Arriving in 1991 amidst a smattering of English bands with monosyllabic names and breathy-voiced, indie/dance crossover potential, Verve's "All in the Mind" was starry-eyed rock 'n' roll for the rave and shoegazing generation. Amidst a haze of heavenly metaphors, headphone-splitting singles and a debut record smothered in half-lidded narcosis, Verve's strong points were immediately apparent: hours spent practicing in smoky warehouses had outfitted the band with a rhythm section that rumbled along like a medicated steam engine, making for live performances that were nothing short of blistering. Although born-to-be-a-frontman Richard Ashcroft was prone to taking the stage in full shamanic poses, there was no doubting the sincerity of this band. If a barefoot Ashcroft cried out, "I wanna know and I wanna feel" with arms outstretched while fronting a sea of slow, muted thunderclaps topped by Nick McCabe's lilting guitar cries, you wanted to know and feel as well. Never achieving much success until the release of Urban Hymns (1997), newly christened the Verve consistently toured the U.S to a small yet furiously loyal cult audience, performing shows that were huge, rock-from-outer-space events packed into tiny clubs. Tensions grew along with their success, culminating in the official split of the band early in 1999. Ashcroft launched a solo career and other members worked in various projects including guitarist Simon Tong's contributions with the Good, the Bad & the Queen. In June 2007, however, the band announced a reunion tour, which would lead to their first album in over a decade, 2008's Forth.

Sigur Ros may not realize they're the kings of post-Shoegazer (sorry, Mogwai), but perhaps that's a good thing. This Icelandic outfit creates interplanetary soundscapes that make Slowdive sound like Motorhead. Moaning guitars weep and howl over textured, ether-soaked guitar effects as an androgynous singer coos and croons wistful melodies of pure soul. Sigur Ros create the kind of transcendental music for those who appreciate aural escapism and white noise. Their songs somehow sound and feel like coming down softly upon endless Arctic sheets -- you clear off some snow from the surface to discover blue lights shining from beneath the ice. If ghosts get to listen to music, don't think for a second that they subscribe to the gloomy Goth ethic. It would make sense if Sigur Ros topped the music charts for afterlife listeners.

Mogwai's fleshed-out spacey guitar arrangements are a blissful drone that always stops short of meandering. Their creative, multilayered guitar noodling often takes precedence over Stuart Braithwaite's sparse vocals. Formed in 1996, the band proceeded to release a number of largely ignored independent singles, until the release of "Angels vs. Aliens," which became a U.K. Indie Top-10 single. The band began to amass critical acclaim with the release of Mogwai Young Team in 1997 and solidified their place in the alt rock world with the hugely successful Kicking A Dead Pig in 1998.

Graduates from the University of Audio Alchemy, the Secret Machines create music that's just as mechanical as it's organic. Intricately arranged symphonies of distorted analog sounds soar upward alongside digital accoutrements before being blown apart by what sounds like fireworks. The Machines channel a myriad of influences, blending Pink Floyd's early space rock romanticism with Neu's static-happy electro drones, and Spiritualized's post-shoegazer tremolos with My Bloody Valentine's warbling walls of guitar effects. Singer Ben Curtis has a Flaming-Lips-by-way-of-Neil-Young style on some songs but seems most at home when accompanied by two-part vocal harmonies. Their music flirts heavily with various psychedelic styles, but you don't need to take mind-bending drugs to enjoy it.

When you have an ego as large as Richard Ashcroft's, it's impossible not to put out solo material. Not that his ego is a bad thing, mind you. The ex-frontman for Wigan, England's the Verve has always been somewhat of a visionary. He once told a journalist that when he was eleven years old and the other kids were playing with action figures, he was more concerned with contemplating life and death. Ashcroft's lyrics dive headfirst into the spiritual and the subconscious -- it is refreshing that he is not afraid to expose the raw nerves of unconditional love and relationships between people. This is what has always put him light years ahead of Noel Gallagher, Ian Brown, Damon Albarn or any of his so-called contemporaries. With the release of his first solo album Alone With Everybody, Ashcroft unleashes musical spirituality by injecting something usually not present in most commercial music: human soul and musical numinousness. With sweeping, swirling love songs such as "You On My Mind In My Sleep," Ashcroft forgoes the ego and exposes his heart in the company of otherworldly guitar drones, string accompaniment and weeping pedal steel notes. It is here the listener realizes that this man's forte is the love song. Even on the more up-tempo (and Pro Tools-laden) hits such as "Come On People (We're Making It Now)" and "I Get My Beat," we find Ashcroft confident and triumphant in his amorous temper. His songs reveal a young man who is completely enamored with the shortness of life and the time we have to live it.

Mention the name Syd Barrett and the word "crazy" often follows. It's a darn shame, considering myth shrouds most of his life. Here is what we do know: Barrett's influence on pop music is beyond significant. Mod, psychedelia, prog rock, glam, new wave, shoegaze, Brit pop, indie rock -- they've all been touched by his genius. As the original leader and primary songwriter of Pink Floyd, Barrett was a central component to the London underground of the 1960s. On the band's first four singles, as well as its debut LP The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, he forged a mix of distortion-soaked mod and free improv that positioned the band as the Velvet Underground of the U.K., only far more whimsical. In 1968, Barrett and the band parted ways; apparently, the pressures of fame, as well as too much LSD, had made him a fairly unpredictable fellow. That said, Barrett released two now-classic albums, The Madcap Laughs and Barrett, on which he further explored his love for avant-pop. Several false starts aside, our hero retreated from the music industry in the mid '70s. Living in his mother's basement in Cambridge for a good chunk of his post-Floyd years, Barrett died of pancreatic cancer in 2006.

Hazy, ethereal music from guitarists Brian McBride and Adam Wiltzie. The duo create a variety of pulsating swells and haunting drones, sonically manipulating volume surges, tape loops and samples. Their first album Music for Nitrous Oxide was aptly named: organically developed songs with subtle rhythms gently massage the unfeeling inner parts of your brain. More recently they have collaborated with groups like Labradford on remixes, and created boundary-breaking multimedia work with painter Jon McCafferty. You don't have to listen closely to each part of each song to appreciate Stars of the Lid; listening is a total experience, with complete compositions coursing through shifting minimalist experiments.

Philadelphia-bred noise terrorists indulge in heavy, sprawling, head-nodding drones. Chords bend and wrap around your head like hallucinogenic blindfolds, while vocals exist only as a guide to the melody, often sounding backwards. But far from being Space Rock without the usual accompanying ethereality, Bardo Pond rely heavily upon improvised, distorted drones and blues chords. Hypnotically rolling drums are the only constant as guitars search out different sounds. Isobel Sollenberger’s flute pipes in and out, acting as a grounding instrument while reminding you about what planet on which you live. The end result is an experiment in massive guitar texture.

Fuxa (pronounced like the color fuchsia) is made up of former members of equally adventurous Asha Vida and Windy and Carl. Armed with a four-track and a good number of ancient synthesizers, Fuxa have embodied the DIY ethic while managing to create a throwback world filled with humming organs and fluttering, hazy bass while incorporating guitar sounds that turn your insides into velvet. They have also used minimal electronics and funky conga drumming. The band also releases its records on its own Mind Expansion label from its home studio. Fuxa's dedication to appearances is apparent in a cornucopia of limited edition releases, colored vinyl, and hand-cut record sleeves that have made them into (relatively) overnight cult figures. It doesn't hurt that the music's top-notch, either.

Bowery Electric emerged on the Kranky label in the mid-1990s. Alongside bands like Jessamine and Labradford, Bowery Electric's early sound gelled with Kranky's droning aesthetic. Working in the confines of organic music, the band laid down a heavy drum beat, topped by waves of feedback and monotone, blissed-out vocals. Not until the release of Beat in 1996 did the band begin to develop fully. Utilizing a love of electronic music and hip-hop beats, the band crafted their most elaborate complex music. Swirling, hypnotic beats under an equally dizzying array of samples, sequences and the most beautiful guitar noise heard since Kevin Shields last plugged in his Fender Jazzmaster. A series of remix EPs and one remix LP followed which further established the band's increasing taste for experimentation. The band released a stunning single entitled "Blow Up" in '97 which managed to combine dreamy, Satie-inspired piano with low-key Drum 'N' Bass. The band intend to release their fourth full length later this year entitled Lushlife which, if the title track and the newer "Freedom Fighter" single are any indication, should continue the band's head-spinning trajectory.

Silver Apples were a duo based in New York who debuted a world of electronic drones, blips and possible alien origins to an uninterested public in '68. The band was characterized by their analog heavy sound (courtesy of Simeon Coxe's homemade, self-named synthesizer) which was made even heavier by the inclusion of more oscillating rhythms than you could shake a Thai stick at. Consisting of Danny Taylor and Coxe, the duo has become one of the many artists whose music fell on deaf ears at the time, only to become enormously influential to an ever-increasing group of sonic experimentalists. Luckily, the band has been able to reap the benefits of this by recording new material and becoming the subject of tribute records as well as reissues.

Since forming in the mid-'90s, Farflung have scratched out a place in the psychedelic community with a reverential attention to the details Can invented and the minds that Hawkwind obliterated. The similarities are often so evident it can actually sound as if Farflung are in fact a collaboration between Hawkwind and Can. That is not necessarily a bad thing as their music -- steeped in sleepy psychedelia as it is -- avoids the pitfalls of much slow-mo space rock whenever the L.A.-based six-piece (three guitars) steps on the gas, which is early and often. Passages of thrumming stoner metal veer off into frequent interstellar freakouts. Yet even at their most far-outiest, the band never loses a playfulness and warmth (think of a physical embodiment of the song "Moon Shake" by Can) that set them apart from the vast majority of humorless psyche bands. The group has released six albums in the years following the 1995 appearance of their debut, 25,000 Feet Per Second, the most recent being Wound in Eternity, which came out in May 2008.

Hood do the frantically paced Indie pop thing very well. But they also show they can do the hushed-vocals-with-loads-of-delay-alongside-an-ambient-leaning-bed-of-music thing to telling effect as well. The band call this obtuse approach "mystery pop."
Guitarist Ethan Miller and bass player Ben Flashman formed Comets on Fire in Santa Cruz, Calif., in 1999. They enlisted drummer Utrillo Belcher and electronics dude Noel von Harmonson soon after. With Miller's wholly over-the-top style of guitar playing (one-half Randy Holden of Blue Cheer, one-half Munehiro Narita of High Rise and the rest from another planet), von Harmonson's squalling use of an Echoplex and the rhythm section anchored by Flashman and Belcher's Keith Moon-esque spazz-drumming, the band became a fast favorite in the underground scene for their ear-splittingly loud and powerful live performances. Alternative Tentacles and Ba Da Bing! both put out very good records for the band, but it wasn't until longtime collaborator Ben Chasney (Six Organs of Admittance ) joined on "second outta hand guitar" and Sub Pop signed them, that they started to receive national recognition as one of the very forerunners of heavy music in the '00s. Their debut for Sub Pop, Blue Cathedral, garnered tons of critical praise, showing up on many indie lists as one of the Top-10 records of 2004. In 2006, they released Avatar, which found the band successfully growing beyond their "turn it up to 11" tendencies and messing around with melodic use of keyboards, slower tempos and more, actually intelligible, singing from Miller.

Few artists have ever matched the intensity of the Boredoms. In a frenzy on the level of bands like Naked City and Mr. Bungle (both of whom took strong inspiration from the Boredoms), their epileptic rhythms, firebombing instrumentation and volatile vocal maneuvers combine uncontrolled, frenetic ecstasy and technical mastery. By dropping toy instrument breaks between Grindcore blasts and bastardized Techno, they create their own language out of the detritus of musical forms and take the listener through a Surrealist misadventure. Their sound, as well as their career, is fraught with unpredictability. Few bands have reinvented themselves as consistently as the Boredoms after they took Hardcore music to its self-destructive limit. Always musical saboteurs, they now perform extreme experiments in Psychedelia, Krautrock and Musique Concrete, creating long, sustained passages of mutating, sublime guitar noise, tribal rhythms and tape manipulation.

Black Tambourine's brand of dark, 1960s-touched twee pop sprouted in 1990s Washington, D.C., when most bands there were obsessed with angst-ridden DIY post-punk. What's most remarkable about the band's two-year career is not that they were going against the grain, but that their sound came so far ahead of others who would dominate college radio with squalling feedback and pop roots a decade later. When it was all but unheard of, they combined '60s pop with elements of shoegazer, draping every track in fuzzed-out distortion and echoing feedback while retaining a dedication to classic pop forms that would make Phil Spector proud. Like the bashful indie vocalists that would follow a decade later, singer Pam Berry's winsome, reverb-wet melodies gets covered by the noisy flourishes, but the overall effect is dreamy, heralding the twilight architects of a sound that was years ahead of its time.

Huge washes of feedback-drenched guitars envelop the listener completely, deconstructing and reinventing texture and melody into a deeply personal, utterly overwhelming hum of blissful movement. Primarily the vehicle of guitarist David Pearce (partner Rachel Brook left in 1997 to pursue her solo project Movietone), Flying Saucer Attack has taken the wall-o-guitars framework built by My Bloody Valentine and Spacemen 3 and exploded its possibilities. Since 1991, Pearce has explored his instrument to the fullest, creating rich sounds and psychedelic atmospheres that would make most guitar geeks wet their pants. Successful collaborations with fellow experimentalists Tele:Funken, Bruce Russell and Roy Montgomery have further expanded FSA's sonic range, bringing sampling and other techniques into the fold.

Emerging from the garage for a few years in the '80s bleary-eyed and holding guitars set on reverb, Loop's mad, droning rock stretched infinitely out into space. Buzzing waves emit from guitars that echo outward in hypnotic ripples, splashing around in feedback and leaving a grainy trail of throbbing, dissonant noise. Their all-encompassing cosmic rock seems to swallow almost everything it encounters, including founding member Robert Hampson's vocals, which are less a distinct addition to the music than the noisy mortar that acts to solidify their ever-expanding wall of sound.

The deconstructed jams of Subarachnoid Space construct abstract labyrinths of sound. Rather than stone, the walls of these audio mazes are made of sinuous wah-wah guitars, shimmering cymbals and jazz-inspired free jams. The band owes an obvious debt to the aggressively experimental and improvisational spirit of '60s Psychedelic Rock and '70s Krautrock. (A Listen.com employee is a member of this band.)

Young Galaxy's story isn't exactly the stuff of constellation myths, but it
is romantic in more than one sense of the word. First, the story of the
band, which consists of Catherine McCandless and her boyfriend, Stephen
Ramsay, is the story of a couple who met, fell in love and formed a band
together to jointly pursue their musical dreams. Second, the story takes
place in a couple of cities that are positively overrun with moony artistic
types. McCandless and Ramsay met in Vancouver, where years ago they began
working on material that would become Young Galaxy's. But before their own
project came to be, the couple moved to Montreal, where Ramsay took what
ended up being quite a long gig as a touring guitarist for another
cosmically named outfit, Stars. After he left amicably to focus on his work
with McCandless, Young Galaxy was snapped up by Arts & Crafts, a Canadian
label that's home to a stable of more dreamers, such as Broken Social Scene
and Feist. The band released an EP, formed a live band and took off on tour
with label-mates The Dears. In 2007, Arts & Crafts released Young Galaxy's
eponymous full-length debut.

Multi-instrumentalist Nik Turner was one of the founding members of Hawkwind and accounted for much of the band's experimental edge; without him, they may have sounded more "Acid" Rock than "Space." When Hawkwind started unraveling at the seams, Turner set out on his own, saving face and retaining his hot-commodity status.
Indian Jewelry are classic Lone Star State freaks. Following in the tradition of fellow Texans Rusted Shut, the Butthole Surfers and the Red Krayola, the Houston-bred trio melts garage punk, electronic weirdness, noise rock and psychedelia into a fuzzy goop pulsating with sinister intent. Their live shows -- maniacally flickering strobes coupled with gut-rupturing beats and piercing wails -- are particularly intense. At the same time Indian Jewelry possesses a love for post-industrial dance grooves and media-savvy performance art (more Psychic TV than Throbbing Gristle) more common to underground rock bands from the coasts. Fronted by the gorgeous Erika Thrasher, the group resembles those indie rock models in American Apparel advertisements. Maybe that's why they eventually relocated to Los Angeles, where the urban tendencies in the group's sound have only been further accentuated. On Free Gold!, released in 2008 on the We Are Free label, Indian Jewelry tempered its usual sonic assault with shades of shoegaze, electro-folk and exotic pop. You could call the album "fashion noise." Of course, it will still sound like plain old noise to 95% of the world's population.

Remnants of Eric's Trip get together to craft hallucinogenic sound collages of grungy guitars and bong-blasted ruminations. Imagine crossing the crude succinctness of early Sebadoh with the feedback fetishism of the Melvins. This may be the wildest journey a person can make without leaving the living room couch.

Virginia's Pelt have been crafting dark washes of cavernous drone and searing feedback since 1993. Rarely does ambient guitar noise accomplish its goals without seeming trite and removed due to cowardly over-reliance on effects. While Pelt certainly is not free of effects, the group consistently manages to create rich moods, textures, and colors in a way that is organic, inspired, disturbing and vital.

With a series of releases longer than the arm of a very long-armed man, the Asuza Plane began recording in 1995 under the banner statement that they would cease recording after their 10th official release. That time has yet to come as they continue to focus on their dueling guitar drones and enormous drum sounds. Most of their releases are deemed "unofficial" since they concentrate on releasing split singles and contributing to compilations. Working within a genre that puts a lot of focus on "spaciness," the music of Azusa Plane can be seen as more challenging than the norm. Seemingly disparate elements are placed together creating, at times, a luscious and discordant acoustic mixture alongside abrasive sonic assaults.

There seems to be no shortage of dreamy instrumentalists these days and Michigan's Calliope fall successfully into that heap of vibraphones and locked rhythms. Calliope also manage to incorporate a deeper funk amidst their detailed orchestrations by involving heavy low-end basslines and turntables. Not that the band limit themselves to non-vocal music -- they cover all musical aspects while projecting a heavily dynamic sound into outer space. A long way from their roots in minor chord drones and feedback blasts, Calliope continue to expand their once-limited frontiers.

Hailing from Christchurch, New Zealand, guitarist Roy Montgomery has become something of a legend in experimental pop and avant-garde circles. Past projects include seminal Post-Punk band the Pin Group (their first single was the first release on the now acclaimed Flying Nun label), Dadamah and Dissolve, as well as collaborations with Flying Saucer Attack and Bardo Pond. Like New Zealand brethren Michael Morley and Dean Roberts, his guitar style is instantly recognizable. While rich, colorful and melodic, Montgomery's chiming sound hides a subtle darkness -- a sort of tortured longing numbed by a polite smile and a soothing drone. Stunning work that manages to be simultaneously sprawling and intimate.

Philadelphia's Asteroid #4 make no attempt to hide their swirling, psychedelic tendencies: rainbow colored album covers tint their four somber-looking faces; the song title "Underbelly of a Mushroom"; the occasional use of sitar and tablas. Uncommonly original, their music spirals and hypnotizes as tape manipulations induce glazed eyes and effects often border just north of monotony. Asteroid #4 are consistently inventive enough in composition to keep their reverb and chord drones from crashing head-on into a 1960s-obsessed roadblock.

With a blistering wall of guitars and pounding rhythms, Lupine Howl set the stage for their freak-out-meets-rave-up sound. Drawing heavily on British basement R&B, these guys bear a passing resemblance to say, Traffic or the Yardbirds. Yes, that. But on acid.
