Maybe one reason TV on the Radio gets listed among the best American bands of their generation is because their free-ranging sound deftly throws together a multitude of American musical traditions all at once. The avant-garde indie rock band started as a duo in 2001 when vocalist Tunde Adebimpe met multi-instrumentalist and producer David Andrew Sitek by coincidence. Though they were both recording material for individual projects, they joined efforts and brought in Sitek's brother Jason on drums for sessions that resulted in a self-titled debut released on Brooklyn micro indie Milk. On the strength of this recording, the band signed with Touch and Go, signed up guitarist/vocalist Kyp Malone and released the Young Liars EP in 2003, which was met by unanimous critical praise. They toured throughout 2004 supporting their debut full length, Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes, which was similarly extolled. With dates opening for the Pixies and a fan in David Bowie, TV on the Radio's popularity outgrew their indie label, and in the summer of '06 they issued Return to Cookie Mountain on Interscope (featuring back up vocals from Bowie), which nabbed top spots on a number of year-end lists for 2006. They followed up with an equally solid album in 2008, Dear Science.

The most exciting band of the 1980s, period. Sonic Youth had no equivalent then, and they still don't -- no one on the underground can rival them for daring, brilliance and range. Their willingness to experiment and evolve brought them perilously near the mainstream in the early '90s, but recent efforts have once again delivered them into the covetous arms of art-rock's intelligentsia. Starting off on the heels of New York's no wave movement, Sonic Youth's pre-SST material marked a period of maturation defined by self-conscious DIY amateurism and the complete demolition of rock guitar convention. The approach broke ground, but kept a pretty low ceiling on what the band could achieve. The arrival of EVOL in 1986 signaled the end of Sonic Youth's anarchic primitivism and the dawning of their golden age. They were gradually transforming bouts of alternate tuning overkill into tightly crafted song. Daydream Nation (1988) remains their pinnacle achievement, a thematically coherent pastiche of Gen-X cynicism, sonic tube disasters and surreal guitar passages that chime like harps in a hailstorm. The work of Sonic Youth is all the more remarkable for being almost entirely self-produced and truly collaborative in origin. Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon and Lee Ranaldo all lend a hand in writing and singing, which sometimes produces the jarring effect of listening to three different bands on the same album.

The wild stage antics of Mindless Self Indulgence front man "Urine" caught the attention of Insane Clown Posse and earned the band the opening slot on their 1999-2000 tour. In the studio, MSI race through minute-or-so, industrially mutated hip-hop/metal tunes. Their off-center cover of Method Man's "Bring the Pain" went off like a pipe bomb in the face of new metal, leaving it pocked with shards of burning irony.

Since their inception in 1993, Blonde Redhead have released some of the most sonically interesting guitar-driven Indie Rock on the circuit. Originally incorporating the more melodic elements of Sonic Youth's dual guitar attack, the group created songs rich in dissonant texture and driving, urgent rhythms. The next inception of the group saw Unwound's Vern Rumsey taking over bass duties, imparting his driving, almost entrancing whirl of rhythmic attack and melody onto the band's 1997 release Fake Can be Just as Good. Currently, the trio have their own set of aggressively patient rhythms and tense, sometimes creepy melodies. Guitars blink on and off to the steady sound of maracas. Arrangements subtly swell then disappear into dark, rhythmic soundscapes. The only constant has been the shared vocals of guitarists Amedeo Pace and Kazu Makino. The latter's unmistakable shrieks and haunting, chant-like moans identify and set Blonde Redhead apart from other noise enthusiasts.

John Zorn's sixty-plus (and counting) releases run the gamut from abstract improvisational game pieces (Cobra) and hyperactive, slice-and-dice Grindcore (Torture Garden) to near-minimalist Chamber Music (Redbird) and cinematic studio collages (Spillane and The Big Gundown). The New York City native's most identifiable trademarks are his bloodied, high pitch-dwelling alto saxophone playing and, as a composer, his use of rapid, jarring juxtapositions -- in mood, volume, genre, and/or instrumentation. Both qualities featured heavily in his late '80s/early '90s supergroup Naked City, a sort of rock band summation of his work since the late '70s and one of his two most popular projects. The other, his Jewish-jazz quartet Masada, is relatively traditional, featuring Klezmer and Middle Eastern-flavored melodies in an energetic, Post Bop-to-Free Jazz context. Marking a new phase of his career, Zorn has been devoting attention to his classical material, and in doing so ensuring that his listeners will consistently remain on their toes.

When Gang Gang Dance started gigging around New York City in the early 2000s, they were the last band anyone ever expected to make a great pop album. Early shows -- no doubt inspired by fellow New Yorkers No-Neck Blues Band -- were half performance art, half mystical ritual, with the band deconstructing noise rock, homemade electronica, free jazz, hip-hop and world music from Africa and Asia. Drummer Tim DeWitt and keyboardist Brian DeGraw had previously played together in the Cranium, an experimental post-hardcore outfit from Washington, D.C. They were strange, but not like Gang Gang Dance. Then things started to change. Each new album documented a band striving to alchemically transform all the weird stuff mentioned up above into a novel and all-too-fantastical breed of dance pop. After two challenging albums, they succeeded with the release of God's Money in 2005. Over an undulating latticework of phantom bass drops, tribal percussion and crystal synths, vocalist Liz Bougatsos chirps, cries and coos like some kind of post-nuclear gypsy. In 2008 Gang Gang Dance upped the ante with the wonderfully psychedelic Saint Dymphna, which actually boasts a dancefloor anthem or two -- sort of.

The fuzzy, experimental rock of No Age comes from Randy Randall and Dean Spunt, a duo who were two-thirds of Wives, an LA punk outfit. After things for Wives went south, the two split off to form No Age in December of 2005. London-based promoter and micro indie Upset The Rhythm issued their six-song debut, Get Hurt, in the spring of 2007 as a part of an exclusive vinyl-only EP series. Indie tastemakers at Vice and Pitchfork gushed purple (as did major outlets like the New York Times) and the duo won a spot as one of 2007's must-see acts.

Jad Fair's spastic poetry and retardo-genius guitar playing are often found in their most accessible form on Half Japanese records. For the uninitiated, "accessible" by Jad Fair standards can be read as "just this side of coherent." Since 1977 Jad and (intermittently) brother David have been backed by a revolving lineup of underground royalty as they rip apart rock 'n' roll structures. At their best, on a song like "Charmed Life," the band sounds like Pussy Galore fronted by Buddy Holly. At their worst they still kick the hell out of anybody whose ever tried to deconstruct something as stupid as rock 'n' roll. A perpetual state of adolescent horniness marks the proceedings, with Fair inexplicably managing to sound genuinely innocent in the midst of furious, caterwauling Noise Rock. To the educated musician, Half Japanese is a nightmare; the joyful celebration of instrumental incompetence is the sort of thing that makes Berklee students purple with rage. But for folks who think "Sister Ray" is about as good as it gets, Half Japanese can be a revelation.

The sound of the Jesus Lizard will always be associated with loud, up front, borderline obnoxious, intimidating rock 'n' roll. Though often primitive in approach -- they were a trio and a drum-machine on their first release -- the Jesus Lizard has always followed the whims of its infamous front man David Yow. Starting their assault on the rock world with the 1989 Pure EP, the band found its voice with '91s Goat LP. It was on this release that the band slipped on its dirty overcoat and took their cause directly to the people. Their stripped-down, angular rock is defiantly anti-pop, and their raucous, bawdy live shows are legendary.
San Francisco sugar and spazz noise-pop band Deerhoof formed in 1994 from Nitre Pit guitarist Rob Fisk and drummer Greg Saunier. Their quirky No Wave sound was augmented in 1996 by the addition of Japanese singer and bassist Satomi Matsuzaki, who contributed a childlike timbre that makes or breaks many a potential Deerhoof fan. They released The Man, The King, The Girl in 1997 and Holdy Paws in 1999. Fisk then left to form 7 Year Rabbit Cycle, prompting Half Bird, a rarities album of material from their earliest years. John Dieterich took over guitar duties and recorded 2002's Reveille, the first of the band's albums to reach a sizable indie audience. Second guitarist Chris Cohen joined in time for 2003's Apple O. Milk Man, the band's 2004 album, was a concept album about a banana-wielding character drawn by artist Ken Kagami. An MP3-only record, Bibidi Badibi Boo, and EP Green Cosmos followed. In November 2005, Runners Four was released.

Active since coming together in 1992, Boris remain unknown in Japan, but internationally they have long been recognized as leaders in experimental metal. Over the course of a 16-album and countless 7-inch career, the trio is largely associated with drone and doom but has also messed with straight rock, stoner, noise and ambient genres. Boris are legendary for unrelentingly slow, feedback-drenched dirges that stretch well over the 60-minute mark. They also construct equally long, highly orchestrated epics as well as shorter (for them) Melvins-influenced slow-jams. Their first album, Absolutego, came out in 1996, and as most of their material was not available in the U.S. until Southern Lord started reissuing their catalog in the early 2000s, they remained a sort of holy grail of stoner metal for years. With their latest releases -- as well as frequent and varied collaborations -- finally readily available, the band has consistently lived up to the hype while paying no attention to the praise given in the mainstream press. Boris may no longer be the sought-after prize of true metal geeks, but they remain a vital and groundbreaking part of the extreme metal scene.

No band fully embodied the word "cacophony" more than the Birthday Party. Much like the Harold Pinter play from which they took their name, their music was dark, comical and grotesque. The Australian-born band blew apart London in the early '80s with their discordant, difficult blend of punk rock and theatrics. Though existing only from the years 1980 to 1983, their live sonic assaults were extremely influential, as was Nick Cave's singing, which was more akin to the shrieks of a demented nineteenth century inmate on his way to the asylum. The banging percussion of "Sometimes Pleasureheads Must Burn" and the stop/start confrontational screams of "Release the Bats" or "Big Jesus Trash Can" were actually capable of instigating fear. The Birthday Party opened music up like a fresh wound, showing something ugly, frightening and beautiful that is still hard to look at.

Before the Jesus Lizard, before Rapeman, before singer David Yow, bassist David Wm. Sims and drummer Rey Washam left Austin, Tex., for the fertile Noise Rock ground that Steve Albini (among others) had created in Chicago -- there was Scratch Acid, a band as abrasive as a brand-new Brillo pad, as heavy as a Sherman Tank, and as scary as anything ever released on vinyl at that time. During their live shows, the band would often appear completely naked, covered in mud, and high on...well, the name makes one wonder. The band's sound was chaotic and aggressive, but they never bothered with the type of experimentation with instrumentation and genre that made fellow Austin-ites the Butthole Surfers borderline Neo Psychedelic; Scratch Acid's only goal seemed to be to frighten the bejeezus out of the listener. Songs titles like "Cannibal," "Crazy Dan" (in that lil' ditty a man sets his wife on fire), and "Damned for All Time" give you a glimpse into their collective twisted mind, but it is only by listening to their sonic assault that one can truly delve into the dementia.

Guitarist Spencer Seim and drummer Zach Hill started Hella as a duo in 2001, playing extremely intricate math-noise similar to Lightning Bolt but more melodic. Seim's style of tapping the strings gives him the ability to coax some pretty remarkable sounds out of his guitar. As a part of the early '00s post-punk avant garde explosion, Hella proudly represented the Sacramento, Calif., scene, touring the West Coast almost constantly and putting out records on the hip 5RC label. In 2005, they added a singer and a keyboardist, which greatly expanded their sound.

One of the brainiest and most prolific NYC bands of the '00s began as a duo and has done time as a four-piece. But at heart they're a power trio, given to three-CD sets and conceptual trilogies, to freak-folk and slow metal and Krautrock and dub reggae, to plunking the same note over and over for a quarter-hour or more until you realize they've been gradually shifting all along. On early albums like 1999's Enemy Hogs, they come off as a kind of stoner-rock unit, but on 2000's definitive half-hour-plus Steel Rod EP, they squeeze Link Wray barbed-wire twang and a choogling Creedence cover into weird nerd-rock that balances the sludge with science-lab keyboards after the manner of Devo or Pere Ubu. "Power Animals," on 2000's Come on Everybody Let's Rock, was about a deadlocked presidential election -- not Bush and Gore, but Tilden and Hayes in 1876. On 2002's double disc, Each One Teach One, they carried water-torture minimalism to its breaking point, and since then -- averaging more or less an album a year -- they've gotten both daintier and dronier, picking up indie fans much younger than themselves, then regularly finding ways to dumbfound them.

For those of you who thought indie rock no longer puked up scuzz rock, we present you with Pissed Jeans. These four dudes grew up in Allentown, Penn. But they might as well hail from Austin or San Francisco or any other town infamous for producing sweaty 'n' shirtless miscreants like the Happy Flowers, Halo of Flies and Butthole Surfers. Indeed, Pissed Jeans are like the ultimate Amphetamine Reptile tribute band; "I'm Sick," the lead track on their debut, Shallow, proves it. Matt Korvette howls, "I'm sick/ I'm dehydrated/ I've got diarrhea/ I can't keep my food down/ My sinuses are clogged/ I'm sick/ ARRRGGG!" But as with the mighty Jesus Lizard -- possibly the band's No. 1 influence -- Pissed Jeans' power isn't just a product of bad vibes, gross lyrics and monster riffs. These dudes jam their butts off. They're also surprisingly controlled for a band whose rhythm section rumbles like a coal-burning train barreling down a mountain. But best of all, the band writes catchy tunes that have paid dividends. Sub Pop released Pissed Jeans' second album, appropriately titled Hope for Men. Not bad for a band that wrote a song titled "Caught Licking Leather."

Noise-damaged garage-rock band the Hospitals were formed by drummer Adam Stonehouse and guitarist Rod Meyer in Portland, Ore., in 2002. Following a promisingly sloppy 2003 debut on In the Red, Meyer and Stonehouse split up, with Stonehouse relocating to San Francisco and starting over with a revolving cast of guitarists until settling on a more permanent lineup in 2007. That year he enlisted guitarist Chris Gunn and bass player Dave Wave for the recording of third album (among many split, seven-inch and limited-edition releases), Hairdryer Peace, which the band self-released in 2008. Heavily influenced by the Cheater Slicks and the Horrors, the Hospitals apply mega-doses of abrasive noise to largely blues-based songs. They then set the reverb to "kill" with Stonehouse's trippily delayed vocal complaints about his job, hipsters, rich people and having "problems" riding over the top or bubbling up from underneath the caterwaul, as the case may be.

The crowning instrument of destruction atop Providence, R.I.'s already legendary art Hardcore scene, Lightning Bolt simply rip. Though only consisting of a masked drummer and a bassist, you'd swear there was an army of musicians backing them. This is the type of band who people surround, jaws dropped and eyes darting from one player to the other in awe and envy. Crushing beats fly at you like 12-gauge blasts as towering crashes of thick, crushing noise and inhuman structure swim, charge and dart. This is more than immediate catharsis, it's a violent purging -- a purging of your notion of what Punk rock is capable of. Sure, Lightning Bolt are a rock band, and sure, you'll get your rocks off watching them. But enjoy it while you can, because death is upon you, and he comes wearing a Mexican wrestling mask. Romulans unite!

Ian Vanek and Matt Reilly were students at New York's Pratt Institute when they started playing together as Japanther in 2001. Though Vanek mans the drums and Reilly plays mostly bass, both sing and manipulate a battery of synthesizer and tape effects to achieve the band's noisy art rock fusion. Their debut, a homemade CD-R titled The Last of the Living Land Pirates, appeared in 2001, but the first widely available release, the South of Northport EP, came the following year. Between 2002 and 2007 they stayed stayed busy by releasing six LPs and several EPs, touring widely, and collaborating on a handful of acclaimed multi-media projects.

Those who only know Patton as "that guy from Faith No More" (or even via his work in the more experimental bands Mr. Bungle and Fantomas) are in for a surprise upon hearing his solo albums. Adult Themes for Voice (1996) was recorded entirely a cappella using only a four-track and a microphone (no effects), but you'd never guess it given the range of hisses, gurgles, explosions, and Industrial-grade noise blasts on hand. Pranzo Oltranzista (1997) was inspired by the Italian Futurist Cookbook, and alternates sections of eerie suspense with jarring noise outbursts; it supports the Futurist credo that "art, in fact, can be nothing but violence, cruelty, and injustice." Relatively more conventional are his contributions to the Tzadik label's Great Jewish Music tribute series, highlighted by his spastic, over-the-top version of T-Rex's "Chariot Choogle." He actually sings on that one, too.

Like Black Dice, Los Angeles' Health are a gaggle of art-school noise-rockers experimenting with electronica. The quartet came together in 2006 and has been a key component to L.A.'s underground rock scene, playing many of the same stages as No Age, Wives and Abe Vigoda. Health's self-titled debut, released on the Lovepump United imprint, explodes with squealing robo-synth and proggy tribal grooves obviously inspired by heavies like Lightning Bolt and the Boredoms. In 2007 the group teamed up with those cacophonous electro-brats in Crystal Castles and scored a U.K. indie hit with a remix of "Crimewave," one of the debut album's top jams. Health then dove deeper into electronic dance music with the release of Disco, a collection of even more remixes. But unlike Black Dice, the band hasn't totally abandoned its roots in noise-punk mayhem. Sure, a track like Pink Skulls' remix of "Heaven" is pure 3 a.m. ecstasy. But when compared to most mainstream club jams, its raw beats and searing distorto-drone would freak out most dance-floor vets. But who knows -- maybe Health represents the very beginnings of a lo-fi, club-noize revolution.

June of 44's edgy Indie Rock is beautiful in a distorted, understated way. The songs are chillingly bleak, with guitars that spasmodically emit clangorous chords beneath sighed vocals and pained wails. Even when they erupt into pure noise and angry screams, there is a sinuous flow that softens the hard edges; a pervasive calm in chaos.

Guitarist Ethan Miller and bass player Ben Flashman formed Comets on Fire in Santa Cruz, Calif., in 1999. They enlisted drummer Utrillo Belcher and electronics dude Noel von Harmonson soon after. With Miller's wholly over-the-top style of guitar playing (one-half Randy Holden of Blue Cheer, one-half Munehiro Narita of High Rise and the rest from another planet), von Harmonson's squalling use of an Echoplex and the rhythm section anchored by Flashman and Belcher's Keith Moon-esque spazz-drumming, the band became a fast favorite in the underground scene for their ear-splittingly loud and powerful live performances. Alternative Tentacles and Ba Da Bing! both put out very good records for the band, but it wasn't until longtime collaborator Ben Chasney (Six Organs of Admittance ) joined on "second outta hand guitar" and Sub Pop signed them, that they started to receive national recognition as one of the very forerunners of heavy music in the '00s. Their debut for Sub Pop, Blue Cathedral, garnered tons of critical praise, showing up on many indie lists as one of the Top-10 records of 2004. In 2006, they released Avatar, which found the band successfully growing beyond their "turn it up to 11" tendencies and messing around with melodic use of keyboards, slower tempos and more, actually intelligible, singing from Miller.

Not to be confused with the glammed-up British garage rockers that go by the same name, these the Horrors were a guitar-and-drum (no bass) rockabilly/garage-noise trio from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, who were active in the early '00s. Exhibiting stronger rockabilly leanings than any of their garage scene peers (or predecessors for that matter, except for the Bassholes), the Horrors puked up two very good albums on In the Red, made a name for themselves as a completely outta hand live act and then promptly disappeared. The Horrors, seemingly recorded in a tin shack either set on train tracks or set on fire, appeared in 2000 and painfully set the bar for oversaturated rock 'n' roll, highlighted by such party-ruining classics as "Every Inch of My Love," "Hurt That Bird" and "I Don't Need a Woman, I Need a Nurse." The marginally better-recorded Vent appeared in 2003 -- more topped-out trashing -- after which the band unfortunately fell silent.

In the early, explosive, experimental days of Punk, San Francisco gave birth to some of the more eclectic bands in the genre. Along with the Screamers (known by their logo but not their music), Flipper made music to suit their own idiosyncratic cravings. The result induced a love-'em-or-loathe-'em attitude in listeners. Slow and creepy at a time when fast and short was the rule, Flipper took the long, winding route -- songs often stretched past (then unheard of) five minutes. The heavy, sloppy, plodding bass guitar melted into deeply tuned guitars. Maniacal yet hauntingly poignant lyrics, sung with the perfection of a mental hospital's star soloist, glazed the whole swampy mess, lending urgency to the otherwise creepy-crawly noise crunch. Flipper reveled in poking you where it hurt most, and in their songs you can see them giggling as they do it.

Guitar player from baggy-gone-Brit Pop-gone-sloppy-Lo-Fi band Blur delivers a solo experiment with some songs that seem to purposefully aim right between the eyes of a loose, American, indie rock ethic. Where in Blur he usually solos over hooky pop like a scattered six-string demon, Coxon's solo material seems dumbed-down into the kind of premeditated, monotonous guitar strumming, predictable distortion layers on the choruses, and indecisively pensive lyrics that trust-fund kids with beat-up Chuck Taylors and expendable record collections are sure to enjoy -- that is, until Coxon signs to a major label.

Uncompromisingly punk rock in his ideals and relentlessly avant-garde in his execution of those principles, Thurston Moore occupies a unique position in rock 'n' roll history. After a brief stint as part of Glenn Branca's guitar army, he founded legendary art punk outfit Sonic Youth in 1981 with fellow no wavers Lee Ranaldo and Kim Gordon. The band went on to become one of the most important combos of the past two decades, fusing intelligent songwriting with bold experimentalism. Beyond his contributions with that band, Moore has also made a name for himself as a first-rate improviser. Inspired by the work of Rudolf Grey, Donald Miller, Keith Rowe and others, Moore made his first foray into the genre with Barefoot in the Head, a one-off project with Jim Sauter and Don Dietrich of Borbetomagus. Since then he's worked extensively with improvisers Tom Surgal, Nels Cline and Loren Mazzacane to name a few, crafting dynamic, sprawling and occasionally ear-shattering sounds with a subtle hand. Though his improvising is certainly his primary focus outside of Sonic Youth, he released a successful record of well-crafted Indie Rock entitled Psychic Hearts in 1995.

Husband and wife Ben Orcutt and Adris Hoyos formed Harry Pussy in Miami in the early 1990s, taking free jazz, the NYC no wave and British industrial scenes into unknown and unheard of territories of extremity. With various second guitarists, an occasional accordionist and Orcutt playing guitar while Hoyos screamed and intermittently hit drums, Harry Pussy made a caterwauling no-music that has few, if any, equals. On top of the high level of confrontation in their live shows, Harry Pussy further blew minds with the fact that the seemingly random screaming and guitar flailings were anything but improvised. Between 1992 and 1997, the band released eight albums and approximately a dozen seven-inches, for various respected underground labels, Siltbreeze, Black Jack and Esync among them.

Emo essentially splits into two styles: the melodic variety associated with Sunny Day Real Estate and Jawbox and "Emocore" as represented by Boy Sets Fire, Mineral, etc. Drive Like Jehu are widely acknowledged as a seminal influence on the latter half. Their signature exasperated, heart-felt singing and buzzsaw guitar work helped define a style which continues to grow in popularity. Emocore enthusiasts looking to get back to their angst-rock roots need look no further than Drive Like Jehu. And completists will love the fact that their discography consists of only a brace of longplayers...so get them both and whenever you're in need of a quick fix of audio immolation, you'll be set for life.

Wolf Eyes have been evolving since the late 1990s, when Michigander Nate Young made strange noises come out of the electronic gadgets he had come across and perverted for his own uses. Aaron Dilloway (of seminal '90s noise bands Couch, Galen and the supremely retarded Pterodactyls) joined up soon after, bringing along demented guitar flailings, a microphone he actually chews on, and more eccentric gadgets. Next the pair started adding extremely minimal beats to the caterwaul. In 2001, denim-clad Judas Priest fan John Olson came on board, adding a third level of sonic unholiness to the mix. The group gradually moved from formless noise rants into a sort of ultra heavy disco-metal psychedelia, gaining a Deadhead-like following in the process and basically leading the charge for the noise rock insurgence of the early 2000s alongside such bands as N.Y.C.'s Black Dice and Providence, RI's Lightning Bolt, among others. Most recently, the group has moved beyond allowing for beats -- or any type of discernible rhythm -- and gone directly into such ideas as changing the direction of one's blood or controlling the weather through pure volume, electronically manipulated noise, and Young's super menacing vocal rasp.
