There aren't many groups like Animal Collective. The only bands that spring to mind are the Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev. As with both of them heavy weights, Animal Collective is a profoundly avant-garde project that just so happens to make some of the most hummable jammers of the 21st century. They drawn inspiration from an absurd number of influences, including but not limited to Brit pop, experimental noise, vintage psychedelia, minimal techno, industrial, golden oldies, post-hardcore, dub and world music. Far more important, however, is how Animal Collective has synthesized all this good stuff into a phantasmagoric brand of tribal pop that's not at all pretentious or overly cerebral. In fact, it shimmers with a uranium-enriched sincerity best understood by nervous teens all strung-out on first loves, energy drinks and hormones. Of course, this is an aesthetic that's taken the band years to develop. Most ears will find early albums like Here Comes the Indian and the underrated Danse Manatee too extreme in their sonic freakery, but more recent works -- Feels, Strawberry Jam, Merriweather Post Pavilion -- will surely blow away those craving impeccably well-crafted indie rock.

John Darnielle has managed to endear himself to the Indie Rock-buying public , despite -- or because of? -- the fact that his recordings are Homemade with a capital "H." Actually, with Darnielle's songs the format works quite well, as it accentuates the earthy folksiness of his songs. At times, he bears a striking resemblance to the ill-fated, politically oriented Phil Ochs: this similarity is only accentuated when he sings with violent passion (and more than a hint of nose), "You can arm me to the teeth / You can't make me go to war." 1960s, anyone? Darnielle does occasionally drop his acoustic guitar to employ the dated keyboards, cheesy drum machines and ironic lyrics that have become associated with Lo-Fi -- a line such as "Bill Gates will spearhead the Heaven 17 revival," will cause many a postmodernist to crack up. But it's not irony that makes the Mountain Goats appealing. Rather, it's the fact that Darnielle is so believable and honest without being overly earnest, so smart without being pretentious, and so willing to communicate without worrying about perfection.

Brother and sister Matthew and Eleanor Friedburger formed the Fiery Furnaces, after finding themselves both living in New York in 2001. With Eleanor on vocals and rhythm guitar, and Matthew on lead guitar, they managed to take a very traditional arrangement and turn it into one of the great surprises of 2003 when their debut, Gallowsbird Bark, was released. At a time when many of their peers were claiming to be influenced by the blues and post-punk, the Fiery Furnaces managed to take those influences and create a sound much more unique. From music-hall theatrics, to Captain Beefheart's chunky blues abstractions, from the bare-bones Velvet Underground drones, to sloppy classic rock in the vein of Royal Trux, the Fiery Furnaces just sound different than anybody else. Eleanor Friedburger's vocals are distinct, tough and when she wraps them around phrases like, "you've got a wing in your snaggle tooth, and you can't kick it back with no 80-proof," it all makes sense in a surreal rock 'n' roll way that happens when nothing suddenly means everything. The release of 2004's Blueberry Boat upped the ante and tripled the song length. Each tune is like a version of the Who's mini-rock epic, "A Quick One," but with rather idiosyncratic lyrics about pirates and blueberries. Bold, ambitious, twisted and above all, great songwriters, the Fiery Furnaces continue to keep things interesting.

A key member of the oddball coalition known as Anticon, Why? began recording in his hometown of Cincinnati, eventually hooking up with burgeoning weird-rap hero Dose One and champion DJ Mr. Dibbs while attending art school. He performed with a live improv group called Apogee and started putting out tapes under the name greenthink. In addition to releasing solo albums, Why? has recorded and toured extensively with his critically acclaimed group cLOUDDEAD. Like his Anticon peers, he boasts a musical style that's challenging and unconventional -- you either love it or hate it.

The music coming out of Scotland in the mid '80s was a primitive force that could be just as naive as it was brilliant. The Vaselines were no exception to this rule. With roots in fellow Scottish bands like the Shop Assistants and the Pastels, the Vaselines brought Eugene Kelly's edgy, scratchy guitar work together with Frances McKee's poetic melancholia. Their vocals were a shining light with Eugene's dry, monotone voice trading off with Frances' more charming, off-key sound. Not a serious band by any means, their carnal obsessions were given as much time as their off-kilter pop experiments. As Eugene Kelly went on to form the equally great Captain America a.k.a. Eugenius, the Vaselines were championed by then nascent alt-icons Nirvana, which saw a huge, much deserved resurgence of interest and virtually worldwide availability of their music.

Texas-based Daniel Johnston has been releasing endearingly unrefined music to the public since he began unleashing home-recorded cassette tapes in 1980. Much of his cult following stemmed from these tapes as well as from the MTV coverage he received during the mid '80s. The finished results of Johnston's Lo-Fi tomfoolery have been covered by such seminal Indie Rock goblins as Sonic Youth, Nirvana, Yo La Tengo, Butthole Surfers and Half Japanese to name a few. Johnston's vivacious pop songs are usually laden with chiming guitar, clunky keyboards, distant rhythms, and a sometimes sinister, sometimes child-like perspective on life. Unlike his contemporaries (such as Lou Barlow), Johnston often seems too lost in his own Syd Barret-like condition to write jaded and cynical songs.

Wavves is Nathan Williams, a sassy beach/skate punk from San Diego who spends long hours in his bedroom, crafting four-track fuzz pop that's as violent and primitive as it is ecstatic and catchy. Early blog-o-buzz drew a lot of comparisons to hip twee revivalists like the Vivian Girls, the Pains of Being Pure at Heart and Crystal Stilts, but Williams is way more blown out, spazzed out and tripped out. For the know-it-all record dorks out there, imagine early '60s surf pop filtered through the skate punk of the Descendents then fed to the Happy Flowers' squealing, temper-tantrum noise-rock. Or, to put it another way: if the Beach Boys are "The Warmth of the Sun" (one of their all-time classics), then Wavves is one of those fourth-degree sunburns -- a gooey swirl of radiant colors that's gross, yet oddly mesmerizing. That's some gnarly imagery for sure, but don't let it prevent you from checking this dude out. Despite a wall of sound built from layers of lo-fi tape crunch, Williams' first two albums -- Wavves and, uh, Wavvves -- possess all the touchstones of vintage California bubblegum: hooks that are sweet and simple, hummable melodies and a suburban-bred restlessness.

Saturday Looks Good to Me is a collective from southeast Michigan that revolves around singer-songwriter Fred Thomas. Thomas, an occasional member of His Name Is Alive, started the band in 1999 using musicians from the University of Michigan and Detroit garage scenes, with whom he released the group's self-titled debut in May of 2000. Like His Name Is Alive, Saturday Looks Good To Me used an array of female vocalists, including Erika Hoffmann of Godzuki and Risa Buburniak and Brooke Rossi of Michigan indie act the Sparklers. Greatly influenced by wall of sound fans like the Magnetic Fields and Belle & Sebastian, Thomas continued to write and release records, eventually signing with Polyvinyl for 2003's All Your Summer Songs and 2004's Every Night. Armed with a drum machine and synthesizers, Thomas chose to mime '80s pop instead of '60s pop with 2007's Sound On Sound, which was released on Redder Records.

Her Space Holiday is Marc Bianchi, a hard-working singer-songwriter and home-recordist who offers beautiful, even playful, sorts of innovative indie pop. Panned right-to-left synths reminiscent of the 1980s fuel stark, New Romantic by-way-of Techno songs with low-bit sampled beats and digital R&B (think Michael Jackson's "Rock With You"). Even his straightforward, guitar-driven Indie Rock is kinetic and expressive. Like those of Yo La Tengo, and more recently Brittle Stars, Bianchi's songs create more than their simple, enchanting progressions and single-note guitars do outright. It's easy to lose yourself in the blissful atmospherics of HSH's big, hollow droning and agitated, drum-machined rhythms.

Little Wings is the musical vehicle of writer, artist, surfer, and songwriter Kyle Field. Originally assembling a loose collective of musicians from San Luis Obispo, he recorded his debut, Discover Worlds Of Wonder in 2000. With gentle melodies and tales of modern Northern California Bohemia, the record set the template for the career to follow. In 2002 K. Records released three records, Wonderue, Light Green Leaves and The Wonder City. In 2003 the same label released Harvest Joy, which was followed a year later by Magic Wand, and in 2005 with Grow.

The Prize Fighter Inferno is the side-project of Coheed and Cambria frontman Claudio Sanchez. As fans of that C&C music factory well know, Sanchez' imagination knows no bounds. Like his other band, this project is a vehicle for telling the story of a fictional time and place -- Sanchez' own personal Star Wars. Musically speaking, however, Prize Fighter relies more on computer beats and bleeps than Coheed's mighty rock theatrics. The music is more subdued, but Sanchez' wet, reedy vocals and fantastical lyrics are front and center for both.

Times New Viking is a lo-fi band from Columbus, Ohio. The trio -- guitarist Jared Phillips, keyboardist Beth Murphy and drummer Adam Elliott -- takes abrasive indie-rock and haphazardly plies it with '60s bubblegum pop. In 2005, they released Dig Yourself, a noisy barrage of garage feedback that sounds like it was recorded on a boom-box. For their third album, Rip It Off, the group signed to Matador Records to release more trebly and contagious sweetness.

Guitar player from baggy-gone-Brit Pop-gone-sloppy-Lo-Fi band Blur delivers a solo experiment with some songs that seem to purposefully aim right between the eyes of a loose, American, indie rock ethic. Where in Blur he usually solos over hooky pop like a scattered six-string demon, Coxon's solo material seems dumbed-down into the kind of premeditated, monotonous guitar strumming, predictable distortion layers on the choruses, and indecisively pensive lyrics that trust-fund kids with beat-up Chuck Taylors and expendable record collections are sure to enjoy -- that is, until Coxon signs to a major label.

The Shaggs were four teenage girls living in Fremont, New Hampshire, in the late 1960s, who were forced to form a band and play music by their insane father. With no training and no apparent understanding of music theory, the girls came up with music that defies categorization. Their one album, Philosophy of the World, recorded in 1969, sounds like nothing that has come before it or since. The girls' sense of rhythm stands outside the parameters of mathematics and the vocal harmonies they employ so closely follow the guitar lines that it creates a weird atonal quality. Their extremely severe New England accents didn't help the musicality either, making their singing sound even more bizarre. The Shaggs have long been the butt of many jokes, and their music is considered the pinnacle of laughable oddities by record geeks and hipsters, but the poor girls were more the victims of abuse than misguided fame-seekers. On the advice of a fortune teller, their father formed the band and secured them a weekly gig at the local auditorium. In interviews the girls have described their reception by the people of their town as anything but positive, but they were forced to play anyway. Heaping insult upon injury, the girls had to clean the auditorium after their shows. But in the end, the songs totally blow any fake simplistic garbage Jonathan Richman or Jad Fair wrote out of the water, or any other jokers who've made a name for themselves by acting like they were deconstructing pop music because they didn't know any better. The Shaggs' music may be awful, but it remains some of the most unique and guileless stuff ever recorded.

Neo-psychedelic pop doesn't come wrapped up more perfectly than the Olivia Tremor Control. Although their "even the sprinkler is an instrument" guide to homemade atmospherics can prove to be frustrating, the group's three-minute pop extravaganzas propel them to the forefront of their retro-pop contemporaries. Cascading vocals, multiple harmonies, "Yellow Submarine" imagery and handclaps blend and show deference to past pop masterpieces without identifying them as singularly "Beatles-esque."

Jad Fair's spastic poetry and retardo-genius guitar playing are often found in their most accessible form on Half Japanese records. For the uninitiated, "accessible" by Jad Fair standards can be read as "just this side of coherent." Since 1977 Jad and (intermittently) brother David have been backed by a revolving lineup of underground royalty as they rip apart rock 'n' roll structures. At their best, on a song like "Charmed Life," the band sounds like Pussy Galore fronted by Buddy Holly. At their worst they still kick the hell out of anybody whose ever tried to deconstruct something as stupid as rock 'n' roll. A perpetual state of adolescent horniness marks the proceedings, with Fair inexplicably managing to sound genuinely innocent in the midst of furious, caterwauling Noise Rock. To the educated musician, Half Japanese is a nightmare; the joyful celebration of instrumental incompetence is the sort of thing that makes Berklee students purple with rage. But for folks who think "Sister Ray" is about as good as it gets, Half Japanese can be a revelation.

You could say Fog epitomizes post-millenial independent music making. The nom de plume of Minneapolis' Andrew Broder, Fog started releasing records in 2002, and since then has wound its way through every conceivable genre invented, as well has plenty that have yet to be. Broder's self-titled debut was released on Ninja Tune, back when most folks thought of him as mainly a turntablist. Its follow up, Ether Teeth, shattered those notions. An abstract collage of gleefully sloppy sounds, it showed Broder to be as interested in songcraft and even singing as he was in scratching records. This move continued over subsequent EPs and the full-length Tenth Avenue Freakout. By the time 2007's Ditherer arrived, Fog was officially a trio, and Broder's compositions had as much in common with a band like Pavement's as they did with his erstwhile Ninja Tune brethren. And with stated influences as disparate as composer Charles Ives and metal experimentalists Xasthur, Broder's journey into the great musical beyond seems like it could be just getting started.

Katy Davidson, the only constant member of Dear Nora, started writing songs and singing in 1996 and formed Dear Nora three years later with bassist Ryan Wise and drummer Marianna Ritchey, all of whom were studying at Portland's Lewis & Clark College. They issued a pair of self-released cassettes before releasing a self-titled seven-inch on Portland's Magic Marker Records and an EP, Dreaming Out Loud, which was written and recorded in a single day. In 2001, Dear Nora's debut LP, We'll Have a Time, was issued on Magic Marker and licensed for release in Japan. An EP, The New Year followed a year later. 2004's Mountain Rock had many of the lovely, simple elements of Davidson's early work, but mixed in so-called elements of slow core, folk and shoegazer music. In 2006 There Is No Home appeared, which Davidson announced would be the band's last.

This four-track aficionado whips up songs as quickly as instant Jell-O, and the results can be just as delectable. In 2006, this Anacortes, Washington native released his first proper album Beneath Waves on the K Records label. However, for those who can't get enough of his improvisational home recording, he releases a CD a month via his "Kelp Monthly" subscription service -- all complete with handmade packaging and inserts. He also tours and records with a number of bands from the Pacific Northwest, including Mirah, Wolf Colonel, the Microphones, Little Wings and Laura Veirs.
