact that the tempos are uniformly hyperactive. A self-titled debut album appeared in 2006, and after Matt & Kim performed at such name-making events as Lollapalooza and the Pitchfork Music Festival, their second full-length, Grand, turned up in 2009. That same year, "Daylight" was featured in a Bacardi commercial.

If there were a genre of music called Grey's Anatomy (and come on, there pretty much is), Ingrid Michaelson would be one of its key artists. Sensitive and smart, poignant and pretty, she writes intimate, introspective songs about love, heartbreak and growing up. Of course, she is the daughter of two sensitive artistic types -- Dad's a composer and Mom's a sculptor. Michaelson grew up on Staten Island, spent her childhood taking piano and voice lessons and got a degree in theater from Binghamton University. Along the way, she also started writing songs and self-released two albums. Pretty soon, her efforts earned her some high-profile fans -- namely, Old Navy and, yes, Grey's Anatomy, who decided Michaelson's dreamy, bespectacled musical aesthetic was just the thing for shilling casual wear and Meredith Grey's McAngst. And that, friends, is how you get to the top of the Grey's Anatomy genre, which is a pretty sweet spot in 2007.

Although she grew up in Canada, Nelly Furtado's parents were Portuguese immigrants, and she was raised surrounded by the rhythms of traditional Portuguese music. Still drawn to the beat years later, Furtado gravitated toward the popular rap and contemporary R&B groups of the day. Like many teenagers, she used music not only as a means of escape, but also as a way to fan the flames of her dreams. After graduating from high school, Furtado headed to Toronto, where she formed the hip-hop duo Nelster. Still working a day job, Furtado haunted clubs at night, until being spotted by Brian West and Gerald Eaton of the Philosopher Kings. The pair produced a demo that landed the chanteuse her deal with Dreamworks, and continued to turn the knobs on Furtado's 2000 debut, Whoa, Nelly!. Three years later, she issued the more reflective album, Folklore. Three years after that (and after giving birth to her daughter), Furtado took off in a completely different direction with Loose, a collection of sleek, sexy, hip-hop-infused dance pop (much of it, including the huge hit "Promiscuous," produced by Timbaland) aimed at conquering the top 40 -- which she certainly did. Another three years went by and it was time for -- you guessed it -- another new direction, this time with Mi Plan, a collection of Spanish-language pop.

When aspiring novelist Mikel Jollett was diagnosed with an auto-immune disease, suffered a bad break-up and received the awful news that his mother was diagnosed with cancer all in one week's time, The Airborne Toxic Event was born as a means of coping. Jollett abandoned novel-writing for songwriting and by the end of 2006, he had recruited guitarist/keyboardist Steven Chen, bassist Noah Harmon, drummer Daren Taylor and keyboardist/violinist Anna Bulbrook to help channel the pained-yet-relatable lyrics through their new wave-inspired indie pop musings. With Jollett's literary background, the lyrics read like stories set to music, while their dismal retelling is cloaked by the band's mostly upbeat tune. With ready comparisons to Arcade Fire and Interpol, The Airborne Toxic Event release their self-titled debut in 2008.

Despite a very gothic name, Vampire Weekend is actually a preppy indie-rock band from New York City. The quartet -- which includes singer Ezra Koenig, bassist Chris Baio, drummer Chris Tomson and keyboardist Rostam Batmanglij -- combines jangly rock and Afro-pop. Literate songwriting that's heavy on the happy vibes is combined with swirling guitars and African rhythms; imagine if Paul Simon had a World Studies-majoring love child with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Vampire Weekend formed in early 2006 while all four members were still attending Columbia University. Their self-released EP drew high praise from The New York Times, which called it one of 2007's best debuts. The band has since signed to XL Recordings, and its much-hyped first album was released in early 2008.

Led by the therapeutic vocals of Chris Carrabba, Dashboard Confessional have earned a fair amount of popularity with heartfelt, unplugged emo for those who can do without the genre's typically hard-hitting guitar theatrics, but value the music's sincerity. And sincerity is where Dashboard Confessional excel: Carraba's heart-on-sleeve vocals and songwriting exude feeling and melody, much to the delight of melancholy teens in search of a like-minded voice. It's a long way from Rites of Spring (or even Sunny Day Real Estate), but it's obvious why so many take this to heart.

There aren't many groups like Animal Collective. The only bands that spring to mind are the Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev. As with both of them heavy weights, Animal Collective is a profoundly avant-garde project that just so happens to make some of the most hummable jammers of the 21st century. They drawn inspiration from an absurd number of influences, including but not limited to Brit pop, experimental noise, vintage psychedelia, minimal techno, industrial, golden oldies, post-hardcore, dub and world music. Far more important, however, is how Animal Collective has synthesized all this good stuff into a phantasmagoric brand of tribal pop that's not at all pretentious or overly cerebral. In fact, it shimmers with a uranium-enriched sincerity best understood by nervous teens all strung-out on first loves, energy drinks and hormones. Of course, this is an aesthetic that's taken the band years to develop. Most ears will find early albums like Here Comes the Indian and the underrated Danse Manatee too extreme in their sonic freakery, but more recent works -- Feels, Strawberry Jam, Merriweather Post Pavilion -- will surely blow away those craving impeccably well-crafted indie rock.

Beirut interpret gypsy folk from an indie perspective. At the center of the group is young prodigy Zach Condon, who delves deep into traditional roots music from Eastern Europe and the Balkans as well as the mariachi of his native Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was first introduced to gypsy folk music through the films of director Emir Kusturica (Time of the Gypsies, Underground). Rather than trying to merely copy gypsy songs, he borrows its sounds to make emotive pop that's full of joy, sadness and longing. On the band's 2006 debut, The Gulag Orkestar, Condon takes a DIY approach where he sings and plays most of the instruments (saxophone, clarinet, mandolin, accordion and others). His very original take on regional folk brought Beirut critical acclaim, while their live shows -- complete with full brass and string sections -- drew international audiences throughout North America and Europe. On his sophomore album, The Flying Club Cup, with its decidedly French cabaret flair, Condon teamed up with multitalented violinist-producer Owen Pallett of Final Fantasy.

If you want to hear beautiful pop songs about traveling on buses, personal recollections made in natural surroundings, and depressive whimsy, look no further than Scottish seven-piece Belle and Sebastian. Led by Stuart Murdoch, the band are wonderfully literate and their music is strong enough to make them heroes in such non-English speaking countries as France. Their shimmering, multi-layered folk pop -- like that of the otherwise very different Lambchop -- only gets lighter with each additional instrument. An indie Horatio Alger story, B&S came out of nowhere in 1996, quickly selling all 1,000 copies of their critically acclaimed debut Tigermilk. Going from a university project to a professional outfit, the album If You're Feeling Sinister only built on their success, but The Boy With the Arab Strap (1998) refreshingly added songwriting and singing voices other than Murdoch's to the mix. Full of heartache, country lanes and dewy pastures, Belle and Sebastian's songs allow you to get away from your sorry life and examine it simultaneously.

The National create darkly serious, literate and lush indie rock that reached critical mass with the group's fourth album, 2007’s Boxer, which reached Number Five on Billboard’s Top Independent Albums chart.

Formed in Brooklyn, New York, the band is composed of Ohio friends Matt Berninger, whose brooding baritone is reminiscent of musical precursors like the late Joy Division singer Ian Curtis; guitarist Scott Devendorf and his drummer brother Bryan; bassist Aaron Dessner and his guitarist brother Bryce. The band has recruited a number of horn, strings and keyboard players for its albums including regular keyboardist and strings arranger Padma Newsome.

The National’s 2001 self-titled debut, self-released on Brassland Records, was heralded for its mix of melodic alt-country and bleak, introspective lyrics, but the band members had not yet quit their day jobs in the dot-com industry. After releasing a second Brassland album two years later — the similarly somber Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers — the band attracted the attention of established indie label Beggars Banquet. The National became a full-time band with its 2005 Beggars Banquet debut Alligator</I<, on which Berninger continued his cockeyed, fatalistic meditations on dysfunctional relationships, insanity and the dark underbelly of New York nightlife. Boxer, released in May 2007, was hailed across the board as the band’s richest, most mature work to date.

Welsh songstress Jem was drawn to music from an early age and was writing her own songs by the time she hit her teens. However, like many "sensible" young people, she put her musical aspirations on hold while she concentrated on her studies. But in college her passion for music ignited once again, drawing her into the industry in a variety of behind-the-scenes jobs, including club promoter and local DJ representative. These jobs eventually led Jem to set up her own breaks label, Marine Parade. With all these creative resources at her disposal, it wasn't long before the songwriting bug bit her again. She quit her job, assembled a collection of demos, and moved to London. While her tapes made the rounds, Jem met other likeminded souls to collaborate with, including producer Guy Sisgworth (Frou Frou, Bjork). The fruit of their collaboration, "Nobody Knows Me," was picked up by Madonna and appears on her American Life album. Never one to rest on her laurels, Jem headed to New York and met hip-hop producers Ge-Ology (Mos Def, Talib Kweli) and Yoad Nevo. Together, they streamlined Jem's various influences into a fresh, cohesive sound. A demo tape of these sessions found its way onto the Los Angeles airwaves via KCRW's Morning Becomes Ecclectic show, and Jem was signed shortly after. Her debut EP, It All Starts Here, was released in 2003, followed the next year by her debut album.

Sure, she's cute, sweet and quirky, but Sweden's Lykke Li (pronounced Lick-ee Lee) also has a confident charisma primed for pop-sweetheart status. As a kid, Li and her family traveled much, roaming from Stockholm to places like Portugal, Morocco, Nepal and India. Her nomadic upbringing would later filter into the retro-chic blend of indie pop showcased on her 2008 debut album, Youth Novels. Produced by Bjorn Yttling of Peter Bjorn and John fame, the album bounces with heavy bass and subtle electro beats, sporadically replaced by calypso rhythms, flamenco guitar, trumpet blasts and saxophone trills. With sing-talk mantras, poignant confessionals and upbeat sing-alongs, Li's delicate pixie coos are the main attraction.

Arena rock built byte-by-byte: Ratatat has sonic ambitions way beyond their two-dude-in-a-bedroom setup. Brooklynites Evan Mast and Mike Stroud got their break in 2002 when their first single, "17 Years," released on Mast's own Audiodregs label, gained attention from DJs across the U.S. With Mast on beat production and bass and Stroud -- a sought-after guitarist who also plays in Dashboard Confessional's touring lineup -- ripping up various looped six-strings, Ratatat released its self-titled debut in 2003 and opened for a slew of major indie acts. Their stripped down, amped up sound appealed to rockers and rappers enough that they self-released a CD of their own compositions backing a cappella tracks by Jay-Z, Missy Elliot, Raekwon and more. Their official sophomore album, 2006's Classics, was mostly recorded in upstate New York and substantially broadened their style. Ask 'em and Ratatat will try to convince you that small is the new big.

Formed in 2002 with two ex-members of rival Chicago bands, the Academy Is usually get lumped in with the rest of the emo stable on the Fueled By Ramen label. This makes some sense since Pete Wentz, the bassist in Fall Out Boy and FBR talent scout, has an ear for next-generation pop-punk and brought them aboard, along with a majority of the label's other recent signings. Their earnest coming-of-age stories combined with vocalist William Beckett's smooth delivery has vaulted these kids into a more grown-up level of sound and songwriting. Could it possibly be called "post-teeno"? It could. Though the lyrics touch upon mature topics like serious relationships and mortality, the Academy Is still manage to rock out with the rest of the crowd; they've just graduated beyond the temper tantrums.

According to lore, it was Steve Jobs himself who chose "New Soul" from Yael Naim's self-titled sophomore LP for a ubiquitous Apple laptop commercial, thus handing the French-Israeli singer songwriter an instant, international audience. Born in Paris, Naim spent most of her childhood in Israel where she began studies of the piano at the age of 10 and performed with a group called the Anti Collision. She signed her first contract with EMI in 2000 and made her first solo record, In A Man's Womb, in 2001. Some five years later she set to work with multi-instrumentalist David Donatien on the self-titled follow up, recording it mostly in a Paris apartment. A blend of folk, pop and jazz elements were the backdrop for her songs sung in French, English and Hebrew, with the resulting album being released on French indie label Tot ou Tard. The record received quiet praise after its 2007 release, but entered the Billboard Top 10 shortly after its inclusion in the aforementioned commercial.

Mika's sugary wonderland of gender-bending, campy pop topped with a flawless falsetto has earned him respectable comparisons to the likes of Freddie Mercury, David Bowie and the Scissor Sisters. Born in Beirut as Michael Holbrook Penniman, he moved with his family from Lebanon to Paris and eventually settled in London when he was nine years old. The move proved troubling for him, as he faced bullying at school and the onset of dyslexia. Mika's focus turned to music when he began intense training with a Russian singing teacher, which led to professional performances at the Royal Opera House and advertising gigs for British Airways and Orbit Chewing Gum. He studied classical music at the prestigious Royal College of Music, but dropped out to focus on his career. Mika's first step into the fickle pop world was the release of his single "Relax, Take It Easy," but it was "Grace Kelly," a stab at those who didn't believe in his musical potential, that shot him to No. 1 on the U.K. charts in early 2007. His debut album, Life in Cartoon Motion, soon followed the same chart-topping path.

Singer/pianist Greta Salpeter and guitarist Bob Morris formed the Hush Sound in Chicago in 2004, although the pair had been friends and musical partners for years -- since Salpeter was in 7th grade and Morris was in 10th, in fact. With Morris' background in rock music and Salpeter's training in classical piano, the duo enlisted a rhythm section and set out to construct a highly distinctive form of outsider art rock, with bouncing tempos and radical, midsong shifts in musical styles that point to broad tastes, highlighted by Salpeter's gently beautiful singing voice. Morris shares singing duties on roughly half the songs. Their Fueled by Ramen debut, So Sudden, appeared in 2005, Like Vines followed in 2006, and in 2008 the quartet released Goodbye Blues, featuring the statement-of-purpose winner "Honey."

An underground UK phenomenon rapidly moving their way up the international ranks, Hot Chip began as the two-man production team of Alexis Taylor and Joe Goddard. The pair made beats and sang their soft falsettos in Goddard's bedroom and released their debut EP, Mexico, on a small London imprint in 2001. Hot Chip evolved their lazy, hip-hop inflected sound over the years, adding scraps of toy percussion and analog synths and taking on new members. They gained critical attention on the strength of 2005's Coming on Strong, their American debut, but it was 2006's Mercury Prize-nominated The Warning that exposed the band now a fulltime four-piece to larger audiences. While their albums are mostly laid back, toe-tapping disco affairs, their live shows are explosive and sweaty, especially for four pasty-white English guys playing synthesizers.

Coconut Records is Jason Schwartzman. Yep, that would be the actor best known for his roles in Wes Anderson flicks like Rushmore and The Darjeeling Limited. But even before making it in Hollywood, Schwartzman was the drummer and songwriter for California indie band Phantom Planet. Forming a one-man-band was therefore a natural transition for the budding performer. As Coconut Records, he brings a similar carefree stoicism that has made his characters on screen thrive. Influenced by '60s Beach Boys, the Beatles and modern West Coast indie popsters like Weezer, Schwartzman plays nearly every instrument on his self-written and -recorded 2007 debut Nighttiming. He followed it up with by 2009's Davy.

The New Pornographers formed in 1997 in Vancouver, British Columbia, and became one of the most critically and popularly cherished indie pop bands of the next decade for displaying a keen affection for great power pop icons of the '70s. The rotating membership is overseen by primary songwriter Carl Newman, though it has included a number of other marquee collaborators including Chicago alt country darling Neko Case and Dan Bejar who fronts his own cultishly popular act, Destroyer. If the main influences sighted by the band were Burt Bacharach and Brian Wilson, the quick melodic turns, clever lyrics, and structural complexity evoke other modern power pop bands like Sloan and Superdrag.

In 2002, Dave Longstreth left music composition studies at Yale University to pursue a career in music, eventually assuming the name of the Dirty Projectors. Even on early recordings, Longstreth's somewhat manic output was a collision of hi-fi and lo-fi aesthetics rooted in academic complexity as he combined elegant melodies, knotty rhythms and sophisticated harmonic architecture. Longstreth released his first solo work in 2002, titled The Graceful Fallen Mango, followed by the first LP under the Dirty Projectors moniker, The Glad Fact, released in 2003 on Austin-based Western Vinyl. LPs followed in 2005 and 2007 -- The Getty Address and Rise Above, respectively -- each finding a wider audience, new supporting musicians and greater critical acclaim. In 2006, Longstreth was joined for the first time by Amber Coffman, whose vocals became a key element of the band's sound. In 2009, their profile increased further, hooking collaborations with Bjork and David Byrne, along with releasing the highly acclaimed Bitte Orca.

If you want rock stars, go to England. If, however, you crave quirky cult acts, head north to Scotland. Ever since the rise of post-punk in the early '80s, the land of Scots has produced many of the United Kingdom's most beloved underdogs, including Fire Engines, the Pastels, Teenage Fanclub, the Vaselines and Belle & Sebastian. As with all these groups, Glasgow's Frightened Rabbit fuses art school indie pop and stripped down folk-rock, while filtering its influences -- everything from Interpol to Joe Jackson to Thin Lizzy -- through a fragile tenderness and naked earnestness that seems to be uniquely Scottish. While stuttering, manic rhythms and neo-Edge guitar buzzzz fly about his head, Scott Hutchison mumbles very few words that don't take five spins to understand. The dude's thick accent is partly to blame, but Hutchinson also sounds as if he's afraid to make himself easily understood. This only makes sense considering his mom used to call her shy little child a "frightened rabbit" because of the way he would cower in social situations. Obviously that's something Hutchinson has addressed; in 2007 the quartet signed to the ever-hip Fat Cat imprint, also home to Animal Collective, Blood on the Wall and Mice Parade.

Based in Copenhagen and incorporating musicians from across Europe and Japan, Blue Foundation produces music that shows just as much range, combining traces of New Order's melodic post-punk, My Bloody Valentine's starry-eyed shoegaze and the electronic-tinged pop of Air and Zero 7. The brainchild of Bichi Tobias Wilner, around whom revolves a shifting group of singers and instrumentalists, Blue Foundation's first release was a 2000 single on Moshi Moshi, the label that also gave Hot Chip their first leg up. Throughout the decade, the band racked up an impressively packed discography whose sound went in increasingly sophisticated (and radio-friendly) directions. The group's appearance on the Twilight soundtrack sealed its reputation as a band on the move. For those just discovering Blue Foundation, begin with 2007's richly textured Life of a Ghost and work your way backward.

St. Vincent is Annie Clark, multitalented singer-songwriter and indie pop darling. Clark's distinctive sound melds an eccentric flair and a touch of drama with a Berklee-educated talent. The Oklahoma-born musician fine-tuned her chops after dropping out of college to join the massive alt-rock group the Polyphonic Spree, and soon after she hopped on tour backing Sufjan Stevens. In 2007, Clark released her debut solo album under the St. Vincent moniker. Marry Me is a beautiful, orchestral affair aided by a choir and numerous guest musicians on strings, brass, piano, synths and percussion. It's the first glimpse into Clark's versatility, not only as a writer and singer but also as a musician who plays everything from the organ to the dulcimer. St. Vincent's sophomore album, Actor, followed in 2009. The album's theatrical themes and whimsical arrangements helped land Clark much critical acclaim, not to mention a debut spot at No. 90 on the U.S. Billboard charts.

If it isn't already, "timing is everything" ought to be Lenka's motto. After spending time in art school and with Sydney band Decoder Ring, the Australian singer-songwriter (born Lenka Kripac) hopped on a plane for Los Angeles and arrived just in time for what we'd like to call the Feist-icization of pop. The warm, intimate vocals, oh-so-slightly cheeky lyrics and quiet whimsy of the brand of soulful pop-folk popularized by the likes of Ingrid Michaelson and Colbie Caillat suited Lenka just fine. After some early rave reviews but little actual exposure, Lenka's version of the coffee-shop pop trend started to take off with singles like "Follow" and "The Show."

Contrary to the name, not all the kids are black, just siblings Reggie and Ali Youngblood. That makes this multiracial act the Paul Butterfield Blues Band of sassy, post-modern new wave; think the Go! Team filtered through the Cure and those criminally underappreciated Brit-pop dudes in James. Coming together in swampy Jacksonville, Fla., in 2006, the quintet blew up in a minute. Like a lot of buzz bands, they posted some demos to MySpace (the insanely infectious Wizard of Ahhhs EP). Of course, Pitchfork started drooling all over them, as did folks grooving to Black Kids' sweaty, feel-good concerts throughout the South. Signing with Columbia Records, Black Kids went into the studio with producer Bernard Butler. On the band's debut album, Partie Traumatic, former Suede guitarist Butler once again proves to be a pop master, bringing to the surface the group's latent ties to peppy AM pop, as well as the early-'80s R&B of New Edition and Michael Jackson. Whether all the hype and praise makes you love or hate Black Kids, tunes like "I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With You" and "I Wanna Be Your Limousine" are classic teenage fun. Now get out there and bop.

Before forming Rogue Wave, Zach Rogue was in a San Francisco band called the Desoto Reds who really liked Guided By Voices -- so much so that their early demos were often panned as derivative. When 90% of the new businesses by the Bay went belly up, Rogue was one of thousands laid off, so he went to New York City with a head full of songs and nothing but time to put them down on tape. Apart from drums, he played every instrument and sang every song on what would become the debut album of the band he put together with four friends after moving back to San Francisco. Rogue Wave worked their asses off at the grassroots level, garnering a dedicated following and the momentum of a giant avalanche until Sub Pop had no choice but to sign the band before another label picked them up. Live, the group effortlessly approximates the stellar arrangements found on their debut, but they also add their own trademark flair and style, changing instruments every other song much like the Coctails did in their heyday. While the songs still display vestiges of a love for G.B.V. (as well as Built To Spill), Rogue's soaring inflections and song structures elevate the listener to unpredictable plateaus. Winding guitars, pulsing rhythms and lovelorn lyrics pull from a myriad of genre influences (folk, psychedelia, post-punk), while sustaining what is fast becoming a trademark sound.

Much like fellow New York troubadours Langhorne Slim and Phosphorescent, singer-songwriter John McCauley, aka Deer Tick, crafts quirky Americana that's as influenced by Brit pop and indie rock as it is folk and country. Born and raised in Providence, R.I., McCauley is something of a phenom. He began writing, recording and releasing homemade CD-Rs and cassettes while still attending high school. This do-it-yourself mentality extends to most aspects of his career, including live shows, which he himself books and promotes. Freak-folk diva Jana Hunter eventually signed McCauley (now living in New York) to her Feow! label, which dropped his debut, War Elephant, in September 2007. The album, produced and financed by the artist, features a mix of solo recordings and tunes employing a backing band. Rock critics made more than a few comparisons to Townes Van Zandt and Neil Young, but the record also boasts touches of the La's and Violent Femmes, as well as vintage rock 'n' roll and AM pop a la Roy Orbison and Ritchie Valens. After lengthy stints on the road, McCauley assembled a new supporting cast and entered the studio to record Born on Flag Day, the follow-up to War Elephant.

In the early 21st century, America has produced two truly great pop bands: Animal Collective and Dr. Dog. But where the former takes Brian Wilson's sound into a global psychedelic future torn from the pages of a sci-fi novel, the latter drives it further into the annals of pop history. In fact, it's hard to even call Dr. Dog indie, which is how music critics generally describe their music. Even on early, homemade releases like Toothbrush and Easy Beat, the Philadelphia outfit exhibited a knack for refined melodies and classic composition that's far more in debt to Tin Pan Alley and the Brill Building than, say, the rudimentary hooks of the Velvet Underground's third and fourth records (indie pop's double helix). By 2007's We All Belong, the Dog had shed all those nagging comparisons to Beachwood Sparks and all those Elephant 6 acts, crafting a funky fusion of blue-eyed soul (hey, they're from Philly) and intricate, multilayered harmonies. "My Old Ways" even sounds like a Broadway tune. Indie kids simply don't emote like this. The band grooves and bubbles and loves and romances the way pop groups used to. Blatant nostalgia never sounded so darn sweet.

Throw Me the Statue is a breezy indie pop band that veers off into power pop and folk. Think Belle & Sebastian meets the Shins as interpreted by Robert Pollard and Ben Gibbard. Behind it all is the multi-tasking DIY musician Scott Reitherman, whose instrumentation includes drum machines, synthesizers, guitars and even the occasional glockenspiel. Though the Seattle-based musician primarily sticks to being a one-man band, for 2008's Moonbeams he called on the support of Pedro the Lion's Casey Foubert and Sufjan Stevens' backing band. While Reitherman has been self-releasing material since 2004 on his own label, Baskerville Hill Records, Moonbeams is his first for Secretly Canadian.

Deer Tick, the Donkeys, Delta Spirit, the Dreadful Yawns: What all these artists have in common is a love for filtering percussive indie pop through acoustic-based folk rock. Add to that list Canada's the Rural Alberta Advantage (wild name, right?). Hailing from Toronto, a metropolis that has produced more than its fair share of killer indie bands, the trio of Nils Edenloff, Amy Cole and Paul Banwatt emerged in 2005 from the ashes of several local favorites. After releasing a demo tape and an EP, the Rural Alberta Advantage found themselves in BoomBox Sound recording Hometowns, their debut album. Strong songwriting, peppy rhythms and Edenloff's earnest, brittle yelp gave the group an underground buzz throughout Canada, where they toured extensively for three years. That, of course, sounds like a never-ending grind, but the hard work paid off. In 2009 Nebraska's Saddle Creek label, founded by Conor and Justin Oberst, added the Rural Alberta Advantage to its already impressive stable of artists. To kick off the new relationship, Saddle Creek reissued Hometowns, a move that has given the record far greater exposure the second time around.

Au Revoir Simone take the burbling, pinging sound of early 1980s synth pop and replace the robotic feel with warm music that suits bucolic picnics better than cyborg weddings. In the early 2000s, Erika Forster (who had previously been in Dirty on Purpose), Annie Hart and Heather D'Angelo formed a trio around their love of retro keyboards. Even though they had to learn their instruments, things gelled quickly. Their debut album, Verses of Comfort, Assurance & Salvation, recalled Birdie and Saint Etienne (as well as the mellower side of indie rock bands such as Yo La Tengo) rather than the cold man/machine feel of other bands playing with analog synths and keyboards. The album's lead-off track, "Through the Backyards," was played on an episode of Grey's Anatomy, exposing millions of people to Au Revoir Simone. The trio supported TV on the Radio and toured Europe and Japan. The band was featured in Peter Bjorn & John's video to "Young Folks" (a massive hit in the U.K.) and received further press when the director David Lynch requested they play for him in New York City. Au Revoir Simone released their simply lovely album The Bird of Music in early 2007.

A singer-songwriter who pinpoints emotional moments in time with a cool, almost detached style, Keren Ann's delicate, subtle songs grow richer and cut deeper with repeated listening. Keren Ann Zeidel spent her early years in her parents' respective countries of origin -- Holland and Israel -- before settling in Paris at the age of 11. She eventually took to 1960s and '70s guitar pop and '50s vocal jazz and fell in with a group of like-minded musical artists such as Benjamin Biolay, his sister Coralie Clement and Vincent Delerm (European cohorts would include Sondre Lerche, Kings of Convenience and Belle & Sebastian.). After playing in various bands, Keren Ann signed with EMI in 2002 and collaborated with the prodigiously talented Biolay on her solo debut, La Biographie de Luka Philipsen. The album's lovely mix of bittersweet folk-pop, swirling '60s orchestral arrangements and discreet modern downtempo elements was an immediate popular and artistic hit in France. Keren Ann and co-songwriter/arranger Biolay were so productive that they followed the debut up with the sparser La Disparition (The Disappearance) the same year (!) and the album was almost as impressive as their debut. As a lark, Keren Ann recorded a set of unaccented English language demos on her own and was surprised to find that her record label wanted them released. Beefed up by Biolay's typically subtle arrangements, the set was recorded as I'm Not Going Anywhere (2004) and earned the singer an American distribution deal and rave reviews on both sides of the pond. Dividing her time between Paris and New York, Keren Ann crafted the home-recorded Nolita (2005), her first bilingual album and her first without Biolay on board. It once again touches on themes of dislocation, solitude and memory, all handled with the calm, collected and slightly mysterious manner that has become her trademark.

Delta Spirit combine an enchanting array of Brit pop, pub rock and bluesy Americana. With influences that run from the Beatles and Bob Dylan to the Strokes and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, the San Diego quintet plays rowdy romps alongside acoustic lullabies, piano ballads and rootsy, harmonica-driven melodies. Bassist Jon Jameson and drummer Brandon Young played together in the emo band Noise Ratchet before joining forces with vocalist Matthew Vasquez, guitarist Sean Walker and multi-instrumentalist Kelly Winrich to form Delta Spirit in 2005. After obtaining a significant underground following while touring with like-minded indie rockers Dr. Dog, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and Cold War Kids, Delta Spirit opted to self-release their debut, Ode to Sunshine, in 2007; it would be re-released in 2008 by Rounder Records.

The Last Shadow Puppets is a side project from Alex Turner (Arctic Monkeys) and Miles Kane (the Little Flames and the Rascals) that came about when they found themselves obsessively listening to the spaghetti western-fueled dramatic pop of Scott Walker and his band the Walker Brothers. In 2008, the two wrote a terrific batch of melodramatic, retro-flavored pop songs and worked with arranger Owen Pallett (Arcade Fire, Beirut, the Hidden Cameras) to come up with their debut album, The Age of Understatement. The album earned strong reviews in Britain, and the band showed that they could rock a string section with an energetic live show.
