Active since coming together in 1992, Boris remain unknown in Japan, but internationally they have long been recognized as leaders in experimental metal. Over the course of a 16-album and countless 7-inch career, the trio is largely associated with drone and doom but has also messed with straight rock, stoner, noise and ambient genres. Boris are legendary for unrelentingly slow, feedback-drenched dirges that stretch well over the 60-minute mark. They also construct equally long, highly orchestrated epics as well as shorter (for them) Melvins-influenced slow-jams. Their first album, Absolutego, came out in 1996, and as most of their material was not available in the U.S. until Southern Lord started reissuing their catalog in the early 2000s, they remained a sort of holy grail of stoner metal for years. With their latest releases -- as well as frequent and varied collaborations -- finally readily available, the band has consistently lived up to the hype while paying no attention to the praise given in the mainstream press. Boris may no longer be the sought-after prize of true metal geeks, but they remain a vital and groundbreaking part of the extreme metal scene.

Few artists have ever matched the intensity of the Boredoms. In a frenzy on the level of bands like Naked City and Mr. Bungle (both of whom took strong inspiration from the Boredoms), their epileptic rhythms, firebombing instrumentation and volatile vocal maneuvers combine uncontrolled, frenetic ecstasy and technical mastery. By dropping toy instrument breaks between Grindcore blasts and bastardized Techno, they create their own language out of the detritus of musical forms and take the listener through a Surrealist misadventure. Their sound, as well as their career, is fraught with unpredictability. Few bands have reinvented themselves as consistently as the Boredoms after they took Hardcore music to its self-destructive limit. Always musical saboteurs, they now perform extreme experiments in Psychedelia, Krautrock and Musique Concrete, creating long, sustained passages of mutating, sublime guitar noise, tribal rhythms and tape manipulation.

Japanese noise rockers Melt-Banana will blow your mind. Combining Punk's furious intensity with boggling virtuosity and bold experimentalism, the band conjures a sound that can only be described as inhuman. Guitarist Agata's feet navigate a maze of effects pedals with the skill and finesse of a tap dancer, crafting unholy, inner ear-tickling noises and triggering microscopic samples to color his feverish slide guitar heroics. Meanwhile, vocalist Yasuko O. belts out squeaky, percussive shrieks that, while occasionally cute (the band's renditions of "White Christmas" and "Surfin' U.S.A." are particularly entertaining), are most often just startling. And their songs are fast. Insanely fast. They rarely extend over the two minute mark, and regularly clock in at under a minute. And thank goodness -- if their songs were any longer, the uninitiated would surely pass out from over-stimulation. If you suffer from any sort of heart condition, approach with caution.

Acid Mothers Temple is a Japanese psychedelic collective led by multi-instrumentalist and psychedelic warlord guitarist Kawabata Makoto. Taking ideas formed in Kawabata's earlier bands, (Mainliner, Musica Transonic) and expanding on them in unpredictable ways, these bearded space hippies play journey-taking psyche rock, more purely psychedelic and jam-oriented than the Motorhead-meets-Blue Cheer crush of the aforementioned bands. The band is astonishing live, but with nearly 100 releases since 1995, their overstuffed catalogue can be a bit confounding.

Ruins is a Japanese duo led by percussionist and vocalist Tatsuya Yoshida. Paired with only an accompanying bass player and vocalist, Ruins unlock infinite possibilities with two instruments and two voices. Essentially a Prog band using (minimal) rock instrumentation, they perform music with incomprehensible complexity. Emulating his hero Christian Vander, leader of the obscure French prog band Magma, Yoshida writes intricate orchestrations of instruments and voices that move as a solid formation, switching modes and time signatures in perfect unison, vaulting and dropping as a single unit. They execute these tight twists and turns with incredible dexterity and aggressive abandon. Ruins are unlike anything else on earth.
