Often recognized more for their anti-corporate stance and rigid ethics than their vital music, it's easy to forget Fugazi are a band and not a socioeconomic public action committee or a guerilla marketing firm. Though some would argue their newfound introspective temperament signifies a major departure, the beautiful, orchestrated constructs of their more recent material may simply represent a blossoming of the seeds planted by their legendary, dissonant 13 Songs. Ian MacKaye's Hardcore bellow and Gibson SG marched alongside Guy Piccioto's (formerly of Rites of Spring) demonic rasp and flailing Rickenbacker, serving notice to Punk's intelligentsia under the watchful eye of a razor-sharp, self-editing rhythm section. Six subsequent albums have shown Fugazi's continually evolving ear for sonic craftsmanship; writing and producing works that owe an equal amount to the Beatles and Radiohead as they do Gang of Four and AC/DC. Having reached a certain state of maturation, Fugazi have, to their credit, perhaps given themselves over to musical craft rather than live famously in direct contradiction to a self-made identity.

Imitated by many, paralleled by none, Minor Threat was known for their furious passion with which they played. They blew up the D.C. scene, creating the mold for Hardcore punk around the world. MT raised the bar for punk rock with their fiery sound borne of a genuine burn: Fast and loud, but never at the expense of not playing their instruments properly. As the band grew, MT's sound slowed just a bit, allowing them to squeeze a few hooks between the crushing guitar riffs. Their message was as important, if not more so, than the music. Just as they were screaming the loudest, MT went supernova only four years after their inception. Sure, the members went on to different bands (Fugazi, Dag Nasty, Government Issue, the Meatmen), but none -- save for possibly Fugazi -- have come close to MT's impact.

Formed amid the OC hardcore scene in 1997, Throwdown is a straight-edge band that, because of the unhinged heaviness of their records (five so far) often gets tossed in with pure metal bands, although the band considers their music to be hardcore. Regardless of categorization, Throwdown has been a force in heavy music since their full-length debut in '98, for Indecision Records. Through lineup changes that have seen the band trade members several times with metalcore big shots Eighteen Visions, spots on the Ozzfest and Warped tours and in support of Swedish melody-metal band In Flames, Throwdown has remained true to their straight-edge ideals and apparent dedication to total sonic devastation.

The nomad souls who have drifted in and out of the Boston Hardcore collective Slapshot would probably outnumber some of the audiences who attended their shows. Over the years, however, these stalwart power chord pushers have forged pioneering Thrash/Punk anthems. With gale-force intensity, Slapshot's music blows off the deadfall from American Hardcore, revealing its roots in Oi! and Heavy Metal. Hectoring vocals and devastating guitar riffs give their songs the feel of a bench-emptying, stick-swinging, blood-on-the-ice hockey brawl.

Does for football what Slapshot did for hockey -- turns it into an all-encompassing metaphor for the brutal conditions of a brutal existence. Uncompromising in their Hardcore Punk ethic, Ten Yard Fight assault listeners with head-butting drums, thick-necked vocals and massive, body-checking guitar chops. Bristling with the rage and intensity of late Negative Approach, this Boston crew will take you to the wall and force you to either fight back or get trounced.

108's brittle guitars influenced a lot of other straightcore bands. They sounded like Minor Threat horsing around with big Classic Rock riffs stolen from Judas Priest or Lynyrd Skynyrd. The next crunchiest thing to a bowl of tacks for breakfast.

In-your-face Hardcore that uses the mic as a bully pulpit for Straight-Edge aggression. Misconduct's songs can be as succinct as thirty-second songs or stretch out into brutal wars of feedback-soaked attrition. Unrelenting vocal bombardment will have crowds of young, angry males waving their "wife-beaters" in surrender.
